Have you been able to experience and fix the audio drop situation with Earc? My audio drop regularly when using app on the tv or external with an Xbox. I read that other A90J owners have this issue and I can’t find a solution. Thx
Thank you very much this worked perfectly for me. I have the Sony X 95J I can’t find any information on how to do this so I decided to go back a few months to a different model and it works perfectly. I didn’t know about those settings . The Apple 4K TV kept trying to take over everything I would select cable TV and the Apple 4K TV would start up or I would try to leave the Apple 4K TV to go back to cable and it would reverse itself. And these instructions fixed all of that. Thank you
Thx for the video. I have the Sony A80J, Denon AVR 4300h and Oppo Bluray Player. I plugged Oppo to TV HDM4 and eARC from TV to ARC on Denon. But i do not get any sound when I switch sound to Audio system. What input should I select on Denon receiver?
This is exactly what I needed (plus one small revision) to finish setting up my Sony stack of products. I was stuck not getting certain bitstreams to decode on the sound bar. Follow the steps in this video. They worked out well. The HDMI setting on the TV needs to be set on enhanced format (dolby vision) for me. That gave me the Dolby Atmos on my sound bar when I checked the display for HT-A7000, after it displays Dolby Atmos 48hz, and pauses for a second it then says vertical firing. I also got some additional text for my DTS formats as well. My setup is PS5 -> A90J ->(eArc) HT-A7000
Two questions in audio output 1. Audio system prioritization, enable or disable? I have sono bar, sub and rear speakers 2. Digital audio out. 3 options Auto 1, auto 2 and PCM? Which one to use for dolby atmos
Great 👍 video!! I know you guys LOVE your speakers 🔊!! I’m a headphone guy and use them 90 percent of the time. After Techno Dad exposed Vizio so badly, I was worried the Sony would have issues. This one ☝️ was positive, good job Sony 👏
@@TechnoDad For 2800 dollars, that should not be happening. I would say maybe Sony can fix this with an update but we know how that goes. You always say, “Just Wait “ and here’s an example of why buyers should take your advice.
Thanks for the great video! I learned a ton about my new TV - the X90J, sound and how to hook up my very old Denon AVR 1911. I'll be back to your page when I am ready to get my new receiver for sure!
I'm still lost. Hooking my Denon AVR 1908 to Sony x90j. I just want to seen audio from TV direct. Any help greatly appreciated. I've done steps above and in manual. My Denon to outdated?
Are you saying that if I have earc on the tv and the receiver I can hook everything up to the tv and Dolby Atmos will go to the receiver? I don't need to hook everything up to the receiver? Thanks!
Saw a comment online of someone saying if you want to play Dolby atmos you don’t need eARC on. I have this tv with Sony HT-G700. Should I have eARC on ?
GREAT walk through of the setup of eARC. Would you also illustrate how to Play a BRAVIA movie from the Sony App through eARC to the receiver's theater sound system? Sony has a long list of iMAX movies and ATMOS - so I would like to see how to get this to play on my Marantz. Thanks
Using the settings in the video above, here's what I found using the A90J with a Denon X6700H (set up as 7.1.4), Oppo UDP-203 4K disc player, Apple 4K TV v.1 and Zeskit Maya Ultra High Speed interconnects. (a) The best audio I was able to get through the Denon via the TV's eARC whilst streaming the inbuilt Netflix, Amazon Prime and Apple TV apps was 5.1 DD+. (b) When I connected the Apple TV direct to the Denon I got 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos for Netflix, Amazon and Apple selected via the Apple TV box. (c) When I connected the Oppo to HDMI 2 on the TV and played an Atmos encoded disk I got 7.1.2 and DD DTHD on the Denon's display. (d) When I connected the Oppo to the Denon direct I got 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos. (e) When I connected the Apple TV direct to HDMI 2 and then HDMI 4 on the TV I got 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos on the Denon's display. Conclusions: (1) The A90J's eARC works. (2) Trouble is, the sound output from the inbuilt A90J apps is a poor 5.1 DD+. I think this is astonishingly bad for an expensive top-of-the-range Sony "Master series" TV. Can this be fixed via a firmware upgrade to the TV or reworked apps? As an aside, Sony inbuilt Netflix showed up as 5.1 Dolby Atmos for the first week of ownership (a month ago) but never since - go figure!
@@uncois Try connecting the xbox audio direct to the 950t and the xbox video to the a90J. The Xbox MUST be able to output Atmos. You must use high-bandwidth hi-speed HDMI cables in all cases, whether in your original setup or as I suggest here, in order to get full atmos.
I just discovered the same thing with my setup and the X90J... From all the built in apps I can only get DD+ 5.1, no ATMOS even though the Disney and Netflix apps both state the content is available in ATMOS (assuming yours says the same on the app?). From my Apple TV connected via eArc I get dolby ATMOS without issues for any content that specifies it supports it. Real shame this seems to be the case, not sure why the TV can't pass through the ATMOS meta data to the receiver.
Thanks TD. I'm trying to get my head around this. If your using the built in TV apps then earc seems great and your not loosing any audio by doing this vs using say an external box like an apple TV plugged into yiur receiver? For other sources. Like your blue Ray player etc are they plugged into your TV or your receiver?
Good video, I just got the A80J and use a 8k 2.2 Onkyo avr. Everything is working fine but I haven't really changed any settings. eARC working good but the only thing I'm confused with is HDMI signal format. Since I'm using an avr and all my components are hooked up through the eARC port, can I still have different formats for different components? Like enhanced for PS5 and Nvidia Shield and standard for my cable box pvr? Or should I just choose enhanced for all my hdmi ports? Sorry if this is a real noob question, I'm fairly new to this but learning, any help on this is greatly appreciated.
Can I connect both ps5 and Dolby Atmos soundbar at same time...I mean can I connect ps5 to hdmi 2.1 Port number 4 and Dolby Atmos soundbar to hdmi 2.1 port number 3 ..it is possible ??? Plz reply
Hmm. What about Sony 4k player into Sony 1080, then HDMI out of AVR into Earc on back of A80J. Did that make a difference? Or is it better for pass through like you set up and why? Can you hear a difference. I have 5.1.2 speaker set up btw
Hello sir.. Greetings from India!! I have Sony X80J TV and Samsung Q950A Sound bar. I'm unable to get Dolby Atmos though it is connected through TV eARC to Soundbar eARC via HDMI 2.1 Cable. I don't have streaming player or AV Receiver . All content from TV Apps. What to do ? Please help. Thank you!!
So as long as you send the uncompressed/compressed Atmos signal from the earc port to the receiver, it will pass fine? Im asking because HDMI 2 isn’t a 2.1 port so I’m assuming as long as the earc port is 2.1, then it doesn’t matter which other ports don’t support 2.1?
Does this apply for the Sony X85J? I know the settings are roughly similar between your TV models and the model I currently have, but I wanted to make sure if this video applies since the model I’m using doesn’t say on the title of the video?
Great video! I've ordered the XR65A90J but realized later that my current AVR (Yamaha RX-A3060) doesn't support 120Hz video passthrough. I'm running everything from my HTPC powered by NVidia RTX 2060. I am hoping to connect it directly to the TV and then utilise eARC to send the ound to my AVR. Will the TV pass through the sound from one HDMI input to another and then to AVR?
Thanks for the informative video however I can’t seem to get the Sony a80j to send atmos to my Denon 4400h, I’ve done all the settings correctly do I need an HDMI cable that’s 2.1? Thanks for your time.
Thankyou for this very helpful video. My 77 inch Sony A80J arrived yesterday morning. I connected the Sony OLED to my 10 year old Yamaha AV Receiver that only has ARC just as you explained how to do it and it worked perfectly. Well I did have to go into the audio settings of the 4K Fire Cube and selected "use best audio format option" which is basically Dolby Digital 5.1.The receiver has 7.1 channel capability, but I have a 5.1 channel speaker set up so the extra audio modes that a new 4K AV Receiver can output do not improve the audio of a 5.1 system. Or am I wrong? Thanks again for the video.
Wow man. Thanks so much for this video. I thought I’d set my Apple TV / HomePod pair up correctly to use Atmos from the TV. I HADN’T. I’ve just made those audio output setting changes and HOLY SHIT, it sounds amazing. Thank you.
Now my audio out of my sound bar and wireless bass sucks compared to the audio out of the tv. How did you get it work properly? I just got the 80j with my Apple TV but it says it’s only 4k at 60hz vs the tv says it can do 120hz. I love the Apple TV use though.
Thanks for the video, it helps.. I have an A80J and am using the over the air and Netflix.. I have a very old Yamaha 5.1 reciveer with digital audio so have to upgrade the reciveer. Since I am Ota will EARC be of any benifit? I do have an older blue ray which is rarely used so just streaming 4k Netflix from TV. Router plugged into TV. I find all the connections a bit confusing want to be sure I'm getting at least 5.1 out of the surround speakers. Thanks
Hey Channa one cuestion, which is the best way to connect your Nvidia shield or blue ray player, through your receiver or directly to your 4k tv. I will like to know if connecting to the receiver will diminish video cuality. Thank you ahead ahead of time.
Question...I bought the Sony A7000 sound bar. Ran HDMI from the eARC on the sound bar to the ARC on the TV. Do I plug the PS4 into the sound bar or directly into the TV? Thanks
Great video, great content. Subscribed enthusiastically! Question though…why are you doing this testing by hooking DVD to TV and TV eARC to receiver? I bought a Sony A80J and Denon S960H. I was going to plug DVD into receiver, not TV. Is that a wrong move? Should I plug all externals into TV instead of using the receiver as the hub, with just the one HDMI running to eARC HDMI on TV? I’m really getting lost in why/how to hook all this up? Any advice much appreciated!
Welcome!! The only way to test eARC is to send an uncompressed signal through the TV to the AVR. Since streaming apps are all compressed, the only way to do this is to connect the device to the TV. So this is only to test that eARC is working properly. I have all my devices connected to the AVR and then the one cable from AVR to TV.
Hey TD, got a question. My a90j comes tomorrow yay. I own Sammy q90r soundbar. Originally it was arc but got the update to earc... The hdmi cable is still 2.0. I assume that's enough right? I don't need to update to a 2.1 cable right?
@@TechnoDad that's the thing... Original the q90r was not an earc.. So I don't know if the cable (its an original Samsung cable 2.0) does not support ethernet. Is there a way to check it?
@@TechnoDad nothing there.. U know I have an annoying bug.. Every rime I click on back my Ps5 switch on. Besides that I can't seem to find any Dolby atmos movies on Netflix. No idea why. I just see 5.1
Not sure why I can’t get Dolby atmos through the internal Netflix app on my A90j with my denon x1700h. However Netflix app on Apple TV plays atoms fine. Any idea? Thanks
Great video. I just subscribed. Question please help!! I just ordered Sony A80J 77" with Sonos Arc (Arc, Sub, and two SL1 for rears). My question is, I have HDMI 2.0 with ethernet like you said for the Sonos and HDMI 2.1 for Ps5. Do I just plug 2.0 into EArc of HdMI 3 and change setting to.Earc on TV? Thats it? Will that get me DD+, Dolby Atmos etc? Sorry, never had a OLED or Sonos set up b4
Might be a dumb question but I have to ask since my tv is never mentioned, lol. I bought a Sony x91j a few months ago and I want to find out if this works for it. I read rhat my tv has to have Dolby digital plus besides arc/earc to be able to use atmos. I'm a total noob on this and any info would be appreciated. Again on the Sony webpage it says the tv has Dolby atmos/dts surround.
I have a Sony surround sound with the 77” Sony a80j. I have no idea why I can barely hear the dialogue when I use the surround sound. When I use the tv speakers it’s fine but I want the bass and stuff. What do you think is wrong?
Why were you and Fomo and B talking about the eARC not working right in the A80J and A90? Also can you have the ARC come out of your HDMI 1 or 2 port instead so you can hook up XBoc and PS5 on 3 and 4 ports?
Because with the 2020 models, Sony tried to add features and the update would break eARC, and there are repots of audio dropping out while using it. Just because it works now doesn’t mean it won’t break when they try to add more features. As far as your question about using another HDMI port, even though they all support eARC, the TV can only output from the one designated port.
What receiver and speaker set up would you recommend to go with A90j tv . I would like to get receiver, left and right and sub for under $2500. Use the TV as the center Chanel.
Hi, I have all the yours settings but in my Sony soundbar insee only on the display dd+ and not Dolby Atmos when I’m playing Netflix in atmos mode. What’s the problem? In the earc channel mode I’ve the enhanced mode, should I set into standard? P.s my hdmi cable is 2.1 and the soundbar supports all the new features audio, including atmos! Thanks
Have you found anyway on the A90J/A80J to set a custom name for HDMI devices (not the port names) that default to Player-3, etc for devices like BR players? Sony only seems to get a real name for ones like a Roku but not a non-Sony BR player!
Thanks for the video TD .. I have a question. I have the Sony A80J and I’m running the EARC into my Pioneer Elite AVR (302) which only has ARC . Will I only continue to get DD + Dolby Atmos compressed sound because my receiver only has ARC ? Thanks again for the info
The source is my Series X when I was running it through my receiver I was able to get DTS X but now I’m running it from my TV I can’t enable DTS X through the Xbox .
Hello, just bought a Sony x90j and want to setup an sharp soundbar via HDMI arc,but it's not working,no sound from soundbar I selected soundbar as main in settings(that sound worked fine when paired with an old xiaomi tv)any suggestions?
Hi I have the a80j tv and have denon avr s750h. Set all the settas you have set but I have in denoplug in xbox how do I set up so when console turns on denon change input to game hdmi channel?
So I have a80j and had problems getting the eArc to work bought a high speed HDMI Ethernet cable still had issues called Sony no avail to problem I then did a factory reset and the tv started playing Atmos . I checked the why it was working and found that eARC was off and this is the only way to get it to work ( I did go thru all your settings on video first. So all of that being said on my television for some reason I have to have the E arc off for Dolby Atmos
Great video what I was looking for. I saw you connected the player to the tv hdmi2. Could you have just connected the player to one of the Denon hdmi output and gotten the same results?
Hi Techno I had a question I have a A80j 65 with the Denon 3700h. My question is does it make a difference if I run the Blu-ray player plugged through the 3700h as suppose to running the Blu-ray player through the a80J?
using the Marantz app, it shows that my A90J is outputting at 1080p using any of the Bravia Core, Netflix, Amazon apps on the TV. But if I use an Xbox or Apple TV the Marantz app shows the correct resolution. Do you know what's causing this error? How to fix it? I know it's displaying the correct resolution because when I launch the RU-vid app on the A90J and go to Nerd Stats it shows 4k but the Marantz app still just shows 1080p. Thanks for any info you can provide.
@technodad Help!!! Muffled Sound from Center channel (external sound system) Hi, I recently got a Sony 83A90J. I connect my Arcam AVR21 and external 5.1 speakers via an Audioquest HDMI 8K/10 to the HDMI 3 eARC port. I have checked all the settings before posting here. (The same as showed in this video) Under Sound setting, I made sure to disable TV as center speaker and enable pass through. However on the native apps from Google TV, namely Netflix and HBO Max, the passed through surround mix (5.1 or higher) resulted in muffled sound from the Center channel!! It’s extremely hard to understand the dialogues and the drop in sound quality is obvious. I tested by using the TV speakers and the sound seems fine (probably because it’s a more compressed stereo version??) When I switch to my Blu-ray player (connected to the AVR), the sound quality is stellar. This makes me wonder what kind of sound setting I have to set to enable5.1 or higher audio sound mix pass through!! Any input would help me quite a bit!! Cheers!!
Hey, do you know how to confirm that Dolby Atmos is correctly passing through from the TV to an Onkyo AVR via ARC/eARC? The Onkyo app does not seem to give much info. The display doesn't show much either. Do you have a video about it? Thanks.
Any particular settings I need to be aware of when connecting the A80J to a Samsung HW-Q950 soundbar? Since I won't have any external sources other than an Xbox One (that I seldom use and will just be directly connected to another HDMI port on the tv), I'm guessing I won't have to worry too much about eARC? Hoping these two work together to deliver Atmos or DTS (even if it is lossy)!
@@TechnoDad Big fan of your channel. I have a question about this. I have the same set up as Alex but minus the XBox. I find that the sound from my Apple 4K TV is better when I have EARC off vs EARC set to Auto. When on Auto the sound is a bit muted. Any thoughts as to why?
@@TechnoDad Ya on my Sony X90J, it shows a list of sound modes including Standard, Dialog, Cinema, Music, Sports, Dolby Audio. I have a Dolby Atmos soundbar and I have applied all your settings you put in the video, but I am not sure if those sound modes I mentioned above matter.
Someone help me out. I have an A80j with a PS5 connected and a Sony soundbar on the EARC. How to I get to audio output settings from the Home Screen with just the apps. To turn on EARC mode and that stuff? And center speaker mode. First time with a sound bar so I’m confused. Maybe I don’t need to mess with those settings…
What the benefit of Earc over just Arc, You have been able to get uncompressed audio via HDMI Directly into the receiver. I thought that Earc gives more bandwidth to use uncompressed audio from the TV apps. or Devices connected directly to the TV HDMI.
@@TechnoDad I was trying to pass audio through my capture card, and then output it from my soundcard. It didn’t work though, now I’m planning to just jerry-rig a stereo audio connection from my receiver to my soundbar+sub.
@@TechnoDad @Techno Dad yeah I gather this was for me, I appreciate you testing it and making a video about it. I'm deciding between the C1 and A80J and am leaning towards the Sony so long as eARC would work. I'd run the PS5 to HDMI 4 for the 4k 120hz and run my AVR to the eARC port for enhanced Dolby Vision. This would be to avoid having to change the HDMI setting manually everytime I watch a movie or play a game. I heard for the PS5 for eARC to work properly when you have the HDMI set at 4k 120hz you have to set it on PCM. I'm assuming that's a setting to change on the PS5, I don't have one quite yet but hopefully soon. Also just want to make sure the A80J would work for me if I go that route over the C1. Again thanks, great video!
got an a80J and a bdv 6100 home theater...all of a sudden sound stoped working from the tv altho all the apps form the bdv6100 work perfectly with sound..its just that sound from all the tv apps and ps5 dont work anymore..i am so damn lost:(

So, I had a denon s920w receiver connected with samsung tv. My Nvidia shield pro was connected to the receiver (cbl/sat) and the tv the Arc port. Whenever I watched content either netflix or youtube the receiver always did the audio format switching. I recently got the marantz SR6015 receiver/sony a80k and somehow the audio doesnt switch as the denon did. I have to manually switch the audio content in the marantz CR in order to enjoy my movie/music. Any suggestions anyone have!? I am on the edge of fatory reseting all three devices to see any changes!
I've done everything here and cannot get audio sent from X90j to Denon AVR 1908. Changed settings on TV and also on Denon to HDMI - TV as per manual. My receiver to old school? Has various HDMI components.
I just moved in a new place and you helped me decide on the A80J. I was going to get the 70 inch but will wait for the 2022 A80K. For now it will be the 55inch.
Dear Techno Dad, I want to use my Sony A90J OLED TV as a central speaker however, I do not know how to connect it to my Yamaha Digital Sound Field Processing Amplifier DSP-A2070. Help will be highly appreciated!
@@ratcheva I googled the DSP-A2070 and see it has TWO center speaker binding posts. They are labeled "Center", and A and B. Also, having TWO is unusual but you can place one center speaker above and another below the TV to make the center sound come from the horizontal midline of the TV instead of above or below as it would if you only had one center speaker. If you use two center speakers left and right, place them close to the sides of the TV. That setup would be to widen the center sound. Just make sure ALL the speakers are "in phase" with each other by ensuring ALL speakers have + on the Yamaha connected to + (or RED) on the speaker. The other half of the wire would go to the " - " The double wires should have some sort of marking to help you make the correct connections. Having said that, the A90J has a speaker connection on the back labeled + and -.. Connect a single cable to those, and the other end to the + and - of either one of the A or B pairs. That connection is to take advantage of TWO SPECIAL FEATURES, and you might as well take advantage of them. One is that it has some "actuators" behind the screen that make the screen itself vibrate to produce sound. The other special feature is what Sony call "Acoustic surface audio +". That is meant to make the sound of the action on the screen come from the position of that action on the screen For example, if a person is speaking on the left of the screen, their speech would come from the left of the screen. If your screen is large or if you are sitting close you should notice the effect. To make full use of it all you should go into the TV settings for picture and sound and look for the calibration tool. Follow the screen directions. It will using the microphone in the TV remote. You will hear weird sounds for a short time, and you are done. You should always sit at or close to that position for best results.
Do you have a video to recommend for the rear surrounds? I have a bar to the rear and went with no rear wall. Debating and researching rear height or rear sides at ear level behind sitting area. Not wanting to do tower speakers do to little kids for the time being. Goal 7.2.4 I Went with all Yamaha in wall speakers and height speakers for atmos.
Great question, Sam! Since we are using the cable from the TV to the AVR for audio, we won’t see the display if we hit info on the AVR, as we are not using that input on the TV. The TV will be using the input of an external source, like HDMI 1, 2, or 4, or the TV apps. The AVR is connected through HDMI 3, the designated ARC port. So we won’t ever see anything being displayed from the AVR in these situations, which is why I use the Denon App.
For me earc has worked for Atmos, but for 5.1 and 7.1 LPCM for some reason I hear the center channel coming out of the left and right rears of my q950a respectively. I’m using a PS5>TV>Soundbar via earc setup. Anyone else come across a similar issue?
Could anyone tell me please if my connections are OK? HDMI 4 (Enhanced Dolby Vision) - Blu ray 4k Dolby Vision. HDMI 3 eArc (Standard) - soundbar. HDMI 2 (Standard) - Nintendo Switch. The soundbar is connected to the TV via earc, Nintendo Switch + Blu ray player are also connected to the TV. Thanks.
Do I really need an AVR? I have the sony a90j, sonos arc, xbox, appletv. I find it hard that my earc port is occupied only by my sonos arc and my other 4k port by the xbox. Im left with my appletv in hdmi port 2. Just discovered you, I like your content!
