The 55mm is still my first love, and the weight of the f1.2 was a burden for long events, but great for short controlled shoots. so thank you sony for making a lighter version at 1.4 of the 50GM.

With 50mm being one of the most go-to prime focal distances, having two modern versions at different price tiers in the Sony line makes sense. Surprised they didn't make this a G instead of GM though. I definitely see it as a direct competition move to the new Sigma 50mm and to snag those buyers who just couldn't go to $2K for the f/1.2. I am definitely curious to see what they do with the beta-tested 85/1.2 (whether they feel it is worthy for GM or, if theoretical limits with the E mount make 1.2 a challenge). If they haven't got it figured out, do they launch an updated 85/1.4 now to pair with the 50/1.4 and keep trying to make 85/1.2 work?

Love how small and fast Sony's GM lenses are, and love using them on my A7C, but the lack of Focus Breathing Compensation for that camera absolutely ruins the experience for video... Why would I use a big lens that has no focus breathing on a hyper-compact camera body? If any of Sony's cameras need FBC, the A7C does! Keep telling 'em Manny, maybe one day they'll listen.

@@Pavorish a big chunk of Canon's market share is in entry level gear where third-party lens options (or L glass, for that matter) isn't on the forefront of the buyer's mind. As a Canon guy I'm not happy about the move, but I also think even with the third-party options for EF glass, Sony has long been a more lucrative choice given the expansive selection of native and third-party glass at very affordable prices. Canon may lose some market share from this move, but likely not enough to cause panic.
@dannyjeffers
@dannyjeffers Год назад
Canon clearly isn’t interested in giving everyone everything they want like Sony is. They make a product with a pretty specific philosophy and by not allow third party they’re distilling that philosophy down into something a little more pure, not unlike Leica’s approach. I absolutely loved my a74 and z9 but there is a cohesiveness to the Canon experience that brought me back. Everything from feel/handling, color, af, 2nd to none reliability. Trust me I also wish I could shoot that 35-150 2.8 but I also understand that Canon is refining their brand with the move to not allow it.

7:02 if size & weight, & cost (because the 50mm, f1.2, is $2000), is not your top priority option for the f1.2. The 50 f1.2 costs 40% more than Sony’s 50mm, f1.4, GM and bokeh results not withstanding I don’t think it’s 40% better. I like the Sony, 50mm, f1.4, GM because in clinical tests, lenstips shows it’s the sharpest thing they have ever tested, (sharper than Sony’s, 50mm, f1.2). I’m likely going to be using the aperture that will give optimal center and across the frame sharpness for this lens, f2.8, and only go to f1.4 for portraits or night time/indoor shots. Still, sharpness isn’t everything. The bokeh is still wonderful for portraits, and I’ve seen it has excellent contrast from other videos.
