06:46 - 07:06 🤣 I left a couple of product shots in there without music and VO, I must be not used to working on videos longer than 10 mins! 😆 CORRECTION Thanks Curtis Watson for noting that the settings (as mentioned by Dpreview) can be saved when switching from video to stills mode unlike I mentioned at 04:50
For me I thought you we're going to transition about testing the mic of the camera given the silence of that scene plus clips of you attaching the mic to it. It's alright. :)
Love seeing cameras pushed to the level they're at right now. Although I'm not a Sony shooter, the entire industry really should thank Sony for pushing the industry. The specs here are crazy. The clip in the sony promo video of the dirt biker under the moon and stars is insane. Looking forward to seeing what people produce with this beast.
@@maximilianharper8573 that's primarily because of the phase detection points, under certain ambient lighting conditions they will cause some banding, this isn't a Sony issue though, my canon Eos R had the same problem in both stills and video, and I suspect Nikon z series has the same issue as well
They will.... 10 years later when 8K TVs will also find some affordable pricing and they will look like absolute shit because they will be 8-bit 16.7Mil colors enabled and will offer 200 nits of brightness.
Question for Lok and Kai, 1.Who is this 12MP Camera for. 2.What Purpose does this serve to the buyer over the Sony A7 III or Nikon Z6. 3. If photo taking is stupid on this (being 12MP) sensor why should we pay so much money for it. 4. If it Shoots 4k. Then How? Because the Sensor is 12MP. 5.Since Sensor is 12MP with 8 Micron pixels similarly How Arri Alexa has huge micron pixels, why does Sony A7S III Matter anyhow? Big Micron = bigger photosites but how does it matter to consumer because the sensor is 12MP.
@@mrvk699 MP count doesn't matter unless you're enlarging photos to print, I've seen clear pictures coming out of this sensor that are well usable, however, the alpha7S line is geared towards low light video recording. The lower megapixel count design helps with less noise at high ISO.
@@Vaigue But even if it's for low light video shooters. Doesn't the 12MP Sensor be a Limitation. Especially because the competition has 20.2MP(Z6) / 24MP(Sony) / 32MP (Canon)
@@mrvk699 check out potato jets video on it, he explains why the sensor is pretty great and he also goes into detail about the 10bit Slog3 modes for video that offers video like those big Sony cinema cameras.
@@Vaigue seen it man. But I think these 12MP sensor cameras are like Phone Camera but on Heavy Steroids. E.g. Imagine a phone with a 35mm full frame sensor with only 12MP Camera and 8 Micron size Pixels. Great Concept. It's like Sony is sureforward looking ahead of putting these sensors in an Android Phone 5-10 years from now considering 8 Micron Meter pixels.
At least u can watch it !! back in the 80's there is no RU-vid & u have not seen directors or filmmakers walking in the street & explain about their expensive gear ! 😁
no pls dont do 8k downsampling. the video quality will look like shit. for example the a7iii 6k downsampling requires alot more compression hence losing alot of a detail.
@@3firstnames903 that would be a good objective test to see what the quality improvement is, and is it worth the extra effort if in final rendering it is all lost anyway (youtube/facebook)
All I have to say is THANK GOODNESS for a Full Size HDMI port! It also looks to be easily replaceable if you look at the close-up of it and the two small phillips-head screws holding it in place. 👍
They should be able to do this with a firmware update I hope. Still doesn't look great but a huge improvement. Hoping with Sony opening up their software that someone will make a better interface for it.
I use primarily Canon and Sony, but also Nikon and Fuji. Can't say I see a menu system as something to get my knickers in a twist about, you just have to adapt. I think Sony are unfairly targeted in this regard, like people are just trying so hard to find something to hate on them about. I get it, the menus aren't intuitive, but neither was my Canon when I first picked it up etc etc. Sorry, Cody, not having a go at you personally.
i wanted to change my gh5 or bmpcc4k but every time i see a new camera lately i just can't see such huge improvements. for 4k euros you get finally a 10bit 422 and the flip screen .
I sold out of my Gh5 and got rid of all my m4/3 stuff to get more depth of field, functional autofocus for gimbal work and better lowlight. Gh5 is still an awesome camera and I loved the menus but it feels limiting after a while
I agree the gh5 was ahead of it's time. Now we just need the gh6 to have solid autofocus and 4k 120 fps. Speaking of, you think we'll get the gh6 soon?
How many people actually shoot 2 hours straight? The battery certainly would die out well before the 120 minutes. And most final version videos are composed of multiple edited short clips. So the notion of being able to shoot 120 minutes is a moot point.
@@msbrownbeast umm us wedding photographers/videographers? You as the photographer/videographer have very little control when it comes time when doing a wedding, you can voice your opinion but ultimately it nice to be able to record for quite a while, especially when It comes to capturing spontaneous, candid moments
As a Sony user, I don't understand why people complaining about the menu system. If you are in the field going through the menu to changed your settings, you already lost the moment. There's c1, c2, c3, c4, 1, 2, m1, m2, m3, m4. You can set each of this to your liking. C1 can be program 4k pp1, c2 can 4k pp10, c3 1080 pp1, c4 stills, m1, m2, 1, 2 etc... You don't have to go through the menu in the field, just pushed or turned the knob to your preprogrammed settings, it's fast, easier then standing there going through the menu.
Love how this guy shoots in spots in greater London I know and recognise well Really helps me judge the camera better as I can compare his stuff to what I've got in the past from my cameras
Thank you so much for splitting up the sections as i didn't see the need to see info on the display and new menu for the 8529843 time today. Awesome info as always and thanks again!
Ru-oh... dust on a sensor is easily removed by a rocket blower. Debris or heaven forbid, a finger on the shutter can pretty much render the whole camera useless until repaired. The sensor (which is protected by a filter anyway) is far less sensitive than the shutter.
@@ashic I've been told that you shouldn't use a rocket blower on the sensor, because of the delicate parts in there like the shutter. Just what I have been told.
@@Reddepex this is wrong. There are filters in front of the sensor, it's not directly exposed. Rocket blowers are pretty much the standard way of cleaning the sensor. Only if that doesn't work, you should use a sensor swab. That means actually touching the surface. The rocket blower should be of good quality so that a) it doesn't draw in dust and spray it on the sensor, and b) when squeezed the nozzle doesn't flap about, as you might end up having the nozzle poke the sensor.
@@Reddepex yes, the shutter blades are fragile. But if they're open (like on the Sonys), then you don't blow on them with a rocket blower. On the Canons, if you intend to clean the sensor, you need to make sure the shutter is open before using the blower.
Hi Kai! I have the A7riii and I hate the fact that every time I connect an external monitor for shoots, it turns the AF Face detection off. Not talking about atmos external recorder. Just a regular external monitor. Do you know if they fixed this issue on the A7siii ?

Is this too good of a camera for a beginner? I’m completely new to photography, but am looking for camera recommendations since about about to move to Hawaii. I’ve had multiple friends tell me to look into this one and so far I love it. Any advice?
Dpreview showed that you can control which settings are held when switching between photos and video, did you look into that? I'm not sure if your complaint about it is already resolved but hidden in the settings
Hey dude! Checking in from Mongolia... do you think we should wait for Black Friday deals on the A7iii or just go ahead and pinch it off the shelf now?
I think everyone is praising it, but it's... well.... sort of pointless on a video camera. Now when it migrates over to the next A7R, it'll make a bigger splash.
"Just works"? I suppose that's fine if you're a pro with money on the line. But what about the enthusiast market that just want to drone on about specs? 😅
hey, nice video. i have a question. You wear glasses for myopia? How much of a minus? Do you have troubles by taking pictures? Can myopia be a problem for a photographer? Thanks
Hi Kai, any chance of doing a review of the Leica S Typ 007. Less than 5 hands on reviews on You Tube & Google combined. Do you think it is still worth buying or is it redundant?
I currently have a Sony a6300 and I’m looking for the best Sony camera with a nice combo of quality photo/video. Would you recommend this camera? I’m more on the photography side... Thanks
What an amazing review! One of my daily gripes with otherwise lush a7sii was not being able to adjust monitor levels. So mid shoot I'm stuck with whatever volume I have. I hate that. Any update on a7sii? or do we still have to stop recording, switch to playback mode, play a video, open playback settings, click volume, lower it, switch back to camera mode, and start recording again?
meanwhile its out, that it DOES overheat. a few days before A7SIII was released, i switched to blackmagic. i get 12 bit raw internal recording for one third of the price. and it records it on cheapo SD cards. no more sony menues, no more use for an external recorder. for half of the price of a A7SIII i have now a BM camera, batteries, 256GB SD card, three lenses, filters, a screen loupe from kinotehnik, a camera bag, and its ready to go. i keep my old sony A7S and there is no need to upgrade. especially not for that ridiculous price tag.
Each one has their strengths. You're comparing apples to oranges here. The Pocket for the right person is the dream camera, for the wrong one is a nightmare. Don't write off the A7S III just because it doesn't make sense FOR YOU and YOUR USE CASE.
There has been only two Camera makers who will be remembered for "Significant contribution" for serious film makers. Sony for AF and low light, And Panasonic for starting the Mirrorless revolution to start it all (video wise), and the plethora of features that both Sony and Canon finally adopted some years later. Swivel, touch screen, non stop recording, full HDMI, non heating & reliability etc.... Thank you Lumix and now Sony.
Good thing they did not include the 8k feature and focused on what people really wanted from this camera, after all it has been a long wait. It is nice to see that Sony is still going strong.
great video Kai , i think this will be the best all around workflow camera and the most reliable and a big is the hotshoe mic mounting with no cables and ability to run 2 different mics to separate audio in post
is output from A7S 10bit far different from A7iii 4K quality or is it possible to match both cameras in one project? of course s3 give more options in low-light, HDR situations and in colorgrading postproduction
I'm wondering if distance shots of Kai ( of him in frame holding the A7SIII handheld in vlogging/selfie position ) are *also* being recorded on an A7SIII *or* being recorded on a Panasonic s1h or GH5 perhaps ? A7SIII = zippy fast phase-detection AF, a few nice shiny specs, a streamlined compact body design, but is that really worth thirty-six hundred bucks = *more than double the cost of a GH5* with most the same bells n whistles + FULL SIZED HDMI Port etc. I personally would go for the GH5 first, +better glass options (lens).
Hey there how would you judge the R5 /R6 AF performance (very fast subjects like wildlife) vs say Sonys A7RIV and A9ii (speed demon) ?? Wonder if you've had any time behind these bodies and are you willing to risk answering ? :)
Great video Kai, and always nice to see our renowned dry British humour on full display! Have you been using the camera much since this initial first reaction?
Good review! Thinking of buying, could you please suggest the best cinema lens for this camera. But I need a bit with a range ... not much but still... as I'm filming sport not every time could come close to the scene. Now I am using sony rx10 iv
Amazing camera for sure! Well done, Sony! I will be sticking with my A7iii / GH5 combo for now though and I'll wait and see what the A7IV has to offer! I think like the A7III Sony will hit the sweet spot with the A7IV with it's photo and video capabilities vs. price point.
Is this camera primarily for Vlogging ? because I was wondering why you would drop in photographing Stills from 41megapixels in the A7R iii to just 12 megapixels in the A7S iii for twice the price.
9:01 mark You're right, swing the camera like a nut and you will see rolling shutter. The only time I ever saw it, is on RU-vid reviews. As far as the a7Slll, It's all in the final results, not the specs. Many may be disappointed. I'll stick to my FUJI X T3 and the exceptional FUJI XF 16 to 80mm OIS WR lens.
Love your reviews Kai! I have to say the image off the Sony looks a bit plasticky (if that's a word) or at least more digital than the Canon cameras. Is that your experience with it?
You know, a lot has been said about overheating and managing heat but the Panasonic S1 without any fan has never had any overheating in my experience shooting 4K30 10 bit under a thousand watt tungsten lamp for 2+ hour interviews. The auto focus in the Sony cameras is tremendous, but the 4K is not as detailed and the color although better is still quite poor.
Does it crop down on the sensor with an APSC mode, same as the a7iii, when you put an E mount lens on? And if it's only 12 megapixels, is that enough for 4k when you crop down the sensor to APSC?
