The Sonoff Basic R3 has mounting holes in it and a nicer design. Perfect for mounting to furniture for example a bed reading light or the light in a side board or the lights on top of a warderobe. The holes in the R4 don't look like mounting holes but more like guide holes for the cover.

There are small holes under the cover, I used that in the past, but they are small. Or altarnatively you can clamp the cables coming in and going out.

@@csongorvarga Thanks dude. I really liked the look of the R3. Now my R4 have arrived and I agree, holes are good, just have to find the right screws.

SECURITY WARNING Analysis of the BasicR4 hardware shows the lack of a transformer on the power supply circuit. It is confirmed that the ESP GND is at a high potential (measured at 130V on 240V mains network). THIS DEVICE IS STRONGLY NOT RECOMMEND FOR HARDWARE HACKING such as attaching external sensors as any wires would create a risk of high voltage shock. This include the 4 pins serial connector that should only be used for flashing while the device is not connected to mains. Beside, Sonoff Basic are known for weak power supplies not suitable for such hacking.

Thanks a lot for this. I think it is a common good practice to flash any ESP device whilst it is not plugged into the mains, but attaching any sensor that leave the case is also a very valid point!

Flashing whilst plugged into the mains should be allowed... Natural selection... Those dumb people will not survive!! 😂🤣

What is the size of the flash memory on the R4?

Any idea what the difference is between R2, R3 & R4??

Different hardware design, newer models have bluetooth which offers quicker and easier pairing, some models have RF variant. But in every day use not much.

Having ordered the Sonoff R4 version but not received it yet , a quick question . When connecting (pairing) the unit must the magic switch function also be enabled somehow ? Or will the magic switch work strait after the unit is ‘paired’? Regards
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 6 месяцев назад
Just enable the magic button function in the Settings.

Thanks for another great video. I have a question about this device : Can i use Sonoff with MQTT without cloud access in Home Assistant. I would like to use Sonoff as an alternative to Shelly. Thank you for your answar.
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 10 месяцев назад
I am not up-to-date with Home Assistant. I think there is a Sonoff integration now, but that probably works over the cloud. What I know from the past that people used to re-flash Sonoff devices to Tasmota firmware and get local communication over MQTT.
@FelixAlejandroGuzmangarcia
@FelixAlejandroGuzmangarcia 9 месяцев назад
You can load the esphome firmware and then connect it to home assistant

This new Sonoff Basic R4 and video shows a three buttons wireless *R5, I could give me more information about this button. Thank you
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 10 месяцев назад
This R5 actually has 6 buttons, both ends of each button works as a separate switch. Once you link it to the Sonoff Basic, it appears are a separate device. After this you can set up scenes: "If button1 on R5 pressed, than....". And that is it.

I am searching for a switch to on/off my Honeywell modulator thermostat for opentherm. max 24 Volt. is this SONOFF BASICR4 Wi-Fi Smart Switch suitable and Tuya Smart App compatible?
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 10 месяцев назад
This is not compatible with Tuya, and it is not good for 24V. It runs on mains and it switches the mains on the output.

@@csongorvarga Thank you for the info. I am still looking for a solution to be able to switch my old modelating Honeywell thermostat that is open therm compliant remotely on and off in combination with thermostat knobs. There are no open therm Tuya compatible solutions that support to individually heating the different rooms.
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 10 месяцев назад
@@r.fortal6322 I think there are Tuya compatible thermostats which could be a replacement for a Honeywell thermostat. And those have the relay built in. I worked with Beca, but there are other brands.

Why would you choose this over the mini extreme ? Are they not the same thing but the mini is just smaller ?
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 10 месяцев назад
If you have a neutral wire, the mini extreme is smaller and easier to install. Features otherwise are the same. I would only use the Basic R4 if you don't have/need a physical switch, or you don't have a neutral wire at the switch and need to use the magic switch mode.

Excellent video! Can I install the sonoff basic in my switch and at the same time use a tapo Smart bulb dimmable? So with my phone I will be able to dim the light. Is that would be possible? Thank you
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 8 месяцев назад
This is a simple on/off switch, this does not dim.

@@csongorvarga thank you so much for your reply, that's correct you are right, but my question was if in addition if I add a smart bulb💡 with dimming options .. will the smart switch interfere and block the smart bulb? Basically can this smart switch and a smart bulb work together? Thank you so much
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 8 месяцев назад
@@jaimeortiz3465 Yes, it would work together, but I don't see the point. If you have a smart light bulb you can turn it on and off, so don't need a switch for it. Unless you want to keep this physical switch and it's use. But yes, when the smart light bulb is on you can still control it, but when you turn the switch off, you smart bulb will show as offline in the app.

@@csongorvarga thank you so much ! You made a very good point. What about if I use a smart switch with a normal bulb. Will I be able to use turn on/off via the app and also to use the conventional Switches? Let's say if my mobile if off..can I still use the switches manually? Thank you so much !🙏
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 8 месяцев назад
@@jaimeortiz3465 Yes, that is the whole point. The smart switch is powered all the time, and it just cuts the power to the bulb. But the switch (the white box) still received power so it can get commands from the mobile app and also checks if the manual switch was operated. That also means that now you have a small consumer running 24/7.
