I don't know if you're still in the business or still monitor this uploaded video, but I wanted to tell you that this is a very good video. I have one of these units in my shop right now. I've been in this business for 30 years and have always had issues repairing Beta VCR's. til I watched your videos. I have one of these units in my shop right now. I purchased a unit for parts on Ebay and went to work. I was ready to condemn the unit after I swapped the Head/motors and it still didn't work. I found a schematic and found 9 volts was missing. I just received a new regulator IC and fixed the unit. Thanks for the motivation to see it through.

I love the old Beta format machines. I have an SL5200 I am going to drag out. It is the first of the HiFi units, and the machine that started it all. The idea that you could add 2 pairs of FM carriers to the video FM, chroma under carrier MUX was fascinating. VHS never did manage to do this. They had to use separate heads, with a different angle on them so they could lay the sound into a deep layer of the tape, and then record the video over top of the sound. The result was a degraded picture from the reduced S/N ratio caused by the interference from the HiFi sound track, even though the recording angle was different by about 40' there was still cross talk between thr tracks. On Beta, there was enough bandwidth, due to the larger head, and higher writing speed that they just stuck the carriers between the chroma and luminebce signals. Same heads, different frequency, no cross talk.

Amazing that someone still has the knowledge and has the time and kindness to share it..We don't have it in the uk anymore..Thank you and i will be watching your videos with great anticipation!!!!!!

azshaw123 We don't have many still in the business here in western Canada either. Most of the shops are now gone, and those that remain charge so much that nobody in their right mind would repair anything. Even the manufactures like Sony and Panasonic have closed up shop.

Also when removing the drum assembly.If you secure the top of the disc with some tape, and make sure one head (or two sets if it's a Hi-Fi) are inside the metal bracket the other(s) being opposite. It allows you to know where the heads are and stops the disc spinning when you handle it. Limiting the chances of breaking those oh so fragile heads.

Great you can swap parts from other models.Great video.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 9 лет назад
Yes you can. Most parts are interchangeable across several models. The exception being video heads and lower drum assy. These have to be the same type. IE 2 head, 3 head and 4 head types. The upper drum is the same, as is the motor assembly.

Great videos, thanks. My SL-C30E had the same issue. The head would randomly stop mid-play or during FF or reverse, or it would not turn at all. I removed the glue from the hall sensor, and it seems to work fine now. I have another issue however. When I eject the tape, sometimes the tape is not retracted back into the cassette, and the drive mechanism sounds/looks a bit sluggish. When FF'ing and reversing it sounds like the unit has to do a lot of "work". The tape transport itself is okay though. I have taken a look at the motor and pendulum but the mechanism itself doesnt seem sluggish. Could the tape itself have too much traction?
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 8 лет назад
+Rhytz Usually it is the pendulum gear getting sticky.As to the glue on the hall sensor, if you watch that 3 hour Sony Betamax factory training seminar I posted from back in my service days, the instructor talked about that issue.

My hfr70 ate the tape. finally pulled it out. head spins ok. ? When I insert a tape, it goes down, then pops back out. So it doesn't load the tape. The geared belt is a bit sloppy.
@umajunkcollector
@umajunkcollector 7 лет назад
update, opened the case today. It's like the tape guides that pull the tape around the tape won't return the tape to reject it. It's like stuck in play mode, the buttons won't respond, not even reject or power off, just stuck in play mode. I lifted the tape out, unplugged it, got it to reject the tape, but it seems like the thing that pulls the tape around the head won't return to reject it?

I once put the connectors in the wrong place on an Atari 1050 disk drive when the connectors came out of the plug; well, it didn't much like that! Fortunately, I put it back the right way.

Usually if it IS the hall effect sensor,when you press play, whilst the play light s light ,try to turn the head disc.If you feel resistance either way until the play light goes off then it IS the sensor.If not it's something else.Dry joint, bad head drive IC.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 8 лет назад
+paymydues Right. The hall sensor job is to provide feedback to the drive is as to the phase of the motor rotor, so the drive ic can generate the 3 phase drive signal. No input from hall sensor and only 1 cool is energized. The drive ic is waiting for feedback before advancing the 3 phase rotational drive.

Hello. The head drum of my VCR has the same problem and I´ve identified it is caused by the hall sensor. Unfortunately, I don´t have VCR spare parts to get another hall sensor. Does anybody know which hall sensor can be used as replacement ?

I can get the drum spinning now and it will restart by its self when it has been on however whenever I power it up I have to manually spin the head and eventually it will slowly pick up speed.

Great video just need some advise I have a sl-hf3000 which is the same as the unit you have the 1000 and I've just replaced the regulator so I've got power as previously advised on your other video but the problem I have is the the head drum doesn't spin freely I removed the drum and it seems the shaft is grinding ,could this be the reason why it's not spinning in playback,I've cleaned the glue off the Hall effect but that didn't work,is there a way to fix the shaft so the heads spin freely ,if not would you have a spare complete drum you would like to part,happy to pay whatever to get one,your advise would be greatly appreciated ..
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 8 лет назад
+charlie g The drum for the 1000 / 3000 is a 6 head drum, that is 4 video heads and 2 FE heads. That was specific to that model. It is possible that the bearing in the lower drum is dry, or has been gummed up. Have you removed the rotor assembly so you can access the bearing on the bottom and tried to lubricate it?That would be the first thing I would try. The head disk should rotate freely with no resistance. It also could be something binding the head disc assy to the upper/lower drum assembly, like for example a piece of broken tape that wedged in between the upper and lower drum halves in the head slot, and is sticking the head drum. Carefully separate the upper and lower drum assembly to inspect.

+12voltvids hi thanks for getting back to me ,I finally got the head drum to spin freely the upper drum was believe it or not out of alignment so I adjusted it and it spinning freely so I connected it all up again and still not drum spin,so I removed the drum again and replaced the stater assembly from another Betamax I had which is the Sony Sl C9 can you confirm if that the stater assembly is the same ,it s identical to the one I removed I also cleaned the Hall effect and removed the glue but still didn't work everything else works the capstans spinning fine any idea would be appreciated ..

Help please with my Sony SL-S600 capstan motor is not spining on play, only spins during Slow Motion, I cleaned rollers, cleaned switch under the loading motor as you mentioned on 711B3 chasis, still the same, could be a leaking cap on capstan?

852/5000 Regards. As always I keep an eye on many of his videos that have been very helpful foy me. Can you help me please, I have a problem with two Sony Betamax SL-20 and SL-HFR70. Both have the same problem, turn on but the characteristic sound of the solenoid is not heard, it does not move and the cassette is not loaded either. I already checked and cleaned the IN sensor of the cassette and the resistance that the solenoid carries. I checked the voltage at the connector on the board where the solenoid is connected, I simulated the loading of the cassette in the load gate and the voltage at the pins was only 0.02 volts and when I took out the cassette it returned to zero; Apparently the correct voltage is not reaching the solenoid to actuate but I cannot find the service manual to proceed and check. What voltage should reach the solenoid? Please any additional indication? Thank you.

@@12voltvids Do you know any machines that have the same video head?
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 4 года назад
@@robertstoddard4478 The 2700 was a 3 head machine. 2710 will be the same, I think the slfhr50 and 500 was also the same. Many are interchangeable. I recently swapped a drum from an SLHF900 into an SLHF1000. Now theses are completely different machines. They are both 4 head units, but the 1000 is an editing machine with 2 flying erase, which the 900 does not have. but the head works without the clean edit of the 1000. For me I am only using it to playback . A 2 head will also probably work, but you won't get clear still or slow motion. That is what the 3rd head is for.

Standing dropouts in the picture means that the Drummotor make this problem on one point and there is no Dropout Compensation you can see. this is also my Profession but in my Country noone will pay for this typ of work anymore they said this is to expensive and why you'r so expensive and why that work need so long time. etc. What is the charge per hour or better if you repair a Betamax Recorder with this typ of failure? Best Regards Volker King

Volker King Well shops used to charge upwards of 80 an hour. I am a little more reasonable than that when people contract me to repair, but then I am not putting food on the table repairing stuff anymore. I changed careers when I saw the writing on the wall in 2002

that was the time when Sony destroy themself with a Philosophy like the HiFi Optional Board for much of Dollars. We don't have Beta here in Europe only Video2000 (that never came out in the NTSC Format) and in the later days VHS. Betamax was not so common here in Austria.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 9 лет назад
Volker King The concept of the HiFi ready was to be able t sell a machine with a low cost, and later when the buyer realized that they made a mistake and should have bought the HIFi machine they could upgradeThe cost of the VCR, and the processor was actually a little cheaper than buying a hifi machine. About 100 cheaper, however the cmbo of the 2 units had a few less features than the higher end hifi machine.

There´s no Video2000 in NTSC? Thought some units arrived to US. Just today I bought a HFR model (the "R" stands for "ready" to indicate stereo adaptor had to be sold separately. Does the processor sell out as a cartridge on the unit or is a special circuit?? Thanks.

The HiFi processor was a separate box that sat below the VCR and plugged in with a multi connector cable.
