A playthrough of Sega's 1992 platforming game for the Sega Genesis, Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
I got all of the Chaos Emeralds during the playthrough for the best ending.
Playing this games makes me feel like I'm ten-years-old all over again. As popular as Sonic the Hedgehog had become as leverage against Mario, Sega had a ton riding on the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and he sure didn't disappoint come "Sonic 2s Day," as the game's release date had been dubbed. (It came out on a Tuesday, get it?)
Sonic 2 wasn't afraid to refine and polish the formula established in the original game - Sonic got a brand new spin dash, faux-3D bonus stages, a two-player competitive and co-op modes, and probably most memorably, his sidekick, Tails. The graphics and sound had been significantly improved (that soundtrack!!), the levels were better balanced for difficulty, and they featured a lot more variety than the older game did.
It would be easy to go for hours-on-end extolling all of Sonic 2's virtues, but there's really no need to. It's exceedingly common knowledge that the game was a big leap beyond the (already excellent) first Sonic game, and just like Sonic 1, this one ended up becoming a Genesis pack-in title as well - this time for the Model 2 consoles. It ended up becoming a huge contributor to the mammoth sales figures the system saw through the 1992 holiday season.
In my personal opinion, it's the best game that Sonic ever starred in. There have been a number of very good ones over the years, but I don't think I've ever taken to another Sonic game like I did the Sonic 2. Sonic 3, Sonic CD, Sonic and Knuckles... sure, they were all great, but they never quite recaptured the same spark ever again.
If you somehow have never played it (is there ANYONE out there that hasn't played Sonic 2 before? It has only been re-released about 80,000 times by now!), go fix that. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is one of the defining pillars of the 16-bit generation - it just as important, and just as impactful, as Super Mario World ever was.
(But please, I beg of you guys - if anyone actually reads this description, can we please not turn the comment section into an utter wasteland of bullshit "Nintendon't" and "blast processing" comments? People tend to get super snarky and spiteful whenever those debates start to pop off, so what's the point? The Genesis and the SNES were both awesome. Alright, I'll get off my soapbox now.)

Of the millions of Sonic games that Sega has made at this point, this one is by far my favorite of the series. It's difficult to find anything that I actually don't like about it :)

Totally agree not played properly since the 90s I bought a Atgames thing just for it only £25 from Argos wish I hadn't of bothered just hope it's better on the upcoming MD classic.

This is also _My_ favorite Sonic game of the Genesis trilogy. Everything from the Improved graphics from the original _Sonic the Hedgehog_ , the addition of the Spin-Dash, the control, the phenomenal soundtrack, Super Sonic, Tails, And I even dig the level design... With the exception of the cheap shots 1st time players will find. I remember playing _this_ hundreds of times over Sonic 1 & 3K more than I can even count. I can safely say (Please Don't attack me those who prefer the 3rd game) that *this* is UNQUESTIONABLY the best _Sonic the Hedgehog_ game on the Genesis. It's a good reason why it was chosen over Sonic 3 on the upcoming Genesis Mini!

This game has perhaps the most fascinating history of beta versions, with many known ones floating around. Then, there's also the fact that there were close to twenty zones considered, including Dust Hill Zone (its theme song became Oil Ocean Zone, while the latter's original theme became Casino Night Zone 2P), and Hidden Palace Zone's theme became Mystic Cave Zone 2P's theme. The unused track was apparently supposed to be cutscene music; after collecting all seven emeralds, Sonic would then go to the Hidden Palace Zone, and at the end, that music would play and the player would learn how to become Super Sonic. Finally, this game was supposed to have a very ambitious time travel story, hence why Hill Top Zone looked prehistoric.

The Nick Arcade beta even had some *outstanding* character animations for Sonic, which were, for some unbeknownst reason, removed entirely. The Shame :'(

20 zones would've been way too long for a game like this so I'm glad they cut it down to 11. Not even Sonic 3 and Knuckles had that many and it had to be cut in half for being too big for one Genesis cart. Another thing was that Chemical Plant was planned to be a later zone instead of being the 2nd when time travel was considered.

Yep it's a classic. Everything that's been said about Sonic 2 has been said already for the past two decades now. While never my favorite Sonic game, it was surely an enjoyable look at the Hedgehog's history, a nostalgic one for many of us. Fun times, 90s kids forever ❤️

I'm one of those guys who believes that there were some things that the Genesis did better, and some that the SNES did better - but that I was damn happy to have both systems. It was one of those generations of gaming where as long as you used a discerning eye (or had a couple of well-stocked rental stores), well, it was just a good time to be alive. =3 And I'll always remember Sonic 2 as the game that taught me that yes, I can use a stage select code any time I like, and that no, that doesn't mean I'm any better at the stages beyond the ones I was skipping for being roadblocks to my younger self. ;3

I remember playing this in school in a real Genesis. So fun. I can beat it will all Chaos Emeralds. This game not only debuted Tails, but also Super Sonic. This very game showcased the Blast Processing commercial.

I still like Sonic 1 but Sonic 2 just made so many improvements to the gameplay that it makes it kind of hard to go back to the first game.

I remember getting this when I was around 9 years old. I still have my Genesis/CD/32X. I play this on SCART at 4:3, 1080p. My 4 year old daughter absolutely loves this game. If you haven’t already you should do a play through of Sonic CD. I get some people don’t like it. It never got the respect it deserves. All old school Sonic games are good in my book. You can’t beat Sega for having the best 2D graphics that goes for Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast. NEO GEO is the only console to be on par with Saturn for 2D graphics. I get Batman returns and Batman Forever were shit on Genesis but the games could of been better on Genesis if allowed to have been.

I remember playing this on Sonic Mega Collection Plus on Gamecube. It was nice(though i never had the courage to finish it). Among the 3 original Sonic games, this one is the best.

A friend relative of my cousins had a 32X w/Genesis, this and Doom where the first games i saw in action, one day they where dropped in the ground of the patio forsaken that soon they gifted me everything and i felt happy that i owned a broken 32X, the rest was some games & hook ups

The Oil Ocean is the farthest I've ever gotten on my original Genesis copy. Granted, I was never able to get all the Emeralds, but this game was pretty much my childhood.

One thing I don't like is how too easy it is to trigger Super Sonic, therefore drowning out the awesome music. The Genesis controller had 3 buttons, how hard would it have been to designate like the C button to triggering Super Sonic?

Good old Sonic 2 never get old, of course I have beaten this game quite a lot of times, and my friends are striving to get the world record of the game. One of the most difficult task ever in a videogame is get the 7 chaos emeralds in this game, change my mind. There a lot of stories about Sonic 2, then it is certainly one of the most special games from all times.

First time I saw Super Sonic was when a friend and I had played through the 2 player Special Stage levels trying to beat each other dozens of times, and we both got really good at them! He suggested we go for all the Chaos Emeralds in the main game, and I said sure. He played as Sonic, and I would control Tails during the special stages, and we worked together to get them all, and we did on the last checkpoint in Hill Top Zone. Neither of us knew what "Now Sonic can change into Super Sonic" meant until he got 50 rings in Mystic Cave Zone, and we both were blown away!

This is my favorite Sonic game. 3 and Mania may have more diversity and bells and whistles. But this is the perfect balance and length for me. Also the one with the perfect sonic speed.

Mario Kart popularity seems to have only gotten bigger, while Sega failed Sonic till Sonic Mania came along and finally gave the blue hedgehog the kick up the ass he needed.
