I like how Nick says someone´s behaviour is suicidal and then goes into full heresy mode regarding the 303. Smithers, release the hounds :D

The 303 is a god, and is no way a 1 trick pony! - Top 20 Synths of all time EVER!
@TheJonHolstein
@TheJonHolstein 4 года назад
Many synths can do many things, few are 1 trick ponys in that sense, so it is perhaps more relevant to talki about their unique selling point (USP), and then the 303 can feel limited compared to other synths, as the USP of it is something that not everyone is a fan of, thus disqualifying it from a lot of peoples Top synth lists. At one time it also had its price going for it, the originals no longer has that, and the cheap clones, compete against other products in the same price category. Some love the DX7, but the USP of it was the presets, really, in the mid 80s, when nothing else came near (at least not at a pricepoing anywhere near it). Some like the keyboard, as a controller, but that seems odd, since it doesn't send full velocity. For realistic sounds, it has long been surpassed. For FM programming, ther are better options. As retro hardware it has its place, but the real USP factor of it, is gone.

I think we could do with a track with the main sample being Nick saying “gimp”. Something industrial, perhaps?

One thing that would probably be great, is if makers started making live use promo demonstration videos of maximum 5 minutes, of their products. That way, the makers would train to present their products, for physical shows (something not all are prepared for). Links or video files could be sent out in advance to people covering the shows (as a package by the organiser), as a possible way of doing some preparation. And in the case of non physical shows, that would be extremely useful, as a way for media and youtubers to get an idea of the product they will be talking about, when doing interviews and live demonstration videos. If there is a deadline for videos, that could help the makers push to finish their products, some of course will miss that, but then have a second chance to get in ready for the actual showtime, but then they can expect less coverage. Some will at least have a working prototype in time for the video deadline. There could even be a spreadsheet, so that media and youtubers can fill in what new items they intend to cover, so that some could focus on products others are unlikely to be covered by others, perhaps specifically when it comes to modular and utilities. And not being able to watch 30 minute or longer videos, does not only have to do with attention span, some people just don't have the time (or they can find the time, by taking it out of their music making time). Also a short introduction video can be the thing that peaks the interest and make a person seek out any other videos on the product/maker.

In practice that sounds good, but it never works out that way, as a presenter, if I'm shooting 6-8 of these in a day, there's little chance I'm going to be able to prepare in much detail before each one. Certainly if we are doing this in a non show scenario, then yes, thats entirely possible and likely.

@@sonicstate Of course there is a limit to how prepared one can be, but if the maker, makes short videos, it would at least be easier to have a chance to at least watch some of it, and get a chance of knowing what it is about. On the show floor, would of course in most cases be too late. One huge advantage for you, would be that many makers would be more prepared, even if you would not have the time to prepare yourself. Preparation, is a balancing act. While watching a 5 minute video, you could have the time to write down a couple of questions, and get an idea of what will be needed to record that specific product, and make notes. Potentially making the interview/factual part more consice, and either making shorter videos, or open up for a larger amount of straight demoning in the videos. But of course, there would be little chance, you would be able to go through all videos before a show, and decide on what to cover, and make notes on it (that would require a team to go through the videos). What I meant, but wasn't clear on, was that those videos packages, should cover the "new" items (either never before shown on a show, or a limited exposure on previous show in the last 12 months or less). It is of course idealistic, but if show organisers and media/youtubers would start pushing for it, it could happen to at least some extent. It would take away some surprise elements for those covering the events, but livning through the lens, tends to lessen those elements anyhow. Also, if you see this, would there ba any chance of you sending out the link to uncut shows, via newsletters, as I have experienced several times during music shows, when you upload a lot of videos, that youtube misses some live show notifications (I didn't get one for this, so it is apparently still a problem, even with the new system, and I have checked the spam folder, and each mail I got about a new upload, I have no idea if others have the same experience, but I would be strange if it was only me).
