Pitch meeting: "what scenarios can we use the rings in?" "Weddings have rings!" It was probably that simple, and maybe something focus groups thought the mums would enjoy.
I dont know if James has played the adventure games, i cant remember if he already talked about them. But one sonic game in the city that he played was... 2006
I liked the movie; but I agree with James on the fact that they should have included more of the Sonic music. If what the end credits scene shows what will appear in the next movie, they better have Crush 40 music playing especially Live and Learn!
I really liked the movie. I do wish that one scene had taken place with Sonic and Tails running through a chemical plant. That was a missed opportunity.
@@jupi_jupi Lol I’d love to even hear stuff like pumpkin hill in there. I doubt it, but SA1&2 had some great songs in there. Live and learn for sure needs to be in there.
I've been pleasantly surprised with the Sonic movies. Jim Carey was also a surprise as he's perfect as Robotnik. He's slowly morphing into the game version of Robotnik with his appearance, so I'd expect him to be rotund in the next one, even if it's just some mech suit that makes him appear round.
I enjoyed it a lot, the major gripe I have is that the whole Hawaii wedding subplot was not needed at all. I understand those characters need something to do, but it could've been handled differently. Like James Marsden's character is a cop, why not have him investigating what Agent Stone is doing or something while Sonic and Tails are off fighting Eggman and Knuckles? Other that that it was really fun.
@@nicholastosoni707 i understand that's what happened i'm just saying it could've been done in a more entertaining way. it just felt like an average rom com.
I still remember being so psyched when i got a Sega Genesis for Christmas in 1993. I got Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat and stayed in the whole day and played those games.
Sonic 2 or detective Pikachu are definitely up for the best video game movie. The one thing sonic 2 has is a super goofy bad guy, Jim Carrey as Eggman. Unfortunately, detective Pikachu had a lame bad guy.
Somehow it just feels natural to see eggman dance; and they're not just any dances! I feel like Jim Carrey does what I'd like to call: "milestone dances". The type of dance you do after something major was accomplished in your lifetime...
Glad to hear you enjoyed the movie, James! Great review! I'm a 36 year old bloke and I enjoyed every second of it. Looking forward to the next bunch of AVGN videos.
This movie was like a live action cartoon and I loved it. Also, imagine how awesome it would have been if they played Escape from the City during the snowboarding scene.
My biggest critique is the lack of Crush 40. This would've been the perfect opportunity to showcase some SA1 or SA2 tunes, or possibly even an original song from the Sonic Team music producers, but they missed it. Hopefully they won't make the same mistake with the third film! Overall, though, I enjoyed this one quite a bit. My favorite scene was when Sonic and Tails shared their brotherly moment after the dance off.
I really wanted a rock/metal soundtrack to this movie. Also would of loved to have seen some crush 40 music in it. That would of been amazing whether it was a new crush 40 piece or they used an existing one
This is a fair and well-done review of the movie. I’m glad that you also enjoyed it! I love popcorn flicks that don’t take themselves too seriously like this one.
When “It’s Tricky” started playing, it made me remember that Paramount also made the two cgi TMNT movies… especially when sonic threw the explosive into the sewer! 😂💙
I enjoyed you're review! Something I have wondered is if you have ever played Sonic Adventure 1 or 2? You mention finding it hard seeing Sonic in a human world but those games take place on earth and they are 2 of the biggest games in the series.
@@PastelWraith Look over the name of that song and realize what’s wrong with that being placed in a snow boarding scene thousands of miles away from any city
@@PastelWraith Ok but like, City escape, is when Sonic escapes from a city..... Ice Cap from Sonic 3 or the snowboard section in Adventure 1 is way more fitting
The whole wedding subplot could have been replaced with more character development for Tails, I feel like his relationship with Sonic and his backstory was kind of not focused upon more?
When Sonic Adventure 1 did this better 23 years ago than a 2022 movie with hundreds of millions of dollars for budget... I miss the Adventure games. That charm can't be replaced.
Considering James Rolfe’s AVGN is an icon of the internet, in relation to classic game, it’s fitting to see him review a movie based on an old franchise like Sonic.
I am so glad that somebody finally addressed the music in this movie. I've watched so many reviews of this film and you're the only one to address my sole gripe with the movie.
7:00 It’s more reminiscent of Sonic Adventure 2 where it does takes place in a city. Watched this twice in 4DX and enjoyed it. And I agree that there isn’t enough Sonic Music. But other than that this is the best video game based movie ever, even more than the original Mortal Kombat movie which I enjoyed as a kid.
Partially that, and partially the Sonic X cartoon. Being able to incorporate both the alien 'Mobius' type settings and Earth into the same medium was always going to be a challenge, but I like the direction they've gone with it. Keeps everything open for future movies.
@@LordMajicus He was trying to compare the games to the movies so that why I didn’t mention Sonic X which also were partially based on Sonic Adventure 1 & 2.
Your story about Sonic 2 the game was the exact same scenario for me as a kid. Always had a SNES but got a later generation Sega specifically for that game
I really enjoyed the film, though I agree with the common consensus that the wedding stuff could've been trimmed down. It's not even a bad scene, most of it is fairly amusing but these characters could've been utilised more efficiently I think.
With two Sonic movies and a Mario movie coming out in December 2022, I have a feeling that well-thought out video game movies will overtake the Superhero movie trend. So I’m looking forward to the Legend of Zelda eventually getting a movie. You know we all want that.
On the topic of its lack of game music, they could’ve easily slipped in Hard Times by the Jetzons during the snowboarding scene, which if you don’t know bears a striking resemblance to the music of Ice Cap Zone from Sonic 3 in which he rides a snowboard. A golden opportunity they sadly failed to seize.
The Sonic movies are basically live action re-tellings of Sonic X. (Only instead of the Thorndykes it’s the Wachowskis.) The character reveal in the post-credits also leads me to believe even more characters will be introduced in the third movie.
6:50 its less about the game being a fantasy world and more about all of our worlds being connected. Look at sonic adventure and adventure 2 battle which is referenced in the movie. Sonic is on earth. Think of it less about one universe to another and more about 1 planet to another. In the sonic universe technically sonic and the gang are aliens much like superman.
Great review but I'm really annoyed by people constantly complaining about Sonic and humans. Sonic Adventure is over 20 years old and people still act like it's a new thing for sonic to be with humans. I get that you never quite caught on to the modern era of gaming from N64 and onward but everybody should know about iconic sonic moments like the city escape level from SA2
Not to mention, whenever people whine "Humans don't belong in Sonic" they completely forget, ignore or straight up deny the fact that Eggman IS a human, and has been there since the very beginning!
They are also ignoring that this iteration of Sonic has chosen to make Earth his dwelling and thus he must interact with that planet’s dominant species and to cast aside humanity is to eliminate the foundation set by the precedents.
