They are insanely greedy, they offer just one year of service here in EU and if it has the most minor problem they ask you 300 euro to get a refurbished console. I couldn't fix mine due to the GPU being faulty and Sony not offering any replacement parts. I got the refurbished console i am selling it and never getting a PS5 again until they change their stance goodbye Sony.

I'd say it's something less sinister than that. I reckon it was likely too time consuming for them to complete the repair for what it was. They likely have a process of repair time vs the severity of the damage. They also likely have a contracted company doing the repairs.

A legitimate reason for why they deemed this un-fixable is the lack of an IPC certified employee. At my job I’m currently in the repair department and I get several boards with torn pads get thrown out because of torn pads. While my coworkers and would love to fix them, the company can get a pretty fine if we get caught doing certain techniques that we are certified to do. While it could be that they just wanted to make a quick buck and sell the guy a new console, there is a chance that their repair dept. would’ve really wanted to fix it but just is not allowed too. We’ve been trying to get sent off for training to get certified for a year now, but the company doesn’t think it’s worth it to send us away for two weeks while spending thousands of dollars on the class and even more for housing and food.

As someone who works in the commercial repair industry I get why sony deemed it "un repairable" but to me this speaks volumes on why marrying the disc drive to the mobo is a terrible idea. If they didnt marry it this would have been an easy swap for their repair team.
@Tomazack
@Tomazack Год назад
Not sure I understand what you mean, the disk drive is a separate unit with only a wire connecting it to the mb.
@christianemerson4463
@christianemerson4463 Год назад
@@Tomazack typically consoles have security checks to make sure the drive key (some form of encrypted GUID) is the one that is flashed to the boot sector of the console, if you swap the drive the console will either not boot or not allow the drive to work because it does not recognize the dvd key. They do this to make it more difficult to flash custom firmware to the drive allowing you to play rips of pirated games...although also makes repairs much more difficult

Solid fix, disappointed Sony did not at least offered to swap the drive for a fee instead of deeming this e-waste. I would have checked that the motor mounting screws on the gear train were tight. They looked a bit loose in the video, you might not have even needed a new motor.
@F3N01
@F3N01 Год назад
As stated in the comment above, Sony pairs all of the parts of a PS5 together. If you swap out the disk drive, it wont work as it'll not recognise it as it doesn't have the serial code or something. Basically Sony made it that if there's a big enough difficulty to the point of soldering being needed, it's e-waste.
@mehmetmetinbaki
@mehmetmetinbaki Год назад
@@F3N01 be that as it may, but still Sony is capable of pairing new drive to existing motherboard or coding old drive's serial number to a new blank drive, but because selling an entire unit is more profitable than repairing broken ones they just refuse to do it. Please no body tell me that it is impossible, It is them who have done all thoose programing in the first place.
@F3N01

@@F3N01 Exactly, they don't care about customers, they don't care about enviroment. They only pretending to care when it is convenient for them. When there is a global crysis that raises the supply cost they say "we have share the impact and beacuse our cost has increased 5 USD we raise the price 50 USD" When crysis resolved and supply prices drop even lower than before they say "who were you again, btw our cost just droped half but our price will remain as it is"

I worked for Sony a long time ago, and never in the repair dept, but I'm pretty sure a customer would expect some kind of short guarantee on a repair carried out by a Sony repair base. No major electronics manufacturer is going to give a guarantee on a torn pad repair, that's why Sony have deemed it unrepairable even though a DIY'er can probably repair it...Steve himself has done repairs that "he wouldn't sell" for the same reason, to protect his brand and reputation...

Sony probably didn't want to fix it as the problems with the drive was customer caused and not a failing of the hardware on it's own. Still even If they didn't want to fix it you'd think that they would have offered the customer the option of installing another functioning drive???🤔

I am wondering why Sony would decline such a simple repair, but based on the comments…it makes some sense. If Sony is having retention issues with qualified repair technicians, it makes sense. Not a lot of people like doing the soldering required (I found this out first hand with my Xbox). I do feel that it is very inefficient to marry the board on the optical drive either system board, creates more problems for the company that could have repaired, rather than replace (if it was still under warranty). There are a lot of things that one company will deem unfixable that can be fixed, but it requires two things most companies lack today…time and skill. Great to see that you were able to get it working again. So I mentioned an Xbox in the comments above. Since it was out of warranty, I chose a local repair shop to fix it. The sign in the window said, “we fix game consoles”, so I believed they could. Had my machine for a month, tried to charge me more for the repair than it cost for a new one, complained about having to solder (their outside repair expert was having trouble doing it), returned the machine to me with stickers & permanent marker writing on it (had to scrub it off with a Mister Clean magic eraser), and scratched the heck out of the case. I paid $100 for the 30 day repair. I used it once and it broke again (the drive didn’t even sound right. Lots of whirring). I ordered a replacement and did the repair myself (after watching one of your videos) in 15 minutes. The soldering wasn’t pretty, but was better than what they did and was functional. I got another year out of that repair and then I ran into an issue securing quality parts (because the series s/x were in development), so I purchased a new Xbox One and still have it. Will probably replace this year with a Series X machine. Thanks for sharing.

I think Sony deemed it "unrepairable" due to the fact that the service/repair depot operates like an assembly line to only swap components for high volume repairability service. Most OEM warranty service depots, I believe, do this to save labor costs. E.g. One certified technician can can have a backlog of 20 consoles to swap parts then bench test multiple consoles. Since swapping components is much quicker. If they took time to do soldering on one unit and testing and ABA cross-checking, there would be a backlog of console awaiting swapping parts and testing. I think service depots find the most efficient (leanest) means of repairs with quick turn around, which in this case is quick parts swappage and then testing in volume per bench to be the most lean and cost effect and driven, resource-wise.

Trying to fix a PS5 that TWO other repair shops couldn't fix: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--GP8Q5OWCXw.html I see some questions about how the connector got broken and if I remember right the person that sent it in broke the connector. I don't think it was broken by anyone at the repair center. ALSO, I don't blame them for not fixing this console under warranty as it was damaged beyond what a warranty would cover BUT I do think that they should have offered a paid repair service instead of just saying that it was not fixable. That's my main issue with this.

@@Donut0389 thats not what Im saying. I know why its married and why you or me or any 3rd party shop cant re-marry it to another board. But SONY itself should be able to do it, its them who makes that device so Im sure they have tools to do it.

Important, Worm gears do not like to be driven backwards. Sometimes they cant be even.
@Tronicsfix

Most worm gears don't work at all backward. I'm guessing some worm gears can be designed to work backward.
@Mik_S
@Mik_S Год назад
I was going to say the same thing but looking at the other gear it is a helical gear so that can drive a worm gear. I think there must be some wear on the teeth of the gears that prevent them meshing correctly, or the worm gear has been pulled off the shaft of the motor a bit, I can't tell tho.

I think that most companies that have repair facilities (such as Sony) should have technicians that have training similar to yours. Good job man! you show the WORLD how its done!

They probably have, and decided this is not worth repairing (as in, it costs more to pay the technician for his/her time than it costs to get the customer a new ps5).

Can see why Sony and even MS file these under non fixable. Their repairs usually leave the console still looking as new. Doing that repair would have made it look like a shop repair.

11:17 looking at you trying to get the worm gear spinning hurts. worm gears are supposed to go one way only, from the snail to the wheel, not the other way around

That’s why there’s that Phillips head port to extract a stuck disc if it was inserted wrong but the worm gear was made to work to a certain degrees like a steering rack on a car.

Hmm quick suggestion. i would have turned around the connector on the board and flipped the outer 2 cables of the plug going into it :) then you probably would have kept the entire mounting strength. but then again i am no console expert and I am not sure that would of worked either! keep up the entertaining videos Steve! ps. unfortunately the iFixit pro tech toolkit is not available on the swedish amazon :(

Steve I have a question or maybe someone else can answer about warranty coverage. Scalper buys console by bulk one year ago, (warranty expired) someone buys off scalper does warranty begin when console is activated or UPC scanned as sold? Serial number need to verify?

Thanks for all the education. The other day I taught my son how to take apart and clean out our old busted Xbox controllers. So far we've rescued two.

Good afternoon.. Friend if possible, I just wanted to ask a question for me? I watched a video of yours about testing thermal paste on ps5.. So I use a kit that makes the ps5 cooler faster as I want the speed increased.. And you say in the video that in parts you can use thermal paste.. No case like the cooler of my ps5 the rotation i leave it accelerated, i could use thermal paste instead of liquid metal.. i think liquid metal is very dangerous. use thermal paste instead, since my ps5's cooler is sped up?

Seems Sonys repair/replace process differs from country to country. I have used them a couple of times over the years. Used them with my PS1 when I spilled water on it, also with my PS3 when it had the YLOD and with my PSVR headset when my rabbit decided to chew through the main wire. Over here in the UK, what they do or did is you contact them and tell them what your issue is, they tell you there is a single price you have to pay, regardless of what the issue is, and they send a courier to your house a few days later. You give them just your console without any cables or controller etc, and the courier then gives you a reconditioned console to the same spec as yours. So with my PS3, as it was an early fat model with the PS2 emulating software, that is exactly what I got back, not a later model without the emulation. It's a reasonably priced service as well.

So from what I can tell some worker at Sony broke the connector, and then gave up on the repair.
@oherman
@oherman Год назад
They could've fixed it by replacing the disc drive module and called it a day, and refurbish that drive with the ripped pins with a new pcb. Sometimes they really don't think things trough when they declare it unfixable.
@mehmetmetinbaki
@mehmetmetinbaki Год назад
Actualt they thought it through, but because selling entire units is more profitable than repairing broken ones they just refuse to do it.
