FYI, the A6500 cage also fits the A6300 beautifully! Just got mine in today. :) And the little screw on the left of the A6500 smallrig adds an additional contact point through the right silver eyelit.

I just picked up the a6300 from B&H as a B-Camera for my FS700R. I bought your a6300 guide and thanks to you I was able to navigate thru the camera's menu without any trouble. Also, I will without a doubt build this rig with the battery pack. Thanks, man, you rock, keep up the good work.

Great video Caleb! and totally of interest to me as I am building up my cage rig for my newly purchased a6300. I too am using the smallrig cage as the basis for it. But I am using a larger monitor for mine, the Aputure VS-2 FineHD. I bought your a6300 guide, it's fantastic.

Awesome rigs! I've got the 18650 battery handle-style cage and had mentioned the sd extension previously. I did some testing and realized the extension is finnicky as hell but I did get it working to the point of taking a 1hr, 10 min 4K video before it shut off (recovered file just as always). And I promise you a quick glimpse of my setup is still on my list of videos to do (I'll send you a link when ready) but keep in mind it won't be nearly as production quality ;-). I really appreciate the time and effort you put into each of your videos, keep at it!

Love rigging videos, especially with the a6300. Definitely curious to see what you think of that new Ikan monitor. One thing I've been struggling with is wanting a top handle but also wanting to be able to use the viewfinder sometimes when I'm outdoors. The handle always gets in the way. Hmmm.... I wish these small monitors were brighter or came with loupes.
@dslrvideoshooter
@dslrvideoshooter 8 лет назад
Thanks Emile! You could not use a monitor and just flip the handle so it is going forward and not blocking the EVF.
@EmileModesitt
@EmileModesitt 8 лет назад
Good point about flipping the handle. The only reason I like it facing backwards is that it's more balanced. I did find a loupe that fits on the a6300's LCD with magnets though (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M1NB5YY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), so I'm going to give that a try for run and gun stuff.

I just got the A6300. It was going to replace my GH4, but I am having second thoughts. I am probably going to sell it mainly due to the rolling shutter. The rolling shutter is twice as bad as the GH4's 4k. Plus the 1080 200mbps on the GH4 is really phenomenal. Plus the 96fps is much better then the 120fps on the A6300 as far as video quality. It was a tough choice but I think I am sticking with the GH4 despite the A6300 sharper image (downsampled 6k), and low light abilities.

Hey Caleb! Love the rig, just wanted to give one quick tip to anyone who wants to build this. I noticed that, although the monitor just barely clears the top handle, you won't be able to shoot anything with the camera higher than eye level, because you can't title the monitor down (and the signal to the camera is cut off due to HDMI if you're recording in 4k :/) So I would suggest picking up a 3" Articulating monitor arm, rather than the ball head mount. This little guy has a ball head mount, but it also has a joint that will rotate as well. So, if u need to get a shot where the camera was above eye level, you could swivel the arm to the side, and then adjust the ball head so the monitor is oriented properly. Hope this helps! Here's a link to a nice cheap 3" articulating arm. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1306252-REG/e_image_ei_a52_2_875_shoe_mount.html

interesting idea, why do you not use a powerbank with this camera, that would be dead cheap and get easily twentyfold the shooting time compared to the build in battery (if you need that much). i think it would be easy to mount a anker powercore to the smallrig, that would also make the setup a little more stable while filming due to the inertia of the big powerbank. and you also had the internal battery. i think a tinkerer like you could make a alternative and maybe even cheaper setup with a powerbank that appears quite mature.

How does the video of the a6300 compare to the video of the C100. I suppose that as the sony downscales to 4k from 6k it is much sharper than the 4k downscaling to 1080p, C100. Some other videos demonstrate that the 6300 also has better low light capabilities than the C100. These days you can get a used C100 for around 1500 dollars, and a sony a6300 with a lens would probably go for a similar price. It would be awesome to see how they stack up!

Would you still recommend this camera to someone wanting to get into narrative-based filmmaking - as in short films that have a story and dialogue? of course, I'll be using it as a run-n-gun style hybrid shooter and for vlogging when I can. I was thinking of upgrading from the 600d/t3i to this or the a6500 and I'm not sure what I want to go for - if and when I do upgrade, I'm thinking of getting a few lenses and a zhiyun (or dji ronin s) gimbal... so not sure...

Hi Caleb. I was waiting for this video. I shoot a lot of travel videos and shooting outside without an EVF loupe or something to shade the monitor is nearly impossible. I also like the extra point of contact. Unfortunately I am afraid of the overheating due to the screen beings against the body. I really like your positioning of the monitor and I was wondering if something like an proper EVF (screen and eyepiece like the koolertron one) would work there allowing me to have the other screen away from the body.

@datenraten1983
@datenraten1983 8 лет назад
Hey Caleb, awesome video, really informative! For the upcoming Ikan screen review could you pay some special attention to its peaking and its usability? I am coming from a Canon background and recently jumped ship to an a7s2, and while the IQ is amazing I am bummed out by the cam's internal peaking. I have been spoiled by the Magic Lantern focus options / decent peaking, magic zoom, oversharpening filter / and right now I feel I missed a limb or such on my new cam. So I'm more than eager about external screen solutions for fixing it as I'm using manual lenses.
@datenraten1983
@datenraten1983 8 лет назад
Extending this comment a bit :) What I found using the camera's inner peaking (which I think should be nearly identical with the a6300) is that in still mode actually it samples higher res image for peaking than in video mode/once recording. That means that the peaking becomes pretty much useless, it can be negated by cranking up the "detail" somewhat, but then again.. who wants to record an oversharpened image? Hope you got what I mean, in case it's not clear I can demonstrate it in a vid. Keep up the good work man, cheers!
@dslrvideoshooter
@dslrvideoshooter 8 лет назад
I'll be sure to look into that. Honestly I really don't like peaking, because even on a good monitor it isn't as good as punching in. And on the iKan monitor, it is so sharp you can instantly tell in you're sharp or not. Reminds me of the GH4 camera screen which is probably my favorite screen on any camera.
@datenraten1983
@datenraten1983 8 лет назад
Peaking tends to be messy I agree with you, that's why I'm a big fan of an oversharpened image, through the aliasing patterns it really gives away - with really high accuracy - whether you are in focus or not. Of course punching in is the most reliable solution, but it's a nightmare if you are shooting moving subjects (concerts, action, etc.) - especially if they are not centered, which most of the time they aren't. Looking forward the review!
@dslrvideoshooter
@dslrvideoshooter 8 лет назад
In that case you'll love this little monitor. Like the GH4, I don't need to punch in the check focus do to the crazy sharp image on the screen. Love it.

guys you can buy directly from the smallrig website and it's much cheaper than Amazon. why? Amazon treats their sellers like shit, squeezes them dry in their margins, and then also have to pay a commission to affiliates, lose a ton in customer service (refunds, exchanges, 'accidental damage'). the money you save, you can use to support Caleb on patreon or his video lessons.

smallrig is based in Shenzhen so anyone buying smallrig on the Asia side of the world, it's a no fucking brainer to buy from smallrig directly. Hi. Nice videos you got here. One question though. That power/audio box you've build, can it be adapted to any other cameras (Lumix, Nikon, Canon, etc) ? If yes, can this be a better option than hacking a GH4 for re-routing the headphone/microphone jack (especially for those that are not electronic savvy) ? I know that the main intent for the GH4 is to make it look closer to a C100, but that handle on the C100 as been sometime a pain because of the way it's build (poorly balanced) when you use it and also the electronics inside the handle. If the handle breaks, you can't use it at all and replacements for such handles are scarce (if there's any, unless you build it yourself, of course). That's why I think a "ProBox" adapted for the GH4 (with mostly the same design including the audio in/output) would be much better in a greater numbers of situations. Also, On this Pro Box with the giant Sony battery, is there any charge indicator visible on the camera or do you have to buy expensive batteries that come with charge indicator on them ? Thanks to answer
@dslrvideoshooter
@dslrvideoshooter 8 лет назад
The box would work with any camera, you would just have to change out the dummy battery. As for the headphone jack, the only way to relocate it is to open up the camera and do some scary stuff. You could totally use something like this to replace the YAGH interface and it would work well. The battery level from the plate can be seen on the camera screen. So you don't need expensive batteries with level indicators.

The A7smkI is still a great camera. I would get what you can afford and start shooting. A7s used could also be a great budget move. If I had to choose between the two for my main camera I would probably go with the A7s since I need good audio on the go.

Thank you - I am upgrading from a Nikon entry-level DSLR, so am looking for more advanced video functionality. The A7S looks like the best way to go.

at 1:04, it looks like 2 xlr inputs on the bottom.. Im looking to record from external mics and am looking for an alternative to attaching a Zoom H4N

Yes it has two XLRs, stay tuned for today's video... The item I review will be perfect for you. Video should be live in under an hour.

Why didn't you just remove the camera strap loops? That's the first thing I did when I got my sony

I probably will, But I know I'll lose them if/when I need to sell the camera.

Thanks man! If you don't use the raw capabilities, I would say goodbye to the pocket.

At 1:23 on the left side, I can see this green tape on the monitor. You also have that on other things. What is that and where do I get it?
@dslrvideoshooter
@dslrvideoshooter 8 лет назад
That is just green gaffers tape. I use it to differentiate my gear from fellow shooter's gear.
