Sony AF8/A8F OLED TV | Trusted Reviews 

My parents just got this TV for thier home. Simply Brilliant, might not be the brightest compared to competition, but they have no problems with its brightness, infact they simply love this TV and I can see why. Image quality is simply brilliant, at first my parents were a bit confused that dark scenes were actually pitch black and thought that was a bug (they are so accustomed to the usual LCD/LED "back light" that was always there on thier old TV, even in dark scenes) but they quickly realized that now they can actually tell what is going on way better in these kind of images. Image quality also shines especially when there is a 4K HDR content played (like via Netflix, which now also supports "Dolby Vision" HDR thanks to a firmware update to the TV that just came out this week). Also going to get thier cable box upgraded to a 4K supporting model just in time for the World Cup. I don't care about sports but I might just hop over just to experience it in glorious 4K :-).

I love the stand of the A1E. I'm really hoping we get a follow-up to the A1E with the same stand in 2019.

Good review - have to agree with you about the remote and the android set-up, however, none of these are deal breakers for me. The one thing putting me off the A1 was the stand, so I'm glad this version has come out.

I Purchased the 55 inch 2018 model because last year‘s model would not fit properly on my dresser in the bedroom. I must say that sound quality on this TV is excellent, by far better than all the other TVs I’ve had including the E-series that LG offers. Picture quality is excellent and equal to the LG 65 inch E8 in my living room.

What's the durability of the TV ...I mean if you put a little force on TV with a thumb on screen ..what does it cause

What Sony misses out in nits, it makes up for in motion handling & color calibration... That's why the brand is that good.

I always enjoy films/games in a low-lit/pitch black room so an extra 100 nits or so is irrelevant to me. This TV is plenty bright enough. A truly awesome, natural looking picture...it feels like a true successor to plasma...

I'm curious what's different with the a8f. It seems to crop some content that the a1e doesn't. On top of that, the motion judder can get really janky.

Just picked one up for just under $1000 in 2020. I felt is was a steal since I still cant seem to find a current OLED for under $1000

How is the burn in / image retention on this and the A1E? Been looking at 4K Tv's but I am worried that if I get an OLED I will get Burn in... I saw a E8 or C7 (forget which of the two) in store on display and it had massive burn in with the LG Logo so I am leaning more towards Sony because I haven't seen burn in on their display ones.

Hey does everyone not notice with the Sony a9f and a9g you can add even more saturation to the cooor and the live color I mean the pop and colors are very very nice some of the best I've seen then add the light control and the new pixel contrast booster I've never seen colors on an oled like it the a9f and a9g have the most color volume of any oled and it's amazing bright and dark colors and again 700 nits on an oled is more then people might think especially compared tot he 300 to 400 a couple of yesr a ago just think about it 2 pixels can get 700 nits in dark scenes no led can get as bright because the fald system will dim surrounding areas and you cannot get that brightness people dont think about this stuff there are areas where an oled has that wow factor where led doesnt and then vice versa so please keep this in mind this is why I like Vincent he explains it very well

My current oled is 500 nits, and i find this plenty bright enough, so i guess this AF8 with 700 nits would be a good upgrade for me.

Well i have found out the A9F is coming this year which will be a true grade form this TV ...

It's not the same panel as 2017 though is it? Compare the two and the 2018 panel is clearly thinner, and another review I saw did a pixel test to show it is a new 2018 panel....

Ced, in light of these recent shootout results, do you think you may have been a little over the top on your claims that the AF8 can't really compete against its new rivals? Apart from winning 'Best Living Room TV', if you look at the more 'secondary' results you'll see that the AF8 was a close second for 'Best Home Theatre' tv, second place for Colour Accuracy and Contrast Performance & won for Motion & Processing. Puts things in perspective really. May I recommend a slice of humble pie for lunch...

Hello, Why nobody talks about basic specs like CPU chipset or RAM? I have installed app AIDA64 and it shows a quad core up to 1.1 GHz max and 2 GB RAM. The brand only public internal memory (16 GB) but AIDA64 only shows around 8GB available due to partition. IMHO this is under-sized configuration for a high-end smart TV of end of 2018. If you ask they say they cannot give you that information, which is really important for the consumer. I don't believe that configuration can manage 4K properly. Cheers.

I'd love an oled, the main problem is that there is a window directly opposite the tv and it does get the sun all day from 11am until around 9pm (summer time obviously) and I just don't know if it would be bright enough once in room. I've read good things about the Samsung q9fn, the brightness sounds like just what I need for my room and because my tv is also used as my pc monitor there is no chance of IR/burn in which when spending big money like that is something to be aware of I think. The only real problem I have with it is the price, nearly £4k for what is essentially a glorified lcd is taking a bit of a liberty when you look at the brand new oled technology.

The Monolithic range of Sony LED once had a slant floating form stand - then they didn't in the years after and then 'Yes' again with the A1 Oled, now 'No' on this model - so I don't know what Sony is doing or want.

You really shouldn't even be talking about brightness on 2017/2018 OLED panels. If you have a lot of sunlight get an LED. Also, Sony's processing murders Samsung's, resulting in much better detail in dark or mixed light scenes. Try a starscape or camp fire scene on a Samsung and see what happens 😝.

I’m soooooo confused, why now brighter is better, I have a Pioneer Kuro Plasma and was always told it was the true black levels that made tv’s better at that time. What has changed. I’m considering upgrading to a OLED tv and I think I’m getting information overload. I always read that OLED tv is close to plasma. I have never read better than plasma. Why?

FYI a good Tv is about Balance In every details aspects... Tv is not light bulb as Samsung understood!! Zd9 , Xe93 still better than Sam Q9 ... Real thing not just on paper.

No, I will not sacrifice brightness. We purchase TVs for the best possible video, audio is secondary. The sound bar option is always present.

Actually, in another review by a very well respected reviewer, he says the LGs crush the blacks , not this one. The LG may be brighter, but that does not mean it does not crush the blacks. The Sony OLED is the first TV I would even consider after having a plasma. Too much brightness is not how we see things. Sony OLED's are the best TV's with the best video processor available. Simple as that. Virtually no pixelation or banding and very natural video with very good motion. Its the closest to plasma I have seen to date.

Haha I hate this stand and love the A1 stand and the 6 Degrees! But unfortunately the A1 screen is like a mirror.

You are wrong man, the Sony AF8 has two sub woofers on the rears you can see them in this video and the A1E has one that is the main difference. The screen does not shake at all quite telling lies. Go to your local Best Buy and see for yourself.

This is a LG oled with a Sony sticker on it and most likely not the latest screen. LG owns the patent for producing oled screens and Sony stopped producing their own screens a long time ago.

you know what's sad? is that motion handling on any other tv brand other than sony is a bit of a joke, I see you skimped across this rather quickly, i have the very first sony 4k UHD tv, namely the KD55x9005A which had to be patched to get 60fps on 1 4k HDMI port and yes this TV from 2013 has better motion handling than any Samsung or Panasonic i have tried, in comparison others look absoloutely awful! i purchased samsungs flagship late last year and the motion handling is damn right terrible! jerking around and slow to quick moving scenes and looking like a sopa opera, Panasonic faired a little better but still look like a soap opera, and the picture of this 5yr old tv still kicks a lot of ass in terms of picture quality and sound even today! How anyone can view a Samsung with that motion is beyond me, Sony is king of motion handling anyone who tells you different has no clue about TV's motion handling.

What the heck. The Samsung Q has inaccurate colors and an over brighten HDR according to a quite a few reviews . How can you used that as a comparison . Should have it go against the LG which is also a oled.

I'm sry but it competes with the q9fn it just doesnt get as bright it's better image processing even better blacks contrast I mean and motion is slightly better yes Samsung is brighter and is better input lag but that doesnt mean this TV doesnt compete and the colors on the af8 is just outstanding on the color and on standard mode it gets brighter then 700 nits it gets up to 900 nits everyone tests it in the other modes but yeah get to standard you get the color pop more brightness so I mean you have a choice and I mean it's an oled lol and to top it off sonys image processing adds even more contrast to the image lg doesnt come close there that's why Sony is it for me with oled tvs

+Trusted Reviews 700 nits compared to 2000 nits? would you miss it? do you need more nits? i went to currys today with the cash to buy it, they have it on offer at £1999.00......i originally went to buy the xf90 but and had firmly made my decision not to buy an oled.....but i watched them side by side and was drawn in to the oled simply by detail but was a little disappointed skin tone on Wayne johnsons face in the Jumanji clip they were showing.... face skin tone was more natural looking on the xf90 than on the oled. Detail is lost in oled in some scenes of the various demo clips shown yet some scenes looked breath taking on the olded. It really messed me up lol I sadly walked out without a purchase after realising 3 months dedicated to research sony tvs did not come in to use. What should i buy?? samsung? i'll be mainly you tubing, streaming films in a standard ul living room. Sofa directly in front of tv, bay window on the side.

Just purchased this today lovely tv. But after connecting cctv PS4 virgin media and an android box all sound was lost 😩. So after following all the bullshit trouble shooting guides I reset the thing problem solved. So buy the tv it’s awesome and if this happens to u save time and reset 😁

Very negative tone to this review. Other than the crappy Android OS, this is a great TV. Rtings does far superior and in depth reviews with TONS of tech analysis. Go there for better info.

Acoustic surface sound = The best default sound on a tv to date, Sony's Android TV interface = A sluggish mess compared to webos and tizen, The price = absolute ridiculous for essentially last year's TV, Sony Dolby Vision compatibility = A complete and utter mess,

This guy is either Samsung fanatic or sponsored by Samsung, I watched most of his review's, he is all about Samsung .. Don't believe this guy's review. Sony has the best OLED TVs and comes before Panasonic . AF8 and AF9 both are unbeatable. This guy gave Samsung N950 sound bar home theatre 5 star, it's such a joke.. I returned immediately after realising that the bass was so inadequate. I got Bose 700 Theater and seriously so happy with it.
