Sony’s new WH-1000XM5 noise-canceling headphones are the company’s most advanced to date - but also the most expensive at $400. For that money, you get a fresh design, upgraded sound, better active noise cancellation than ever, and improved voice call quality. But they're very similar to the 1000XM4s, giving Sony fans little reason to upgrade.

Comfort. Heavy and ear squishing headphones are the worst. Any headphones that don't break easily are more worth it than high quality ones that are uncomfortable.

I think Sony played it smart. Making available both the XM4 and XM5 means you can decide on what suits you and which omissions in the new iteration bug you most.

Yeah, I guess that's how you do a proper follow up to an already perfect product. There is not much to improve upon in the M4s so Sony made M5s slightly different to give the same quality but give customers better options that suit their style more. Very clever on their part!

I don't think they did. It's released too soon after the XM4 and is only an incremental upgrade at best (and not even in every way, some ways it's even a small step back). I think Sony made a mistake and instead should have focused on bringing the best sound quality possible for an affordable price. The WF-1000XM3's still competes with the best wireless earbuds you can currently get for just a fraction of the price (you can get them for $100 or less as opposed to the other good ones being $250 or more). With the price these cost, I don't want to pick between comfort, stylish design, features and sound quality. I need it to excel in every single way.

The XM3 an XM4 are basically the same though (same chipset with a few new features like auto pause, and slightly different tuning). So realistically, even if you have the older XM3, you still don't need to upgrade.

Yeah, multipoint is not as useful if you plan on using LDAC. Noise cancelling is about the same as far as I could tell from reviewers between xm4 and xm3. I'd be curious to see if the XM5 is meaningfully better at noise cancellation.

I nearly bought the XM3s at a discount when the XM4s came out, but I'm glad I got the XM4s. They have better features, particularity pausing playback automatically when you take them off, which I use every single time I wear them.

Thank you for pointing out the fact that none of their Bluetooth Headphones work with the Bluetooth PS4 and or PS5. I honestly thought that I was the only one that thought that was stupid/intentional on Sony's part and it's different business units.

It’s because Sony also sells the headphones that are specifically made for the ps5. If they made these to work for PS5, no one would buy the other ones. Definitely smart and very intentional.

@@aarizshaikh8104 true! There is still the possibility to connect your headphones to the controller via audio-cable, which is what I've been doing for years. With the Surface Headphones you can still have ANC. Not truly wireless but nice nonetheless.

Bought my XM4 a couple of months ago and I love them so this upgrade won’t be for me. The big case is also kind of a dealbreaker - but I’m really happy with choosing Sony. Been listening to a lot more music with them too.

With Chris's headphone reviews, I adore how The Verge takes a slice-of-life, vlogging approach to shooting the video in the Big Apple. My favorite of this kind remains the Apple's headphone review with Chris tuning in to Taylor Swift's Evermore. I also appreciate the unabashed view of New York - jaded walls and pillars of the subway "paired" with the picturesque road walks and towering buildings outside. 🙂

I have the XM4000s, I love them, also got them for $200 with my employee discount 😜 seeing the new ones I feel no regrets on not waiting, I know the new ones work slightly better in most ways but mine still are world class and honestly I like the style of mine 1000 times more than the boxy bland look of the new ones, plus mine are foldable and packed in this carry case it's like half the size of the new one's case 😅

I connect my XM 4 to my Sony a80j oled to play on the ps5. I notice a slight lag in some instances but it's mostly fine for gaming. I'll wait to upgrade 😌

I have the XB900N noise-cancelling Extra Bass headphones, & I was considering upgrading to the XM4 model, but now with this new model that makes the decision for me a little more complicated lol. I’m leaning towards the XM4s bc of the fact that they fold in so they’re more space efficient in more bags & the midnight blue color makes me want to get them

I have the xm4’s and dont see a reason to upgrade. So its got a new design that actually makes them less portable and thats pretty much…it. And the xm4’s are still so good that sony is STILL selling them. Gonna keep mine until there’s a legit reason to switch. Could be years

I appreciate the honest review. XM4s are bass forward and I love it, compared to the QC45 I have. Im thinking the XM5s match and then beat Bose by offering crisp detail with more bass. Best quality Ive heard comes from the Airpods Max but the drawbacks to portability (case, battery) and price make it an easier to pass.

Upgraded from the 2015 model Sony MDR-ZX770BN. Definitely a big step up. Audio is still a bit meh, to be honest, so don't expect too much. Tuning with the equalizer does improve it quite a bit. Just remember they are travel headphones not audiophile.

I passed on upgrading from the XM3's to the XM4's because the only difference I cared about was the fact that the XM4's could connect to more than one bluetooth device. However, after a few of years of pairing every time I switched devices I decided to consider the XM5's once they were released. While I understand the points of those who will stay with the prior generations, there are enough changes for me to make the jump. Additionally, to my ears the XM5's were noticeably better in that mic comparison.

I'm owner of WH1000XM4 and XM5. Here's what I noticed the difference. 1. XM5's NC is better than XM4. 2. XM5 and XM4 both are comfortable. 3. Sound Quality on XM5 is slightly better than XM4. 4. The buttons itself no longer need to press hard on XM5. 5. If you didn't turn on NC while listening and then you turn off your XM5. The moment you turn on your XM5, it'll remember which settings you used before. No more default NC turned on everytime you turn on your XM5. 6. Incredible battery life. 7. Very lightweight than XM4.

Just picked these up and I've been loving them so far. Love having the transparency mode and USB-C which my Bose 35 iis lacked. Just replaced the cushions with ones from Wicked Cushions which are far more comfortable and higher quality.

I'm gonna get personal here. I bought the XM4 two years ago and I fell in love when I found out what was Hi Res. I even bought a NW-A105 walkman, and, when I'm sitting on my computer, I use a DAC PHA-1A. I never use my XM4 wireless (perhaps during a call or playing videogames). I use Deezer Hifi as streaming service. I really care about noise cancelling, but I care the most about sound quality. I don't see XM5 has improved in audio quality, so, for me, its not worthy to buy these, yet, if I got to use them, I would not miss the chance. Having said that, It would be very interesting if Sony would merge these NC technologies with some other ones related to audio quality, such as balanced audio (Those MDR-Z7MR2 or some other), among others. I would definitely consider to get broken so I could acquire these hypothetical headphones!

You nailed the explanation of the sound quality compared to the XM4s. I listen to a lot of hip hop and reggaeton, music with a lot of beats, and the 5's cannot match the 4s and 3s in that segment. I have to play around with the equalisers a lot to get near to that level. However, mids and highs sound clearer. Ultimately, I think I am gonna keep the 5s as I got them for a really good price

I wait so long for the m5 I have the 1st Gen x1000 and now I decided to upgrade from them since the left side make some weird noises right now, most likely because it falled and I sat on it many times otherwise I guess it will be okay, I am so excited to this version and hope it works better with ANC inside the helicopter since that's the #1 reason for me to buy these headset

Still rocking Bose QC25 and Sony XM3 till these days, they still hold up strong. Companies making a “traveling” headphone less and less portable each version is just pure stupidity.

Got xm3s but "upgraded" to the earphone xm4s. I also use it as a sleep earbuds so win-win. But earphones just have better passive NC than headphones. Bought my xm3s when they came out. And once earmuffs starts to deform, it lets in more sound. So i changed to earphones.

I got the xm5. Don’t worry about the sound in my opinion. It is good. The bass is fine don’t stress that either. The ANC is stellar but it sometimes changes when you don’t want it. Don’t worry too much. The fit was really comfortable for many but not for me. I’m not sure why. I have big ears and a round chin and it hurt abit after awhile. Get them from a retailer you can do returns and try them for a week

I own the XM2's and have no issues, I find the noise cancelling fine for me. I really don't see why the XM5's don't fold, either there trying to stay with other company trends or it's cheaper to manufacture non folding headphones, after all it's a business and at the end of the day, it's all about the money. Xm5 and Max sounded best to me. Bose 700 always get high marks but sound muffled to me. I have the XM4 and despite zero reason to get the XM5, as you put it, I have order a pair. A little fun never hurt anyone.

I'm glad the xm5 headphones can't fold. That is one reason why I'd like to purchase them. The xm4 headphones felt so cheap and the earcups could swivel around so much, I was afraid of accidentally breaking them. If I had just gotten another case, I would have kept my sony xm4 headphones instead of returning them to amazon. However, I might pick up a set of these during Black Friday, or maybe grab them from Ebay. I have found some pretty good deals from there. I like that the sony headphone app is accessible with voiceover, the apple built in screen reader. The different EQ settings are also very nice. Thanks for a good review. I'm also glad that call quality has improved. That is also one reason why I got the bose nc700 headphones. I know things like audio dramas, or described movies from Disney+ would sound great on the new Sony headphones.

Used XM4's 2 years. Gave them to my family, bought XM5's returned them after 2 days because of volume adjustment lagging and auto NC optimizer. Bought another XM4's. Best headphones ever! They just work

There’s no point having the best sounding headphones if they are uncomfortable to wear. Comfort over design (always).

I think what was meant is "comfort over appearance". Design includes everything, not just looks.

I think Sony finally came out on top for once in the microphone category this year. They've always lacked here but the quality is unmatched this year, especially in windy conditions it blocks out noise basically 100% its crazy good.

we have to admit that Mic on Sony xm5 is the best among other options tested here, but I guess you should test them at street, but not only in quiet room...

I just hope the earcups are deeper than XM4. Bcs my ears were in constant pain from the xm4

Im using my XM3s they aint perfect but they are nice to have, I got them free with my phone, im not the guy who is gonna pay over £200 for headphones, I typically use Roland RH300 for my NW A35 walkman as i like my sound to be specific, not tailored and usually i can get them cheap.

Great video as always from you guys however, Not fair comparing these new ones to the xm4's that are burned in. Unless the xm4's used in this comparison are brand new as well.
