Overheating Update: I've ran (5) test with the battery grip in room temperature. Each run I've been able to get over 45minutes. Again, your mileage may vary.
@that1cameraguy
@that1cameraguy 8 лет назад
Overheating Update 2: I went ahead and did an endurance run. I recorded in 4k24p. I was able to record continuously for a little over 2 hours and 20 minutes before the batteries died. This is using the time hack and a small usb fan to cool the system. I'm trying to illustrate the possible duration using the grip.
@that1cameraguy
@that1cameraguy 8 лет назад
I was just using a usb fan. I didn't have it setup or anything for proper use. I'm trying to build a rig with the cage that incorporates a fan though.

Why do you expect the battery grip to help the overheating issue and review it like it was meant to address it. For one, that grip is made of plastic which means very poor conductor of heat.
@EarthUnraveled

Samson Sunday because the battery is a source of heat so moving it outside the cera body helps

I got a 30 min recording for the first time with my Sony a6000, using the Smallrig cage during a fireworks display. Late night, 70 F and the screen in the open position.The Smallrig cage will prevent your hands from making contact with the body of the camera, keeping the heat of your body away when it is not sitting on a tripod. I'll be doing more tests soon to see if I can duplicate the 30 minutes mark in sunlight and warmer weather. You can see the setup on my Instagram link. instagram.com/vikingdescendent/

I enjoy your videos but if I could make one little suggestion it would be to watch the amount of times you're saying actual/actually. I know it's the most common crutch word and you probably have no idea you're saying it so much (Starting at 1:21 to 2:53 you use actual or actually 18 times. ) I'm not bashing, it's just a tip to help you improve your videos.

Just so you guys know this grip kills batteries if left inside the grip. I've lost 4 batteries ins the space of 2 months. The switch is off on the grip when I'm not using the camera. I've been refunded for the 2 batteries that came with it and am now pursuing a full refund. Just something to think about when buying... -A batteryless Sony user.

I noticed that when I put 2 batteries that are full, then after one was depleted, the next battery will just be 60 to 70%. so I'd think there is some kind of battery drain issue. do you also notice this too?
@that1cameraguy
@that1cameraguy 8 лет назад
Yeah, I do notice that. I think that the batteries are being used, is just that it doesn't read it right. So those 30% that go missing was probably used but not accurately shown. That's just a guess.
@pitsbrits
@pitsbrits 8 лет назад
+that1cameraguy probably, it might be that the battery 1 lasts a bit longer as it uses *some* of batter 2's power.

Thanks for this review! i wondered if you had any advice for an issue I'm having with the grip. I have it on my a6000 and it likes to start firing the shutter all the time. As soon as the camera is turned on. I seem to be able to fix the issue just by taking out the batteries and putting them back in. Or removing the shutter release cable and putting it back in. But it's a bit annoying. Any advice would be appreciated.

very cool! thanks for the video! so I have the neewer a6000 battery grip that I use on my a6300. the problem is, when I use my sigma 18-35 on the glidecam with it, it's too much weight and the grip flexes and it adds shake or wobble to videos. Which kind of ruins the point of the glidecam. is there anyway on this new grip that the connection would be better or if there was a way you could make the connection stronger? it would be so helpful if you could test it.

Thanks for the info; the grip I have for the a6300 has the same separation issue from the body. do you think the $300 sony grip (or even the one you have pictured from the a7s) would fit on the a6300? It may be worth spending the extra money on since I'm trying to shoot with my 70-200 every once in a while and the grip/camera looses connection, and the camera dies.
@that1cameraguy

No, the other one won't work. That's odd that you are losing connection. I've been shooting with the 70-200 G-master with a6300/battery grip. I just make sure to support the lens and grip properly.

What is you opinion on the Fuji XT2? I've seen the review of the preproduction unit from tcstv. seems to be amazing for what it is.. price point still higher, but without the a6300 issues and more native aps-c lenses it seems to be a great deal. what do you think?

I think it's awesome. It shows that manufacturers are listening to the consumer and we're going to benefit in the end. I think lens selection is a factor for me. If there were better adaptors, I'd be interested. If Fuji sends me a unit, I'd be happy to review it though.

Nice review. I have a question, I am thinking about getting this Grip in Order to extend the battery life for Shooting timelapse. Therefore I searched for experiences attached to a tripod. You mentioned this grip might bend while using a bigger lens. May I ask you to try this one on a tripod. Lenses which I will use will be the 16-70 Zeiss, different Sigma lenses 19mm, 30mm, 60mm and maybe my tamron 1750 and Sigma 10-20 with the LE EA 4. Thanks in advance

It'll flex a little. The lenses you mention don't see overly front heavy. Use overtime it may have issues. I've had a longer 70-300 on a monopod with the battery grip. It held up, but their was some flex.

@that1cameraguy
@that1cameraguy 7 лет назад
It won't solve overheating. When I use it, I try to make sure I support my lenses properly so it doesn't bend at the flex point. If you plan to use the grip heavily, like professionally, it's not going to last in my opinion. If you use it from time to time, it'll be good.

Very good review I actually just bought it and put it on my camera today it's not bad the rubber feels pretty good but overall it feels kind of plastic he stored on the cheap side but it does make balanced the camera out a lot better but the black color doesn't match that of the Sony a 6400 it's a little off I guess because it's not actually a Sony product and why Sony didn't make a battery grip is beyond me can't figure that one out I'm going to keep it for now but I'm a try there are a couple other brands out there I may order those and try those and see which one out of the three is the best. Bummer is every time you want to take your video card out your memory card you have to unscrew the grip. Yes there is quite a bit of flex I may try double-sided tape or I may try a little bit of Velcro I don't like the flexing

At 3:50 - The connector is inserted 180 degrees for what it should have been designed for. They should have used a right-90 degrees connector instead of a left-90 degree which, we can see in the video. Silly design. Other than that, I'm getting the grip for my long days in the desert (no video and no vertical shooting). Thank you for the video.

Nice review!.. Will that grip fit my sony a6000?

The box says a6000/a6300. So it should.

It definitely does, I use it on my a6000 without any problem. The new box of mine btw said only a6300 and when I asked the Meike guys they said it doesn't work on the a6000. Maybe they have some legal problem with Sony, otherwise it doesn't make any sense to shrink your market...

I use the a6300 on a tripod a lot. Is the grip loose enough to make it not stable on a tripod? Thanks
@that1cameraguy
@that1cameraguy 8 лет назад
It depends on the lens. If you put a long telephoto lens on it, it will flex. I'm sure with enough time, the grip may become unstable. In the meantime while I tested it. It's fine. Do you have an example of a lens you might mount on it?

+that1cameraguy thanks for your reply. I googled it and it weighs 482g. Maybe you have a lens comparable in weight? Also, how do you charge the batteries? Can you charge it in the grip or you have to remove it? Coz i already ordered one in ebay last week. Thanks a lot!
@that1cameraguy
@that1cameraguy 8 лет назад
You change the batteries through the cage that slides in from the side. The only thing you have to remove the grip for is the memory card. I have the batis 85 which weighs 475grams. Having it on a tripod, it feels secure. I don't see any major flexing on the grip at all.

Hmm. I've actually purchased some of this material to use with the small rig cage. I've tried opening up the a6300 to add this thermal silicone pad, but its not similar to the a6000. The internals of the a6000 aren't the same as the a6300.
