You make great points! And i ordered the xh2s! Question: do you really not think the xf16-55 is a bag of primes? Have you tried the sigma 18'50? Super curious to know your lens prefrences. I have the xf33 and the xf23. But i only take one on my family outings, and always wish i would have brought the other one!!! So mayeb a zoom might help.

You are going to love the X-H2S. Interesting that you bring up the Fuji 16-55 and ‘bag of primes’.. I have been pretty hard on this lens and it does not match the IQ of the new 1.4 lenses.. but I think I have been too harsh on it.. when I go back and look at some of my images with the X-H2S and 16-55 I find some VERY good and VERY sharp images. I will say that the 16-55 would be a PERFECT lens for Fuji to announce a Mark II for. I think I would buy it.. My lenses. I have the 14 2.8, 18 1.4 WR, 27 2.8 (OG and WR), and 33 1.4 WR. I kind of need a tele like the 70-300. I am selling the 14 as I don’t need it with the 18.. I am horrible at wide angle. You are so right on the 33/23.. some days my 33 is too tight and some days my 27 is too wide… I will never be without the 27 2.8 as I think it is the most ‘fun’ lens Fuji makes. AF isn’t great.. AF sounds like a rusty robot.. but it is just so fun.

I have a question to you! Thanks for the comparison first and foremost. When shooting my Sony A7iv in very dark environments above iso 6400, i get white dots in the shadows. The iso noise looks like stars at night. When trying to shoot with the lens cap on at 6400 or 12800 iso, I get shocking amounts of white dots everywhere in the image when zooming in a little. Is yours the same?

When you mention (at 24:21) that 16-55 f2.8 is not "a bag of primes" you are so right. I have been telling this to ppl for years. This lens is good, but it is heavy and images are just ok. Nothing can beat the looks of 35mm f1.4 or 56mm f1.2 primes. Nice and honest review btw, great job !
@TCinSoCal
@TCinSoCal Год назад
Thank you for your comment. I am familiar with Fuji primes and have been using the 16-55 for a few weeks now. Great lens but not a mind-blowing lens…not primes. I did some research.. well, Lenstip.com did the testing and if you look at their sharpness/resolution results for the Fuji 16-55 and 16-80 many would be surprised at the results. I know sharpness isn’t everything.. but looking objectively at their results it’s like the 16-80 hangs right in there with the 16-55 and the 80mm is gravy (while not being as bad as rest of the focal range.)
@pojemario

@@TCinSoCal I tested almost every prime in Fuji lineup in a quest to find my perfect "travel lens" and ended up with Sigma's new 30mm f1.4 prime. Light, compact, very fast and accurate AF, nice focal length, excellent image quality with bokeh next to original Fuji 35mm lens and it has very good price. I do not even miss the aperture ring as much I as I thought I would.
@professionalpotato4764
@professionalpotato4764 Год назад
Yeah, the 16-55 does beat out the 24-105 f/4, but it's nothing amazing like the 18/23 f1.4 LM versions. Also, at what cost? No OIS, short range, heavy, bulky. Even the 24-70 GMii is about the same weight. Fuji needs to refresh their entire line-up. A 10-24 f/2.8, 16-55 mk2, and 50-140 mk2. The Tamron 17-70 is a much better buy even though it might not be as sharp on the extreme long/wide ends.

Great video man, lots of good points! I’ve also really liked the look of the Fuji noise. I’m so used to de-noising my canon files that I think I need to start maybe leaving some of them alone. I never thought about remapping my white balance button but also never use it so that’s a great idea. I also never knew about swipe gestures, something else good to know. Nice real world comparison. Sounds like the X-H2s is a great fit for your use case of primarily photography. But those of us who shoot primarily video, Sony offers the more reliable AF in video mode from what I’ve seen. I’ve been a long time Fuji guy too, but bought the A74 recently. Your commentary on the colors is spot on - it’s taken me about a month with the Sony to get the colors right for my taste. Totally unrelated, but I’d recommend investing in some new audio gear if you plan on continuing adding content. Lots of room echo and volume was much too low. Lots of inexpensive options out there that would step up the audio quality. Great work!!

I had the a7iv and a7siii, now I have xh2s and xt4... and I can tell you that in video the AF level on the xh2s is similar to Sony. Hey thanks for that amazing realworld review. I really appreciate it! Maybe you can help me choose the right camera for me. I'm a hobby enthusiast hybrid shooter so I earn no money with it. At the moment I'm using the A6400 and have a few lenses for it. I have no general complains against that camera but I want do dive deeper into that hobby and I'm not sure if Sony APSC is the system to stay. So I'm thinking about switching to Fuji APSC or Sony FF for the long run. In that case Fuji XH2s or Sony A7 IV. On the photo side I'm doing all kind of stuff but mostly street (also at night)/travel, fashion and dance photography for video I'm using it a lot for talking head videos and sometimes for dance videos. Have you any good tips for me or need more information to maybe help me? General I overthink that decision a lot since weeks :D In fear of buying the wrong system. Also low light shooting is getting me nervous if the APSC is good enough for it :D. The whole world is screaming you'll have to buy FF :D... Thanks !
@TCinSoCal
@TCinSoCal Год назад
Thank you for your comment. My advice would be to 'map out' what lenses you would buy/use for your these purposes. The A7IV and X-H2S are both amazing cameras with amazing AF and could handle what you have described. Just know that if you need faster glass 2.8 or below.. you will be spending good bit of $$. For street at night you could get away with a prime such as the Fuji 33 1.4, Fuji 35 f2 or the Sony 50mm 2.5. I don't like the Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8 as it had more LoCA than I am OK with when shooting it open. Also, Lenstip.com rates the 50 2.5 better than the 55 1.8.. and if under 2.5 has LoCA.. why bother with the 55 IMO?? I am FAR from an expert on video but if in well-lit conditions I would think you could use one of the better zooms such as the Fuji 16-55 or Sony 24-105 f4 or 24-70 2.8 ($$). For travel.. for me.. it is all about going not heavy and not big. My 'travel' setup would be the 24-105 and maybe a prime in addition to the X100V. I am also trying out the Ricoh GR IIIx and love it.. but it isn't as 'durable' or WR like the X100V can be. Low light is different these days in that if you are shooting static subjects (cool diner with neon lights) you don't have to have FF if you have good IBIS. Now if things are moving and low-light.. that costs $$. You cannot go wrong, objectively, with either the A7IV or the X-H2S.. but I would map out your lens plan before pulling any triggers. Cheers!

Great video! Thanks so much for taking time to share your thoughts on these two systems. I'm strongly considering a switch to Fuji from my trusty Canon 5D IV kit. I've finally realized that my shooting needs are similar to yours - my primary goal is to capture family life and travel (95% still photos). It will be psychologically difficult to switch to an APS-C body, but your points about how well Fuji handles low-light and noise are just what I needed to hear. And I was a bit concerned about the A7 IV EVF - glad to hear that Fuji's is so much better. I think the X-H2S is a bit more than I need, but from what I'm reading about the anticipated specs of the X-H2, I think it may be the Goldilocks for my needs. One stupid question - which hand strap(s) do you recommend for Fuji? I've used the Peak Design Clutch with my Canon and really liked it, but I think having more of a wrist strap like yours will make me look less like a "pro" than I felt like I looked using the Canon. (I'm just a dadtographer...) Thanks again!
@TCinSoCal
@TCinSoCal Год назад
Thank you for your comment Mark. I was being a little hard on Sony for EVF but it really is worse than Nikon and Fuji. The Nikon Z6ii has a very good EVF but the X-H2S EVF is glorious. The X-H2S is more than I need as well but being a long-time Fuji shooter I had to try a Fuji body with competitive AF and I am glad I did. I will likely do another follow-up video but one thing I have found that I use with the X-H2S that I didn’t use on other bodies is the Electric Shutter or the Electric Front Curtain Shutter. I put the H2S in a mode that allows the camera to choose (I think EF below 1/200 then Mechanical, then ES.. ) and I like this as I have been shooting more ‘open’ with fast lenses lately. The black wrist strap I use is by Op-Tech and I like their products. It feels like wetsuit material and doesn’t stand out very much. One thing about the H2S is that it doesn’t come with metal rings for straps and it seems metal rings would possibly scratch the body. This is almost like being ‘forced’ to use Op-Tech/Peak type straps. Not a deal breaker for me but I did want to use a leather strap I have and will have to find a ‘solution’ if I want to do so.

Hi Mark, long time Fuji user here. For travel & kids / pets photography You may wanna try Fuji X-S10 also known as stripped down X-T4. It might suit you more since it is more compact and AF might satisfy your needs for less money. Of course, if money is no object - XH2s is a beast!
@markjsc
@markjsc Год назад
@@pojemario - Thanks for taking time to reply and I appreciate your recommendations. I've looked at both the X-T4 and X-S10 and they both seem very capable and would easily meet most of my needs (wants?). My impression of the different Fuji models may be a bit less-than-accurate, but it seems that the X-S10 is built similarly to Canon's consumer-grade bodies - at least as far as available buttons and dials (thinking the Rebel series). Coming from the Canon 5D IV, I see a huge value in having rich controls at my fingertips. It looks like the X-S10 is a bit watered down when it comes to the controls and some of the flagship-level features. My thought regarding the X-T4 is that it's last year's model. I usually try to buy the newest possible technology - right or wrong - because I prefer to keep electronics longer than many people. Even though it would be a great place to start, I think knowing that there's a newer (more powerful?) model would make me feel like I missed out. (First world problems, right?) The X-H2S was announced about the time I started seriously considering a system switch. I don't mind spending ~$2,500-$3,000 on a body. However, I will be very interested in seeing the specs of the X-H2 when it's hopefully announced in the next few months since I'll probably get more value from a slightly higher resolution than the faster framerate of the X-H2S. I'm aiming to have my next kit ready for a trip next June, so I may even hold my breath for a X-T5 announcement. Whatever I purchase, I plan to hang onto it for 5+ years. Thanks again for your reply and recommendations!

@@markjsc I completely understand you since I was a long time Canon 5DmkIV user, still have it, collecting dust. For work I switched to Canon R6, great camera, but this one is just a tool with no real passion I found only in Fuji cameras so far. Started with X-T30, just to have something for traveling that is not a mobile phone camera, to "feel" like a photographer while shooting. Long story short Fuji won me over completely, to the level that I traded in some of my old Canon gear for X-S10 and every since I got it I use it for PRO work too. Real estate, portraits, studio work (because X-S10 has tethering) and just love it, love it, love it. About XH2 that will be soon announced I have my doubts about the speed of the AF comparing to XH2s because XH2s has stacked sensor and this might be the fastest AF there is, non-stacked in XH2 might not have this performance, but we will soon see it. I wish you happy times with any future Fuji gear, I have tons of it - with great results ;)

Great video! You’re interests in photography are definitely in line with mine (95% family and travel). I bought a Sony A7iv for same reasons as you, eye autofocus, but I’m looking at possibly selling and buying a Fuji body, either X-H2S or X-T4. I did have 2 questions on what you were talking about in regards to colors and noise. I also notice and don’t like how my Sony tends to make everything orange when indoors (drives my wife crazy). We’re you saying you that the Fuji is better in that scenario and doesn’t make your kids orange? Second question, another reason I went Sony initially was low light performance, and you peaked my interest when talking about the low light performance of the Fuji. Just to clarify, were you saying you get the same useable high ISO with the Fuji as you do with The Sony? Or did you just mean you like the noise Fuji makes when compared to the Sony? Because if the Fuji can get close to the high ISO performance of the full frame Sony, then that would be a huge plus to me as well. Basically, I want to switch to Fuji as I prefer their colors and overall size of the system with lenses, etc. but the eye autofocus and low light is what pulled me to initially to Sony (Sounds like the X-H2S addressed both of those concerns, even over the X-T4, right). Which is why I found your video very helpful, thanks!

@TCinSoCal Год назад
Whew. Great questions. I may need a keyboard.. we are on vacation in Utah but it’s early morning. First, I would not want to be the guy that tells you to switch… it’s expensive. One option is to buy the Fuji used with a good return policy to test it. That’s what I often do. Second, I don’t think the eye AF/stickiness is as good with the X-T4. The H2S is a significant step up. It matches the A7IV (I’m using the new lenses..but have used 16-55 and will be testing with 16-80 soon. Gotta run.. will answer rest later.

Back from breakfast... noise.. note that I rarely shoot above 6400 and try not to go above 3200. FF is supposed to blow away crop sensor with noise but IMO it’s so close these days. I did feel that the noise structure of the Fuji was more appealing. Hard to describe but less ‘electric’. Note, I turn NR all the way off with my Fuji bodies as I prefer Fuji noise to ANY NR smearing. I can always apply a little NR in edits if needed. The orange look.. Kids game room is notorious for this. The Fuji handles the WB better and is easier to get back to a good/great WB/color IMO. I’ve found the Fuji sim Pro Neg Standard very good for this. I just tested and used PNS & reduced color temp and was happy with the colors. Note with kids, having a faster lens is crucial for indoors. Even f2 over f4 can allow you to up the SS without having to go crazy high with ISO. I TRY to use A priority for images of my kids but I’ve found they are even moving slightly when ‘not moving’. I often go S Priority to freeze them. One option to stay in A priority is to set the min SS to 1/200 or higher in one of the Auto-ISO settings. Fuji gives you 3. I never set ISO. I live in my 3 Auto-ISO modes and tweak as needed. You could even set one of the C1-C7 banks to an ‘indoor kids’ setting. I need to check to see if Auto-ISO settings change with C banks or if they apply across all C banks. Hope this helps.

I was a Sony A7iii shooter that thought about switching to Fuji, but I decided to upgrade to A7iv and I am pleased with the improvements. My grape with Fuji is that they haven't sorted out their lens and AF yet and there are not many 3rd party lenses to augment their deficiencies which is not the case with Sony! Sony only lacks a few exotic Canon RF lenses and 15-35/2.8. Besides that they're very much a complete package. Nice honest review and comparison. I think every system and brand has its pros and cons, just choose the one that you enjoy the most and suits your style. I got my XH2s a couple weeks ago, I already had an XT4 and also a Canon R6 system, so I have plenty lenses for both systems. But lately I have hardly picked up my R6 at all I reluctantly take it along on some wedding gigs but honestly the images when editing thru Capture one just don’t thrill me that much especially it being a FF sensor I was expecting more. In a lot of ways I prefer editing the Fuji raw files more especially the XH2s the images seem about half a stop brighter then XT4 but still about half a stop darker then the R6 when using exactly same exposure settings under same lighting conditions. So I even noticed the colour on the XH2s in extreme low light having slightly more colour fidelity then the XT4 and very comparable to the R6 although the XH2s I preferred the colour science better. I seriously believe these days with all the newest models since 2019, when it comes to specs we’re splitting hairs, for me it comes down to a few things mainly because of the type of work I do, number one is skin tones, colour science and ergonomics. and Fuji seems to do amazing in all those 3 areas for me. Doesn’t mean other brands are poor, it’s just my preference. Now that AF is a lot more reliable with the XH2s it’s going to be hard for me to keep my Canon system because that was the main reason I still kept onto it.

@TCinSoCal
@TCinSoCal Год назад
Several things here. First, the X-H2S is definitely more bulky than the X-S10. I have tried the X-S10 as well. Before switching try a few things… first try shooting in Shutter Priority at 1/250+.. as much as you can get away with without ISO breaking 3200. I used to try and take pics of my boys in A mode and found that I needed faster SS. Another option is to be in A priority but set one of your Auto ISO settings to max ISO 3200 and minimum shutter speed of 1/250. Also, use Continuous AF mode with a zone focusing set of squares with Face detect on. I think the X-S10 has the same AF as the X-T4 so it’s pretty good. Regarding switching subjects.. I never did that. I shoot using back button focus in AF-C so I would just release my finger from focus and then put the focus on the other subject then hold focus. You can do BBF with the X-S10 but the button is really small. I would try my first suggestion. The X-S10 is definitely better in the AF realm than the X-S10. It’s cheat mode in how well it grabs eyes/face but it could be more camera than you want/need as it is a beefy camera. Ironically, I have switched back to the Sony. I think the colors from the Fuji are slightly better but I just missed the ergonomics of the A7IV. That is so weird for me to say. The more I shot with the X-H2S the more I just couldn’t get my fingers to work the way they did on the Sony. I also could not find a walk around zoom lens that I liked as much as the Sony 24-105… and yes, I tried the 16-55. I often take shots of the same landscapes near our house and, to me, the detail I get from the A7IV and the Sony 24-105 was besting the Fuji… but it really came down to ergonomics. I have an X100V so I can always use that to get Fuji colors when I want them. Oh.. and in your menu setting. Set the AF mode to ‘All”.. by doing that when you turn the focus square to green you can use the rear command dial to go through all the AF area selections. You can easily go from single point to the Zone for the images of your family. Let me know how it goes.

@@TCinSoCal Thank you for all your insights. I shoot mostly in A Priority mode, and try to make sure SS doesn't get too low, but maybe I should increase that even further (I was keeping it at 100min). I also use also BBF and mostly continuous AF with Zone (with BBF, I can do single focus by releasing the button). My kid mostly looks down at whatever he plays with, and the moments where he looks up are fast - looks like it's too fast for the camera to grab the eye and focus 🙂even with the 33mm lens which is fast. I don't make it easy because I shoot often quite open , so the depth of field is quite shallow.

Warning: long comment and questions. Thanks in advance for reading. Thank you for your thoughts, I found them to be insightful, especially the shutter sound comparison! I stumbled across your video after debating whether I should upgrade from my X-T4 to an X-H2s (instead of to an X-T4), then maybe to an A7IV instead. I’m an enthusiast shooter, basically your cliche dad with new balance sneakers and a camera. I got into photography when I became a new father and enjoy the process. What drew me to the Fuji ecosystem was the dials, and the ease of pre-visualizing your exposure through the use of the top dials. I mostly shoot candid shots indoors and basically all family events. While I enjoy using the dials, I learned over a recent 2 week family trip that I found I started to prefer setting my exposure through the X-T4’s command dials instead of the top dials (I.e. I’ve locked the top dials to “C” and “T”). I guess I’ve evolved? I still however much prefer a physical aperture ring and not sure I’d enjoy setting aperture values through a command dial. My questions to you sir is why use a camera body in the X-T form factor if you’re going to disregard the the top dials? If disregarding the top dials, would I then prefer an X-H2s? What’s also compelling about the X-H2s are its advancements in eye autofocus. My hit rate of in focus shots with my moving toddler on the X-T4 is lackluster, and static adults are a basically a non-issue. Given the x-H2s’ price tag of $2,500, I began to wonder if the Sony A7IV would be the more “practical” buy? My Fuji lens collection is all native with 16-55 2.8, 55-200 var aperture, and 33 1.4. With Sony, I was eying the Sigma 28-70 given its size and price but unsure of it given lack of aperture ring. Not sure what is comparable in Sony for compact tele zoom for travel. Primes I’m eyeing the 35mm 1.8 and using that in crop mode to replicate a 50M prime. I think all this is to say is it worth the hassle of switching systems given the transaction costs of unloading lenses, etc. would you say I’m just overthinking it all and should just stick to the X-T4, even if I’m using the command dials? I read in the other comments that you ultimately went back to the A7IV given the ergonomics. Should I just stick to the ergonomics that I know now and stop questioning my life? I’m pretty happy with image quality, etc. just curious about the improved eye AF hit rate is all. This is my first real camera so I don’t have any experience with other brands. Thank you happy new year!

My latest shooting session in a marathon race, my X-T5 failed me with 80% soft-focus pictures when I turned the Face ON & Eye ON. With Face ON & Eye OFF, the rate is 69.1% in perfect focus. That's my experience for your concern about improved eye AF hit rate. So to answer your question. The XH2s comes with a stacked sensor, and it is overkill for shooting your toddler. So I suggest you try to turn the Eye Tracking OFF on your XT4 and test it again. I also shoot with A7C. The fullframe world is a trap for your budget. You can find the cheap Sony 50mm f1.8 and think: "well, that ƒ1.8 will give me a noise performance like f1.2 in Fuji". It does, but the thing you don't know is the Sony 50mm f1.8 focus is quite slow, like the 56f1.2. To take advantages of the Sony AF, you need some G lenses, or GM lenses. You may end up with only one body and one lense, because you cannot afford anything else.

I personally have never been able to get the quality/consistency of in-focus shots of my family/action from any X-T line body. I love them.. but I have given up trusting them for moving/eye detect type shots. The X-H2S will absolutely be more successful at getting these action/eye detect shots in focus...none will be perfect. IMO, the hit-rate of the X-H2S and the A7IV will be basically the same... that is from my use of both of these bodies with zoom and prime lenses. You already have VERY good Fuji glass with the 16-55 and 33 1.4. If you HAVE to have the BEST AF for action/eye detect with Fuji then the X-H2S is your body IMO. The A7IV is just as good.. but then you will need glass. I would avoid the 55 1.8 Zeiss and 35 1.8 Zeiss with Sony. There are better options. Honestly, before I spent any significant $ I would try some different settings with your current setup to see if you can get a better hit rate. I know that with my kids I used to try and stick to A Priority but learned I needed to stick to a much higher SS to get shots that didn't have blur from them moving. You can set this in your Fuji Auto-ISO settings. Start at 1/250 and then see how low you can go without blur. If you truly need tracking then you may have to upgrade.. or maybe someone reading this can offer some tips for better results with tracking AF with Fuji. IMO, the X-H2S broke the Fuji CAF barrier.. and most other Fuji bodies just don't lend themselves to success with CAF.

Thank you for your kind comments. Looks like we followed a similar path from Fuji to Sony. I LOVED the X-H1 but we know it wasn’t the best for face/eye detect and accuracy. The A7RIV you are using is a resolution beast so your files will be more manageable with the H2S but do know you lose some resolution/cropping ability…but ‘lose’ is a relative term here as the sensors in the A7IV & X-H2S are more than enough for amazing sharp images. On the 16-55.. great lens but do note it’s sharpness peaks around f5.6 and falls off after f11 so I personally shoot landscape type (not professional) shots around f7.1. Complaints.. - I wish switching through static subject/face detect/animal detect was as ‘easy’ as the A7IV but I’ve got it mapped pretty good. - strap rings seem to force us to use non-metal type attachments (Peak, Op-Tech). - I feel like I need to remember to turn face detect off when I want non-person scene metering .. nothing major IMO I think you will be very happy. I think the body/lens combo you chose will do well for capturing the type shots we take. One note.. you may do this already but I’ve found that while I prefer A priority for taking shots of my boys I sometimes have to go to S priority around 1/250 or so to get sharper results because kids are never truly still. Thank you for your feedback and time. Cheers!

This I hope can be fixed in firmware, because I think there is a delay in taking exposure, or back or front focus that don't show in the EVF. If, afterward, an image is unfocused, the focus system is defaulting somewhere. So far, against a Canon R6, the focus is behind the R6 with adapted EF lenses, but not but a huge margin, and it is the best focus system I have used in a Fujifilm and therefore the most usable Fujifilm camera for a wide variety of photography. Oh, and video colours and sharpness are amazing. Great review, but I just wanted to add that the discrepancy between EVF and post-shot reviewing likely is caused by camera mis-focus.

I mean when shooting, a thing looks in focus, or the box for eyes or face come up and the resulting shot is out of focus. I've not compared EVF playback against iPhone for sharpness. That is interesting. I used to shoot the Leica SL from 2015, which had the same EVF resolution. Partly for the more reliable auto focus. Definitely lost quite a few shots because they were too soft and unusable. However, another issue is that the RAF files from Fuji are a pain in the ass to edit in anything except Capture One. It’s funny that I came across this video… because I made the switch from an XH2S, XT4, and X100v to a Sony A7IV. I certainly agree with a lot of what you said, specifically about the XH2S EVF and noise. But man… maybe I use my cameras differently than you. While the XH2S is by far Fujifilm’s best APSC camera in virtually every category, especially AF; I felt it didn’t come even remotely close to the A7IV in the autofocus department. It’s nowhere near as sticky, it jumps all the time, it doesn’t acquire at further distances, it will often say the eye is acquired only to find out it’s not (I had so many photos where the focus was slightly behind the subject when using eye AF), etc. The gap only seemed widened with some of the latest GM lenses such as the 70-200 GMII and 50 1.4; even when compared against the Fuji red badges and latest LM 18, 33, etc. Don’t get me wrong, the Fuji XH2S eye/face AF was good. But man, like you said… the Sony A7IV is just voodoo. I just can’t ever see myself picking up the XH2S over the A7IV for professional portrait work (or even to shoot my kids). What’s crazy is, the A7IV is one of Sony’s worst modern cameras when it comes to AF and calculations (A7RV, A1, A9II/A9III, etc). With that said, I do miss a lot about the XH2S. I do miss the Fujifilm colors for my personal stuff. I really miss the stacked sensor and readout speed; so much so, that I am considering picking up a Sony A1 to fill that void (plus I have other excuses to get one). And for a time, I really missed the XH2S’s video features, specifically the ability to shoot ProRes internal and 6.2K open-gate. I never got the chance to test out RAW external, which is probably a good thing since I’m using my A7IV with a Ninja now… and it probably would feel lackluster. Anyways, thought I’d share my experience as well. You honestly can’t go wrong either way. That’s the nice thing about being alive right now, so many great camera/lens choices!

Thank you! I don't review a lot of things but do when I feel like I can contribute.. especially versus just the run and gun .. got the camera to 'review' reviews. Since this review I have switched back to the A7IV... and the main reason being the ergonomics and a TAD more resolution. There are things I take shots of every day and I found the A7IV and 24-105 to be a bit sharper overall than my Fuji combos. I also wasn't using the crazy fast fps of the X-H2S. Both are amazing.. I just like the fit/layout of the A7IV better. I have used the 16-80 and I think it's a very good lens. If you look at the Lenstip.com reviews of the lens the 16-80 holds its own in resolution against the mighty 16-55 and is WAY lighter. I am actually selling a 16-80.. and likely would have sold it already if I wasn't 1000% honest.. as the lens does have mild zoom creep when over 23mm and held vertically facing down. It doesn't creep at slight angles.. just straight down... and not under 23mm. Oh well. someone will eventually grab it and enjoy it. For me, I didn't NEED 2.8 enough to justify the weight of the 16-55 over the 16-80.. and 56-80 was 'free'. Thank you for your comments.

The noise is one reason I may move away from FF cameras for the first time ever. I've always used Canon but I don't even like going above 3200 whereas i've seen a Fuji at 10k and i'm not bothered by it. Fuji has a more pleasing filmic noise (which makes sense cuz it's Fuji and they have film sims too) and I love how film looks, whereas Canon/Sony/etc noise looks like video noise or as I like to refer to it as "confetti" noise. I may finally try Fuji cuz altho I lose a little bit of the ease in bokeh at times (or all the times since I always shoot wide open lol) I get those beautiful default starting points with film sims, the noise is infinitely more pleasing to where I almost want it in shots, and that 14 stops of dynamic range in video sounds amazing for video. Or I may wait for the XT5, also considering that.

I was never a FF person until trying Sony. For my type of shooting FF isn’t a significant leap. In some ways it was a step back in that I lost reach. ‘Confetti’ is a great way to describe the noise. Historically, I’ve not been a wide open shooter.. but I’ve been setting the X-H2S to EF/M/ES shutter selection and going wide open and having fun. It could just be me but I did have an issue trying to shoot my wife wide open with strong (sun) backlight.. it wanted to blow out the highlights.. could be the face detect ‘overpowering’ metering the scene. Fuji disables metering mode selection when face/eye detect is enabled. Seems ok until you have to note to turn it off. Also, Lightroom is missing many of the new film simulations for X-H2S. I, and others, have been bugging Fuji and Adobe about this. It’s like Adobe is using film simulations from the X-H1. Definitely some quirks to the X-H2S & I plan to do a video about what I’ve found.. one being the strap ring ‘hooks’. WTH?.. it’s like Fuji assumed we would use non-metal type strap attachments. Fuji has a base ISO of 160, so in the same conditions you will be shooting two thirds of a stop higher ISO to get the same exposure. So 10000 ISO on Fuji = 6400 ISO on Sony (FF or APS-C, doesn't matter). So if you're comparing, let's say, the noise levels of 3200 ISO on Fuji to 3200 on Sony, you are giving the Fuji two thirds of a stop advantage. To make it fair you should be comparing 3200 ISO on Fuji to 2000 ISO on Sony.

I’m a stills shooter and my ‘review’ is from that perspective. Thank you for your comment.

@@TCinSoCal Yep, that was clear from your review. And FWIW I still have a Fuji Xt20 and a few lenses. I like Fuji too but AF has always been a frustration

@@pauldewar626 Fuji AF frustration is a real thing. I could say I’d test the AF of the X-H2S but I don’t think I bring anything to the table. The X-H2S will become my filming camera for videos like these as the X100V was defiantly a PITA.. but that isn’t the V’s forte either.

Personally, I'm sad to look at comparisons of pictures from FF cameras versus APS-C cameras (I have a 32-inch 4K 10-bit professional display). Here is a comparison video Sony A7IV vs Fuji X-H2S: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B0z5det6Gx0.html. Only a blind person can fail to see the big difference in image clarity at 3:44 and the big difference in color reproduction at 4:04 of this video. No one can defeat physics - an elephant cannot jump like a squirrel. Both in the dynamic range and in noise, the FF will always be far ahead of the APS-C matrix. By God, I don’t understand why, for the same price, choose APS-C instead of FF. I watched a video comparing Sony A7 III and Sony A7 IV and there all these differences are barely distinguishable. The Fujifilm X-H2 with a 40-megapixel sensor has just come out and I am more than sure that the 33-megapixel Sony will be a cut above not only in terms of picture clarity, but also in all the indicators that I indicated above in this post. I'm sure that Sony A7 IV video in 4K will be sharper than 8K video on Fuji X-H2 with proper Sony settings.

Comparing cameras based on nothing more than sensor size is like comparing two cars based on nothing more than the size of the engine. There’s more to choosing a tool than the size of a sensor. For example, if you want high fps, the Sonys just don’t do it unless you spend almost $7k. That’s not to say Sonys are bad, just different tools for different needs.

The “image clarity” you are seeing there has nothing to do with the sensor size but the lenses used. The 24-70mm f2.8 GM II is one of the sharpest standard zoom lenses available on the market and it costs more than twice as much as the much older XF 16-55mm f2.8 on the Fuji. That is where the extra clarity is coming from.
