A comparison of only two potential candidates is far from comprehensive whose value serves only to pump up one or both to the exclusion of other direct competitors. Not useful. Most of them are functional. Compare them all paired down to can do and can not do and which are subscription (ie. one way business model) or license (ie. Two way business model). Everybody is a critic.
In 2024 Tamron has really Nice lenses the 70-300 excellent cheap and sharp and light, 70-180 g2 f2.8 very good, fast for sport, 50-300 and 50-400 half macro at 50 and improved features and range. They are rocking.
I have the 70-300 and it’s very good for the last years with my a7c. You cannot be wrong with this lens. Today there is the 50-300 but i like this 70-300 reliable fast sharp and light, so light..and i like the contrasted photo i get with it. Ibis work well with the 70-300. This lens is well above its price range to my opinion.
Can you please advise, I can't make my mind between this lens the Tamron 70-180 g2 and the new Sony 70*200 F4 macro lens. I'm thinking to get the Sony but the F4 is making me hesitated as I do a lot portrait as well. But I like the idea of getting sony glass as it performs much better with Sony camera of course. How do you see it. Thanks so much for helping me out.🙏
Totally in disbelief I took advantage of a very short Amazon offer which went from €1700 to €600 new and obviously I bought it instantly. I hope it's as good as everyone says
Thanks for the great review....two things I have to say...I saw that the max reach although the 50 300 is sharpest at the max length it is darker. 2sd I still find a 24 105 100 400 setup to be better
In EU, the value argument flips on it's head with 50-300mm being priced at 900€. That makes this lens more than double the price of 70-300mm and only 200€ cheaper than 50-400mm. But this will hopefully get better over time as the lens is new and prices have yet to drop. Otherwise, image quality is sharp enough for this type of lens, but I do not like the swirly bokeh that can be observed at 2:31 because it is distracting and something you'd only expect in very cheap lenses these days. This same issue can be seen also in other reviews and it seems to get worse at longer end of the zoom.
Thank Stefan for this INFORMATIVE & "SHOT-BY-the-SPEAKER" video. As of today, July 13th, 2024, out of 6 videos regarding to Sony A7V, yours is the BEST. All the other five are fake videos by my standard because they are made of AI voices & their footages are copied and pasted from Sony or other sites. The people who make them don't bother to shoot the videos themselves. Sony, please add 2 things to the A7V. Number one, 32 BIT FLOAT internal audio recording like that of Panasonic LUMIX GH7, please. That will help all the solo shooters a lot. Number two, please add 4K60 with NO CROP, please. We don't need down sampling but we need NO CROP, please.
Dommage de ne pas avoir comparé à la focale 300 mm, les "deux" objectifs :( sinon très bonne review ;) Il semblerait aussi que l'autofocus est plus rapide sur le 50-300 que sur le 50-400mm - Too bad not to have compared the “two” lenses to the 300 mm focal length :(otherwise very good review ;) - It also seems that the autofocus is faster on the 50-300 than on the 50-400mm ?
I saw a comparison with the Tamron 70-180 G2. And I like Tamron better in terms of bokeh and depth of the picture, it gives depth and plasticity to the photos. The bokeh of Sigma is too crystalline like taken with an iPhone.

this video is very useful but i wonder what if you compare Sony 70-200mm g master 2 and sony 100-400mm for sharpness. do you have a chance compare these two lenses especially at 200mm for 70-200 and at 400mm for the other? and extra 2x teleconverter for the lens 70-200mm.
I really like the bird photos you've shown here, especially those of the blackbird eating from your hand... Definitely would like to see that 50-300 come to Fuji X mount, I so dislike all of their mid-to-long telephoto zooms.
I might switch to a 28-70 because I kid you not I don't know what it's about my 24 to 70 whenever I have it in my camera bag and I go through TSA my bag always gets flagged and I know what's the reason it's that lens they always think I'm smuggling something which again if anyone knows what camera lenses are kind of hard to with all the mechanical contraptions are inside but they always flag my bag and they check my lens so that's an annoying process so hopefully if I get a different lens that just works as great that might make my situation better or could make it worse😅
It’s not a macro by simple definition. It can’t do 1:1 so it’s not at all a macro. With the 2x converter it becomes a macro but with a giant loss in brightness.
Wait, wait! I can generate the same photos with AI in Stable Diffusion! Why I should buy this monster lenses if I can generate the same image with Ai ?
Great review of a great lense. Having just bought the Sony 70-200 f/4 for my a6700 and wanting to travel relatively light, this lense seems to tick all the right boxes for my future wildlife endeavours. The 200-600 is just way too big for my taste and the only competition this lense has for me is the Sony 100-400 GM. But I am afraid even for ambitious amateurs the price of that lense, puts it safely out of reach for us. If Tamron ever released that 200-400 f/4, which currently is just a patent and a rumour, though, I might just get that one.
