I shot most of this review with Sony A7 IV and it didn't disappoint. This is a full frame camera that delivers Sony A7 SIII, Sony A1 level quality for much reasonable price. I think the first scene of this video should be enough to show you what a beast of a camera it is.

I used to follow a lot of tech reviewers who make very good reviews but over ages they developed strategies & methods that make their videos very routine and their channel content, although professional, looks more official than personal. I used to notice this in your channel as well until, until a while ago. But somewhere in recent past (unable to pinpoint when) I noticed that you switched to a more casual style of video making while still maintaining pro level of channel content. Thanks for keeping a charm around your channel and making some nice videos. There are still some improvements I can think of, like slowing down your speech when you get technical or at least put it as text for us to view and glance. Otherwise I love the fact that you kept a big camera review to under 20 minutes and without any unnecessary comparisons :)

Excellent review as always. Thank you. I own a Sony A1 and Sony A7s III. I hate that the didn't put the flip out screen on the A1. What I really like about this camera is the switch to go between stills, video and S&Q. I would love to see this on the A1. I also love the eye autofocus on animals and birds in video, remove focus breathing, the focus mapping features. These are not on either the A1 or A7s III and, like you, I hope Sony adds them in new firmware. I DO NOT LIKE the APS-C crop in 4K 60fps, as I like to use wide angles. That is the one feature that will probably stop me from buying this as a B-Camera. I also saw some footage from Matti Happoia that showed that the footage from the Sony A7 IV was much more detailed than the A7s III at 104,000 ISO, likely due to the oversampling. That was an eye-opener!

Amazing video as always! I'm just a little bummed out that they didn't add 4k 60p without the S35 crop as for myself being a run and gun hybrid shooter, 4k 60 is the sweet spot when there isn't speaking in which case I would use 24p which with the 7k oversample looks better than my siii. Anyways, what I'm saying is the 4k 60p crop is a deal breaker for me buying this as my A camera. If it had it I honestly would consider selling my siii and buy a couple of these for hybrid shooting.

True.. I am a Fuji shooter. I have an XT4.. I would not go to Sony if they can not provide 4K-60 without crop.. and A7S3 is way high in price..

Hi Faruk, great video, so subscribed. You gave me an insight to features and real world performance that most others didn't. Great review. I want one and have my order in for one of first batch in UK. Initially I wanted for great stills performance, but would like to start embracing video too, as a first step to start my 'convergence' journey. I know lots about stills work but very little about video. Some really cool features on this new model, especially focus breathing on selected Sony lenses. I'm lucky that I already own several GM and G optics that are already mapped for FB correction. Can't wait to take delivery and start practicing and learning more about video. That said I feel stills photography will remain my main priority. I sold my a7r4 last month, thinking I would buy an a1, but since then this new a74 launched and for my needs feel this newer a74 will have a better balance of features than my old a7r4 (I seldom ever needed 61Mb resolution). For sure it doesn't have quite the performance (notably speed) as the 'a1' but it costs less than half the price! What's not to like, save possibly absence of '4k60' without crop - a facility I never previously ever worried about, being a video novice? My revised plan is see how this new a74 fits into my needs as a stills photographer, whilst developing my abilities in video. Initially I will run alongside my a9. After living with both for 3 months or so I think I will be able to better understand if it's worth upgrading my a9 for the much more expensive (but faster and more capable) a1. On paper it looks a lot more performance for stills and sports use, but it's easy, albeit totally false, to think that better kit equates in any meaningful way with being a better photographer (or cinematographer).

Great info! I'm thinkng about joining team Sony. I mostly shoot talking head footage in 4k 30. I am debating between the a7IV and Cannon (R6?). My only hesitancy is that, side-by-side, the Cannon footage seems to have punchier, more vibrant colors and skin tones out of camera. However, colors look good in this video! Do you think that I can achieve Canon (or better) colors out of camera (without grading)? Thanks again!

Personally, I'm loving what I've seen so far. So much so that I've preordered it. I know I have to wait until the end of the year, but, it will be here before I know it. As far as rolling shutter goes...big whoop. It's an overblown topic, IMHO. When you were spinning around, I was watching you because you were the subject and you were talking. If I'm looking at the rolling shutter effects, then I'm not paying attention to what you're doing or saying. If you film in such a way that rolling shutter is prominent, then maybe videography is not your thing. Time to go back to your mom's basement. Great video. And I'm looking forward to my A7IV.

the 4k 60 crop is a bit of a kick in the ba**s.. but i'm thinking use HD 60/120fps and Topaz Labs Video Enhance to upscale it to 4k???

I do not care about 4k60p. But I would like video readout in 3:2 FF for Anamorphic. That would be great with new Sirui FF lineup with 1.6x squeeze ..... to get 2.4:1 ratio with most of the sensor area used.

Do you still have the Sony a7iv? If so have u used it much? What about the notorious overheating issues? I had high hopes for the a 7iv, but have held off from purchase because of those problems. Also the switch from a full frame camera to apsc crop senser in slow motion has not thrilled me. Question: Do you believe that Sony will issue a new S series camera within the next few months, a Sony a7Siv? 😎😎

The rolling shutter is annoying and the super 35 mode in 4k60 is just wrong. That I believe is a protection of the higher line cameras considering it has the same processor as the A1. But its a great camera.

Overall I think this a a win for Sony again and they did hold back on a few features but I think that’s to be expected not to hamper there other cameras. I’m more into photos than video so personally I’m waiting for the Sony A7RV. I want to print landscape images large and the current A7RIVa is high priced so I will wait.

the buffer size claim is basicly a lie, if you dont use cf express type a, the buffer is more like 20-50 depending on your sd card speed and compression
