Nice review man, keep up the work with the content, nice to see another A7iii youtuber growing! got my sub. That 85mm f1.4 walking test is enough of a reason for people to get the camera on its own!!!
Great video. A lot of the color looks in the shot are spot on. New subscriber. I've been on the fence because of Sony's color science and auto focus. I have a 1dxmii. Did you use canon or sony glass for this, including for the rack focus shot? I'm not an experience color grader. Is extensive color grading needed? I just know the basics in Premiere.
Great video. Just got the Sony and I love it too. To your video. Really not trying to be a troll. I liked your video. Cool shots and everything. But the audio man. It would have been so much better if you used a lav all the time. Anyways. Good video. You seem like a cool dude. Have a good day
Thank you for the comment! You don’t sound like a troll at all. I appreciate the honesty and tact in presenting it. I did want to show the differences in different audio styles on the camera but I was totally just being lazy on a few shots 😅 I’ll be sure to use a lav the whole video on future ones with this setup 👍🏼
Green Light Life keep doing what you’re doing. I’m a fan. 👌🏻 Like i said. I Just got the cam myself. I’m struggling with compatibility with not sigma lenses. I suppose I need to replace my lenses with Sony glass 🤷🏻♂️
Great video! Your comments were spot-on! The AF is amazing and built-in mic is surprisingly excellent quality. I “downgraded” from the a7rii and that was a major upgrade.
Just bought 1dxii. On top of this, i have a6500 and 5dm4. I like sony for run and gun, solo or 1 assist shooting style. It is lightweight even when mounted on a gimbal and puts lesser strain on the arm/body esp with all day shooting. But im very cautious when using it on conditions where theres mist, fog, sand, strong ocean /sea current as any moisture can get into the body and rust issue is well known. On the other hand, canon is a workhorse, good weather sealing and doesnt need to be babied but the weight drags me all day. For image quality, they are quite different. Sony for youtube, vlog styles and canon for cinematic, filmic look.
Very good review. Do u think it’s a good idea to use my canon lenses in this camera? The autofocus on video will works good? Or it’s better change my lenses to Sony lenses? Thanks a lot and congrats.
Yeah of course articulating screen isn't a big deal for you but for people like me who are in wheelchairs it matters a lot. Really pisses me off when people dismiss that... But thanks for the vid
Ah I’m sorry. It clearly wasn’t my intention. That was ignorant of me. I guess I just didn’t realize how the feature may help others in different situations. Thanks for your comment.
just want to thank you for a well thought out commentary... i have worked professionally with over 30 cameras over the past 20 years... and can't be more excited for this camera... appreciate the video take and also the production that went into the vid... also that it didn't drag on into infinity
Great review man! Wow! Just can you tell if this was filmed in 1080p or it's a 4k downscaled to 1080p? I Have some doubt about FHD quality... can you tell me something about this? I've seen a lot of FHD video on youtube and most of the time i didn't like them, but your clips look wonderful! Are the opening slow-motion clips filmed by the A7iii too? Thanks so much!
Yeah so everything in this video was shot at 1080p 24fps. Slow mo stuff was shot on this camera at 1080 in S&Q mode 120/24. I didn’t shoot anything in 4K for this video. And yeah, the opening shots were all on the A7iii with the 85mm 1.4 GM lens. Thanks for watching!
Subscribed!! Nice video and footage! The new color alone is fantastic in your video. I am still going to wait for the A7sIII specs before buying anything, I really want/need 60p 4k. Otherwise the A7III is a no brainer.
Really great video, thanks dude - subbed! I've just bought this camera (switched from Panasonic). I'm struggling with SLOG though- can you give any tips on how to expose it properly please? Also did you shoot the majority of the video in SLOG or with no picture profile? Cheers, Dan
Ah man, I’m pretty new to the Sony ecosystem so I wouldn’t feel comfortable giving exposure tips. There’s tons of good info out there though. I have heard overexposing like 1.5 stops is ideal but that was on an fs7 sensor so I’m not sure if that would apply here. As I get more comfortable with this, I’ll run some tests and do a video on my findings. Thanks for the support!
Thanks for your great review! Especially aiming at video! I’m starting a video promo biz here in New Zealand and have my sights on this camera. What are your thoughts on the low light capability for video? Thanks again!
The auto-focus discussion at 4:25 almost looked like it was shot in front of a green screen. That f/1.4 blurred background and super sharp focus are insane! Thanks for the point about the flip-screen vs gimbal, I never thought about that or heard anyone else mention it until now... it's a very good point.
Haha I thought the same thing about the mountain shot. It totally looked fake until I walked closer. You just don't see shots like that too often in real life. And thanks for noticing the gimbal argument!
I knew I was going to buy it eventually, but this video pushed me over the edge - just purchased the A7III! As someone who wants strong photography but leans heavily towards video, this was exactly what I wanted to see. Thanks for sharing, great review and wonderful cinematography!
Very useful review! Keep up the great work! One question. Were you using a filter around 5:20. I was concerned about the highlights in the background. No slide to you, just wondering about the way the camera responds.
Thank you! Yeah, I’m sure I was using a variable ND. I was filming all these scenes by myself and I got a little lazy going back and forth to check exposure haha. The camera definitely has a limited DR and struggles especially hard with harsh highlights but it’s sort of to be expected with a mirrorless. I also wasn’t shooting in a log profile at all. As long as you nail exposure pretty close in camera, it’s fine. You just don’t have much latitude for highlights in post.
In the Montana shot, there was a little too much blue in the shadows. RU-vid compression or oversight? The focus was stunning on that 85mm 1.4 though..
The GH5 isn't too far off from this... All depends on how you configure it and how you shoot but, this didn't really cause the rush to go out and buy this cam... Definitely gonna wait until they announce the A7SIII...
I am interested in this camera ( I am a GH4 user) I am working on two independent movies which I am producing, and I need to shoot some night scenes. Its hard to find good video reviews for A7iii and you've done an excellent review and helped make my mind up about buying this one.
Yeah I messed with the color on each clip in Lumetri but nothing beyond a little contrast and temp/tint stuff. I wanna learn more about cine4 and all the different options though!
Not a dumb question at all, man! All of the slow mo portions are done in camera. They’re shot in S&Q mode on my Sony a7iii which shoots at 120fps and conforms it to 24fps in camera.
FANTASTIC Review man! quick question: Is it true that the A7M3 export files in multiple folders? and, how long does a clip last? we are looking forward to see more from you. And yes, we have clicked the Sub button :)
Great review! I sold my 1dx2 for the A9. I agree with a lot of what you said. I prob shoot 40% video vs photo and I think the 1dx2 video quality still “looks” better because of the bit rate. The A9 blows it away for everything thing else photographically. Oh btw, you should try out Sony’s Xlr-k2m audio adapter which adds xlr inputs on the new A series cameras. Huge huge benefit for $500 in regards to audio.
Nice review man, subbed. I was wondering if you have experienced any overheating? My a6300 overheated even indoors. It's the one thing making me hesitant switching back to Sony.
I haven’t had it overheat at all. I’d say the longest it’s been on and pretty continuously recording would be about 2 hours though in a mostly controlled environment so I’ve never been out in the blistering heat for extended periods of time with it.
Btw, for slow mo, there is a trick increasing the quality files. You may go in the menu, put the camera to record 120fps (100 in Europe) and put 100as bitrate and the slow in post, but with higher bit rate. In S&Q dial itself its 60 the bit rate.
Ey man! Liked the video a lot. Just got myself an a7iii not long ago and its always good to get som knowledge from more experienced people :) You got yourself a new subscriber, hope to see more on this camera in the future :) Have a good one!
Very cool, bro. Thanks for checking out the channel. I'll definitely release a bunch more videos on this camera. Let me know if there is anything specific you'd like to see.
Thanks! I would like to see something about switching between regular recording with like 24fps and recording b-roll with higher fps. like do you use S&Q mode, and how is your buttons set up for videorecording? Just a thought :) Hope it makes scense, english is not my original language :D Have a good day!
Great review. I like that you don't hate on the non-touch screen and the non-flip out screen. Simplicity can make a product better and doing it right is tough and Sony may have done that here. I've been looking for my next camera for the last month. I had been leaning towards the A6500 simply because of size and you can bundle a hugely versatile 18-135 lens at many retailers right now. Now I'm thinking just due to the outstanding image quality of this A7iii I can put up with a bit more weight. :)
Interesting, maybe next time more in depth - visualize the dynamic range, some example for the sharpness for both ( video&photo). But that’s just what I would like to see/know. Anyway it’s nice to watch, not so much fancy annoying informations.
Thanks for the great video on this comparison I appreciate it and think I’m going to get the Sony over the 1dx. Can you compare 120 FPS quality cannon vs the Sony as far as codec speed does the Sony 120fps come as good as the 1DXii ? Thanks
What do you feel are the major differences between the a7iii and the gh5? I'm looking to do narrative short films (not necessarily controlling the light as I'm in the beginning of my amateur career still), documentary/travel vids, wedding shoots, and some vlogs (your kind-of style). Some advice and thoughts would be greatly appreciated! I'm not going to upgrade yet, but I want to start learning what professionals such as yourself consider to be good features/functions to look for. Thanks again, now I'm going to practice my skills and upgrade my knowledge :D Best, Danyal.
Does the screen turn off when using the HDMI port in 4k during record? The a7sii has this issue which is a big pain when wanting to use an external monitor along with viewing onboard display
Appreciate the review. Everything was well thought out. The only thing I can’t figure out is how you said all the information on the a73 on YT is for photography because I still haven’t found more than one. Basically 99% that I see is all video but I still appreciate it!
I'm 6d Mk 1 and GH4 oldschool filmmaker and I never used autofocus in video, but yesterday i had a chance to try A7III with kit lense and I was shocked how good autofocus is... I think i will finally replace my old 6d with this little beast. I still love my GH4 for ergonomics and what it can do with speedbooster and Canon glass (I have 5 Canon lenses), but now I really interested in a7III + 28mm f2.0. Amazing review, you have new subscriber!
Great Review! Thank you! I love This Camera so much. I did upload some 4K footage my self which i shot in Berlin, Germany and the sorrounding area. if someone wants to see a little more footage. :) btw. I subbed. Hope to see some more vids of you in the future!
Thank you! Ah man, that’s hard to answer in a short comment. Maybe I’ll make a video series on it or something. But basically just working on sets for years, learning and experiencing different styles. I’d say it was about 7 years working on other cinematographers sets before I started developing a solid style of my own and could really branch out and felt some demand for my style.
Fantastic review!! Your video popped up in my recommendations as I'm looking at either 2 of these or the Riii lol! You've got a new subscriber for sure. Cheers and happy shooting!
I was so impressed when I found out I could change the record button to the shutter button finally coming from an a7sii! But I agree this camera continues to impress me!!
Ah man, it really depends on what you're planning to shoot. I think a great focal length to start with is the 24-70. If you can afford it, the G Master version is a killer lens. It gives you enough range to do landscape and portrait style videos and it's an F2.8 so you can still utilize it in lower light situations.
