SONY A7Cii First Look & Cinematic Settings!
[ Sony A7Cii: amzn.to/3tp9PPg ]
So the A7C2 arrived in the mail today, and after a month of watching Sony ambassadors who got the camera early, talk about it, I want to both see for myself, if the hype is real and to be one of the first non-ambassadors to show you first hand what this camera can do--
Now, after almost 2 years of talking about and pining for this camera, I finally have my hands on it, the Sony A7Cii, and yet, now I am actually faced with an unexpected dilemma, should I keep it when I already own, possibly a better compact camera…

I completely agree... And I'm also thankful that the zve1 came out first. However, I really wish that they made a A7CS instead with precisely the zve1's internals but with the A7Cii body. The body on it is special by comparison but the zve1's sensor, specs, and processor are way better for me...

I can't tell you how often I think about this question as I'm gearing up to do a full comparison video between the two, so I can learn in real time which camera I want to keep and which one I want to sell. Some days, I think definitively the zve1's superior image, lowlight performance, and stabilization make it the perfect all around camera... and then I do a photoshoot with the a7c2 and I think about losing the 33mp, and I get sad. It's a perfect hybrid... So I'm still fully unsure!

Bro, I recently bought a Samyang 18mm lens for my Sony A7C II, but unfortunately, the autofocus is really bad. While vlogging, it doesn't detect my face most of the time. I checked the firmware of the lens, and it's on version 3; I think the latest version is 8. I don't have a lens dock to update the lens. Could you please advise me? Would it be better to return the lens, or will updating the firmware make a difference?
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 9 месяцев назад
I'm sorry to hear that and it's something that seems to be an issue a lot of us are experiencing. I have and love the 18 and I used it in several of the shots and had the same problem however mostly only when prefocusing...with most of my pics were in focus. I personally think it's an issue that maybe both Sony and Samyang need to fix... And I hope they do. There's some forums on petal pixel of people discussing this, so more of us need to be vocal. I also don't have a dock to update my lenses but I might have to get one. Again, my guess is that Sony will put out an operational stability firmware soon... If you make the issues known!

But they are labeled correctly. Thanks for letting me know!!

I’m a videographer that enjoys photography. Should I get an A7Cii as a backup to my a7siii to makeup for the shortcomings up photo, or a zve1 for the stabilization/built in mic for travel? I’m getting rid of my A7iv (second camera) since it feels too much like my work camera; and would like to downsize my second camera for travel/hobby.
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 7 месяцев назад
That is a great question and I'm very much in a similar boat as my FX3 is my main camera and I initially had the A7C as my b cam/travel cam, so I presumed the A7Cii would just be an even better b-cam to upgrade to (which it is), but then the zve1 came out... And I have since realized how accustomed I am to the better dynamic range, dynamic stabilization, and better mic. Yet, the A7Cii has more megapixels, an EVF, and better ergonomics, so it's really difficult to decide which is better. I would also describe myself as a videographer who enjoys photography so in that I might lean towards the zve1, but I still own both with the intent of eventually selling one, but as of today, I really don't know which one! I apologize if that's not helpful, I don't think you could make a bad choice between the two though!

Thanks for this video. I've been considering getting the A7CII or the A7IV as my first Sony (and full-frame) camera. I'm mainly going to use it for hobbies like traveling. I do mostly photography. My concern with A7CII is that it's not a fully mechanical shutter. I'm afraid I might get banding or bokeh issues.
@BrianCatalano

@@humphreylitan thank you! And I get that concern, yet... It's not something that I've had any problems with (regarding banding) and not sure specifically what you mean by bokeh issues but it's also hard to know exactly how you shoot. If you had any reservations about the a7c2 then I'd say for sure get the a74... unless you really want that nominally smaller, more compact body. If thus is your first full frame Sony, I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised by either option and you can't make a bad choice. Yet, if I were you, I'd look for an open-box deal or a used a74!

@BrianCatalano Hahahaah, I was following the line of thought until the mini 4 hahahah. Funny lol. Do you think having the a74 and the r5 would be redundant? The A7s3 is still hanging around too, so I was thinking of selling it finally for the r5!
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 9 месяцев назад
@@francoismarc3 if it was me, I'd pick one bigger alpha body (get rid of the a7s3) and pick between a74 and R5... I don't think you need both. The R5 is amazing but maybe for me, more than I need. Yet, since you do take a lot of photos, I'd literally get rid of everything else and just have the a7rv and the zve1. You'd really get the best of both worlds and wouldn't need anything else... Unless, you were considering recording weddings or something and then I'd say, just get the fx3 then. Simply, the best vlogging and video camera is the zve1, the best photo cam is the a7r5... Upgrading from a zve10, I'm confused between a6700, Fx30, and a7cii. Dont want to spend more than what the a7cii is worth. I make music videos and take occasional photos. About 40% of my work is at night time in low light environments. Just wanted your opinion on what would be the best option between these three or if there are any other brand cameras you recommend.
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano Месяц назад
That's a great question and a difficult one, as there are a lot of solid options as that price point! For me, I'd have to consider shooting styles... If you are shooting short clips (not long, hour plus 4k 24fps) in mostly lowlight settings, I'd say seriously look at the Sony ZV-E1. It is the best lowlight camera of the bunch and they make cheap fans just in case you are worried about overheating: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DNF-mxKkQeg.html The next best option, for lowlight would be the A7Cii, which in some instances can outperform the ZV-E1/FX3, but it is fantastic in video and photo! Next would be the worst performing, the A6700/FX30 for lowlight, but they are still great compared to everything else on the market at that price point. Now, if you want a camera that is going to look like an impressive cinema camera for clients and will shoot all day because of its internal fan, the FX30 is that camera. I think the FX30 is the best valued camera for client work out there, but it's only real hang up is slightly worse lowlight performance and maybe some rolling shutter issues. It is hard to pick the best of the bunch here as it still depends on your style of shooting, but you won't be dissapointed as they all are huge upgrades to the ZV-E10. Hope that helps!

@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 6 месяцев назад
@@TRtheLoanGuy that's a great question...one I've been thinking about lately too. What I think the main advantages of the a6700 is that is almost $1000 cheaper with better frame rate options, a slightly better grip, and a lot more affordable and compact APSC lenses to choose from and for 90% of us, probably more than good enough! The advantages of the A7Cii is obviously that it's full frame, better lowlight performance, and better for photo, more MP and all. So, coming from the zve10, I might save my money and stick with APSC and the a6700. Yet, if you're really itching for full frame and don't mind that everything costs more money (and is bigger) then maybe rent it and see first! It's such a great picture profile that it's worth learning about. This might help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_oKWQTYZo4k.html So for me, my default picture profile is 11, S-Cinetone or slog3. Now, if I was trying to match colors to older cameras, I may shoot in Hlog3. Hope this helps... and feel free asking anything further if you need. Good luck!

@@linangoclan you're so welcome! No, pp7 (which I believe was slog2) is more comparable to slog3 (in flexible ISO) or could even feel somewhat related to hlog3 (pp10). Picture profile 11, s-cinetone is a just a very neutral, pleasing to the eye look that straight out of camera is good to go, no color grading or converting needed. If I were you, I'd keep it in s-cinetone for the majority of what you shoot and if you needed more dynamic range or lowlight performance, kick it into slog3 (flexible ISO mode). Does that make sense?

@@BrianCatalano Thanks, Brian! I was in flexible ISO to film but for some reason, my footage are very grainy and not as sharp. Do you by chance know why? :/
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 8 месяцев назад
@@linangoclan hello! The only reason your footage may have been grainy usually is if you were far outside the base ISOs, so that's why I stick to 800 or 3,200 only in flexible ISO mode or if I'm shooting in s-cinetone (PP11) which is usually my preferred way, I stay at either ISO 125 or 500. If it was really dark and even at the higher ISO and you tried to brighten it in post, it would probably get noisy as well, so that's why I shoot with the lut on and try to expose the scene correctly in real time. I'm just curious, but what are you shooting...and why not use s-cinetone? There's no right answer, I'm just wondering.

@BrianCatalano 9 месяцев назад
Hello! That's a great question and one I answered in the below video and I still believe it's true, especially now that the price has been reduced... As for lenses, that's a hard choice because focal length is very personal. If you want street photography, get a 35 f1.8 (Samyang or Sony)... If you want to vlog, get the Sony 20 f1.8, or cheaper 24mm f2.8... if you want a do it all lens, then look into a 24-70mm f2.8... if you want to do portraits, get a 50mm or 85mm... If you don't know, think about the kit lens as it's cheap and good (28-60mm). Hope that helps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QWD3kGYHkmo.html

By the way, do you take video requests? I would love to know your thoughts on the "low resolution sensor giving better low light performance" myth (or is it?). F-stoppers did an article a few years ago about how its a myth basically. bigger pixels, on a sensor, doesn't actually improve low light that much. What I've heard is that, the main reason for ZV-E1 and A7s3 has 12mp, is to give better rolling shutter, and uncropped 4k120fps. And the great low light performance is because of the sensor, and its native dual iso. What are your thoughts on this?
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 9 месяцев назад
Yes, that is exactly something I want to look into...and I think I read that same article. In fact, I was expecting much better lowlight performance out of the A7Cii but it may be something I am doing wrong... Or, that I go spoiled by how great the zve1 is. Yet, again I think you're right about the 12mp affecting the rolling shutter and higher frame rates and not necessarily the cleaner noise... Yet, it does also have a cleaner more sensitive image, so I don't know--worth testing further! What's interesting will be with the a93 which will have a higher mp and likely less rolling shutter because of how fast it's read out will be, so it will be interesting to also see how it's lowlight performance will be.

By no means any disrespect I’m just genuinely curious. What are your thoughts on the stabilization? The short clips of you and your kid you sprinkled throughout looks like the stabe is still pretty bad is why I ask.
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 9 месяцев назад
No disrespect taken at all and that's a great question...and frankly deserves a whole video on to itself. I only sprinkled in those clips to give a first glimpse into an extreme situation in active stabilization. The rest of the clips I also had active on (compared to the dynamic active in the zve1). I can say that the stabilization is greatly improved from the original A7C... but I have been spoiled by the zve1, so I will have to do more thorough comparisons. If you are shopping for a full frame compact hybrid, the A7Cii is amazing and the stabilization is better than most every other camera on the market except maybe the r62 (and s5ii but...). However, if you're shopping for the best compact video camera, it's easily the zve1. Yet, you think about the canon r8, which doesn't even have ibis, so I still the A7Cii is the best all around full frame hybrid.
@pdmelectric-ge3wn
@pdmelectric-ge3wn 9 месяцев назад
@@BrianCatalano Appreciate the thorough response! Funny you mention the R8 because I’m looking at that as a compact/travel option also. I rented it to try out and it’s hilarious that a camera without IBIS is better stabe than my a7iv. That’s only with a Canon lens that has IS though, but most do. Would be kind of a pain to have a different system and different lenses but might be kind of cool too.
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 9 месяцев назад
@@pdmelectric-ge3wn that's a really good point with R8 and Canon lenses. I also know the headache of switching systems, but also the excitement that you'd get too. (Not sure what you edit on but Resolve has really good post stabe which would help even more). I switched from Nikon awhile back and now, I don't think I'll switch again for the foreseeable future, but I really want to play with the Zf... Or the Lumix. I guess it's time to rent some cameras, but I will do more tests on the A7Cii... Yet, I can't imagine that active stabilization is dramatically different than the a74, so it may be worth considering a different system altogether.

After much deliberation I concluded that swapping my ZV-E1 for an a7CII would end in me loosing too many important features from the ZV-E1 just to get a higher megapixel sensor. Loosing Active Dynamic Stabilization and moving into a slightly larger body was a deal breaker for me. ZV-E1 wins for me for now until Active Dynamic Stabilization makes it into another future model. I also don't use EVFs and I love that the ZV-E1 does not have one.

However, after owning the original A7C which had a lot of new features compared to the a73, I can say the size is dramatically better if you travel a lot as I have done. The A7Cii also has improved grip as well, but again... You're right.
