Sony a6700 - Four Year Wait For This?

Thank you for your opinion. It's a breath of fresh air. Most RU-vidrs say this camera is revolutionary, and it's very annoying when it's obviously not.

What can I say. I started watching Kai 10 years ago on Digital Rev. :))) So far I am, and I will be a loyal subscriber. Great job. Keep doing high-quality reviews. It is always fun and exciting to watch. P.S. this is my first comment since 2010.

Sony's tech trickle down approach makes sense, it's just really uninspiring. Really the Toyota Camry of cameras. Utilitarian, will get better after a couple years, but if you have a Camry already, why upgrade even after 4 years?

A lot of people will be looking at how much this reduces the price of the earlier models, the A6400 for around £800 and the A6500 around £900 and the A6600 around £1,000 with the kit lens will get a lot of people into this system. Legacy models have been due a price reduction for some time.

it's hard to tell the difference between the X-H2S(?) and A6700 in that soccer bit when using a wide angle at a small aperture, everything looks like it's in-focus so tracking seemed like an unimportant feature in that scenario.

glad you brought up the 4 year void. this camera has what i wouldve expected in a 6400 replacement 3 years ago.

I feel that this is not directly comparable to the X-T5. The most direct competitor is the X-S20 which aside from the less performing autofocus (most likely, but by how much, unknown) and lack of weather sealing, offers a highly compelling package for 100 dollars less.

This is the best a6700 video. Besides the information and thoughts, the fun side of the video was fantastic. I did not just laugh a lot, I also laughed so loud because I wasn't able to contain myself. I completely lost it at "Oh hello".

Best review I’ve seen. All the other RU-vidrs are just hyping this. No open gate, no increased resolution for stills. Shit viewfinder and screen. Was waiting for this to complement my FX3 but god it sucks. Wanted 40mp

I like having a a6000 series form factor and functionality with the tech of the newest A7s. Will certainly keep an eye out for one would make a good concert bring along

Just bought my a6400 today from Adorama

Some people say that Sony didn't hold back on this one. If 55 frame raw burst rate with 11 fps on a 10 year old resolution isn't holding back, I don't know what is. Plus, no RAW video HDMI output like the X-S20 that this competes with.

love this review! been watching kai and lok since the digitial rev days. it looks like to be a pretty nice camera. I really like what sony did to the mirrorless industry as a canon fanboy that didn;t switch to sony and waited it out until the so so r camera but the later r cameras are much nicer keep up the great work!

Both a6700, R7, and XS20 are great cameras. Although im not really into these type of content creation focused cameras. I am more on the photography side. I guess the most interesting thing about these releases are there are more grumnblings against the a6700, when we can consider how it has better rolling shutter and video dynamic range than the r7. It also has the best video autofocus and lens breathing compensation, compared to the low performance of fujis when it comes to autofocus. And lastly the lens options; you cant beat sony when it comes to 3rd party lenses. I believe all of these 3 cameras are great and theres no need to grumble too much against the a6700 which is in my opinion the better choice if your mainly a content creator and not just focused on photography. Sony could have done better but the a6700 can go against the r7 and xs20.

Hey Kai I remembered all those gear reviews you did years ago, the one in particular that stood out was the a6000 it was revolutionary for mirrorless cameras at that time, I bought it after looking at your review and I still have it and it's still working really well. the a6700 likely has much better tech than the OG a6000 but they never updated the look and made it even bulkier nearing the size of an old DSLR. This camera for an apsc body is big and looks like an old camcorder from the 2000s tbh.

This camera at this price but full frame.. That would have blown me away.

it is actually a Sony FX30 on a diferent body. oriented more to video than photograhy.

It's a cheaper FX30 with better grip and viewfinder. It's good enough package for me. Not sure they'll ever make an A7000 really as they'd be encroaching A7 price by then.

11 fps is the same as the a6000 too not just the a6600. Seems like this should have got an update in 10 years.

"Sony's autofocus just works" As an A7iv owner, I'd say "detection and tracking work. Focusing sometimes does". You have to look at the stills to check the autofocus. The A6700 is better than the A7iv in this department, but it delivers only 85% of sharp pictures of moving subjects (Damien Bernal, Northrups).

I agree with your review. But keep in mind this camera has not gone up in price despite all the camera price inflation in the last 4 years, so I would say it’s a good deal. Plus, I think the main improvements are with video instead of photography, with reduced rolling shutter and better processing

As someone coming from the a6600 I definitely feel like the upgrades are pretty solid. The AI chip, the screen going to the side, the 4k 120, and the SD card finally being on the side are really helpful in my opinion. If I was committed to my a6600 or if it was my main camera, I'd probably definitely upgrade, but since I have another main character, and the a6600 is already great, there isn't a major reason to upgrade. Maybe in the bigger picture if you look at all Sony cameras this might not be the best camera, but if you strictly use the a6000 series then this is a great upgrade.

I think this camera might be a lot better than a lot of the review channels are making out. especially that chip. It's so tempting at such an affordable price. Nice channel as always. 1 card slot is a mistake even if the US channels are saying its not, you know the ones in bed with Sony.

Well, this sensor on the a6700 is a lot more than just a couple of megapixels. It's a backlit sensor that combined with the AI processor, creates highly detailed and virtually noiseless images, even in low light situations. The jump from the a6600 is huge. Add to that the improved autofocus and this camera is more than competitive.

6:50 Fuji is in trouble. If you say that you’ll still pick Sony over Fuji for stills because they have more compact lenses, then Fuji needs to rethink what they’re doing.

You are comparing it with a Fuji that costs $1000 more - I would expect a lot more for the $1000, in your words "Still isn't up there with the Sony". Think of the lenses you can have for $1000. It's not just 2mp more, it's a stacked sensor, the image quality has noticeably improved. Looks like you had fun getting your exercise for the day though! :)

I think here in the US we look at this sort of camera very differently. I see an A6700 as a solid third, fourth or fifth camera in a multicam setup because it has 10 bit and oversampling. Or as a solid second shooter camera if they don’t have a Sony. It’ll be easy to use because of the same batteries and easy to match in post thanks to 10 bit. Or as a gimbal camera with the 17-70 2.8, thanks to the flip out screen. Vlogging is out of style in America. It’s all talking head now. Vlogging can be visually overwhelming anyway with all the wobble and wide shots. Your honest opinion of a camera matters more to me than what you guys did when playing around with it.

With the multi port being removed, I'm wondering how you're supposed to attach remote shutter releases or intervelometers. Also, the buffer is still smaller than the a6500's, but that camera was ridiculous. Glad to see the SD slot is FINALLY faster and we FINALLY get USB-C, though. Tempted to grab one of these as an upgrade from my a6500.

For the price point if you are already a sony user this is an excellent option. If you are a wildlife or event photographer this fills a large gap. The A74 has a crop option but the resulting image size in pixels is too low. The 6700 as a second camera to my a74 is a near perfect fit. The combination of the crop factor and the fairly high pixel count is perfect for bird photography with big telephotos.

I went with the XH2s. I’ve went away from Fujifilm a handful of times and each time I’ve gravitated back to it, even though it does have its quirks there’s just something about it that makes me wanna pick up the camera

A great camera A Meh of an upgrade

I don't think this is a competitor for the X-T5 tbf, it's more Sony's answer to the XS-20. The X-T5 would compete with the A7 line.

Great video. My work camera is a fuji xh2. Great camera for stills and video. Recently I had the opportunity to use an a7iv for a gig and I kept comparing it to my xh2.. and really, xh2 far exceeds the capability of the a7iv in every way except, autofocus tracking and the obvious low light improvement of full frame. I purchased an a6700 as a travel camera, and im considering selling off my xh2 for a7iv... reasons: I love having a full frame camera for numerous reasons and a smaller less expensive travel camera. With sony, I can have that and only buy fe lenses. While always having similar results. Fuji xh2 8k pro res is absolutely incredible... but editing 4k is faster, meaning sony would give me enough and speed up my work flow, something I noticed after using the a7iv for a project. I hate to say it, but sony does make things simpler IMO. And these days, getting projects shot, edited and out quick is becoming more and more important.

Since I don't have one and the last camera had no viewfinder, I'm in it for the viewfinder. Besides I have all those E-mount lenses.

How does it compare to the Fuji S20 in terms of performance vs (same) price for the stated audience - hybrid shooters

Sony must bring back the onboard little flash, 250th flash sync speed, a joystick and a viewfinder as good as the Olympus EM5 mk3 and then it will be an upgrade

Very cool video. Nothing serious. I continue to like this format. Concerning the camera itself: deceiving. FPS /buffer /displays / 1* SD card (in 2023 really?) / top shutter speed remains at 1/4000th . Is this thing accepting at least a grip for vertical shooting ?

The work of becoming a great photographer or videographer has so little to do with the equipment :)...and I love watching your video :). Today, there is SO MUCH PARITY between camera brands, in terms of final image quality, that it's NOT the camera, it's YOUR knowledge and skill that makes the difference in composition, lighting, and if you are shooting video-of audio quality. That said, I love small and light, and the sony a6000 series, and now the A6700, has, in COMBO, the smallest and lightest bundle of camera body plus usable zoom lenses for travel: sony 18-135mm/sony 70-350mm. Go to a camera store, and handle the sony a6600/6700, with these two lenses, then compare the handling to the fuji and canon camera body and lenses. I'm so satisfied with the handling and comfort of the sony a6600/and now the a6700

Had an xt5 and the single point autofocus was so bad that I switched to the a6700.

Sony's pricing is disgusting US price of the FX30 is $1798. UK price is £2099 = $2667, 50% more! I know everyone does this, but it doesn't make it okay.

I'd have bought the A6700 if it had the Dynamic stabilization that's int eh ZV-E1.... which is a bit too pricey.
