Cool monitor. Nice video. I picked up a JVC multi-format recently and haven't messed with the SDI yet nor do I know much about it. But if all it takes is a HDMI > SDI converter, i'll try that out so I can hook up some newer consoles.
Yeah, that's all it takes. Just keep in mind that not all consoles will work well with certain HDMI to HD-SDI converters. One big culprit is the PS4. The HDCP encryption is very particular and will require a splitter or a special converter to display properly on your monitor.
Awesome man. The BVM's are quite intimidating with the added requirement of that control box. I picked up a PVM 20M4U a few months back and still need to find some speakers to use with it. I also need to figure out how to hook up some other systems to it. So far it's been dedicated to SNES. Killer setup!
I think that's a great combo. Finding the right speakers is a must. Remember, the speakers need to be shielded. If you put them too close to a CRT, you'll have a rainbow effect on screen that could potentially damage your PVM permanently.
Yeah i'm pretty happy with it. I still haven't bothered with speakers, haha. I'm not a big sound guy so i don't mind the built-in mono speaker right now. I appreciate that heads up about the rainbow effect and potential damage it can cause. I got it dialed in about as well i can using service mode . I haven't invested in anymore cables to hook up other systems yet. I put up a couple videos showing it off if you care to check them out. Thanks for the reply bro it's nice talkin to ya. I didn't think you would respond haha. You have some impressive systems and monitors! I also have one really weird question that you may be able to help with. Do you have any tips on removing the plastic rivets that hold the PVM 20M4U's shell in place? Mine are being stubborn and i actually damaged one trying to take them out. I'd like to be able to dust out the inside periodically
UNREAL, this was actually highly informative, and educational, i really enjoyed it, but man oh man, spawn NEVER looked so good... thank you for this, you've ignited something..
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I hope this encouraged you to seek out this monitor. It's probably the best monitor I've ever and will ever own for retro gaming.
Question: Which card are you using for PS3? I’ve noticed that when I use the 21D I get ghosting artifacts. For example in the texts in the PS3 menu. When I use the 41HD the ghosting is gone. BTW I’m using HD retrovision cables and. gcompsw. Is the card just not as capable for component or would you think I’d need a recap.
I think I was using the stock analog card inside of the D24. I recall speaking with Pat (retired Sony tech) and he mentioned that the 21D has the worst image quality of analog inputs. If possible, just use the internal card, or look to get a 24N. As far as recaps go, I wouldn't advise it. There's a lot of caps and it may not even be the issue to begin with.
Does the NES Zapper works with that TV? If it does means that TV displays in native resolution without upscaling therefore you get the best picture quality for retro gaming.
Could you please help me out with the PS3 connection. I have a D24 which I want to hook up to my PS3. Are you using the following setup: PS3 -> Porta --> HDMI to SDI-converter --> D24?
I have the second version of the Xbox component cables. The one without the box, and just the wire by itself. I've heard that this version is the best.
what type of model of the sony PVM or BVM would you reccomend for the famicom and SMD game consoles (through the rgb famicom and through the rca scart from smd)?
Since the famicom or SMD only output 240p, you won't need an L5 series or BVM to play them. Also, ask yourself what size you're looking for. I'd say a great PVM to start out with and it's a good size is something like the PVM-20M2U (or E if you're in Europe).
Lots of these bvms have a "comb filter" for composite video. With this enabled composite looks amazing. Not sure what to compare it too. Maybe s video on a pvm or component on a consumer tv. Not too many people seem to know about this
Interesting how this technique is used. I wouldn't know what to compare it to either. I'd say start from the D series BVMs and then work your way down to PVMs.
Hey dude. I wouldn't say it's a requirement for converting HDMI to SDI, but I've come to learn that there are a few benefits of having it thrown into this particular set up. The HDMI to SDI conversion on an aspect ratio level isn't perfect. I'm not sure if it's my HDMI to SDI converter box, but the image appears to be slightly overscanned. This happens to all my HDMI sources. What I found out about the DVDO iScan HD+ is you can adjust the overscan and underscan ratio very nicely. Unfortunately, the BKM-42HD's SDI input will only accept a 720p or 1080i signal. So you're probably asking, why don't I use the RGB inputs on the bottom portion of the card? Well, there are certain consoles that are HDMI only, such as my Analogue Nt or even the Xbox One X. It will allow me to convert any incoming 1080p only sources to either 720p or 1080i. It will also upscale any 480p image to be viewed at 720p or 1080i. Depending on which DVDO model you have, you can create custom timings in the resolution to convert the incoming signal to 240p to create scanlines. Once again, and I can't stress this enough, my set up may not fit the needs of many. However, it seems to be working for me and I thought I'd share this info for those looking to obtain similar results.
Hi Phonedork and Phatnightmares I have bought a Sony BVM-D24E1WE from a seller in the UK it has 20000 hours on it, is that a low amount of hours? and how many hours dose your monitors have? It cost me 1300 British pounds for the monitor and the shipping. do either of you have any advice about using a Sony BVM-D24E1WU for the first time? also I was looking into getting the HD SDi card for HDMI but I heard the module has a very noisy fan have either of you tried replacing the fan for a smaller quieter one?
Thanks! You go into set up and there's an option for naming your channels whatever you want. From there, you just used the up and down keys to choose the letters and such.
I have a DVDO iScan HD+ that can be used for downscaling and I'm getting a Extron Super Emotia in the mail soon. I can see it being an interesting video with those downscalers working independently or together. I'll post up a video once I have everything set up.
It's a little hectic in the game room. Moving stuff back and forth and getting new set ups hooked up. The MGS doesn't have a case and the KH was in the PS3 before but I forgot to put back inside. Rest assured that my games are always very well taken care of.
What an awesome setup, honestly I'm the most jealous about the analogue nt. It's alot of work to get an nes to output to RGB. I bet it looks awesome on this TV but honestly even composite looks good on pmvs/bvms.
Unfortunately, my Analogue Nt only outputs HDMI. I just pre-ordered the Noir, so I'll be able to finally see what an NES running RGB looks like on the D24.
@@Ex_Savior I'm jealous, thinking of picking one up as well. Have you heard of the Mister core console thing. I'd recommend checking that out aswell if you wana see alot of consoles output in rgb.
That's a really sweet picture from the Sony BVM 24". I was wondering whether you find the 24" kind of small for gaming purposes, especially if one is used to larger HD consumer tvs? A low usage 32" BVM-D is probably extremely difficult to find, while the newer BVM-A requires the expensive & rare rgb adapter card. Also, is it even possible to consolidate/auto-switch all the audio inputs from your consoles when using a soundbar, as the BVM-D doesn't have any audio capability (RCA or S/PDIF)? I would barely have enough space for a BVM-D in my room, and no way to fit a receiver/5 channel speaker setup. Thanks!!
For 16:9 games, the image has slight overscan but that's nothing that can't be fixed, especially with my DVDO iScan HD+. Regardless, the image is crystal clear. In my humblest opinion, I would go as far to say it compares to your modern day LCD, maybe even an LED. In 4:3 mode, the image measures somewhere between 16" - 17" depending on the console you use. As much as I'd love to get my hands on a 32" BVM, it's amazingly heavy and amazingly expensive. Good luck if you decide to track it down. Since the line count stays at 1000, the image is amazingly clear. Definitely not the best CRT to play a 4 player game like Goldeneye or any onscreen 4 player games. I've been looking into getting a modern stereo receiver to act not only as a audio switcher, but more as an HDMI switcher for my BKM-42HD card. What's stopping me is the cost lol.
I have bought a Sony BVM-D24E1WE I was looking into getting the HD SDi card for HDMI but I heard the module has a very noisy fan have you tried replacing the fan for a smaller quieter one?
I personally don't hear the fan over the sound of my speakers. I've heard that there are fan replacements for the BKM-42HD, but if you don't have the right fan or pin out, you will get constant errors.
Hopefully you find one locally! Don't be afraid to throw down a few thousand and make sure you're ready to travel for one. Also, bring a friend. These things are heavy.
At the time, I was using my gscartsw to output my analog sound, and optical out for my consoles that had HDMI only out. Since then, I've began using my vintage stereo receiver for all my analog sound.
Hey man, I’m I making this up or did you say you live in NJ in another video? Reason I ask is I’ve been looking for a larger PVM and wanted to see if maybe the person you got this one from has some more for sale.
I believe it was calibrated before I bought it. How well? I can't say for sure. I can also say that my phone at the time of this recording may have lowered the quality of the image.
I would say yes. CRTs process 1080i resolutions very well. Although people might argue that it has lower bandwidth than 720p, I don’t really see much of a difference. The only immediate difference I can tell between the two is 720p has a very slightly softer look than 1080i. 1080i comes off as a tad bit sharper in image quality.
Looks amazing. Found one on eBay but he wants £3,500 and it has over 46000 hours... Ouch! Out of curiosity, how many hours does this have? Because it does look amazing. I have a PVM-20M2MDE already and except for not having 480p+, it does a great job 😃
I'm not sure what you're asking here. There's no need to go from SDI to RGB, since no console or playback device consumers use have SDI as an output. And by you saying red, white and yellow I'm assuming you mean composite video? RGB and composite are two different things.
I did, but the main menu only shows 480i or 480p. Unfortunately, I don't have a 1080i outputting game for the original Xbox, which is why I only showed what I could.
Hi all I have just bought a Sony BVM D24E1WE and It has just arrived today the seller that I bought it off said it was working and he sent me photos of it working before he sent it. I spent hours setting it up and I plugged it in and turned it on for the first time and nothing It won't turn on at all it makes the normal click sound when you turn the power switch on and it makes the click sound when I turn it off. on the front of the BVM the lights don't light up at all the standby light should light up when I turn the power switch on but no lights turn on. I can see inside the BVM there is one green light lit up on the power adapter so I don't know what the issue is I have removed all the modules and plugged them back in and still nothing happens the BKM-10R won't light up or do anything. have any of you had this issue with a Sony BVM before?
It reminds me of an issue I used to have with my PVM-20L5. When I would put in an incompatible BKM card, it would make 2 clicks and show nothing on that input. I would try removing all the BKM cards and turn it on as it. If the problem persists, try asking Partick Gravier. You can search his name on Google or his eBay listed as "Savon Pat" He might recommend you sending in the deflection boards to him. Since you have an E model I'm assuming you're in Europe somewhere, but just know that Patrick is located in the US in California.
@@Ex_Savior I have 2 questions. Since PVMs and BVMs are Multi-Format that can detect NTSC, PAL, and SECAM signals, will they also work with multiple voltage standards from 100V to 240V without the need for a step-up or step-down power transformer? If so, do they come with multiple plug outlet adaptors for different electrical plug outlets used by other countries?
ExSavior- going to try looking for one 😁. They are pretty hard to come by where I live, and I sure don’t want to get it on eBay. The shipping alone will blow up my wallet 😂
i have the same razer speaker i love them. except for the horrible plug in for the sub.. i'm always afraid to break it. also my bluetooth function stopped working.
Yeah the subwoofer plug is very fragile, I've retired mine since this video and haven't really used it much because of that. It's a shame since it sounds pretty good for it's size and price.
@@Ex_Savior still use mine (about 4 years) and that plug has literally chipped but still works!! its still has info on the razer site and often thought about reaching out and see if they can help track a replacement
I'm sure there is, but it doesn't bother me to the point where I need to do something about it. Edit: I've been using my DVDO iScan HD+ to fix it. Works perfectly.
Hi! Awesome monitor, looks super crisp! I just got one myself! Quick question, does your monitor show a weird diagonal line that disappears when you power the monitor on / initializing screen? I have a link to a video of my monitor doing this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EkqEStVbpyo.html I heard this may be a normal thing that the D24's do. Thanks!
Yes, it does actually! I spoke to Patrick Gravier about it and he said it's perfectly normal. I forgot what the lines are called, but it's nothing to be worried about.
Nice 4:3 crt! ,but this one is a little shorter in height, why? It didnt grow up like the others? Just kidding lol but its true they called a shorter version of 4:3 "widescreen display" I just call a not grow up 4:3...lol I rather prefer a 4:3 one... beautifull display btw congrats!
I don't feel the need to share the price that I paid for this BVM for several reasons: The current market value for these items always fluctuates. The same monitors can increase from a few hundred to even a thousand, depending on supply and demand. Prices vary from country to country. The demand for BVMs is rather high in the United States, whereas the the demand for BVMs in say, Germany or China, isn't as high. Therefore, the cost of said BVM is not going to be a direct reflection of the current market price. The market value can also depend on the same model depending on many factors, such as cosmetic appearances, card options, and operation hours. People in this community don't seem to understand that the prices for these monitors will constantly go up. There are some people that have obtained monitors from a few years back and will insist that the prices for these monitors shouldn't go up this much, and to them I congratulate them for having such hindsight for what became very sought after items for retro gamers. Ultimately, it's no one's business what anyone pays for anything and that should be respected.
I respect your opinion, but I disagree. I like to balance out my lifestyle with games and shows/movies. Some of the best video playback content, all analog and digital, has been significantly better looking than any modern display I own. It's been a few years since I've owned this D24 and I've barely made a dent in the hours it was bought with. I'm not afraid to use this in anyway shape or form I deem fit. Why buy something if you're not gonna use it?
LOL! I'll admit I don't have the same amount of enthusiasm (or triceps) as phonedork does, but I felt just making this more of a personal review, so you'll have to excuse the dryness haha.
You think you'll get 3 grand for that? I got two for $50 lol. They are sick don't get me wrong. No one would pay that. I find it hilarious how much money waste on retro gaming. It has become such a hipster hobby and made the prices get out of hand.
dhhhfxfg I do actually. I've been watching the auctions for these monitors when they pop up and one sold on 1/8/18 for $2,500. And if you got yours for $50 each, congratulations! You invested in them at the right time.
Yep, "no one would pay that" www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=bvm%20d24e1wu&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc&_trksid=p2045573.m1684 I'll take one off of you for $50 if you think they're worth that.
dhhhfxfg probably just doesn’t know the difference between a consumer TV and a BVM. You say $3000 is expensive, when this Monitor retails for $30,0000+. At $3000 it would still have depreciated in value over 90%. He probably just picked up 2 cheap TVs for $50, which he overpaid by $50 because consumer crts can be had for free, lol.
