A playthrough of Sega's 1994 mascot-platformer for the Sega Genesis, Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
By 1994, Sonic was living large. Overshadowing the likes of Mario and Mickey Mouse, the blue blur had become the most recognizable figure in kids' media after starring in a long line of hit video games and a massive merchandising blitz.
Coming just five months after the release of Sonic CD ( • Sonic CD (Sega CD) Pla... ), Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was yet another high-speed 2D platformer that offered iterative improvements on the series' formula.
The game feels a lot like Sonic CD. Each of the six zones feature similarly sprawling layouts, replete with multiple paths, hidden alcoves, bonus stages, and power-ups, and if you find all of the Chaos Emeralds, you'll be able to transform into Super Sonic in the final battle to see the true ending.
It feels surprisingly complete for what is, in essence, half a game. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was originally a hulking mammoth of a video game, so in order to cut production costs and give the development team more time to polish the latter half, it was split into two parts.
The second half of the game showed up eight months later in the form of Sonic & Knuckles ( • Sonic & Knuckles (Gene... ). It could be played on its own, but plugging the Sonic 3 cart into Sonic & Knuckles' Game Genie-like connector port allowed gamers to experience the game as it was originally intended.
Since Sonic's birthday is coming up, I thought I'd pay tribute by playing through of a few of his best remembered classic games, and few are more classic than Sonic 3.
