I have the A1 and the A7RV. I regularly shoot dance rehearsals and performances, usually under available rehearsal studio lighting and stage lighting. Normally, I output the camera's HDMI feed to an Atomos Ninja V in ProRes format (the Ninja V does not yet support RAW output from the A7RV). So far, I have shot for almost a month with the A7RV and am impressed with the video quality. Autofocus tracking gives the A1 a run for its money - the A1 does seem to nail eye autofocus better, but the A7RV is pretty close, sticking to the face and body of even rapidly moving subjects. The A7RV does beat the A1 in color accuracy using AWB and the manual color temperature presets. Colors are more neutral, while the A1 is noticeably warmer than the A7RV. An excellent camera for folks who find the A1 a bit pricey. You can purchase the A7RV with either a 16-35 GM or 24-70 II GM for the price of an A1 body.

How is the rolling shutter performance in standard video of 24/30/60 fps in 4k mate?

@@themarksmanABP The only real problem I have had with either camera is that the rolling shutter picks up the flicker of LED stage lighting. Almost every venue has switched to LED lights over the past few years as they are less expensive to purchase and maintain than traditional incandescent lighting. The flicker can be fixed somewhat in post, but it is really annoying sometimes.

I have been using a Sony 200-600 on my A7R3 for 5 years and have been doing ok with it for BIF. I have been searching, daily, for weeks to see someong actually talk about or demonstrating how well the A7R5 handles that situation. Most cameras these days can easily handle focusing on animals or birds sitting still or walking around. There is nothing quite as challenging as birds in flight. I don't shoot video at all with my big camera, so far 🙂 I also find that 10fps in compressed raw is adequate. Yes, I know that the A1 is best for that, but it costs $9600CDN, here in Canada.

Sony A7R series has always been a photo centric camera, not a pure hybrid or video centric camera. If the individual wanted a bit of both, their mainline (A7 series) has that covered. If you wanted a video centric camera, that does decent photos, then there is the A7S series. If you're main focus is video with rare or no photo needs, the the Sony FX series is for you. FX3 (fullframe) FX30 (APS-C) are great video cameras.

My "old" a7rii still keeps giving me solid performance and 42 megapixels for wildlife photography. I don't really need 20 or 30fps, so the a7rV might be the ticket for 2023.

For a future upgrade im tossing up between the A1 and A7R V, You say the A7R V is the best for stills, which in my opinion is true for still subjects but keep in mind its only 6fps in uncompressed raw and for fast action there is viewfinder blackout and we are not sure how fast AF is compared to the A1, so for moving subjects the A1 will come out on top.

Yea those are definitely good things to keep in mind as well! I guess for me I don’t really mind the blackout viewfinder, and 6 fps isn’t top of the line you’re right, but in all reality I guess personally I never find myself wanting more than that except in very particular scenarios, and so otherwise, those incredibly high fps on the flagships of each brand almost just become a lot of extra hassle for me… BUT that’s just my opinion and you’re still right about it being technically worse ☺️ And you’re right we haven’t gotten to see good tests yet for wildlife specific, but from what I have seen it does seem pretty phenomenal and next level from the A1 even, you saw the short example that I included from Jason, Gerald Undone even took it out and did the same and it seemed spot on… but only time will tell as we will have to see true “wildlife photographers” go out and show us

Interesting video. I think the video criticism is fair BUT....the R cameras are 90% stills photography with video capability tacked on. So clearly if video is vital for you then u should look at the S range.

Most definitely, that’s why at the end of the video I explain why for me it didnt work but for a purely photo oriented person I think it’s ideal 🙌🏻

I have a Canon R7 on the way. I'm used to shooting with all types of sensor sizes. I really missed the benefits of shooting with a crop sensor. My S1, a camera I adore was so heavy with the Sigma 150-600 and AF hit rate was so low that I simply needed to use a different tool. The R7 has incredible auto focus, high burst rates and that amazing 1.6x crop factor meaning I can have a lightweight highly efficient system that weighs much less than a full frame camera. I feel this gives me a tactical advantage in the field. I don't see the A7RV as a wildlife camera, I think the next A9 will be the one to watch from Sony for wildlife.

Interesting perspective! Thanks for sharing. Yea I think it depends what level of wildlife photographer you are as well... for the top-end professionals that really can make use of every feature and are dedicated to the highest quality of image no matter the weight or price it's literally top of the line. But for someone more amateur or hobbyist that doesn't want to lug around the extra weight or spend the extra money, it may not be the right choice. The R7 is fantastic for that person like you said and I think it's a great option.

@@officialwilder Not sure if I'm going crazy but my reply seems to have disappeared. I'm not a hater bud, I'm a huge fan of your content. I just don't feel the A7RV is a great choice for wildlife. The A9 cams were always the sports/ wildlife cams. I'm a passionate hobbyist when it comes to wildlife but I'm a professional photographer/ videographer and formerly taught photography for a camera shop in the UK (my nerdy old YT channel may belay these facts.lol) anyways big, fan keep up the good work. 👍

Really weird comment imo. 'Tactical advantage'? What does that mean? Why don't you see the A7RV as a wildlife camera? What is a wildlife camera? It has fast shooting, amazing autofocus, great IBIS and access to the E mount lenses. I genuinely want to know why its not a wildlife camera?

@@bluecheese20401 Nothing weird about it. I have zero doubts that many wildlife photographers will choose the A7RV and get amazing shots and that is their preference. However for myself I find the burst rate of around 6 or 7 shots a second too slugish and somewhat negates the resoultion. As far as tactical advantage I simply mean I can carry lighter equipment allowing me to be more mobile. I enjoy hiking so I have to balance out my hiking kit with my camera kit. Using a crop sensor also means I can benefit from the crop factor again a tacticle decision specific to my needs. At a similar budget I think the R5 would be a better choice, amazing AF, subject tracking and a full frame 45mp sensor etc I would also prefer the Sony A9II, 24mp but blazing burst rate and blackout free shooting. Just because a camera is right for you doesn't make it right for someone else nore do their choices make them any less "professional" or "weird". Get what's right for you and be happy.

I had a chance to check out the A7RV at Hunt’s Pro Photo in Massachusetts this past weekend! One of the Sony reps was there. Screen is pretty awesome! I’m excited to see it trickle down into their other bodies. A7V,A7s4 etc. Curious as a wildlife photographer what your thoughts are…if it would benefit Sony to put out a high megapixel APSC camera but in one of their full frame style bodies? I mean you get the APSC mode in the A7RV but maybe as a wildlife camera at a fraction of the cost.

That’s awesome you got to get hands on with it! 🙌🏻 I think there is definitely a market to do what you said to it. However, with Sony’s status and image that they kind of like to keep up I’m not sure they would go for it anytime soon. But I think the popularity of a camera like the recent APSC Canon R7 proves that there is a market for it.

There is a lot to like in this video, but I'm disappointed that it's based on other people's reviews. I'm still waiting for somebody to actually take the A7R V to the field and do bird photography. We need to know how the AI autofocus performs compared to the A1 in real-life situations, and what is possible with the low burst rate.

I'm a Sony APS-C user (a6600) and I really love it, I don't feel like I want to get a FF instead, but Sony wants me to do that. :D Sony APS-Cs are great cameras, I just don't understand why they don't put bird eye af at least into the flagship aps-c. Just like the A7III got animal eye af with a firmware. I don't think that Sony aps-cs are worse than Fuji or OM-system...Come on Sony, Give me that bird eye af! I don't want to buy an A7IV to have it. I can't afford it and anyway, I prefer APS-C. As an APS-C user I feel a bit neglected by Sony. Sorry that I'm complaining... :D

Current A7IV wildlife user. Do you think it’s worth upgrading to A7RV ?? Or continue to save up for the Sony A1..? I was hoping the A7RV would have closer to 20 fps. But that big sensor I guess it asking too much ? Or pushing at the A1 too much, feature wise ?

Yea that's a great question... personally, if you don't do film work I would take the A7RV over the A1. However, if you are looking to capture video I think you're in the same boat as me in that you might not want to get the A7RV and rather save up for the A1. The A7RV is literally on the same level in photo ability in almost everyway however (except that fps) so I'd just get the A7RV if you solely shoot photos. In comparison to the A7RIV that's a hard question. I guess if I was thinking from the perspective of someone limited on a budget it may/may not be worth the upgrade as undoubtably it's better... but it's also only marginally better (like 15-20%). But if budget is not of concern for you, then 100% I would say go for the A7RV upgrade.

Personally I’d say it’s better in pretty much everyway except fps and low light… but that’s also my perspective! And personally, I’d still go for the A7RV rather than the A9II. I’m not up to date on the rumors of the A9III so I can’t speak to that though!

Just a final note, many pro's will shoot APS-C (at some expense to low light and DoF) due to pixel density. In order for a full frame to have the same FoV as an APS-C (using the same focal distance and MP for simplicity) the user will have to apply a 1.5x crop in post. E.g. APS-C 600mm x 1.5x crop factor = 900mm at 30mp vs FF 600mm x 1.5x crop in post = 900mm at 20mp. A 30% reduction in megapixels. In this scenario the crop sensor could apply the same 1.5x crop in post and maintain a 1.5x increased FoV at 20mp. The Sony A7RV has ridiculous amount of megapixels so I think would still edge out everything apart from the Fujifilm XH2. But The Fujifilm and Canon R7 have much faster burst rates so the sensor resolution is negated by the relativley slow burst modes. All this is to say, that there is currently no one glove fits all solution to wildlife photography. As you have said in previous videos it's more important to invest in bettering oneself then to constantly be purchasing new gear. Much respect!

Have you seen if anyone have tried it in low light situation, 61 mp should be to good? and if I don't remember wrong it "only" shoots 6fps raw and 10 fps in compressed raw? if it could shoot 20 fps, it would be a no-brainer I think! But then the price would get closer to an A1.

I have seen others try it in low light... but not Wildlife Photography low light unfortunately (I spent a long time looking). It does seem to hold up well in low light but obviously with how high the sensor is it isn't top class. From the files I've seen I would feel comfortable at 6400 ISO easy, but maybe even up to 12800 in a pinch. The fps is slower than the A1 you're right! But at the same time, 20 fps and up feels like overkill to me sometimes haha

And that improvements cost only 5k,lol...just take second hand A9,AIV,or AIV5,and ur good to go with minor drawbacks and 2.5k in pocket for some great lens like 200-600 sony...

Since the R5s, I think Canon has the most advanced autofocus system on the planet. Look at the autofocus performance of Canon's entry-level R10.

Canon definitely has some pretty solid autofocus too! It’s so hard to be objective with AF as it’s so hard to measure… personally I think Sony still comes out slightly on top with Canon an immediate second, but everyone else is definitely struggling to catch up to them two
