Just cause they don't like the story (or lack thereof) context of a game does not mean they can ignore the value of said work. Besides with the later frequent use of Cream the Bunny and Blaze the Cat by Sega in all of Sonic's multimedia, the questioning of their role in the series reality is very silly.

Ethan Benson You mean those both quite awesome games that rebooted the franchise once more, made for two great old-school experiences with both highs and lows but at any point with the long-lost charme of Playstation X-style 3D-Jump-n-Run-Action-Adventures ("Rise of Lyric") and non-linear platformers of MetroidVania-appeal ("Shattered Crystal")? Yeah, those were cool. "Rise of Lyric" is horribly unpolished and annoys me with it's framerate-issues, but since they took me back to what dragged me into gaming as a child and reminding me of the low standards I had back then, making me ask myself how I've become the cynical hater I am now, I can forgive them these mistakes, even though it's hard. And "Shattered Crystal" on the 3DS is, in my opinion, definitely to count as one of the best Sonic games. It still plays fast, but here the player really has to LOOK at the screen and PUSH buttons. I love the original three Sonic platformes, but there were quite a few times over the last years that I tried to revisit them and witnessed that he just runs and runs and runs and I can't really PLAY anything except for jumping for about two times per level. Plus: I like to play games on 100 percent. In "Shattered Crystal", this is not only possible, I am also motivated to do it. (I could talk of these games for hours now, but I leave it here.) I wouldn't recommend producing more than these two spin-off-games to SEGA, but it definitely is NOT an abomination. There are two charming, delightful games that were fun to play and still different from the former Sonic games. One can argue that rebooting the franchise over and over again has almost killed Sonic more than once, but it makes him stronger than Mario in my opinion. Mario was always stable and solid, yeah, but they never risked anything. They just decreased the difficulty and increased graphic power. And that's it. I have so much respect for Sonic today, even though he has lots and lots of failures.

Ethan Benson Yes it is different, and that is the major problem of the Sonic franchise. It was always kind of the same in different scenarios, it switched between great 2D platformers that at one point kind of repeated themselves, and 3D third-person running, a) whose controls never and I emphasize NEVER ever worked properly so that it would be fun to play, b) whose camera angles, as it is also mentioned in the video, were horribly chosen, and c) whose level design was always and always and always the same... I swear that if SEGA ever uses this stupid giant hamster wheel loop again in a game I paid real money for, I puke into my WiiU... I'm so glad that for Sonic Boom, they for once touched the gameplay, and they touched it for good. It's a delight to play it on 3DS with this jumping mechanics and the fluent continuation in how you explore the level without being bored. And this is the point: exploration! I know I know, Sonic isn't about exploration, but I as a life-long fan of Sonic ask: why shouldn't it be? Even as a child I was kind of disappointed that those beautifully crafted levels that were so colourful and detailed just get overrun and ignored. Sonic in my very own definition isn't bound to a peticular style or genre or graphics, Sonic just needs to be a cool, young, open-hearted, outspoken hedgehog warming my heart whenever I see him, he has to have charisma, he has to have personality. That's all I want in the first place, and with that given, I will play anything from fast-paced 2D-platformer over hardly working yet awesome looking 3D-action-adventures up to strange RPG-ish games about King Arthur and Excalibur. The quality has to be debated separately, and of course Sonic Boom has many mistakes, and Sonic Generations has many many mistakes, and Sonic and the Black Knight has mistakes too, but I'm struggling with calling out different eras of Sonic games where one decade is fine and the other is the downfall. That might be the case with the Resident Evil franchise, but not with Sonic xD

didn't mean to start this... But really, I actually kind of like Shadow. It IS a somewhat decent game. Gameplay was pretty darn good, story was meh, because a lot of inconsistencies... and I kinda see your point, because the game is EXTREMELY out of place for the series, but if it were its own game, it probably would be considered good. Except for being tedious and boring at times....

I dont care if they use the same stages as long as they restructure them to be different. They put a lot of work into those stages. That is a form of art and perfection on those early Sonic Games. I really liked the Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles game. Those games were epic!

Andrew Fazz I love Sonic 3 & Knuckles too but reimagined or not, it's still the same stage. I would rather have a completely new experience. Seeing Studiopolis shows they're capable of doing that so why rehash old stages? Wasn't that the point of Sonic Generations? To top that, it's not even an equal amount of old and new. Excuse me, but these two were the best games, Along with Adventure 2. And Unleashed was really really fast. So i say all of these were good. The only problem in this time was Rise of the Lyric.

Also I said Colors was decent because people say that's when the whole 'kiddy phase' of Sonic started. I happen to like Colors a lot it's the Sonic last game I enjoyed.

shadow the hedgehog was my first 3d sonic game and i have a lot of memories with it and one thing i can say is that it got rid of what i hate in sonic heroes the mandatory switching characters. why cant i just play as the speed characters and use the other characters for other path ways making it easier on the player but if you only want to use sonic then its your pick, but that game would advise you to switch NOT force you to switch. they could have done this with suggestive level design.

Treesicle don't worry they are releasing a patch for sonic boom in Europe and most likely everywhere else and it will fix a lot of glitches I know that because the update is 1.6 gigabytes

Well, I actually like Lost World... And also, I think Sonic Boom is purposefully inconsistent: it's meant to be non-canonical.

Hyrule Warriors is non canonical and its still a great game so that's no excuse for the lack of quality. Nor can it be the different dev team since Sly 4 and Halo 4 had different devs and still were amazing games. SEGA just has bad direction with Sonic games if it lets its flagship series sink like this. You'd never see another publisher treat its flagship series so carelessly.

Shadow the Hedgehog was the shit. I honestly don´t understand what people didn´t like about it. It had good music, good animation, cool story and awesome gameplay. It was completely underrated for what it was.

Agreed. Sonic Unleashed is hand's down the best Sonic game ever, sadly it's underrated, due to the hate on the Werehog stages, yet again when has their ever been a good Sonic fighting game? Cough cough Unleashed.

I never finished Sonic Unleashed due life becoming busy, but I loved the game. The Werehog was great and I liked the story in general, it was in fact one of my favorite games of Sonic. Colours was good but indeed short, which was too bad.

***** same here. I cant see it got such a bad rep. Unleashed is personally my favorite 3d game in the series. (I hated the wii version though) it was the one that I had the most fun with. I even liked the werehog levels (except skyscraper scamper)

The main reason for Heroes' problems was the PS2. It was originally going to be a GameCube and XBOX exclusive, but Sony told SEGA that they had to port it to PS2, or else they wouldn't be allowed to release a game on their system ever again. Since Heroes wasn't built for systems like the PS2 at all, they had to redo several things to get it ported to the PS2.

Don't judge, but I liked Sonic '06. It was likely because of the fact that I was a kid and found a new Sonic game and didn't bother looking at the inconsistencies, but I did like the plot elements introduced, soundtrack, gameplay, and aesthetics that the game provided.

Eh, older Sonic games were WAY better. Despite their cheesy voice acting and shoddy animations, they did have a great charm to them. Maybe it's my nostalgia kicking up. But I believe Sonic started to decline after they got rid of all the playable character narratives and choice of storyline, as well as their music turning into super dubstep techno crap.

Shion Sonozaki Shadow isn't a spinoff either.

Sonic himself barely makes cameos in the game, dark and gritty for a character who was introduced to be dark and gritty is not a problem. When they tried to make sonic dark and gritty (sonic06) then there is a problem.

Shion Sonozaki Its a problem in STH too. They tried way to hard to make Shadow "cool and edgy" that it just comes off as forced and silly in the wrong ways. Shadow isn't meant to be super dark and gritty he is meant to be darker than Sonic, yes but not "edgy". Also just because Sonic doesn't appear in the game often doesn't inherritly make it a spinoff. The mechanics are all like Sonic games at the time just with the addition of guns. You have a spindash, homing attack, collect rings, and attack enemies all like a traditional Sonic game. Also the last story continues from Heroes and is canon to the official Sonic Universe. It is NOT a spinoff. Sorry.

What's wrong with making Tails and Knuckles play like Sonic though? Ala classic Sonic...just gives you a different set of abilities to make the end. I'd settle for more treasure hunting for Knuckles though, so long as they used the SA1 model rather than the SA2 model. Same goes for Tails with shooting stages, so long as he uses the SA1 Gamma model rather the Tails/Eggman model from SA2 (which was just slow and sluggish). I can see Shadow needing a different gameplay type though as his abilities are identical to Sonics and duplicate characters is a waste, really, (both can use Chaos Control, afterall). But actually I do like the idea of putting him in Werehog like stages should another Adventure come along (so long as they are not as longwinded as the Unleashed Werehog stages were of course!). They were pretty fun at times in small doses.

imo, i'd say from start to finish, Colors is still the best so far in terms of 3D Sonics. However, it's not so good that it makes other games around it's time not worth checking out such as Generations and to some extent Unleashed.

I stick to the games that are back from the Sega, that was my childhood, and thats where I have the most fun. I have a current Sonic game for my PS3, and I'm not really excited about the camera angles always going so wonky. But meh, I haven't kept up with the new Sonic games, all I know is he will always be my favorite game character.You want a game that'll test you? Play the classics. I can't make it to some checkpoints with a ring I swear. Barely make it through a whole level with 70+ rings. Its always a fun time, the sounds, the music, will always be fun. I think people that know about the classic games would play them over the ones now, but then again, people do have different interests. I mean come on, its Sonic after all lol.

I don't see Sonic dying out anytime soon. Even if it hits the lowest of lows, it will always have a flame. As long as the classics are out, it'll always live on. When I see Sonic, I see him for his speed, and like I either stated in a recent comment to you, or to someone else, its also his cockiness. His sarcasm, all hilarious stuff. I'm curious as to why they took the paths that they have with the characters, making Tails like an einstein and Knuckles like some big huge Echidna version of Donkey Kong. But I hear you definitely, I'll have to go out and get one of the newer games and check them out.

semaseri x I never seen Shadow as a match for Sonic. I thought Shadow relied on weapons and vehicles. The first time I seen Shadow was in a racing/fighting type of game. And he skated around with hover/rocket boots. I kinda like Shadow, hes pretty cool, people take a liking to him, I see him as no match for Sonic, but who knows. His combo thing in the Sonic game there we were talking about, his combos seemed to be overpowered and good. Being able to stick to a target to throw kicks and punches. (stick as in like float in the air to beat them up or whatever).

" The fact that it's a cartoon series about a bunch of colorful woodland critters fighting against a goofy mad scientist called Eggman who fights said woodland critters with robots who look like they came out of a Happy Meal and built a giant Death Star ripoff with his goofy looking face on it.

Andrew Tuell "Goofy" is your opinionated term right? It was never proven he was supposed to be a light heated cartoon. His creator and game designer originally created him to look cool and appealing to a lot of people. And it worked, in the end.

He said that Sonic 1 had 6 chaos emeralds, then Eggman went for 7 chaos emeralds in Sonic 2. PAY ATTENTION.

It's ironic that everyone is yelling at him to pay attention, when in fact he was paying more attention than everyone complaining and the person who made the video. :P
