I don’t think the A1 is obsolete. The new A9iii only has 24 megapixel sensor instead of 50 of the A1. That is a big disadvantage for wildlife photographers who often have to heavily crop photos. I’ve never found 30 FPS not enough with the A1 and I’ve never noticed rolling shutter. The pre-capture is about the only reason, I would consider this new camera for my use, but would rather wait for the A1ii. The 50mp of the A1 is far more important to me than pre capture.

And now the A1 is only $200 CDN more than the A9iii. I'll take the A1 for wildlife and BIF.

I could have settled for 50 fps in exchange for 33 or 40 megapixels, but maybe that's just me. The tech looks amazing, but the ability to crop in on wildlife is more important than the ability to fill up an 8 TB hard drive in less than a minute.

The A1 and A1ii will probably have better dynamic range. This camera is designed for sports shooters that normally use high ISO's, so the base ISO of 250 is a compromise for them to shoot fast shutter speeds. Hopefully Sony has overcome the dynamic range trade-off. We will soon find out.

The 50 MP is still a advantage for A1. Especially for people shooting landscapes. The a9 iii is a hard-core sports and wildlife camera. People can use it for weeding and landscapes also yes but the main focus is always on wildlife and sports. But the issue with Sony is still the lack of software update support for premium cameras. The updates coming to A1 or Siii ar so nominal and soooo late. With nikon and canon the support the cameras with firmware updates much more than sony. This is something that sony needs to work upon.
@stretch90
@stretch90 9 месяцев назад
I really like the extra megapixels for wildlife as well. So often you can't get in proper range and you need to be able to crop, and I don't think 24MP is good enough for that.

No way possible the A1 is obsolete. I'm guessing it will be the hybrid 8K monster of the lineup as the A7sIV is rumored to be 33mp and max out at 6K. The A1 mkII will have something to separate it from the A9III. No way Sony passes on being able to charge $8K for a camera.

A1 gives more resolution but probably the update on it will increase the speed. This is an excellent camera for motion but for still high res there is the a7r5 & for the hybrid there is the A1 which will drop in price & who knows what they will put in the update. I wouldn't trade my A1s for the a9III if the A9III was free. I shoot mostly small wildlife, and the 24MP sensor simply isn't sufficient for most wildlife use cases. The a9 was created for sports photography, and the a9III is still a sports-centric camera. When you say the a9III would replace the A1 for wildlife, I just assume you are not a wildlife photographer. The global shutter and 120fps are great achievements, and building blocks for future cameras, but not necessary for what I do.

If you shoot flash, this camera is revolutionary, otherwise it’s just incremental improvements. Precapture is the other big new feature. But the A1 still has its place with resolution and image quality. The reduced ISO range is also probably indicative of lower dynamic range and pixel peeping image quality, although practically I’m sure it’s fine.

Global shutter in full frame profesionall camera ts a milestone for photography. And Sony have done it first, and seems so they do it good. So many things in a9 III is just insane. And its fit perfectly in A9 lineup. People who want more mpx and less fps just dont need a9 but a1. Dont worry - it will be for sure. Now we wait for Canon response - at it better be as good as a9 III (But what is chance for that? Two milestone sensor tech that people waiting since 10 years, annouced almost same time from different producers, in a less then few months?). If they are not ready, then... well... we probably will get R3 mark II;) Congrats to Sony for beeing a leader, who brings innovative at whole new level, again.

There is no doubt global shutter sensors are the current state of the art and the future of interchangeable lens cameras. The only downside is the cost of mass producing theses sensors at a price point to make them usable in cameras that can be sold at midrange prices. The stacked sensors have been relatively slow at being adapted into midrange priced cameras, the global shutter will likely take even longer.

I love the ability to crop my images...and i get good speed. Also look at the comments here. People care about mp. The A1 represents the best of both worlds. I love that the a9iii has global shutter, but be mindful that they did not discuss dynamic range. Potential draw back here once people analyze the images. I love the a9iii specs but be mindful of potential drawbacks.

120 fps takes only 1 second, then 20 fps for a while, then even slower. 4K video takes the same amount of time without overheating as a Sony A1, and 1/80000 of a second is just 1 frame! So for the same money I would take a Sony A1, I just don’t need this global shutter, and everything else is not better but worse. Interesting assessment. It is quite an achievement though I would disagree that the a1 is obsolete. I suspect it will take a while to get the a1 II as I suspect it will be and 8k global shutter and at least 50 mp before it comes out. It will probably require a new processor and maybe a new card (or maybe CF Type B?). Heat dissipation would be an issue just like it was when the a7siii came out. But it will come. Just a matter of when. In the meantime the a9iii is the vanity camera for the Olympics and the associated press will be thrilled - Getty is probably shitting themselves if they haven’t switched to Sony …. Yet.
