I mean, the case with Henry Darger isn't necessarily applicable to this. While Darger wasn't perfect, he is WAY better functioning than Chris, almost normal if not reclusive. Not to mention that Darger received NO recognition for what he did in his life until a short while before his death- all the things we know about him come posthumously and details are scant, whereas we know EVERYTHING about Chris. If we start misgendering/wrong-pronouning horrible criminals, it'll be a slippery slope. Because who gets to define where that line is? When does a crime become bad enough that people don't "deserve" their pronouns any more? And why don't we do this to cis criminals too? It's a double standard and it could lead us to people trying to excuse using the wrong pronouns on all criminals in the future. And even if you believe she's cis, I still think you should use her pronouns correctly. For a non-criminal and more historical example, some butch women would go by he/him in the past, even if though they were cis women. This is an established part of still-ongoing history in the Butch community. Back to criminal stuff, we don't start suddenly calling cis women by he/him when they commit horrible crimes, and we don't start calling cis men she/her. So don't do it for a trans woman/someone asking you to use their pronouns. Onto your point though, that is indeed very sad. Was the institutionalization done before the internet started tormenting her, or was it after? If it was after, I can SORT OF see her parents' logic. Her parents may not have known how abusive mental institutions can be (they should have done more research though; I'm not fully excusing them). What I mean is, if they saw the internet ruining their daughter's life, and they couldn't get it to stop, they may have thought putting her in an institution would block her from having internet access for a while? So maybe things would calm down without seeing the internet harassment, and she could try to get better? That might have been what they thought? Unfortunately a lot of parents don't realize how shitty institutions are... If they did this after the harassment of Chris-chan started, they may have felt they had no other choice. Still, they should have researched a lot of places or other options before putting her into an institution. Now, if it was BEFORE the harassment, no wonder Chris Chan has been fucked up from the start. The shit she might have suffered from being in that instution can easily make mental issues WORSE rather than better if it was an abusive and/or traumatic time for her. I used to laugh at Chris Chan jokes and memes a year ago, but the more I came to understand how her severe mental illnesses were heartlessly taken advantage of by some of the cruelest people online that I can imagine, the more I just get increasingly sad when I hear her story. Mental illness isn't an excuse to hurt others, of course. But she's also been tortured for so long that I'm not sure if she can recognize what's harmful and what isn't any more. I want the internet to lay off of her and shut up. Because I want her to be left alone online. I am actually glad she's out of prison (though I hope she's on house arrest of some sort and closely monitored) cause I imagine prison is one of the worst places for one's mental health when their mental health is this fucked already. I desperately want her to get help. Not only for her sake, but the sake of the people she's hurt. I want her to be left alone so that she can be given the help she needs. So that one day down the line, she can look back and finally feel the guilt and shame of what she has done to her family member. Right now, if she's too mentally ill to even recognize she's hurt someone and that she should feel bad about it, she can never feel the huge guilt she deserves to feel and hopefully become a better person eventually because of it. I want her to get better so that she can realize her guilt and never hurt anyone again.
