I can't understand why everybody says that the song doesn't make sense. Maybe it's because I don't speak natively english, but I can understand it perfectly. TL;DR: The song speaks about similarities between Sonic and Metal Sonic by giving comparations of various objects that, though can look like different (and sometimes superior) things, are really the same. It could be even a prelude to the dialogues of Metal Sonic in Sonic Heroes. "Ice and water": two states of the materials "Steak and cow": meat in two different forms "Autumn, this year and last year": The same station in two different years, with almost identical characteristics. "Spark and burn": A case of japanglish. "Burn" refers to the fire. A spark and fire can burn. "Rain and cloud": again, two states of the materials. "Tuesday, Wednesday, so is Friday": Three days in which usually a routine is followed. "How 'bout moons and headlights": Both can illuminate a dark night. "What I say and what I think": Usually our words reflect our thoughts. "A, B, C, D, E, F…": At the end, simple letter which alone don't have an specifical meaning. "A short while ago I was born, and I memorized by a lot of names": This is about Metal Sonic when he was created. It's a case of japanglish that tries to state that he was made with Sonic's strenghts but trying to overcome his weaknesses. "Air and oxygen": We breath air, which is composed by many elements, but we can be given pure oxygen if needed in case of an illness. "Money and wallet, sterling sparkling": Again a case of japanglish. The first reffers to paper currency, the second to credit/debit cards, the third to coins. All of them used to pay. "History and history books": You can learn of history by living it or by reading it. "Night and universe": It's more in a poetical way. It reffers to the starry sky. "Human ocean, foot in pool": A bit poetical. Means that something that can appear as really big to someone, to others could look really small. "Imagery and real life": You can record something to "live it" again. "A long time ago one caveman had a busy life making tons of names": Though a history lesson, this reffers to Sonic, who had to develope all his abilities since he was born, when Metal Sonic was created with all of them. "Everything is born from this planet: a number, a TV, even thoughts that entertain": With "this planet" it means something that was useful to develope the civilization as we know it. We needed numbers to start understanding our world; the TV was an invention that allowed to be in other places without actually being there, therefore allowing a better understanding of the world; and our thoughts led to ideas that made possible other inventions. "Everything came out of this planet: a boyfriend, a pencil, even your new videos": With this we have the opposite: things that we could want but aren't really needed. Babies can be born even if there isn't love between two persons; you don't need to write everything if you understand things correctly; and, well, we (maybe) could make it without Netflix or RU-vid. Both of cases are alike in the way that both were created when people started to think, understand and manipulate their environment. Well, I think it's everything.

this is one of the rare moments where i'm truly proud to be a fan of sonic.

At first I didn't understand what the lyrics are even about or why it's in a Sonic movie of all things, but now that we have the full song, it makes so much sense!! It's Metal Sonic's theme song!! The song speaks of Evolution and how far we have advanced. Countless years of capturing the likeness of life and putting it into a machine has been perfected into one single entity, and that is Metal Sonic, like Eggman said!! So awesome!!

This gives me hope we can finally get the rest of the OST one day

It's really neat hearing this song with these changes I didn't even know existed.

Imagine having a clone that knows and felt everything and absolutely everything you've felt and been through. And you're forced to fight it and whenever you land a sucessful hit you feel the exact same pain as if you're fighting your parallel. If metal sonic had experienced a grusome death just imagine how Sonic felt in the inside wether its mentally or physically.

It's always cathartic to see people going out of there way to preserve history like this. Thank you for this! With this staring to come out, I propose that SEGA should go out of their way and make a brand new DVD release of the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA; with HD picture quality, English dub & JP sub options, special features, and a bonus CD than contains the original soundtrack of the OVA to preserve it for good and make your guys' great effort of preserving the original OST more meaningful. This would be absolutely *perfect* ,in my eyes, and I would like to see this happen. *PLEASE* SEGA! Make it happen!

As a longtime hardcore collector of Sonic franchise music... holy shit I cannot thank enough the people who made this possible. This is so cool!!

This silly movie was my childhood. We had a family friend who made me a bootleg version of the DVD, with a cover case and everything. I used to watch it pretty much religiously, I even tried to make my own AMV (I was like, 7 or something with a copy of premiere elements, can’t say it was probably any good). The person that made me that DVD is no longer with us, they died of cancer shortly after I got the DVD, so I don’t remember them too well, but I’ll always have a special place in my heart for them that glows when anything about this movie is mentioned.

I would like to imagine the conversation went something like this: "Hey, did you work on the Sonic OVA?" "Yeah, why?" "Would you happen to have the lyrics of the credits song?" "Why would you just want the lyrics?" _sends the entire song_

To the man who instead of just sending the lyrics or giving some sparse details or anything else and instead gave these guys a copy of the track, THANK YOU! You are an absolute legend mate.

The fact that this song and most of the OST for the Ova were discovered after so many years is amazing. Truly glad to have lived long enough for this 🙏

I saw a comment talking about the song meaning, saying it's likely comparisons in abstract form. While I like that theory I have a different reading. Everything mentioned in the verses are concepts you teach children. "Ice and water, steak and cow / Autumn, this year and last year" Forms of matter; differences between animals and the food we eat; the passing of time - concepts we think we know intrinsically but are very much taught. "A, B, C, D, E, F, G..." with this theory it's like a mantra to repeat what you've been taught to remember it.' The childlike imagery makes sense when the song reminisces that "A short while ago, i was born". The "memorizing lots of names" line is probably about education. The bad kind. The kind where you know the what but not the why. This is why the song talks a lot of whats to try and describe a why. Concrete things to describe an abstract feeling. It's very much about Metal Sonic. Recall that he starts the OVA with one mindset and ends with another. The song is about reconciliation what you're taught with what you observe. And the differences in how things are vs how they look. The first chorus says "look alike" while the second one says "are alike". A difference in mindset. - Although the song still ends with "new and universal look-a-likes". In the second verse, "imagery and real life" is (similar to the "steak and cow" line) about separating the two. Again, what you've learned vs what you see and what to do when those conflict. In addition, the foundation of learning is pattern recognition. Noticing things that look alike. The second verse also has more abstract and complicated topics in general. Things that look or are alike but *aren't the same thing* "Air and oxygen" are not synonymous. "History and history books" What you've been taught and what's real, yet again being compared and (through context of "looking alike") being separate. A lot of the comparisons listed are about man-made objects and things they mimic in the world too. So there's your metal vs organic comparison. These things are alike but are different. Why are they different - that's the core moral quandary. The bridge is the bit difficult to pass. But I think it's taking the opposite approach to the verses. While the verses talk about things that look alike but are very different. The bridge brings up completely separate things and implies that they are similar because of their link to the planet. "A number, a TV, even thoughts that entertain" are all forms of communication, even if they seem wildly different. "everything came out of this planet" is the line after. Considering the man-made vs natural theming in the song (and metal sonic's insistence that there should be only one sonic), The interesting idea here is that things are alike because of their origin - man-made objects and natural objects were born from the planet because humans and life is a part of that planet. That things are different for other reasons. I also like the fact that "I notice" sounds very much like *I know this* . So yea. I like the other theory but I don't like the evidence for it. I think the song is exploring a different moral quandary than just "look at the differences here". It's using comparisons to highlight differences and the reconciliation of different information. The themes of education, learning, changing your mind, whats instead of whys, the childlike imagery, the progression of topics, the man-made vs natural debate and the idea of becoming more than your origin. It's a very clever song from my point of view. - thanks for coming to my ted talk haha

Finally hearing the full version after so many years... Strange, isn't it?

I always had a hunch that there was supposed to be more to that song, but I always chalked it up to being the kind of Sonic knowledge that I simply never found out about, and never bothered to look further into -- however, I didn't expect it to be something that was completely undiscovered by the rest of the community (up until now)!

Half of these plays are from me. What a freaking jam. Also love the deep philosophy in the lyrics (even if they seem to not make sense on the surface).

When I first discovered the existence of the OVAs, I felt like I found a great treasure in my life since I' ve been a Sonic fan since my first memories. Everything around the OVA movie, I loved it for no reason, and knowing now that the original "Look Alike" has been recovered from the Lost media limbo I just felt like the first Time I heard that song on a OVA trailer. That moment when you realize this song is (intentionally or not) about the philosophical problem of Identity and how we distinguish an object (i.e substance) as being itself through examination and classification of its attributes. And in the end, the singer comes to the monistic conclusion that all objects are in fact part of one extended substance (“Everything is born from this planet/Everything came out of this planet/I notice different things that are alike/I notice new and universal look-a-likes”) A song I thought was nonsense as a kid might actually be accidentally profound

The caveman then used his cave wife's name as the signature so he wouldn't lose track of all the names he had made. If you make it a daily practice to write down two things you are grateful for in the morning, it will bring more positivity into your life and that will increase your chances of attaining your New Year's resolutions. Consistency is key.

I think my favourite Lost Media story is about the Sonic OVA and the credits music/Look-a-Like From what I remember, the full version of that song was never properly released for the longest time, and someone got into contact with someone who worked on the OVA and simply asked what the lyrics were then was given the Full clean version instead, it was wild

Okay, so I've never been one to believe in the Mandela Effect, but this song is my example of it. I could've sworn we got the full version of this song a decade ago. Back in 2011 when Generations was coming out, I made a massive Sonic playlist to celebrate, and this song was on it. I remember Googling the "full" version, downloading it, looking up lyrics, the whole nine. Years later when my computer died and I had to start the playlist from scratch, I tried to find the song again and only found the short edit. I just figured it was another instance of something obscure being buried in the internet archives, but now people are saying this is the first time it's existed and I'm just like, "But I could've sworn..."

O_O ... I have been searching for the full version of this song for at least fifteen years now...and finally, it turns up. Whoever emailed this track to the world has no idea how much this means to so many of us. The only drawback is that it was uploaded on the same day that Sonic lost a Death Battle for a second time. This almost makes up for that. * sigh *

Unbelievable the solo always rocked out like that and we only ever got to hear the last few notes. Plus an odd tape recorder click right before it in the original OST. Many thanks illuminor

An amazing way to finish the summer "on a sunday".

I discovered the ova trailer today which lead me to this song. This song is still fresh for me and I’m savoring this moment. This track is too sick. (I cant even)

When I saw the Sonic movie (2020), I saw a trailer for the OVA movie play before the movie I came to watch played. This song was playing during the trailer

The best part about us finally getting the OVA's soundtrack, is that we now have highquality rips of each and every song, even some that sound completely different to how many of us have interpreted them due to finally being able to hear them without any sfx or VOs. And knowing that had this not happened we likely never would have gotten any of these tracks, let alone a full soundtrack release due to licensing and such. It really is a miracle that after so long the original files were still well presereved, it's the same feeling when a new prototype is released to the public. But calling it a miricle that this was released, would be a disservice to all those who worked hard to track down anyone and everyone who may have it, so to them we are all eternally greatful.

I unapologetically love this little movie. I mean who couldn't love the line "You might know everything I'm going to do, But that's not going to help you, Since I KNOW EVERYTHING YOU'RE GOING TO DO! Strrraaaaaaannnge, iiiiisn't it? GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR".
