Sony has announced the new FE 14mm f/1.8 G Master ultra wide angle lens. I've had the chance to shoot with this lens over the last 2 weeks - my first impressions? This lens is absolutely fabulous. Incredibly sharp, almost no distortion, incredible contrast and it even has bokeh when you have your subject close. This is the new standard in ultra-wide angle prime lenses.

We aren’t even one third into the year and Sony has released the Alpha One, the GM 35mm F1.4, the GM 50mm F1.2 and know the GM 14mm F1.8. At the moment they are absolutely killing it!

Nice quick review....looking forward to your more in-depth review. I own the 12-24 F2.8 GM and absolutely love the lens...it is Sharp...Sharp...Sharp...just as Sharp as my 24 F1.4 GM, in fact I rarely use it much anymore...as I love the wide angle views of the 12-24. Having said that...it is a heavy lens...and was wanting a wide angle lens that was smaller and lighter so I can do more hiking in the High Sierras and still take quality wide angle landscape pics...this lens seems very tempting and will fill that want...but LOL...your comment about Sony costing us $ everytime they come out with a new GM lens is painfully true! Will have to think about it. By the way, love your channel...you are the only one I can think of that makes videos that really talk about all facets of photography including your interviewing and talking about the great photographers of years past...It is really important that you do these videos and preserve and recognize the craft of past photographers...so want to thank you very much for the time, effort and cost it takes to do your videos...it is much appreciated!

The sony 12-24mm was too wide for me. I found myself always at 24mm looking back at file data. This 14mm looks promising because of the lack of obvious distortion. At 12mm I felt like sometimes I had to be careful of my feet because they'd be in frame. Edit: I'm hoping they make a version 2 of the 16-35 with faster aperture... that'd be epic if it were F/2.

i just bought this lens sony 14mm. I noticed a sound when you press shutter button on aperture above 1.8. At 1.8 it is silent and when you choose, for example 4.0, and press shutter button i hear this "chik chik" sound while focusing. Is it normal?

Thanks it's a stonking optic. Been on my wishlist for about a year now and just ordered mine. Looking forward to using for landscape astro, especially with 'Milky Way' season approaching. Also can't wait to use for creative architecture interpretation and looking forward to experimenting with unflattering but creative portraits. It's not an everyday usability lens but I have others for that, but it looks small and light enough to warrant packing for 'just in case' use use too. When time, weight and packing space permit I much prefer shooting primes but everyday practicality figure hugely in my lens choices, so my GM 16-35 will almost always get selected first. However if/when I can get a 24-70 GM mkii then my 16-35GM might just stay home if I can take my 20mm f1.8G or my 24mm f1.4GM alongside my new 14mm GMf1.8 out to play. I'm fortunate that I can just about afford to keep up with Sony's hectic new 'wow' products release schedule - but it sure is expensive. Not that I expect any sympathy with that nice to have dilemma. I do sometimes think though that indulgence in GAS really does little to make any of us better photographers. That said this optic looks unparalleled when accounting for IQ, aperture speed, size and weight. With this I will no longer feel any need to even consider buying a 12-24mm. I had previously rejected both the G and GM option in 12-24 as being less useful in real world use cases, for me, vs the more versatile 16-35 f2.8GM.

Hi Ted, I've been a follower for the last months, and I've always enjoyed your videos. I have a question, do you ever focus on the printing process? as in DIY home-printing. The reason I am asking is because I would like to go that direction. But there are many variables, such as printers, cartridges, ink quality, paper quality and types, and associated costs. Would love to see a video of yours about this topic. Cheers!

As someone who owns and loves the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 I would say that calling it a little front heavy is ... kind. It was quite front heavy on my Canon 5D Mark 3 with a battery grip. Strapping on an MC-11 and sticking onto a Sony a7RIV it feels like it is going to do some damage :) Am very much looking forward to the Sony version, now I just need someone who wants to buy a Sigma with a scrape on the front element :)

I agree that modern technologies have made APS-C camera almost as capable as full framers. However, there is one area where full frame cameras still hold it’s ground, i.e., when you want a sharp image with natural shallow depth of field on a wide angle lens. This might not be a concern for anyone. But for my own self, I still enjoy that old school smooth transition from blurred elements to the sharp objects in a photo very much. Thus, I will choose full frame over APS-C

@bananabear009 3 года назад
@@martinz.8538 That's why I said I am old school. I still enjoy that subtle difference that full framers provide. A good 50mm would give you human perspective with nice depth of field, which I still enjoy alot. No matter how, it's all up to personal preference.
@martinz.8538
@martinz.8538 3 года назад
@@bananabear009 It can be understood that it is not possible with APS-C, but it is like 99% possible. You can use Fuji for wedding with 16mm, 23mm, 35mm f1.4 or 50mm f1.0 all with very soft Bokeh and the very compact f2.0 "Fujicrons" for travel with "enough" Bokeh.
