I'm literally sitting here debating upgrading the 1.8 to the Gmaster and the focus breathing seems scary. I 99% shoot video. Thanks for this video

I actually just sold the G-Master. I thought I would sell the f/1.8 after buying the G-Master, but for video... the f/1.8 just makes more sense

I think the 1.8 might be the best lens for video, price to performance, Sony has ever made. The 35mm focal length is my sweet spot. Never once have I shot a video and felt f/1.8 wasn't "getting it there" for me. That lack of focus breathing is amazing for a lens at that price. I do wish it had the build quality of the GM and then it would indeed be my perfect lens for video. Combine the 35 with the 55 1.8 and the 85 1.8 and, at least for me, covers anything that I shoot and am paid for. Great video Philip!

It really is a great lens. I agree about the 1.8. On full frame sensors, you don't really need to get more shallow than that for video. Maybe I'll sell the GM and keep the 1.8...? Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for a great comparison, Philip. For what it is worth: As a viewer, I would have appreciated, if you let the test shots show for a little bit longer and commented more on each shot. More than once I felt like, I was just about to get a closer look, but then you were on to something else. Of course, I do not know if other viewers felt like me, but now you know what at least one viewer felt. And yes, I subscribed.

Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. And thanks for the sub, too. Did you decide on one of these lenses?

@@PhillipRPeck As I am filming political commentary videos, I have been very interested in the 35 mm 1.4 for getting the sharpest possible image. However, I bought the A7IV with the 28-70 kit lens and it is surprisingly sharp when zoomed to 35 mm and used in my studio environment where I have good lighting conditions. So for now, I think I will make a couple of RU-vid videos with my new camera and the 28-70 lens before deciding.

What about continuous autofocus for video? Which lens perform better? BTW, great video, very helpful. Thanks.

Lol, I guess I should have done that test but both these lenses are amazing in terms of continuous video AF, I don't think you could go wrong with either one in that regard

Great job, by the looks of it I like the look of the 1.8 better because it's not as share and has a softer warmer feel.

In your experience would you say there's minimal difference in image quality between say a sonnar fe 35mm and say a g 16-55 zoom at. approx 35mm focal length given controlled lighting indoor for a video? I'm shooting with fx30 (active stab, focus breathing comp) crop crop.. and I'm using mostly FE lenses vs E (crop crop) intentionally and I'm wondering if I need to consider a 35mm prime for any reason other than compact footprint. I shoot mostly with 24-105 f4 or the previously mentioned 16-55 2.8 indoor controlled lighting. I can see that outdoor and low light gives 1.8 35mm greater utility in concept and practical use so I'm seeking any insights you may have to offer a beginner ? Thx

I would say probably, yes, the differences in IQ would be pretty minimal and if you're fine using f/2.8 and f/4 zooms, then you're not really missing much (images at the same aperture on a prime would be largely indistinguishable from the zoom lens). Much of the differences or compromises that a zoom lens is making are corrected in camera or in post--like barrel or pincushion distortion and vignetting. Aside from minor IQ advantages with a prime, their advantages are compactness, they're faster (let in more light), and can produce shallower depth of field given the same framing (due to faster aperture). Unless there's something specific that you cannot do or that you're unhappy about with your current lenses, there's not going to be a significant quality improvement by going with a prime.

Not all Sony FE 1.8 lenses are good. But 35mm or 85mm are among the better ones. Anyone who takes professional photographs will certainly reach for 1.4. Where there are static video shots, the GM FE 1.4 also wins, but for more dynamic video shots, the FE 1.8 can be even better. As for focus breathing, the new firmware that compensates for it solves quite successfully. On the other hand, I turn off focus breathing when I use new zoom lenses. Sometimes it causes problems - for example, when I zoom and pan or tilt at the same time. But this is not general and varies by type of the lens. GM 35 is the beast :-)

The 20mm gets nothing but rave reviews also , thinking about buying this 35 and 20 , as I have a zoom lens but would be great to have the 20mm too because I can chuck that on my fx30 for a 30mm ff equivalent and have it for a wide lens on my fx3 sometimes
@Zdenek_Houdek
@Zdenek_Houdek 2 месяца назад
@@Tonellacam I have an FX30 and I gradually started buying 1.4 lenses because of the aperture. If you own an FX3, you have a lot more freedom when it comes to darkness. I have to multiply the lenses by 1.5. This is not a problem for me because I have enough lenses. My problem is carrying those lenses.
@Tonellacam

@@Zdenek_Houdek yeah I most use my 16/55 on my fx30 which is a 24-70 equivalent , and I also have a 24-70 gmi that I use on my fx3 , I run 2 cameras at once sometimes so I like that length , I just want a couple prime lenses next like the 20 and 35
