Swans and Sonic Youth toured together and were very good friends early on. A few years ago Thurston Moore actually opened for Swans and then came on stage and hugged Michael Gira at the end. Two amazing bands with a really long history
You are easily the top reaction channel I know, covering full albums -alternative ones at that- and giving genuine commentary on every single song all the way through. Wish you every success in your content.
That album I hold dear to me! It's where I heard how indie rock could be musically complex but also commercial with classic rock elements but also experimental with feedback and loud guitars
Thia video is going to attract the weirdest niche of people. People that search and watch very specific reactions and sonic youth fans under the age of 40.
I love this album! im glad you enjoyed it. Their other stuff is also very worth checking out, id reccomend either "Goo" or "Sister" for your next listen. Both great albuns
Man you HAVE to listen to the self titled album by the violent femmes. Almost every song on the album is a classic and most of the songs are really cool acoustic punk souning jams that were really influential at the time. Keep up the great work Smags.
yessirrr this band and album is classic Same recs as the usual! Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it In People LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver Built To Spill - Perfect From Now On
The first song Teenage Riot is actually about slacker guitar god J Mascis (from Dinosaur Jr) becoming president. The music video also references a lot of influences for the band. Nice video by the way. I'm a big Sonic Youth fan so i'd love you for you to check out more. I'd say Evol is my favorite album though.
Ok so, so glad you got around to this one. This is one of the albums that got me into like non-mainstream alternative and indie stuff when I was like 17. It's one of the landmark alternative albums of the 80s that kind of ushered in more mainstream acceptance of the sound that would eventually lead to the Nirvana explosion of 91/92(they toured together with Nirvana and another band that helped usher in the 90s sound Dinosaur Jr). i definitely think Goo is a good place to go after this one because it was them hitting a more mainstream sound even though, at the time, the "mainstream" sound was only just being created, so I guess, in a way, Goo is a pioneering record. It's also just got some killer tracks but I really wanted you to listen to this one first when they were at their most experimental yet satisfying moment of the 80s when they really broke through(at least on an indie level). Thank you for listening to this! I only have two more on my hit list that I want you to listen to although I will revise that list soon Im sure and someone else said it but Dinosaur Jr - You're living all over me is another important one in the creation of the "alternative" sound. Recommendations Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven(just had a new album that came out like yesterday but I wouldn't start at that album even though it's good) Lil Ugly Mane - Volcanic Bird Enemy and the Voiced Concern
I would love it if you reacted to some of Nick Cave's work. You can't go wrong with 'Let Love In' but also try 'Skeleton Tree' if you want something very moody and emotional.
You should listen to ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space by spiritualized or violent femmes by violent femmes. The former is probably the one of if now the best shoe gaze album and the ladder is a 35min acoustic punk genre fusion masterpiece
yo smags, love the reaction as always. recommendations: car seat headrest - teens of denial the smashing pumpkins - siamese dream new order - low life joy division - unknown pleasures
Your videos always come out right in time for my morning shit on the toilet, Smags! I always sit on the toilet for thirty minutes watching your whole reaction
Good to see the youth of today listening to the Sonic Youth and other bands from my own youth. I grew up with this, saw them in Glasgow in 1989 touring it. Then again in 1990 for the Goo tour. You're not sure what genre it belongs to and want to be put in that time period. I'm from that time period. That whole period from 1985 - to about 1991/2 was just so good for music. With no streaming services and very limited radio airplay (only really John Peel in the UK), the only way to hear this was buying it (You'd probably have to order it especially too). Or you would go around to a friend's house and play each others music. Sonic Youth were Sonic Youth, they didn't belong to a genre. You could argue they were a continuation of the New York No Wave scene, then you end up falling down the Glenn Branca rabbit hole.
Just found your channel and love your stuff. Sonic Youth is awesome. You should do Goo by them next, it's got more of a typical alt rock or grunge sound to it.
Bro Sonic youth is my favorite band ever hands down. They're considered grunge rock or noise rock, they're kinda famous for their distorted and detuned guitars, the ways they break from melodies and go into noisy sound scapes. They were friends with Kurt Cobain and Nirvana and the bands of the grunge scene in the early 90's🤟 The band is sadly broken up 😭 but they have a vast discography and all the members have their own bands and projects that are worth checking out. Oh also I love your reactions brother, love the way you analyze the lyrics and break it down really well, good stuff 👍
The title of “Hey Joni” is a play on the rock standard song “Hey Joe” (most famously recorded by The Jimi Hendrix Experience) but with Joni Mitchell’s name in there, I think the lyrics aren’t about her but it’s funny nonetheless. Loving the reactions btw. The follow up to this album “Goo” is also great!
Thanks for another great review. As a guitars lover, I recommend The Gathering (female fronted band). From their metal period I like albums Mandylion (1995) and If_Then_Else (2000), and experimental How to Measure a Planet? (1998) is just awesome. From their later "alternative rock" era, I prefere especially Souvenirs (2003) and Home (2006). Enjoy!
She daydream on my nation until I sonic youth Ok ok im going Recs: Sigur Ros-() Built to spill-Perfect from now on Spiritualized-Ladies and Gentlemen we are floating in space
If you want to hear Sonic Youth similar to this I’d definitely go with Goo or Evol, but, if you want something different, check out Murray Street or Rather Ripped. Both are post-2000’s SY and have a clean sound compared to SY’s usual noise sound. They feature b-e-a-utiful guitar work
Teenage Riot is inspiring by Dinosaur Jr mastermind J Mascis. When he sings To get me outta bed, it seems to be a joke about Mascis sleepy demeanor and vocal style but explosive guitar 🎸💥
Their album "Experimental Jet Set Trash And No Star" and "Washing Machine" is my favorite from them.. ik lot of fans hated those albums but i kinda developed a liking to it..
Unrelated to this band, but Parannoul’s After the Magic is a must listen from this year. The production will blow you away it’s such an amazing experience
You need to listen to Zen Arcade By Husker Du. Concept album and hardcore punk at its finest. Except Husker Du make great melodic melodies and amazing lyrics. You’d really dig it.
Teenage Riot is about their friend, J Mascis, from Dinosaur Jr.. You should react to “You’re Living All Over Me” and “Bug”.. Dino’s 2nd and 3rd album from the 80’s..
If you want to dig more into noise rock, i would recommend Atomizer by Big Black. The bands frontman Steve Albini produced hudreds of iconic records like Nirvanas In Utero!
yoo u gotta react to "gods country" by chat pile. its a sludge metal/hardcore album from "the flenser" (same label as deathconciousness) and its one of my fave albums of all time. i dont wanna say too much i hope you can do a reaction to this i would love to see a first reaction, its a truly phenomeal album with some of the best textures in metal ive ever heard
I subscribed and I don't subscribe to anything. I hate music. But sonic youth is my favorite band and this is their opus. You gave me thoughts in retrospect I didn't anticipate especially in regards to hyperstation and eliminator jr. Cheers to getting a post punk/no waver to comment on boo tube. You get it. And what officially scientifically hit you on "the sprawl" was walls of sound. You get it bro love you Jesus saves
Sonic Youth were great in their elder years too. Not unlike the Beastie Boys and Dinosaur Jr. Try SY albums Rather Ripped and The Eternal. The music video for Sacred Trickster 🏴☠️
idk if someone recomended this already but yuck's self titled is a great album back to back. also i dont know if youre interested in music in other languages but if you are check out nueva numancia by juanita y los feos and any album from triángulo de amor bizarro, two great bands :)
Those bands are kind of like tribute bands to 80’s post punk (TAB) and noise rock/shoegaze/grunge (Yuck). They’re not bad, but they don’t bring anything new to the table, so I don’t know if they’re worth reacting to.
i would love you to give the album “abissama” by incredible polo a listen. it’s beautiful, and highly underrated (imo). i’ve searched all over and i couldn’t find a video of someone reacting to it or breaking it down, and i would love for you to be the first to do so. you’re amazing smags.
If you are not affraid to explore, you should listen to soda stereo. Mainly... "sueño stereo". They're from argentina and are like the beatles of latin amerifa
@@smags1082 its not better than sung tongs or feels which should be a higher priority, but i like it quite a lot. more standard pop songs but still manage to be interesting and really well written. stride rite and defeat are some of the best songs of the year
