Sony AF8/ A8F OLED TV Review 

Happy bank holiday weekend in the UK! :-) Sony has started rolling out the Dolby Vision firmware update on the Sony AF8, but unfortunately we had returned our review sample by then, and so couldn't test its DV performance.

Warsaw in Poland is on AF8 screen at 0:27! Nice! Beautiful city!

just got this recently.and with the updates and all i dont see much lag in the operating system. the colors are amazing out of the box.

Excellent review as always! I specifically liked the quick comparison between the A1E and AF8 and then the summary of why a person would want an AF8 or essentially the Sony product over the LG or Samsung... Soooooo I guess I will keep saving for an AF8.... Good looking out....

I do prefer Sony’s approach to HDR but its disappointing they can’t follow the PQ curve correctly. Still I’d have this over the Samsung’s over blown option.

Very useful. In reviews Vincent, may I suggest you ALSO give an idea of TV performance (particularly motion/colour e.g. using Sky/BBC News) in HD and SD please. This is so we can get an idea of what it is like just to watch TV - as distinct from movies. Cheers.

I purchased this Sony Oled for my bedroom and I love it! The picture quality is amazing the sound quality is also amazing. I will agree with Vincent that watching a movie I would like a little more bass so I’m trying to get a sound bar or something but the TV sits so low on the dresser that if you put even the thinnest sound bar out there it will block the bottom screen. So now I’m looking for the HTX2 to set the Sony on top it’s a sound platform. What I didn’t realize was what Vincent said that I could just add a powered subwoofer to the headphone jack great idea and I’m gonna look into it. Vincent thanks for your fantastic reviews they’re a bit over technical for me but I enjoy listening to them. I Purchased the 65 inch LG Oled E8 for my living room and would love a review on that.

Sony AF8 underpricing LG C8 in UK is a shift of apocalyptic proportions. Sony have always prior gone with the premium price for a premium product.

Don't worry Vincent the A1E does the same harsh ABL dimming as the a8f so I hope they try to make it a little less harsh with a firmware update.

I was both surprised and relieved when I got the notification of new video! Too bad the panel was returned before the DV update. Would like to know how Sony is faring on DV updates now.

Entertaining review Vincent, as always. Huge shame that your test model appears to be less bright than many other reviewers' sets. I always value your opinion massively, but from scouring umpteen other AF8 reviews, you're pretty much the only person who's reported that it's less bright than last year's A1. Still Sony's fault, don't get me wrong. Just a shame however, as these findings certainly don't tally with my day to day observations of the screen. Keep up the great work anyway. Still undecided whether or not to try and arrange for you to come and calibrate mine! Bought it through Crampton & Moore, so really am tempted. (Although, in my infinite naivety, I really don't know HOW it could look any better...!?) Cheers

Solid review as always, Vincent. I have a question, why does Sony's flagship TV's only just have 2 HDMI inputs that support the full HDMI spec? I've noticed it's a pattern with them.

Hey vincent. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate the c8 with the new chip vs the a8f/a1e at cleaning up noise from low bitrate content (satellite/netflix streaming etc.) particulary in dark scenes? I have a b6 and a 2015 vizio m series at home and on some content the macroblocking/noise is really distracting on the b6 vs same content on the vizio looks much cleaner. Wondering how far along the lg's have come before i jump the gun on a new one. Thanks. And thanks for all the content you put out...great stuff :)

AT 10:30, I wonder if the gray bars are intentional to prevent screen burn-in. Instead of "fixing" the bug, they could make it a user selectable option: black vs. some degree of gray. Depending on panel technology and how frequently the user sees content with aspect ratio different from the panel's native, gray instead of black bars might be the better choice, both for the vertical and horizontal cases

Rtings talks about stuttery or jerky pans in low frame rate content...I wonder if that's because we use 23.976Hz vs 25Hz in UK...or if there is some setting that you used which might alleviate this problem. Rtings also said the cause is due to the panel having such a high speed...any thoughts on this, Vincent?

I have an KD55A8F model which I bought a couple weeks ago at a decent price, I am a Middle-East customer and I have to say this is a fantastic TV, The speakers are indeed above average compared to lets say, Samsung TVs. It definitely wont make a Sound Bar or a speaker system a necessity, unless you are going for some sort of Surround setup. Down side that the Dolby Vision Firmware update hasn't rolled out in Middle-Eastern Regions and I have no idea if this will happen at all, I have tried looking it up everywhere but no luck. As a regular consumer, I am not gonna worry about the nit and grit and having moved from LCD LEDs to OLED TV for the first time, The picture looks phenominal, the blacks are near perfect, HDR content looks awesome. 1080p gaming has 40something input Lag unlike 4k Gaming. which can be better on other brands HOWEVER, unless I am going to play competitively, it wont be much of an issue. Lastly but most importantly, OLED panels still have burn-in issues, I'd watch out for having Static images on for too long.

Bought a 65 a8f last week.. upgraded from a 9 year old KDL46 XBR45.. 1080p rgb local dimmed tv... still getting used to the oled look. Looks more natural and smooth... but haven't been as impressed as I was expecting. Considering 10 years of technology advancement... 😂

Are there gonna be A8F vs C8 comparison video, Vincent?

On the spat between on AF8 and Q9N on the tone curve tracking merits. Samsung Qled TV with the brightness edge can really work on some scenes with whites and texture - like wedding dress scenics. The whites need lots of luminance to bring out the gleaming brightness and texture which many Oled just can't do with the ABL and nits limitation. No perfect TV for every scene out there. The B7 is suppose to track perfectly like the 30k Sony Oled studio monitor. So get that then.

I bet the reason the bezel is so close to the table is to help sound bounce, not a bad idea really.

A question for you Vincent. With OLED, particularly the A8F, have you ever experienced what seems to be some kind of edge enhancer? I.E. When watching a TV show or a movie, the person(s)/actor(s) on screen seem a bit too much in focus so that they almost appear to be cutouts in front of the background?

Hi, great review!! I've only recently purchased the A8F so very new to OLED and even changing settings. I have two questions: My firmware seems up to date having checked with Sony also, but I don't get Dolby vision; How to I get that option? Also, do you have any picture setting recommendations using SKY Q and also for Netflix? Thanks in advance.

What I have heard is that LG has changed the amount of organic material that goes into the panel this year so that it can withstand burn-in a little bit better. The performance should be the same though.

What do you think about the Android TV interface? Do you have to deal with it at all if for instance you just plan on using Apple TV?

Hi Vincent, Which Sony OLED TV has the best overall quality between the A1 and the AF8?The A1 is cheaper, but will there be a huge noticeable difference if I buy the AF8? I'm looking to buy a 65 Inch set. I will mostly use it to watch You Tube and Netflix.

My mother has an LG tv, and some apps don't work now after 1 year, LG support can't do anything, they don't care, they want you to buy a new TV. That's why I'm getting a TV with android, Goole Play ensures you always can download new apps. I just hope they update the somewhat sluggish version on this to a newer faster version.

i opt to keep smooth gradation off. the upsides of haing it off far outweigh the downsides of having it on. I just have it on for broadcast television

I’m confused, do I have to switch back and forth from different settings depending on what I’m watching, there not just a set and forget setting? Is the video on how to set up the different inputs. Example hdmi 2 for 4K DVD player and hdmi for cable box

Hello. Long-time owner of Plasma ST60 (which I love). Just got a new Sony A8F and while the 4k and HDR are stunning, it seems to really be suffering regarding picture quality from standard cable. Don't get me wrong, the picture looks nice, but it seems as if the colors (especially whites) have more of a florescent look rather than the rich look of the colors and whites on my Plasma. A good example of this is would be someones white dress shirt. On the Sony, it is a dimly lit white, white on the my Plasma, you can actually see the herringbone pattern within the shirt. I have fooled around with the settings to near exhaustion. I have tried yours and few others but still have not found the issue. I have the color temp set to Expert 1 and have tried Peak Luxuriance on off and every other setting. Gamma, contrast or brightness wont pull out the details in whites either. Can someone please help! Is this a Sony vs LG OLED thing or more of a OLED vs Plasma change in tech... THANK YOU!

How do you change the Aspect ratio so you don't get the two black bars top and bottom on wide screen films?

The £3300 I just dropped on this TV last month was one of the very best decisions I've ever made. It's an absolute stunner... Ps. I've not experienced the dimming issue at all. Also, HDR highlights - especially via Dolbyvision - are bright enough to cause me to squint. Other than Android being a little bit slow I literally can't think of anything I would improve... I'm sure the LG C8 is basically just as lovely. There sure are a load of petty, argumentative weirdos in this world of AV. I thought the kids on video games sites with their XBOX Vs PS4 bickering were pathetic. 'Grown ups' with their TVs are evidently no different...

Sony A9F was leaked on Sony’s site last week. I would assume this will be announced at IFA. I would definitely wait until then...

Yeah but Sony said this year with there a9g they refined the processing for the latest panel so they do know when it changes and they said they made it have more shadow detail and a little better highlights this is why in there site it states mastering shadow details and highlights

Hmmm think I’ll wait fo the review on the new 55” 2018 Panasonic OLED, I don’t think I could cope with the lag of this TV when gaming.

So sony a1e is brighter, has more picture accuarcy as well as fuller and better sound quality. It is still the best oled tv, sony ever made. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I'm still happy with my Plasma. If it goes out, I would consider this t.v. Lot of money though for something I watch maybe 5 hrs a week. Be nice if the price went down significantly.

So the million question is... Sony AF8 or LG C8 ??? I'd go for Sony but higher input lag is kinda worrying. How much better is frame interpolation on Sony?

I suspect Sony claim it's the same panel to protect the A1 which is sold alongside the AF8, and pegged back the brightness potential of the AF8 to be the same as the A1 for the same reason.

I’m playing red dead redemption 2 on this TV and it’s so dark. I’ve turned HDR off and the colors during daytime scenes are exponentially better looking but during dark scenes I sometimes can’t even see my character. I’ve messed with black levels, gamma washes the picture out, I don’t know what to do. I’m ok picture setting “vivid”

I bought the AF8 2 days ago, from Currys, Pc WOrld for £1600? was very happy with the price and then of course the picture quality, could be a little brighter, nitt count is 700, where it could/should have been at least 800 nitts, oh well, cant have it all I suppose
