The review isn’t from a professional standpoint, as much of what he said makes no sense. But what I can tell is that the Nikon comes out on top in IQ but loses out in size/weight.

I also compared the Nikon 50mm f1.2 and the Sony 50mm f1.2 GM on the Z8 and Sony A7rV. In my opinion the Nikon lens is much too large and heavy for what it does. Also af is way slower than the one of the Sony GM lens. Optically I think the differences are not really significant. Since I shoot both Sony and Nikon I'll use the Sony GM lens until Nikon releases a second, improved version of the 50mm f1.2 S lens. BTW the Sony GM lens can be used on a Nikon Z camera as well using the Megadap ETZ21 adapter.

I agree with you!

Did you use eye af with the Nikon? And if so was it more reliable with the 50 1.2?
@FramesTM
@FramesTM Год назад
I always use eye af. The 1.2 is WAYYY faster and accurate compared to the 1.8. No comparison
@devilangel4655
@devilangel4655 Год назад
The on 1.2 are both really close, it’s like timing, moment, light. The only thing for the 50mm Nikon Z, is big, bulky, and a necessary display one the lens, keeps the cost also higher and vulnerable.
@FramesTM
@FramesTM Год назад
True. Don’t want the 85mm to be like that

Good job! You have a special gift for turning a technical explanation into something like story telling, which makes it easy and interesting to watch. Not that the viewer is biting his nails, waiting to learn who killed who, but is taken on a marvellous journey through a photographic experience. 👍😁

I have the Nikkor and I've owned the GM in the past when I was shooting with Sony. I'm honestly a bit disappointed with the Nikon lens. The Sony was sharper, much lighter, much smaller, and my copy handled chromatic aberration much better than my Nikkor does. The Sony did breathe significantly more, but in exchange for a slight crop, focus breathing compensation handles the effect far better than Nikon's purely optical mitigation... So kind of a wash there IMO.
@FramesTM

Thanks for your honest opinion… I have seen copies where the Sony accurately does better

I wonder if most buyers of the Nikon 50mm f1.2 Z lens use it on a tripod for video shoots or for studio portraiture and then the weight of the lens is no longer a factor. For general walking around photography, the Nikon 50mm f1.8 Z lens might be a better choice. Use case makes all the difference.
@FramesTM
@FramesTM Год назад
Hmmm. But you can walk around with the Sony a bit more easily. Plus I like shorter lenses. But it's a joy to work with the Nikon files. I never really enjoy the Sony files that much
@marvinphillips912
@marvinphillips912 Год назад
@@FramesTM So maybe the Sony is preferred if handheld while the Nikon is preferred if on a tripod.
@FramesTM
@FramesTM Год назад
Yes. But I would just use something like a Z7II or the Z9 or the future Z8 and adapt the Sony lens onto these bodies! Dream
@marvinphillips912

@@FramesTM On another note, have you found that Nikon camera-based vibration reduction can work as well at f1.2 for critical sharpness as compared to using a tripod?
@FramesTM
@FramesTM Год назад
Oh did you check her pictures at the end of the video? They were taken inside a ‘tuktuk’ (google it). Those little vehicles have no suspension. So it was jumpy and how! All the photos came in SHARP! So yes the in camera vibration reduction on Z6II works flawlessly!

Technically Nikon is better but it gets harder to choose when you consider weight and size advantage of Sony. Although Im' not going to get any of these lenses. I don't know whether you have used Nikon 180mm f2.8 ED or not but I want you to have a look on that lens and if possible make a review. You will be surprised by that lens.

No the Nikon is not "better". For example the 50mm f1.2 GM also focuses much faster and more silently. I compared them side by side. Optically I think the differences are not really significant. What's significant is the bigger size and weight of the Nikon.

Despite its technical and image prowess, the Nikon is just too big and unwieldy for me. I prefer the Sony 50 1.2. I currently have the 50 1.8S for my Z6II & Z7, and I love it.

At the end of the day if you have a Nikon camera you would buy a Nikon lens and if you have a Sony camera you would buy the Sony lens, if you have both cameras then you have a dilemma or buy both.
@FramesTM
@FramesTM 10 месяцев назад
Yes. Because of the size, I would buy the Sony. Although the Nikon has a kind of beauty that’s difficult to express. I have both.

@nat-lj8kt
@nat-lj8kt Год назад
Sony cheaper, smaller, lighter and to me seems slightly sharper (your CA shots at 300%, Nikon's CA is masked by spherical aberration I think where as Sony has less spherical but a bit more color fringe). Nikon has a bit more character and less vignetting which should be given the size.
@FramesTM
@FramesTM Год назад
Spherical aberration leads to loss of sharpness when wide open. But then the Nikon has tremendous sharpness wide open.
@nat-lj8kt
@nat-lj8kt Год назад
@@FramesTM not sure how modern lenses pull it off but they have some spherical aberration at the focus transition zone which doesnt affect perceived sharpness. They are both brilliant lenses. Over correction of spherical aberration and you end up with very harsh but also clinical bokeh.
