let me guess, you recorded in 1080p right. Try it in 4k, i guarantee it wont be last in 10 minutes.
@E-StudiosEU
@E-StudiosEU 8 лет назад
Do you really think I use this camera for just filming in 1080p? the reason why people buy this one is because of the 6k signal which down-sampled to 4k and give a detailed image. I hear a lot of people got this "overheating" issue in warm country's. P.S. I had this camera before it was even on the market.

+that1cameraguy What was the room temperature you were shooting at ? Back here it gets to as high as 48 degree Celsius outside. Probably not for me for travel vlogging ? Also, how much time it takes to cool down to start recording again if you don't swap the battery and don't have the cage?
@ranytan5972
@ranytan5972 8 лет назад
+that1cameraguy +Prashant Vikal Yeah, wondering will the cage help dissipate heat outside, or absorb more heat from the sun since its all black. I have overheating issue with stills only at 10am, 32°C, with A6000(black) I could shoot whole day under scorching sun. I probably can use the cage to mount fan and battery on. But this problem should not be there at the first place, because I shoot stills only most of the time.

Some people crying for the 4k overheating, ok, buy a nikon d5 (6000 dollars camera), can shoot 3min in 4k only... The a6300 cost 1000$ and you want all the best. Is like buy a 3000$ car but want the same as a ferrari.... If you know the limitations you can do good jobs. I have this camera and knowing that i think is the best camera in that price, slog is just magic... I came from the canon 5d mk ii and the sony is an other world. A friend have the gh4 with vlog and it's so good but i think the sony is a little bit better, and the slog its free, vlog costs him 100$. And in low light terms, a6300 is so good with an aps-c sensor. In the other hand, i like the touch screen and gh4 menus. This are the best two options for me right now, a6300 and gh4. G7 seems good but i don't now if it can shoot in vlog, for me it's important for post processing. This is my personal opinion! I'm not a sony fanboy, just a person how try to buy the best in price/quality range. I recommend it for sure, i would buy it another time! (sorry for my english)

Excellent video and very helpful. I'm trying to downscale my camera equipment from an FS5 and a7sII to a pair of a6300's and this video has been great. I bought the small rig cage and changed the batteries every 29 minutes and 50 seconds. I've now recorded indoors for 90 minutes without any overheating warnings. I think the combination of the cage and battery swapping is a good fix for the overheating problem, at least indoors at room temperature (72 degrees). I didn't leave the battery door open, I've just used the SmallRig cage and done battery swapping. Hopefully Sony releases a firmware update to address the issue so battery swapping isn't necessary. Just as a side note. Using Class 10 U1 cards works in 4k recording on the a6300 but overheating occurs earlier than using Class 10 U3 cards. Class 10 U1 cards record 4K video on the FS5 and a7sII without any problems.

First off I'm using a slightly older Sony camera(I wanted to pick up a 2nd camera that would give me a full frame field of view with speedbooster for vlogging and b-roll, a little throw around cine camera) that also had heating issues and fits into the same cage. So first off I actually opted for a grey/silver variant because black absorbs heat out in the sun and Im not sure about the a6300 coming in other colors but felt it was worth mentioning - also the cage allows you to put a grip on the right so you're not actually touching the camera at all which helps, I hadn't thought about it as a heat sink though. Would you consider getting thermal pads to stick to the base of the camera/where the camera comes close to contacting the cage? I'm sure in black cut to size it would be discreet and turn the cage into an actual heatsink. I was considering maybe making a heatsink mount with a sheet of copper that would fit behind the screen and attach to the back of the camera where the heat is and extend out to the left and up above the camera where you could attach maybe a Zalman CNPS2X while also bolting it to the cage for added stability - active cooling that is out of the way like another accessory and they're designed to be quiet... The other thing with the high speed SD cards - thats huge and works really well.

No, you really can't shoot with the cage in direct sunlight, it will overheat sadly. I really don't trust the a6300 for long recordings at 4k. I was out in about 95 degree F weather, and the a6300 overheat warning came on with the cage and I was just taking photos

I see where you're going with that question. Nope I don't do any video shooting. However the 80D is like lugging a brick around when I'm in Europe shooting for hours. Hence looking for a lighter and compact camera like the A6300. @that1cameraguy
@that1cameraguy 8 лет назад
+Pope Weddings That's a tough one. Do you need long continuous 4k recording? The overheating hasn't been fully resolved with this camera. On the other hand, the Sony a7Sii handles longer continuous recording times better. If you need really good stills and autofocus performance, the a6300 delivers on that.

Here is another tip; I use a Feelworld Lut7 external monitor while shooting. It is fastened to a UUrig camera cage by using the UUrig R059 camera monitor bracket (strongest bracket to the monitor). The external monitor mounts 2 sony f970 batteries on the back of the monitor. The monitor has a power out jack and I run power to the A6300 by using a dummy battery. This week I shot from 8am to 545pm straight in the Indonesian tropical sun with zero overheating problems. The 2 f970 batteries will power both the camera and monitor for 5-6 hours. You can change 1 battery out while allowing the other battery to run the monitor and camera and keep filming. I believe using the dummy battery helps reduce heat. The bottom line is I am shooting all day long in direct tropical sun and have zero heating issues with over 9 hrs continuous 4k shooting .

People want a consumer and non-professional camera to have the same capabilities as other professional-quality cameras! Anyway, these examples given here to avoid overheating seem valid to me especially if the grip is aluminum as it is a good heat sink! Removing the battery cover and moving the rear LCD away from the camera body is good advice! If this camera had EVF like my Sony A7 it would be enough to configure the EVF and turn off the rear LCD. EVF produces less heat because its consumption is lower.

I plan on buying this camera. I don't plan on using 4k often; but if i do, i would have recording times of about 5 minutes more or less. Would overheating be an issue that i should worry about?

This was helpful, thanks. Another approach - if you are doing long interviews or similar - is to connect the camera via HDMI to a Blackmagic Mini Monitor or similar and a laptop and record externally using Davinci Resolve. This way the camera is powered and records externally. You still need to keep a battery inside though - the camera will still use it a tiny bit - even if it doesn't look like it. Other thoughts are - recording UHD uses LESS power than HD because the processor does less and as others say in the comments - turning wifi off helps.

Ive no doubt there will be many thinking why should I have to go to all this trouble to make the camera work properly. Shouldn't it be able to do all that Sony state without this extra hassle? Well of course it should, however these are great tips, effective work arounds to get the most out of the A6300 capabilities. Thanks for sharing.

After 2 years, the damage has been done to this camera. I think this is what everyone will always remember with the Sony a6300. Infamously overheating. Firmware updates help but they are only a quick band-aid solution to this. The Sony a6700 or whatever next has to overcome this. Designing and implement better hardware or software to avoid overheating.

+David Kashner No. I mean, maybe you can buy it from a retailer. Try and see if you can get it to overheat. If it does, return it. Just check return policies. It's hot here in California too, and when I've had the camera out in direct sunlight recording video, it would shut off in 5min

The 4K quality on this camera is insanely good, so we want to be able to shoot for longer without overheating. We do a lot of shoots at racetracks, so we're outdoors in the heat. I wonder how much the cage would help in that situation.
@that1cameraguy
@that1cameraguy 8 лет назад
If the sun is directly hitting your camera on a very warm day 90F plus heat, it will overheat very quickly. The cage will end up absorbing that heat as well and transferring it to the camera. I ran a test with the camera in direct sunlight recording at 4k. It shut off in 6 minutes.

+that1cameraguy We generally don't shoot more than 5 minutes at a time, but we shoot all day long at these events. Yesterday - over the course of about 8 hours on an 85 degree day - we shot a mix of about 200 stills and about 40 4K clips ranging in length from 30 seconds to 2 minutes but ultimately missed a few critical shots at the end of the day due to the overheat warning. Updated to the new firmware this morning to see if it helps at all. Might order the cage too before our next shoot. I also heard that faster memory cards might not contribute as much heat.
@that1cameraguy
@that1cameraguy 8 лет назад
+The Awesomer I think the fast SD card myth has been debunked. The camera can only saturate the SD card some 30MB/s I believe. I honestly think an active cooling system with be the best way, using some type of fan to cool off the camera. It isn't ideal, but I think if you really want to record all day, it might be the thing to look at. That is pretty awesome that the camera held up for as long it did.
@theawesomer
@theawesomer 8 лет назад
The theory I heard about the SD card isn't that higher speeds are possible - it's that the higher speed cards operate cooler at low speeds. Dunno if that makes any sense or not. That said, I agree that active cooling is probably the best solution. It's too bad that we need to worry about this stuff since the camera is so awesome otherwise.

I'm in the market to get a A6300, would you say shooting 1-4minute clips on and off would still cause overheating? Cause so far I've been hearing people who record over 10+minutes have the overheating issue. So my assumption is the camera wouldnt overheat if I'm doing small clips every 2-4mins. What do you think?

I'm sure you'll be fine with short clips as long as the camera is not in direct sunlight on a hot day.

Hi, I'm planing to buy this camera. I'm shooting music videos. Because of that, I rarely make continuous shots longer that 5 minutes (just when I'm recording the singing parts). Usually, I'm turning off the recording button every 10 - 20 seconds to reframe the shot. This type of shoot can go on even an hour without a break longer than 5 minutes. Can you please tell me, under these circumstances, can I expect overheating issues??
@that1cameraguy
@that1cameraguy 7 лет назад
Sorry for the delay in reply. It's risky. It could overheat still. Even when the camera is on (not recording) it can overheat. Also, it appears that different model a6300's overheat faster than others, or that is the presumed theory.

Thank you! I took your advice and bought a cage at the same time I bought the bodies… works like a champ! I don't understand why everyone is bitching so hard about the fact that this happens at all? I did a ton of research before I bought and I'm a "died in the wool" Canon guy… this camera is AMAZING and would be, even if it was twice the price! but at $1k… it's really the only choice! and the fact that is APSC and not "full framed" is even a better reason! (Correct me if I'm wrong here, but) All of the top digital cinema cameras, like the C100, C300, FS7,even the Red's… are all APSC / super 35 and NOT full framed. Add that it has way more (video) resolution that it's big brothers the A7xxx's and that's the final straw. HOWEVER… the "rolling shutter" (in 4k) is almost more than a deal breaker! ah but the resolution….(the "rolling shutter" is insanely bad!!)

Glad it helped! Yes, the a6300 I'd a remarkable little camera if you work around the subtle flaws. The only thing when recording video and overheating is that you can't record for long in a direct sunlight on a 90F + day, which is typical where I'm at. Using an umbrella to keep it in shade helps a lot. The benefit of the cinema cameras is that it's full featured with Nd filters and proper audio, making them more appealing to some. Enjoy your a6300!
@Studio51media
@Studio51media 8 лет назад
Also note that I do not shoot with auto lens but only with cine primes and I power with an external USB battery pack. I've seen tests where a guy puts an amp meter on the USB port and the power usage goes way up with the auto focus working it's tail off! power draw equals heat! and with the a6300's amazing fast auto focus, you KNOW the CPU in the camera is working hard (to be fast…) and speed equals heat too! I don't even like the look of auto focus and as a video pro (I like to think of myself as a Cine guy too?) I prefer to pull my own focus… even if I sometimes get it wrong!
@Studio51media
@Studio51media 8 лет назад
same here in Washington DC Metro area 90F plus. And yeah, you are, of course, correct about the digital Cine cameras… but it used to be that you couldn't even remotely get there from here (so to speak) UNLESS you could afford to rent or buy those cameras. Audio for me in my cameras is used only for sync. I only use external multi track audio recorders anyway. ND filters are the reason I have Matte boxes too. my point still is the glorious resolution 6k! (down sampled NOT pixel binning) to 4k (hence the HORRIBLE shutter roll) I just wish you could record raw? or at least have 4,2,2 color space onboard…but again $1k!?!

For Studio recording would using a mains AC Power Supply Adapter eliminate overheating issues (since there is no battery heating up inside the body)? Also will recording to external source through HDMI out (Decklink 4k, video assist 4k etc) help prolong recording time as far as overheating is concerned?
@that1cameraguy
@that1cameraguy 8 лет назад
+Evan Fotis It can still overheat even if you use AC Power Supply Adapter. Even using an external recorder can have the unit overheat. However, I think in a studio environment where the ambient temperature isn't very high, the external recorder will do well.

ATOMOS is the only fix, the codec will be different, you won't use anymore the internal XAVC from Sony but the one from ATOMOS with a higher bitrate. The proc from the sony is the issue.

Have you tried fast Sd cards. I've seen lately that faster cards have helped with the over heat problem. This camera is my first pick for my next camera. The only thing that has stopped me from buying it now is the over heating problem. All my vacations are during the winter flying to SE Asia where it's hot and sunny all the time. I don't know if there really is a permeant fix for the over heat problem other than Sony putting a better heat shield in the camera. Saw a video where they took the a6000 apart and put in a better heat shield and they said this fixed the over heat problem permanently. What to believe? It's a great camera for under 1000 dollars except for this problem. Thanks for all your hard work. Jon

I partially opened up my a6300 to do something similar as the video. However, it doesn't have the same components as the a6000. I believe the person who did the video said he opened up the a6300 but could not find a location to improve the heat shield I believe.

Wow, I didn't know there was that much difference in the two cameras. You are one strong person to try this on your a6300. There would be no way I would as I'd have all kinds of parts left over. So I guess that's not the fix for the a6300. What a shame. Thanks.
