I have a gx85. I am seriously considering the a6400. Just having the ability to shoot 4k at 60mbps bitrate will eventually pay for the camera due to less hard drives to buy for space! No one ever talks about this. Also I heard that you can power it with a usb battery bank for shooting hours on end. This is huge. Unlimited recording time, this is huge. This is why I could never leave Panasonic because I shoot long live events on unmanned tripods almost exclusively. I wanted the A7III but that time limit was the deal breaker for me. I would like to know if it will work with the standard 12v usb battery banks? I assume you don't need the internal battery in the a6400 for this to work (meaning not being dependent on it)? Also the killer feature is the clear zoom in 4k when using a prime lens. Since I will be shooting mostly at 4k 30fps, since this mode has a slight crop, I wonder if clear zoom doesn't quite have the "up to 2x" zoom range? Also I suppose when shooting 4k 30p, I assume it might be downsampling perhaps from only 5.5 or 5k to 4k? Not sure. I'm really tempted to sell my gx85 now and get the sigma 16mm 1.4 prime for the a6400. The price is right. Then I will be dependent on the poor man's 4k clear zoom crop feature :) This camera opens many possibilities. This is just so exciting for me to think about. Finally a camera that almost fills my every need for my style of 4k shooting. BTW, thanks for the video in the past showing how to unlock the Cine-D profiles in the gx85. I've used that a lot! Since it sounds like you are moving to the Sony, now I have to.
Oh man, thanks for your comments! So many questions here. I need to find a 12v battery bank to run a test for you. I could be wrong, but I believe the a6400 over samples all its 4k footage with the full 6k sensor. I think the advantage of going with that prime is you will also be able to film in the dark with the Sony, you can crop for zooms. It's nice to have a camera you don't actually need to hack in order to produce usable footage, and that autofocus is crazy - but I'm not selling off my Panasonic system just yet, the GH5 is still my staple for A roll... but on that note, I really need to review the a7iii. :)
A7III and the A6400 will both run on a USB battery bank. However the A6400 will still overheat after about an 100 or so. If you mount it on a tripod, move the screen out and have a little fan pointed on it than yea it could almost go forever. The A7iii does have a recording time limit unlike the A6400

I hate putting ugly tape on such a beautiful camera like this. The side clips are just like a standard key ring. Just screw them off. Never cared about rolling shutter that much because NO ONE will actually be shaking the camera violently like that where the rolling shutter will be that bothersome. But anyway, JUST GOT THIS CAMERA AND IT’S FREAKING AMAZING! Coming from a Canon 70D of 4 years, this is a blessing! All the points you’re making is 100% accurate and legitimate selling points. I broke my pocket just to get this before my July 26, 2019th birthday and I am so satisfied!

That was fast, on point and realy honest, concratulations for that. There are so many reviews out there for the GH5 and almost nobody tells about the 120fps and the fact you have NO autofocus, which realy sucks when you use it on a gimbal, so thank you very much for that.
Your experience with the formatting time on the A6400 is weird to me. I've yet to pick up an A6400 but I own an A6000 and A6500 and the format takes about 5 seconds in my experience.
I've been watching a ton of comparison videos on the A6400 recently (vs other cameras), and the one you put out was just really enjoyable to watch. Keep up the good work my man!

I’m shocked (well, perhaps I shouldn’t be) by how much better the GH5 image is in this video. I want to get the a6400 as a secondary camera to my a7III but there are issues that are very obvious. This video you have posted, the GH5 footage is a lower exposure and the face is not so blown out as the a6400 is. The GH5 footage is warmer, skin tone is nicer (more yellow), where the a6400 is more blue, the skin tones are blown out and it ‘appears’ to not even compete with the GH5. Is this because you colour corrected the GH5 footage but not the a6400? Is the a6400 capable of capturing a much better exposure and skin tone. We know the answer is ‘yes it can’. So why is your GH5 and a6400 footage not colour corrected to be the same? Even using a ‘match color’ option might have helped. Even bringing down the exposure on the a6400 would have brought the highlights on your face back into alignment. When I see this video beside some GH5 footage, I’m concerned. Sadly, I would never buy a GH5 because the autofocus is lacking and the smaller sensor was not for me, but you can’t deny that the image quality is beautiful. I had to go with Sony (after leaving Canon) because I shoot stills as well and that is not a strong point for the GH5. Rolling shutter is also really bad with the a6400. I don’t spin my camera around like crazy too often, but it would be nice to have that option yet, the a6400 is not an upper level camera, it’s a $900 camera and what it does do at that price point is absolutely remarkable. And that has to be considered when people expect 4K/60 out of a $900 camera. It’s not going to happen. You get what you pay for. My plan for the a6400 is some tripod ‘secondary’ footage while shooting with the a7III and also use the a6400 on my Gimbal. That will stabilize the footage very well and I don’t spin around often with the gimbal. If it’s a fast whip for a blurry transition, then the rolling shutter may not matter. I guess I’ll find out. My main concern with this posted video is the face exposure and colour difference between the GH5 and the a6400. I would like to think this could have been much closer, if not exactly the same if you’re actually colour correcting the footage. Your thoughts?
The difference in image quality could be due to my inexperience with the a6400. In my GH5 I shoot in CineD and then color corrected, but the a6400 was in standard and the image left alone - so the dynamic range would favor the GH5 no doubt.. The exposure settings were the same according to the camera settings. I’m sure you can get a better image with the a6400 then I’m achieving though - the bit rates were the same. I just am not familiar enough with it yet.. those menus are confusing. :)
Yes, the menus do seem convoluted but once you’re used to them, they aren’t so bad. I came from Canon to Sony and it was a huge departure from what I was used to. But Sony seems to manage a lot of features that the camera is capable of, so consequently, the menus are full. The upper tabs seem help organize the content a little. They could be better, I’ll give you that, but I have adapted. :-) S-log 2 or Cine4 seems to be popular. There are so many options, it’s crazy at times.
I noticed you talking about the SD card issue with the Sony and I came across this with my a7III and four new 128GB Sandisk cards I had just purchased. The problem was not the card, as you know, it was a required firmware update needed on the Sony to recognize these newer cards. Once I did the update, all the cards worked perfect!
the weirdest thing in a6400 is in photo department - lossy raw, which may result in some artifacts in high contrast shots (because of my style of shooting (some weird experimental stuff) I tend to have this artifacts in 30-40% cases)
I've just reviewed my footage from a 3 day trip to Jinan and Beijing with GX85 and Viltrox Sigma 18-35. 70% looks spectacular, 30% is out of focus because of not being able to see focus on the screen in sunlight. Aside from the benefical arm exercise, I really love the idea of perfect AF in a light and low light package. Pity about the lack of ibis, the jello can be avoided I guess. A7000, where arst thou? Great video. You can take off the strap rings, no need to tape them 😜 Please test the A6400 with the 18-35 😁😍👍
Great demo. I got the a6400 and just diving into it. Question, what do you recommend in terms of a monitor. I have a Macbook Pro M1 and trying out a Samsung UR55 4K UHD monitor. I was trying to stay under $500 for a monitor and was trying to decide between the Samsung or the BenQ PD2700U 27 inch 4K ($500).
ive heard the video talking about having problem of sd card reading, does it do problem to you? what should my sd card description be to capture 4k 100mbps
I love using the camera but I simply can't get my images to be as clean as I would like, this may be due to he lens I'm using or my lighting situations but I just can't nail it down.
DEANOMINATOR what lens are you using? The standard 16-50 lens is garbage. I’d try to pick up the 18-105 or 18-135 Sony oss. I’ve gotten super clean shots with both
David Newton I agree, the GH5 is setup so the lighting and background are staged, and the a6400 its at an angle with harsh light and with the backlight in the shot. Same framing and matched color grade would be really interesting to see.
A6400 was my first ever camera, I am happy with pretty much everything except the fact of the poor colour science and also no in body image stabilisation. When I have the money to upgrade, I will surely get a Sony A7R III 🤞
Lack of 4K60, lack of IBIS, lack of flip to the side display (flip up screen blocked by shotgun mic), tiny battery, lack of dual SD. No way. I wish Panasonic had that autofocus but all the other stuff is better on Panasonic.. You can buy the Panasonic G9 second hand for below $1000, I bought mine for $1100 new. My camera is definitely better on so many points than the a6400.
Depends on your own goals - both are great! I haven’t personally used the a6500.. so I can’t say.. but if you’re not married to Sony and don’t need IBIS - check out the Fuji X-T3.
We are really torn between GH5 and A6400. GH5 has a £300 cashback here in UK ending today, so GH5 for £1,100 versus A6400 for £950. I nearly snap up the GH5 but after watching your video we now have to think twice. What do you reckon? should we buy the GH5 but time is running out.
That's an incredible deal for a GH5. If you need IBIS, just go get it.. but if you absolutely need great autofocus, grab that a6400 - it's really an amazing camera. Here's a kicker, if you don't need flip out screen that lets you see yourself in vlog mode, go look at the Fujifilm X-T3. It's like a GH5 but with Sony autofocus, just no IBIS. I'm reviewing that this next couple weeks.
I own G9 have a few questions 1-how good is the touch screen was it responsive compared to GH5 2-how good was the higher iso, 3-what lens were you using looks like 18-135 and how good was it? 4-how good was slow motion?
1- touch screen only works for selecting focus, not for navigating menus. But when using it to focus, it works great. 2- Higher iso was great up to 3200, usable at 6400, but falls apart at 12800. 3- Was using the 18-135. It was a great one to start with, but not great for low light (f3.5 at widest).. I would recommend going with a faster lens once you can afford one. 4- Slow motion was very good - 1080p 120fps, with autofocus.
@@TommyCallaway just one more question i do all types of photography with g9 even some wedding stuff, i like xt3 but i find the fuji lenses to be very expensive even their 50 1.8 is expensive so am debating between a6500 18-135 + crane v2 gimble-$1699.00 or xt3 18-55-$1699 Which would you choose
I would go with Sony. In my area at a glance there is higher demand for Sony, so if you have buyers remorse, resale will be easier. Additionally, I’ve never used Fuji so take that with a grain of salt - it might be a great camera.
Hey you can set it, so your files wont have the same name ever again. And it only takes 20 sec to prepare the sd card the first time you use it after using it with a non sony system 👍
Learning a new camera system always has its speedbumps :) I also figured out how to stop blowing out my highlights and such with a few simple picture profile adjustments.
Great one, but detail, why did u want to show that over killed skin with the Sony ? There's no doubt HLG or something even faster in the dialing spectrum of Sony's menu would have done the trick.... That said very good one.
I didn't have much time with the Sony before I had to send it back - it was my own inexperience with Sony causing the image quality to suffer. I did get the image quality looking way better with a few simple tweaks in the settings but never made the update video before it had to go back. Thanks for the comment!
I need a REAL HACK...someone PLEASE HELP. I have the Japanese version of the a6400, and I cannot read the menu. It is also one of the ONLY sony cameras without being able to find any language with the "A" menu. Someone please help me
esau is The Devil try using google translate. I accidentally purchased a GH4 (Japanese). Using my phone, I took pictures of every page in the menu, every page etc... using Google translator app, I was able to translate every page. I hope that helps.
They’re both very sharp - mainly depends on the lens you’re using. After working with the a6400 for awhile, you can get a great picture out of it with lots of DR after adjusting the picture profiles a little. Just got a little learning behind it. :) either is great, a6400 is very capable
Sony a6400? Great AF. But have notices that white balance is overblown? Just take a look at your face and the white reflex on your cheekbones and forehead. It’s a joke as is the jello effect of its rolling shutter. Absurd.
