Just to clarify: Having 50 rings when you pass a checkpoint gives you the ability to enter a Special Stage. Collecting 100 or 200 rings gives you an extra life. Get 10,000+ points at the end of a level to get a Continue. Collecting all 7 Chaos Emeralds lets you turn into Super Sonic. There IS a 10 minute time limit.

I've never seen anyone play this classic and have so little idea of how it works. They seemed to forget about Chaos Emeralds altogether until Casino Night Zone. This will not fly!

The "uncompleted" hoops at 14:34 are actually not that hard to get to, you just use the flippers on the other side then run and jump left off the conveyor belt up top

The best thing about sonic 2 two player is that tails was perfect for a younger sibling or relatives. Parents would always make the younger child play with the older child and it was really frustrating if you were him. But Sonic 2 allowed you to let them play in a way that they could never fuck up your game. They'd get to jump around and run but you still got to play completely on your own too.

All Chaos emeralds = Super Sonic!

That Chemical Plant zone music has always been by far my favourite 16-bit music, possibly even my favourite videogame music of all time.

14:36 HOLY SHIT I never knew how to get through those either! Until I looked at the level map in an editor that is. So what you have to do is go to the pinball section immediately to the right of the section with those unreachable bars. The flipper you're using on the right side at 14:40 , use that to throw yourself to the far left side of the pinball section and you will find a second pinball flipper. Use this flipper to throw yourself upwards onto a conveyor belt that should be on top of the pinball section. Use the conveyor belt to fling yourself to the left and you can get on top of the level that has the bars to the left side of it. Then its just a matter of jumping into them.

In a way, Mike is the Tails to James' Sonic.

It is so tilting that you skipped those last two rings on level 1. You were so close to an extra life!

Sonic 2 is easily the game I've played the most...I just realized that watching others play it drives me crazy. There's the skippable water part in Chemical Plant Zone, there's the easy way to beat that stage's boss fight right as it begins, and you can make the Aquatic Run Zone boss fight way easier by standing on top of the totems. That was just a couple of parts where I wanted to yell though the screen, haha. Good game.

This is how you reach all those hoops! - Run past underneath them until you reach the next part of the stage with the slot machine. Jump up on the flipper and get yourself up on top of the next wall section's edge to the right. When up there, take a running leap to the left and you'll reach a platform high above the slot machine, and from here you can jump on top of the wall section to the left and drop down through all the hoops - It's really fucking satisfying! ;)

When I would play with friends we'd use this rule: Whenever you die or beat a level you swap who plays Sonic and Tails.

It's awesome to see you playing this: Sonic 2 is my favorite Sonic game. I've been playing it since I got a Genesis. I'm also glad to see that you, who makes a living from video games, had trouble in level 2, The Chemical Plant Zone. That section in act 2 just before you get to Robotnic, where you can fall into the chemicals has always given me trouble. Great video. Keep up the good work!

Wow, they really don't know Sonic that much, or maybe it's all a play lol. Purposes of Rings: - Staying alive - 50 rings = bonus stage when hitting check points - 100 rings = Extra Life ( I believe continues if you finish with 100+ rings ) - Maintaining Super Sonic Chaos Emeralds are used to access Super Sonic when you collect all 7 of them. Although I felt that Super Sonic wasn't refined well enough till Sonic 3. He's difficult to control in Sonic 2 IMO, but fun to achieve I guess non the less. I forget if getting the Emeralds access a different ending though.

Sonic Advance games were great too!

You get all the chaos emeralds to become super sonic, super sonic is invincible, insanely fast, and flies.

This game never gets old.

I wonder why people like this game over Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles. Those games are incredible, in my top 10 favorite sega genesis games of all time.

This. Was. My. JAM! I remember as a wee little lad going to my grandparents house and playing my uncle's Genesis every chance I got. He had X-Men 1 and 2, Vectorman, Aladdin and a few other games that I can't quite remember the titles of, but this right here. THIS was what I played constantly. It was always, "I don't want to finish my spaghetti, Grandma, I wanna play Sonic!" I distinctly remember calling the Casino Night Zone the Las Vegas Zone. GOD, I miss playing this game!

You can reach the hoops at 14:33, make the following: - make a fast spin dash against the red spring and go away. - when you are falling, try to target the badnik (the shield one). - killing the badnik, Acts as a spring, sending to you to the stars!! Great video!

You guys are great gamers that beat so many hard games, to see you guys fumbling with sonic is hilarious, the sonic games were the only games I could beat as a kid, still trying to beat “altered beast” 25 years later... Actually the chaos emeralds are used for gambling in the hidden area in the casino you get to by falling though those loop rings that you can not figure out how to get to... J/k, they're for something much better but ridiculously dumb hard to do, especially for casually playing the game lol

This game was great, Sega pulled out all the stops with Sonic 2. Everything from the graphics and sound to the controls are top notch and really showed off the capabilities of the Genesis. As a kid I always preferred Nintendo. But I played on the Genesis allot more since all my friends had a Genesis. I finally got a model 3 back when they were new and have been hooked on Sega ever since. I'm still big into Nintendo, but Sega was no doubt a great company and the Genesis is a good example of what Sega was capable of. Today I feel like Sega is struggling to find an identity for themselves which is a shame.

For someone who states at the beginning of the video "This is my most favorite Sonic game and perhaps most favorite SEGA GENESIS GAME" there are many parts that it really don't seem that way....

I've recently got my hands on a "brand new" Mega Drive with Sonic 2 included and WOW, is it awesome playing it! Especially if you've never owned or played a retro console( which is my case).

- You get a continue when you finish a stage with 10000 or more bonus points. - 100 rings gets you an extra life. - Passing a star post with 50 or more rings lets you go to the bonus stage. - Collecting 7 Chaos Emeralds allows you to become the faster and invincible Super Sonic. When you have 50 or more rings, press the jump button in midair to become Super Sonic. You lose a ring per second as Super Sonic. The transformation wears off when you run out of rings. I'd really like to see you two play Ristar, a Sega Genesis gem made by Sonic Team. Amazing game, and possibly my favorite Genesis game! And yes, you should do totally do a 10-part Sonic 06 series. XD

Dr. Robotnik's full name is Ivo Robotnik ( Eggman is his nickname given because his body is shaped like an egg hence Eggman). When Sonic Adventure came out His name was changed to Eggman so no one would get confused but some people still refer to him as Robotnik

As a child i never could beat this game because it was "too long" and too difficult. Today i do it in literally one life and with no big effort but its still awesome ;D

Me being competitive at Sonic, it was infuriating, yet also refreshing to see someone play the game this way. There's moments where I'm just screaming internally, like when James got 98 rings and turned away from the group of 3 at the end of EHZ 1, just GAHHHHHHHHH HOW COULD YOU?! Then at the CPZ 2 boss fight how neither of them knew the easy KO, just give me the controller dammit! Still, it's amazing to see that there are still people that play this game like, well a human being, and not some competitive speedrunner that knows every last thing about the game inside and out. It's nice to see that even to this day, people still play Sonic 2 like this.

Accessing that thing that James is talking about is actually quite easy. In the area of 14:41 in the video, work your way up (using the flippers on the right) and you will see a purple conveyor belt. Get on top of this belt and do a spin dash + jump to the left, and when you land the top of the structure, just walk to the left and drop down through those bars.

To answer your question about Peach and Eggman. You were right that they were both named that in Japan and it was Princess Toadstool and Dr Ivan Robotnik in the US. I believe it was Super Mario 64 that they in game made it official that her name is Peach and Princess Toadstool is her title. In Sonic Adventure they had Sonic call Dr Robotnik as Eggman and now it is what he is from now on. I still call them by both names.

Every bonus stage gives you a chaos emerald, collect all 7 and after you get 50 rings if you jump twice you become Super Sonic (yellow super sayan looking) for about 50 seconds (1 second aprox per ring), which is similar to the Mario star invulnerability. You practically fly and can hoover over water. If you get more rings you can prolongue your Super Sonic mode.

For those who got 7 Chaos Emeralds, whatever you do, do not transform in Super Sonic mode right after you pass the finish line while on the screen. His transformation will make him stuck in the air and cannot go offscreen, ending the stage thus breaking the game.

is anyone else annoyed everytime james and mike ask a question that you know the answer to? what the significance of the rings? whats that, a chaos emerald? why happens when you get them all? you gotta be kidding guys! i know they didnt grow up segaboys like me, but come on! this is one of the greatest games on any console. plus its like the same for every sonic game: get 50 or more rings and go to bonus stage after every checkpoint get 50 rings at end of stage and try to jump through big ring for, ...um ...points? get 100 at end for 1up get all chaos emeralds and turn into supersonic with 50 rings as soon as you jump, but it drains all your rings and you turn into regular sonic besides, you dont "really beat the game" less you get all the chaos ems! forgot how to get continue Damn, come to think of its hard as fuck remembering all this shit....damn im old...

You can use tails to fly sonic out of tough situations

14:50 Jump on that paddle, hug the wall, and jump on the higher paddle up the same wall. jump to the top of the platform, run left on the conveyor belt, jump to the next platform on the left, and then gently drop of the left side of the same platform. That's how you jump through all the hoops. If you get all the Chaos Emeralds, you unlock Super Sonic.

Think you need to brush up on your Sonic facts guys. For someone whos possible favorite Genesis game is Sonic 2, your not very good at at and seem to know SFA about it.

16:06-16:24, if you collect all 7 Chaos Emeralds and then 50 rings within any given stage thereafter, Sonic becomes SuperSonic, turning completely gold, like a super Saiyan (another power-up/invincibility). The rings total starts to decrease at a rate of 1 ring/sec after you change though, so you need to constantly collect more rings throughout the stage or finish the stage before your ring counter reduces to 0 in order to continue playing as SuperSonic. And btw, collecting 100 rings throughout any stage gives you an extra life.

There is a time limit, you die when the timer reaches the 10 min mark. Getting 100 rings gives you a life, earning 10,000 points in a single act gives you a continue! Also getting all chaos emeralds unlocks Super Sonic :D I play these games way too much...
