Thank you for the video. This is my first "DSLR" camera and I found your video very educational. I was looking for the basics and you nailed them and then you shared advanced setting as well. I think your video moved along nicely, hit the points effectively, and I appreciate you separating the basics from the advanced how you did.
i know this video isn't too recent, but i just wanted to say a few things. this is probably the most helpful youtube video i've watched in a very long time, and answered all of the questions that i couldn't find the answers to myself. also, do you know of a way to enable a visual "level" graphic as one of the camera's display options? an a6400 guide video showed that, although it's available within that camera's settings, it doesn't appear to be available on this camera specifically.
Maartin! Thank you very much for making this video. I just recently got this camera to take my youtube channel up a notch. I'll be watching this a few times
Great video. Thank you. We've been shooting the Schoolhouse Rocked Podcast on a Sony a5100 for about 2 years now, but we just added a a6100 to shoot multi-camera, and this video has been really helpful in getting started with it.
Thank You so much for not skipping the creative style setup, some video talk about the full setup but they are skipping the creative style setup. Thanks!
Amazing video, my friend! I just purchased the Sony a6100 and i am pretty new to the camera world. This video has helped me tremendously to get to know the camera and how to mess with all the options it has. Thank you very much and keep doing what you are doing!
Thank you for sharing such great tips for beginners. This is my first time using A6100 and I am basically using it for music video shot in a studio with green screen. This will be a great experience and I hope to get some professional results. Thank you post posting this video. Hanif
Thank you for this! I just got my a6100 a few weeks ago and am using it now for the first time for my channel, instead my iPhone (which was great, but I wanted more features and flexibility). I'm sure I'll watch this a few times and make a cheat sheet to keep in my camera bag. Cheers from Nova Scotia :-)
I learned so much, came for basic tips and learned way more! Including how to use my shutter button to record instead of that pesky record button! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this informative video Maarten! I've been trying to film with my a6100 for so long and it's always been hit and miss. I bought the specifically for the light and I noticed everything is choppy when filming... Will try to set everything on manual especially the shutter speed. Thank you so much again I can't wait to give it a try.
So detailed! I'm considering upgrade my a6000 to a6100. Your video covered all the things I want to know about a6100 video recording capability. Thank you.
Thank You Maarten.. I tried to shoot 2 small products today (side by side review) and had crazy autofocusing issues. I think I'll try the manual focus recomendation tomorrow .. Even though I wasted 5-6 hours, I'm choosing to think of it as a learning curve. fingers crossed for tomorrow.. Great post mate !
Thanks, always nice to hear my videos are appreciated. If you have a look at the mic - bhpho.to/2JQ4QQ4 - you'll see how small it is. Then it's just stuck with tape to the inside of the frame, the (6m) cable runs down my neck into my shirt.
Thanks for an amazing tutorial! For the NTSC/PAL part, I think you only change that if you want to change the frame rate options? I kept mine NTSC and 30 frames.
Hi Maarten, thank you for that detailed explanation. I am using your suggestions but I end up shooting with standard profile with just the sharpness at -2. It would be great to have picture profiles in that camera, or at least some more control... Best, Max
Hey Marteen, have you ever made a video about what you'd recommend for beginners who only want to do photography for fun, I really enjoy your videos and would like to know what you recommend right now
Hopefully we all do photography for fun, but I get what you're after. If a good quality phone isn't meeting your needs, then nearly every brand has an entry level camera designed to take good photos with a minimum of fuss. Pick your preferred brand.
If you are shooting video, and were hoping for S-Log to provide the wide dynamic range required for sunlight exteriors with shadows, then no. Otherwise, yes.
Sony should have a ”Flat and/or Neutral” creative style as a optional preset without having to dail down one of the optional presets. Creative Style ”Portrait” set at -3, -2, -2 gets you more color grading headroom due to higher dynamic range. Setting the D-Range Optimizer to Lv5 gave me even more dynamic range. This setting is semi-hidden. I had no clue it was adjustable by moving left or right on the controls. Its ambiguous as to why Sony does not have a ”Flat HDR” preset as an option for videographers. The creating style ”Standard” saturates and shapens images. You would assume it's a flatter and more true to life style. Something tells me the a6100 can mimic the 6300 or higher by simply playing with Creative Styles settings. Technically, outside of cosmetics and IBIS , the only difference between the a6100 and higher end models are software related.
Thanks for the very informative video. I just have 1 question and i will be very grateful if you could answer. Can you go over 1 hour continuous video recording if you set the camera to 1080p and low bitrate or it will stop recording?
Thank you, this was an extremely helpfull and easy to understand video. I have a qustion though. I do have the 6100, however, in the menu setting where I chose the format, I picked XAVC S 4K. So far so good. Then underneath I wanted to pick 30p 100M, but I don't have that option. It only gives me 2 Options that is 25p 100M and 25p 60M. Is there a reason, some other setting why it won't show me the 30p?
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks!! Yes, there is a reason. You are in a geographical area where 50Hz alternating current and 25/50 fps video is (or has historically been) the norm. Although it would seem that the transformation of broadcasting from analog to digital system has made these kinds of distinctions unnecessary, Sony has not yet updated their firmware. If you must have 30 frames (which is the North American standard) you can change the camera's settings to NTSC which will make those available.
Hmmm. If you are using the settings in the video AVC-HD, 4K 30 frames, highest data rate, shutter 1/60, and your lens's widest aperture with the lowest possible ISO, then you need more light in your scene.
Great video Maarten! I’ll be sending this to a friend to help her get familiar with this camera. Why did you recommend 30p for web, instead of 24, though?
Thanks for the kind words. Although I provide more detail here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z1rdjGLmsd8.html In essence, unless your video is being projected in a movie theatre or similar where the display is capable of projecting an actual 24 frames per second, most displays (computers, tv sets, monitors) are based on 30 frames. So if you shoot at 24, the display will create 6 extra frames per second to make up for the missing frames.
Great info and great camera as well ... but so pain in the @ss such a difficult menu system. And why that touch screen is a yes for focus and no for everything else?
@@MaartenHeilbron I was not aware that this 6100 is a new one. I thought it came before 6300. Now I get the picture. Camera companies and their versions!! Let's wait for 6200 now. 🤪
Hi Maarten. Just came to your video and I find it really helpful. I need help right now in making decision to buy a new camera for my upcoming music video project. But I'm limited with my budget so I just have these two option : 1. Sony a6000 + sel 35mm oss lens/sigma 30mm lens, or 2. Sony a6100 + kit lens I want to know your opinion about it. Thankyou. I'm waiting for your kind reply.
I'd probably take the A6100 (it does 4K, it's the newer model with better focus); but I'd also consider the new ZV-E10. It's a A6xxx series with some nice video specific features. I'll probably post my review in the next week - but here's a guide to shooting video with it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e7yx8ROBBfU.html
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, there is a menu option to disable audio recording. If you connect an external mic, the camera only records sound from an external mic. The A6100 does not have XLR inputs. Hope this help.
Hi Maarten! Thank you so much for the video! It was enlightening! =D I have one question for you though: what do you think of using DRO while shooting video?
