Heading to Japan in March and would love this lens for something like that. covers almost the same range as my tamron 17-28 and 28-75 in one lens. meaning i'd probably just bring one prime lens for the super wide open look. tempting.
I think I am buying it. Want a light weight lens because the Tamron 35-150mm while o don’t mind the weight it’s a large lens! They were smart with the price of it!
I went from a 4 prime kit to the 20-70/4 and a 85/1.8 Batis. I think I am happy. I don't really use big apertures at 20mm anyway so F4 is plenty -- in fact I shoot 20mm at 5.6 or 8. I don't really care than the 70mm end is only F4 because if I am shooting a portrait I'll put on an 85 that is way faster than 2.8.
Great. I have recently acquired the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G lens. However, one thing is bothering me or rather I would like to clarify whether it is a general issue with this lens or whether it is a defect specifically with my lens. The lens makes a noise when focussing (with autofocus). By the way, the volume of the noise varies depending on the aperture setting. At f/4 the noise is very minimal, almost inaudible. From f/4.5, however, it is clearly audible. And the higher the aperture number (for example f/13), the longer it takes to focus and the longer the noise lasts. However, these differences are small. I am not yet familiar with focusing noises from lenses recently released by Sony. For example, the new Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G and the new Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS II are 100% completely silent. The older Sony FE 18mm f/1.8 G, on the other hand, also makes the noise described above, if I remember correctly. Does your lens also make this noise? Many thanks in advance!
@@SebastianWorldwide I don't hear any notable noise on mine when using it in a normal fashion. If you put your ear aganist the body of the lens you can hear the aperture actuators working whilst the lens open the shutters to focus then close them back down for to capture the depth of field for the EVF. But you can;t hear it with your eye on the finder and your ears to the wind.
Sony 100-400 creeps like hell when walking with the lens pointing down even when the zoom is set to the stiffest setting. I wish Sony built the zoom lock button on 100-400.
Great overview and review. I've been looking into certain lenses to try and cover a broad range. I've come across this lens used quite a few times, and now i know where it would fit within my toolkit. Also 0:17 - 0:28 was gold. Has a content creator myself I always worry about making mistakes and find myself going back to record certain segments of the videos I make but seeing this has given me that little confidence to not take myself so seriously when doing reviews😂.
Hi Peter, great review. Your review say to me to get the lens. Your samples are very telling. This thing is really sharp. I am mostly a landscape stills guy with occasional video work. Between Tamron and Sony, we have too many choices!!
The only thing i know about Sweden is that it's cold there and i know great football player Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Peter Lindgren and because of you guys now i love Sweden despite of that i have never been there and now i wish to visit this beautiful country 😊
Great review Pete! Recently I have been rocking the 24-70 GM mk2 and I can tell, that I wish it to be 20-70 haha :). By the way. Do you shoot your vlog-style footage in S-Cinetone or do you shoot everything S-Log3?
By the way, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-75mm f/2.8 lens, which is actually Tamron's patent, does not reach a state where it crawls, which is quite fun, probably only in the Sony version
Should have been a g master replacement for 24 to 70 and went to f2.8. Still a great lens and the size is really nice. Don't think I'll be buying one though.
Yeah but he meant with 20-70 f2.8 but that would probably be twice the size, weight and price so I’m happy with this one as a mostly landscape photographer

I currently own the Sony 16-35mm f2.8 and the Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 lenses, but I feel that I am lacking an "all-around" lens. I believe that a 20-70mm lens would be a suitable addition to my collection.
@@FlareWalk These lenses are amazing for my contracts, but when I just want to hang out with friends and take casual photos, I often hesitate and end up not bringing my camera with me because they are too bulky.
I currently have two lenses both prime. 35mm f1.4 gm 85mm f1.4 sigma I'm travelling South America for 3 months and wondering if I can get by with just this lens on my a7 iv :P
I find it the ideal all-round lens for me and hope, the price will fall fast. In Germany it's about 1600€, that's really not acceptable, but my 24-105 was also 1400€ in the beginning, now you can get it for under 800€. When it drops under 1100€, it will replace my 24-105, that ist for sure!
@@DanCarr Yes, the 20-70mm f4 is the first of these focal lengths being made which is quite amazing. 24-105mm was more expensive on release I think? 20mm is 4mm wide than 24mm which is harder to make as the 24-105mm lens formula has been around for years. My own last question before buying this lens would be how well is the camera correction for the expected distorted 20mm (as not in any preview/review yet) as I do shoot straight line shots (The 24-70mm GM2 being a GM has a lesser of this problem, of course, 4mm longer)?
@@benldr I think it’s a good price but you have to factor in the weight. The Sigma 24-70 F2.8 DG DN Art is 835g which is 70% heavier than this lens… for that weight if I want to get a 24-70 F2.8 lens I would spend more for the Sony GM II, at least it’s slightly lighter. For this size and weight, and the range 20-70mm, I think this lens is actually really good at the price range (~$1,100) - at least I am not in Europe and the price here is around $1,070.
Hey Peter. Thanks for the review. To be honest I have some mixed emotions about this lens. I think its a great focal range, but I'm gonna assume its wont be cheap. So if you already own the 20mm f1.8, there might be a better option to fill that gap. I still wouldn't mind having this lens though lol...
I know .. I primarily photograph properties and products, and often need to use aperture settings wider than f/4 .. A compact lens would be beneficial for use with a gimbal as it would be easier to handle and maneuver :)
I am eyeing on 16-35 f4 PZ G. and currently own Sigma 24-70 f2.8. I donno I will ever replace my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 or not bcos that lens is very sharp. I also don't think I can live with f4 for low light. I need at least a f2.8 for night shoot as am not using a7sIII. I got Sony 24mm F1.4 GM for low light and B-roll lens which is irreplaceable as well. not even Sony 20mm G lens. Think I will have a hard pass for this lens.
Hello Peter, Great and informative video, please I would really appreciate it if you read my comment and reply. I do cooking videos and I would like to find Sony camera lens that is able to take 4k image to a cooking pan from about a meter away to avoid the heat and the splashing oil but at the same time to be able to zoom very close to get a micro image to the ingredients. I would really appreciate your help.
I sold my 24-105 when I got the 20-70. I love the extra wide angle of the 20mm vs 24mm. Plus it is lighter, smaller, sharper and focuses faster than the 24-105. I use it on my A7CR which makes it a great travel combo.
Hi Mr. Lindgren: no oss not internal zoom F4 already exists 24-105 heavier but still there and for internal zoom 16-35 for gimbals maybe for the weight but im not sure this is a good deal thanks for the video
Thank you for your review. My opinion about this lens is.... naaaah. There is 24-70 F4 OSS and 16-35 F4 OSS. Is the 4mm worth the difference in the price? The retail price for 20-70 is 1099usd, but the real price (at this moment) is 1800 usd... the 24-70 f4 is 680 USD here in Poland.
24-70 f4 Z is the worst lens in the E-Mount FF series (it was a rush job for the first gen A7/R users). Cannot really compare it to the 24105G and the new 2070G (much better AF and IQ, yes a bit on release price). The current 24105G has dropped a lot in USED market at least.
@@wingcreator I’m using Zeiss 24-70 f4 oss and it’s very good lens. Ultra sharp, great colors, quiet focus and with very fast AF. Really no reason to complain.
I find these reviews have a conflict of interest aspect. If you don't push out a favorable review, the manufacturer won't send you an early copy for review before release. If not, content creator won't have products available to create on and be further relegated to the back of the line, thus missing out on views, clicks and ultimately money. Therefore, even though many say that they are not being paid, either directly or indirectly through provisions of trips and accommodations, they are essentially being somewhat forced into a role to be as equivalent to being paid and being a spokesperson for the product.
I don't think any reviewers are pay to say good things about products. Those who do (if are stupid enough) will not survive on RU-vid / FB or IG. Nowadays, many consumers are not fools! If you don't believe them, rent or buy and test for yourself!
@@wingcreator It's the exact opposite 🤣. Consumers are more and more stupid, most of them buy impulsively, attracted by aggressive online advertising and by their own desire to spend their hard-earned money for the sake of the idea of being fashionable and that a last-generation product is far better than something from the old generation. After all, this is modern commerce: smart producers and stupid consumers 🤣
Sony produced 2 useless and expensive lenses (Sony 16-35 F4 PZ and 20-70 F4) that will be bought by less intelligent and influential consumers. Good luck with your shopping 👍😜
I dunno this lens is kind of an oof, great focal range but that’s kind of where the good points end when taking the price into account. For 1100 you get f4 (aka higher ISO) a heavy vignette on the wide end, no oss. For 100 more you get 24-105 with oss. I dunno this is one of those great lenses for folks who need precisely 20-70 at f4. I’d argue that the 16-35 F4 PZ lens is a better buy. Or heck get the old 16-35 f4 oss for 100 bucks less.
@@PeterLindgren1 thanks for the quick reply. Yes my Sigma 24-70 is f/2.8. I bough a 20mm f/1.x Sony native lens for a special project, and sometimes use it in dark locations because of the wider aperture. Sony wont work with my Cannon flash, and I don't think I will reward them by buying their flash. I'm shooting in dark bars without flash, maybe ISO 12800, and at f/2.8. This 20-70 f/4 should be good for vloggers who work outdoors in daylight and inside with lights.
