Back in 89 I caught Thurston Moore rummaging through my barn. He's like 8 feet tall and none of our traps stopped him. I don't know what he took but whatever it is, he can keep it. Sonic Youth rules!
@@HarkoBarf my dad has psychosis this song hits home.,Im 26 too i was 16 when i stumbled upon this album i was so fucking stoned and just rolled up in a ball in my bed it was life changing. its crazy to think about that 10 exact years. time flies
I'm mostly a metal guy, although I was into hardcore punk during high school, I can still appreciate good underground rock when I hear it. these guys, Drive Like Jehu, Fugazi, The Jesus Lizard, Pavement, etc. are a testament to timeless sounds.
I still have my VHS copy of this film. I bought it for Nirvana (oh come on, you know I wasn't the only one), but ended up watching it over and over late at night with all the lights out and being absolutely thrilled by the intensity of what the Yoof were doing.
Saw Dinosaur Jr on their multi night stand in Brooklyn. Lee Renaldo was special guest! Was awesome!!! Him & J have gray/white hair now, but still rockin!!! Amazing performance.
When I saw 1991 The Year Punk Broke for the first time,,, I was SO entranced, transfixed and bloody enamored by how otherworldly Sonic Youth was!! I have been a fan ever since ! There is a pain in my soul to have to accept that they are no more. I feel the same way about Nirvana! Such a short but miraculous time for art, thought and music!! My biggest and most sincere hope is that there are still people out there who feel as I do and who are creating music that is way different than all of this mass produced , auto tuned crap that people are -told- to like by TV, Facebook , twitter etc. if you🫵 are a person who feels the way I do ( young or older) DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!! Grab up an instrument ( not a computer) and get rockin! Music is the cure for a troubled soul in troubling times! When I didn’t have any friends when I was young, I felt like I did because of these bands and how different they were because that’s who I was,, different!❤
Oh my..this brings back memories of the first I heard this on a walkman cassette tape I bought and I was in Jacksonville laying down in the back of my parents stationwagon....in the back compartment staring out the back glass looking at the moon and riding into the night with my Dad at the wheel and my Mom shotgun. And my Mom was like "I can hear that noise coming from your headphones, turn it down!" So I didn't. wow. 1985? It was 85 or 86. Such a sweet memory.
This post has some of the oldest comments! I remember viewing this when it had a handful of views. I too bought this because of Nirvana but came to love SY and Mascis as well. Wore this tape out.
i wish i had the chance to see SY back in those days,And the year punk broke is the best touring/live/documentray/artist/band video ever in my opinion! awesome!!!
The point isn't to sing nice and lovely. the point is to get your feelings across in the way you feel comfortable with - it's all about putting how you feel in the way you see fit. They're not doing it to look cool it's all for a reason.
@kalemarefrite THANK YOU! I try and try to get through to these over-nostalgic, lost souls but they never listen. There's no reason to live in the yesterday when so much is also happening in the today.
Definitely! His drumming on their first works--up to and including Daydream Nation--is phenomenally creative; the part stucturing is ingenious. He shows that drumming does not have to be relegated to a mindless backbeat for mindless music.
@jimellis123 it's the name of a documentary made about bands around 1991. it includes nirvana and sonic youth for sure, can't think of the others since it's been so long since i've seen it. it's called 1991: the year punk broke and that's where this video comes from.
@kalemarefrite thank you i thought that there was only crap today until i found a gold mine of great bands everyone who thinks there is only crap today just look around
@ElectricPhase this is taken from the film The Year That Punk Broke. It has awesome footage of Nirvana and Sonic Youth playing festivals with a lot of other great bands Dinosaur Jr. included...... CHECK IT OUT!!!!
that's what I'm always telling my Mike Portnoy loving friends but they don't get it, Steve is the Charlie Watts of the 80's and 90's; he does what needs to be done in the song and with an exceptional groove
@djdarkmonkey well i moved from LA in 2003 however one thing has remained consistent for all of time. Musicians follow the scene. In 1991 everyone wanted to be a part of the seattle scene... before that it was the LA and the whiskey GNR, and before that it was Boston with the pixies etc... Like it or not thats how it is. Its a collaboration and mood that drives creative spirit and to be a part of it is special even if your just watching it as a fan. RU-vid is a good venue now. search
If you can find the video this clip is from, BUY IT !!! It's called "1991 - The Year Punk Broke" and has footage of tons of other bands touring with them in 1991, like Nirvana (pre-Nevermind!), Dinosaur Jr., Babes in Toyland and even the Ramones. And there's tons of hilarious backstage footage, too, like Thurston Moore interviewing non English-speaking kids and Kurt Cobain strung out on heroin. Word up to this video!
Well InertiaFleur, I think that the Jagmaster didn't come out until '96. The Jazzmaster and the Jaguar did come out in the 60s, but the Jagmaster is the Squier hybrid of the two, and that didn't come out until 1996.
yeah seriously. Sonic Youth is arguably on of the most innovative rock bands in the past 20 years. They put rock into the future and have kept it there.
Hey man, everyone deserves music to enjoy if thats what people enjoy repsect them for enjoying it. They should in turn respect us for liking Sonic Youth.
everybody is allways talking about how great thurston and lee are ( wich they are :d) but almost nobody mentions the great skills of steve shelly, he's an amazing drummer, you should listen to it between 3.00 and 3:30 i realy love them:d
@scoutinternational Of course it depends where you live. Where I live theres at least 10 live shows in my capitol city, Belfast frequented by semi-popular fantastic groups like a Hawk and a Hacksaw, who are playing in april. Theres live shows nearly every month in my own town, w/piles of inventive music. From my home town as well theres a band called And So I Watch You From Afar. Post rock is not my thing but you cant deny their will to do something different, creative, and rock the fuck out.
a conversation i had with my professor at Berklee: him: what are some of your favorite bands? me: ohh i dont know, sonic youth is sick. him: sonic who? me: ummm... nevermind.
I also think there are bands who play like sonic youth still today. don't wanna spam, but a band sounding a bit like Sonic Youth (but can never get to them, especially not beat "Schizophrenia") is Love of Diagrams, an Australian band I think
