Thank you for this awesome video! Just got my hands on a new a6000 with 16-50mm but I don't think it's that great. Going to pick up the 50mm oss after watching this vid.
Ola, the A6000 will just about do it all! We have taken some incredible photos of mushrooms, stalks of grain, dog faces, etc.,with the 16-50mm. Add the Sony E 35 f1.8 w OSS and the Sony E 50 OSS and you're basically THERE,for pics or video. Also, the other kit lens that shows up with the A6000,cant recall what it is at the moment, but Jason reviewed it,too. Jason is a huge help,a force of nature!
First lens still my favorite lens! I just picked it back up aft 2 years and slapped it on a7c that's why I'm here to see if I can get away with it on FE. Kus it looks Better than the 85 mm I have plus OSS.
Really great and helpful video. I have to admit when I got my Sony 50mm OSS, I didn't really like it. I was pretty disappointed with the crop factor. BUT, after watching this video and updating it's firmware it's not hated as much anymore. Just FYI ( and I think you illustrate this in the video) But I got 2768x1848 in APSC crop mode and 4240x2832 in the clear image zoom at a 1.2 crop which got past the vignette issues. thanks again Jason!
I’m sitting here with a zeiss 55 1.8, zeiss 50 1.4 classic zf.2, Zeiss 50mm macro f2 zf.2 (accidentally won 2 bids on eBay), Nikon 50mm 1.8 manual lens, and an Olympus 50mm 1.8 OM. I have no idea why I’m watching this, I don’t even want to think about another 50mm lol. Thanks for the entertainment though.
I have a really stupid question. This is old so you may not answer you may not answer anyway but..... If a 50mm lens is MADE for a APS-C sensor why is it not 50mm why do you have to take the crop into account? It is 50mm for a APS-C so why is it not 50mm? Everyone I watch says take the crop into account but its 50mm made for a APS-C should be 50mm it's confusing. If you use a full frame lens taking the crop into account makes sense.
bro i was using 50mm FE on my a6400 which doesn't have OSS in it on ronin sc I got horrible shaky results....my every footstep shake whole camera....is it normal????.... should I get an oss lens now?
@@tanmaykamatkar8346 its better than FE but if your are planning to upgrade to a full frame then buying the FE is a smart decision. Any ways the difference in stabilization isn't that huge in my opinion in both the lens.
Great video. I've had the 50 FE for years. Now that I have the A7C I'm tempted to pick up a 50 OSS just to see how well the stabilization does with this camera.
What I have noticed sony isn't like canon where the OSS works with the IBIS. Sony chooses one and not both. So having the 50mm FE would be almost same and using the 50mm OSS will just make it a 75mm lens with the crop that you will have to use.
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema I can confirm this having own an A7C and not felt a noticeable difference when I mistakenly bought the 50mm OSS lens. I returned it and am going to get an FE one for my bag
The best comparison of these two lenses! I have watched many. I have the e OSS that I purchased for my Sony a6100 and now I have purchased the A7Riii, I was thinking about buying the FE version, but looks like I can use the e OSS just fine. I also learned that I still get 18 mega pixels in APSC mode. At least, I am not in a hurry to buy a new portrait lens. I already have the Tamron 28-200mm as "everything" lens.
I have the OSS SEL50F18, and it is my favorite lense to use with my NEX7. Great for pictures and video. Especially because my camera is old, and it doesn't have in-body OSI.
At 7:24 - see that shiftiness? I hate that. That really bugs me and makes shots looks really unprofessional and not smooth. I think the solution is to turn OFF OSS and just use stabilization in post with software. That also has its drawbacks and limitations. How do you guys deal with this? Also, I have read and experienced a type of "pumping" effect when AF-C is on. It happens on static images, like walls and such. I'll update later. Edit: That pumping is actually FOCUS BREATHING. The only true solution is to shoot with manual focus or just edit that out and try to keep away from non textured surfaces or surfaces with too many depth changes.
I also turn stabilization (OSS) "off" for videos where I move around and use catalyst browse to stabelise it afterwards. OSS is only good for fotos with longer exposure and videos where you stand still.
@@VR_Wizard Thanks for mentioning this. You're right. OSS is great when you're standing still. It works great for taking pictures, but yes, turn it off for anything else and stabilize in post.
@@matrixate I also heard it is good in combination with a gimble but I haven't tested this and it probably depends on the gimble and the kind of gimble movements as well. Would be nice to see a conclusive test where OSS is realy needed and where it harms more then it helps, because lenses with it ar often more expensive and everyone wants to know what you get for the money. At least that's what I currently think about when deciding between the 50mm 1.8 fe or 50mm 1.8 OSS for my ZVe10
Hey 👋🏾 Jason I’m a new beginner still learning how to use my new $300 Sony NEX 7 that came with the Sony 18-55mm Kit lens I am curious to know if the 50MMFE @ 11:39 will be fully compatible with my Sony NEX7? Because I’m not. Photographer I just want something decent but a better lens for video
thanks Jason. I was looking for more info on using the lens for video - but it was still informative. Love the sidedoor interruption - that was clever :)
Are you sure that Sony IBIS does not work with OSS?? Others on the web seem to disagree - for example- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NmWhTAMGIMs.html I'd love to know since I do try to purchase OSS lenses (for my FX 30) since I do not like to have to use gimbals if possible...
Well good explained.i'm new in full frame. And i wanted a lens. 50mm. just wanted to know the difference when you buy it. What should it write on top of them? FE on full frame i suppose ? Thx
Great review man! I like the thoroughness and depth. I noticed it seems you rotoed yourself out when you did your little cameo screen right to invite people to subscribe. The edges jittered a bit so it looks like you rotoscoped yourself out. Am I right? Another easier technique is to do a split screen comp. Since the camera is locked, just shoot your second element and composite along the floor lamp in the bg. The dark wall is a perfect place to have a blended edge seam.
Man, i am trying to shoot a course with a direct shot like ou have on a desk. How far is your desk from the camera and what lens do you have? The 50mm?
I've planned to buy 50mm for photo as well as video use. but which one is most worthwhile for photos and videos. I really like OSS version but I prefer the "outer material" in FE
pls help me guys... does 50mm apsc also mean in 75mm practice ? ie if I buy a full frame lens & an apsc with the same focal length would they both have the same crop factor on apsc??
I liked how you went into photography theory for beginners I learned more than just about the lenses. Thank you for that and liked and subbed because of it.
Are both 50mm f1.8 OSS and 50mm f1.8 FE good for the Sony alpha a5100?? Because the FE is much cheaper than OSS I want to buy the FE but is this one good enough for portrets on the alpha 5100?
is there a multiplication factor for aperture as focal length when using a full frame lens on apsc sensor. Some forums are insisting that there is a x factor for aperture too " IS THAT TRUE "
Do you ever answer? If I have a E50mm F1.8 and have my camera a5100 set to movie. Will I get the blur background or is there a setting I have to change in the camera ??
Great Video Jason!! I had the Sony 50mm OSS and used it until I used my friend's Sigma 56. I have found myself looking for a compact lens. Which one would you recommend - Samyang 35 f2.8 or the Sigma 30 f2.8? I already have the Sigma 30 f1.4. I find it is a little bit too big on the A6400 body.
So after you tried your friend's Sigma 56mm you no longer like the Sony 50mm OSS? I have an A6000 & 6500; currently in the market for either the Sony 50mm OSS or the Sigma 56mm. Just want to hear your view on it?
I have the A6500 and i love the 50mm OSS, I'm buying now the 50mm FE just to use it as a 75mm... hope it delivers. Thanks so much fot your videos, have been pretty helpful.
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Thanks for the recomendation as well as for the answer; you are very polite and helpful. I'll try to sell the 50mm FE and buy the 85mm instead, with your reference, i've seen pretty good reviews of that lense. Again, thank you very much.
Your 50mm OSS is also 75mm in full frame terms. In short, 50mm OSS apsc lens & FE 50mm full frame lens will give exactly the same field of view & dof on apsc sensor camera.
@@HOTSHOTGAMING-eb3ds 50 mm is 50 mm. The APS-C version (the one with OSS) just doesn't cover full frame sensor. One will not see any difference reg. view angle between E/FE 50 mm lenses. Particularly on the APS-C body there will be no difference. On full frame body E version will not cover the entire frame.
I have a APS-C camera Sony A6100, which does not have image stabilization on body. I have two choices I am considering: should I buy - a F1.8 OSS lens OR - a F1.4 FE lens? I mean, will the better F-level compensate the missing OSS?
To shoot in low light get 1.4 if u doing only photography and for videos and photography get oss since it would be more stable 1.8 also will do good in low light
