Sony DSC-HX80 Hands-On And Opinion

I had some quality hands-on time with the Sony DSC-HX80 digital camera. With improvements in smart phone cameras, manufacturers have been trying to differentiate between them. In this case, Sony has a tiny camera that has an EVF, huge zoom range, and a flip-up screen. The camera has a small 1/2.3" sensor and small aperture lens, but they try to make up for that in features.

Thanks, I appreciate the positive comments! Is there anything else you would like to see in these? I have limited time with the camera and can only film certain things, but I'm open to trying to include more if I can. I've been getting a few down votes with no mention of why they disliked them. Maybe they don't like the opinion aspect, not sure.

I have sony hx90, and this camera have insane quality, the sensor is not even a 1 inch sensor but quality in daylight is so insanly good, they look like from a professional Dslr or full frame camera, the amount of bokeh you archive when zooming in to 100mm or 200mm or more is really really good. It proved to my that my gear deosnt really matter. Your skill matters 99% and your gear 1%

@ScottJWaldron

Cameras like these have limited physical controls due to their small size. Shutter speed, aperture, and iso won't have dedicated buttons. To access something that changes "the time" you would need to be in a mode that offers you to manually adjust the exposure time such as shutter priority or full manual mode.

Looking to get my first camera for my channel would this be the best option if I was doing like mukbangs / food challenges or small talks?
@ScottJWaldron
@ScottJWaldron 3 года назад
No microphone input, "contrast detect" autofocus, 30 minute per video clip limit, and the maximum view in the lens isn't that wide. Consider using your smartphone if it is decent because you'd probably get a better result. Or save up to get a more serious camera like the Sony A6100, Canon M50 Mark II, or Fujifilm X-T200. My main suggestion would be the A6100 because it does not have a time limit per video clip which would work with long videos like mukbangs. There are very few cameras that don't have the clip limit. Of course if you go a really long time, you would need to get an AC adapter for the camera because batteries only last so long.

Hey I actually live in rockford illinois. Is there a way we could meet up I bought the camera at best buy and want to know the EZ way to fix all settings and have it ready for vlogging
@ScottJWaldron
@ScottJWaldron 4 года назад
I only used this camera for like an hour two years ago to film the video. You probably know more about the camera than I do at this point. I'd say start with a look through the manual and then just start filming. Try to produce a video one or two days a week and you should be a pro with it in no time. I'm kind of anti-social and already do a ton of free tech support through the channel constantly, so the idea of in-person tech support doesn't sound great, lol. Sorry man. Maybe someday if you stick with it and produce for your channel we can collaborate on something. It's a rough process. I'm not in a great place between some growth on the channel but still like 10 times too small to survive with this work.

I was curious so I looked at Best Buy's price on the HX80. Ahh, did you actually pay $320 for a HX80? That seems overpriced. It has a tiny sensor and contrast based autofocus. Something like a Canon M100 would be a lot better for vlogging quality wise. Although, both of them don't have a mic port so you can't use an external mic on either of them. B&H has the M100 for $350 right now. Not sure what camera would have a mic port at a low price. Maybe you could return that HX80. If not, the HX80 should be fine to get started. Though my main suggestion would be a simple recent smartphone to get started. It's all about content. MrBeast spent years iterating on ideas for videos before something clicked. I'm over 9 years in on this channel and still fighting to get more than 50 views on some of the videos I make. Details on the M100: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1368608-REG/canon_eos_m100_mirrorless_digital.html

@ScottJWaldron

Yes, it will record audio and video together. I might have mentioned "no mic jack" or something like that. This camera doesn't have that feature, but it will use its own internal microphone.

Thanks Scott. Quick question...immediately after snapping several pics in a row, the camera displays all the images (thumbnails) on the screen (says "processing") and delays my ability to continue snapping pics. Can you tell how to turn that function off? I've been searching the menu but can't figure it out. There was something that said "2 second display" but I wasn't able to turn it off...due to mode or something. Not even certain that is how to turn off the displayed thumbnails. Thanks for any help. I will check the manual again too. ;) update: i think the question i want answered....can you turn off the auto preview when in continuous shooting mode? seems silly to have preview images automatically pop up on display no matter what mode. seemingly it can be turned off in single mode shooting but not continuous mode.
@ScottJWaldron
@ScottJWaldron 2 года назад
The setting appears to be here and is called "auto review": Menu, Custom settings (cogwheel icon), Auto Review and then set it to off. helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1620/v1/en/contents/TP0000576801.html If that doesn't do what you want then the camera is probably hitting the buffer which tends to lock the camera in the case of Sony. Maybe try a faster memory card.
@mikegryn
@mikegryn 2 года назад
@@ScottJWaldron Thanks for taking time to respond. i had already found the info you linked to. my card is sandisk ultra plus 80mb/s . not sure about the buffer theory as it (in continuous mode) will "auto review" whether it's 2 images or 10. Since i don't have another faster memory card handy..i will experiment by reducing image size to see if it processes faster and turns off the auto review. guessing it won't because in the camera's menu it says can't turn off this function in continuous mode. i'll have to watch your video again to see if you snapped several pics in a row (continuous) or just single shots. i remember noting that the auto review thumbnails did not pop up. Thanks again. update: reducing image size didn't eliminate issue.
@ScottJWaldron
@ScottJWaldron 2 года назад
@@mikegryn If "off" for that setting shows the picture taken there is nothing you can do I assume. If it's some type of pop-up message that is another thing. I used the camera for an hour or two to make the video so you clearly have a lot more experience with it than me. My guess is that the camera is simply slow handling multiple photos at once. I doubt a better card would help that much unless yours is not a legit card (fakes are a thing sometimes). Continuous modes are not something I test with these camera shop videos because I don't want to put their equipment through excessive use.

@ScottJWaldron
@ScottJWaldron 4 года назад
Sounds like one or more of the settings is in manual mode. The maximum aperture on the lens changes through the zoom, so as you zoom more the hole (aperture) in the lens gets smaller. Look through the camera's manual about aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to learn how to change them. When in doubt, switch to the full automatic mode. I am on my phone, so not sure what the auto mode icon would look like.

First thanks for the super succinct and informative review! I'm looking to buy a decently priced camera mainly for simple video shooting, but I do need clear audio (video announcements, interviews, things like that). I saw in another comment that there is no separate jack for a mic, is the sound quality from the built in mic good enough in your opinion?
@ScottJWaldron
@ScottJWaldron 4 года назад
Sorry, I didn't use the camera enough to give you a valid opinion on the in-camera microphone. Producing quality videos isn't easy and audio is especially difficult. Learning about how to produce good results would help you a lot more than a specific piece of gear. That said, it will depend on what you consider good enough. The general idea with voice audio is getting the microphone close to the person. Either with a lapel mic+recorder (syncing that audio to the video afterward) or some type of boom arm with a mic on it. I use the boom arm approach and connect that mic to my canon eos m50 cameras because it is easier than syncing audio in software.

You would probably be better off with a recent smartphone if money is a consideration. If you want a dedicated camera and size isn't an issue I'd suggest the Canon EOS M50. If you need something small then the Sony RX100 III, IV or Va but those are expensive and don't have a microphone port. The lens on the HX80 is "slow" and the sensor isn't any bigger than a good smartphone, so I don't think low light performance would be great. It also don't have a microphone port.

@ScottJWaldron
@ScottJWaldron Год назад
I didn't try that. I'll say maybe and it depends on what you want to do with it. Look over the FAQ questions on Sony's website: www.sony.com/electronics/support/compact-cameras-dsc-hx-series/dsc-hx80/results?query=power That webpage says: "Sets whether to supply power via the micro USB cable when the product is connected to a computer or an USB device." and "If you use an AC-UD10/AC-UD11 AC adaptor (sold separately), power can be supplied to the product via USB cable even when the battery pack is not inserted." You can definitely have a static photography setup with something like and older used DSLR and a AC adapter DC coupler (replaces the battery). A DSLR will have significantly higher image quality too. Sites like KEH, MPB, UsedPhotoPro, and others sell used gear with a warranty usually. Are you talking photography or video? Video is a whole different beast. This won't be good. Maybe a GoPro that can take external power.

Sorry, action photo/video is not something I'm able to try out in these videos. Snowboarding and kayaking sound like extreme conditions. A camera like this has no form of weather resistance. There are waterproof and drop-resistant cameras around. I haven't used any lately, but the Olympus Tough series of cameras are well regarded (relatively speaking for small sensor cameras such as this Sony and most waterproof cameras). @@ScottJWaldron sorry, I should have been more clear in my question. I was asking about photo quality in sport mode for action shots. I'm trying to find a small point and shoot camera that fits easily in a pocket which will take clear action shots from a distance. I have an Olympus Tough series, but am not happy with the quality of the shots and with the zoom. When you're on the hill getting a shot of a friend coming down the slope, you end up with blurry photos and the person is so small they look like a dot. For kayaking, I would put the camera in a small Pelican case which would get it the waterproofing it needs.
@ScottJWaldron
@ScottJWaldron 4 года назад
If the person looks like a blurry dot at full zoom on a TG camera (100mm at full zoom), you are going to have some difficulties finding a camera that can do what you want and be small. Also, part of it is probably technique (using a faster shutter speed if the camera supports any level of control because your subject is moving quickly). The Sony RX100 VII has a 200mm eqv. lens, but that probably isn't enough range and it's pricey. There are very few small cameras with fast autofocus and a larger sensor. You could check out the Sony RX10 series, but those are a lot bigger.
@StevenErcolani
@StevenErcolani 4 года назад
@@ScottJWaldron the concerns you have are exactly what mine are. The Olympus TS camera I have is a problem because it only has a 4x zoom which isn't nearly enough. I felt that moving to a 30x zoom would be a lot better, but didn't know if the fast moving object would make it difficult to capture. I was looking at the RX10 series, but feel that it's just too big. I have an SLR that I use as my main camera, but need a very small camera for these types of shots. I might have to just buy one and give it a try to see what it can do.

I don't have any experience with editing video on phones. If you want to edit the video on phones instead of a computer then you are probably better off using a phone for vlogging. In that case look for a phone with a good camera on the screen side. What about your current phone is lacking when you try to make vlogs? I use my LG Stylo 3 to record for my IGTV channel ( example: instagram.com/tv/BliibyUlCSH/ ), which works okay. It's a cheap phone and quality isn't amazing, but the audio quality is decent. If you want to grow with a camera, maybe something like the Canon EOS M100 could be a good option to consider if you can spend more. It won't have the range of those two cameras with the starter lens (15-45mm), but it gives you a good starting point and it's pretty easy to use. It will allow you to use different lenses once you want to do that. The two all-in-one cameras are probably so similar that it's a toss up. They look extremely similar specification wise. You would need to get your hands on both of them to really decide on one or the other.

Yes, the RX100 is a 1" sensor camera with an f1.8-f2.8 lens (excluding the mk VI that has a longer and slower lens). The HX80 is a 1/2.3" sensor camera with a f3.5-6.4 lens. That means the RX100 sensor is 116mm^2 in size and the HX80 is 28.5mm^2. Plus, it has a lens that lets in less light. If image quality is a consideration at all then I'd always go with the RX100 series over any of their smaller sensor digicams. Besides that, the HX80 can't even make RAW formatted photos. I'm not sure where you could get the RX100 mkIII for the price of this camera, but even the original RX100 will take much higher quality photos than a digicam like this. I guess if having a compact camera with a long lens is your only consideration then do whatever feels right to you.

Yeah, I agree there. Smartphones have gotten really good!

I think it isnt. A) small tiny Smartphone lens (not as good quality lens) B) Not really any zoom range C) less manual control If you know how to juse your gear than you can do so much more with a camera tham any Smartphones

But for people that just simple want to take pictures, Smartphones are the way to go.

@Levian & Z Nachtschatten Depends on the phone. Some have larger sensors and faster aperture prime lenses compared to this at a given focal length. I can take DNG RAW photos with my older LG phone and the Open Camera app. This camera can't. To each their own, but phones have a lot of options and capabilities these days.

@@ScottJWaldron all smarphone cameras I have seen in the latest models either look artificial or fake, in my opinion smarphone Cameras haven't evolved since 2017 in terms of quality, except maybe the Xperia as the only (but only a bit in my opinion) for other manufacturers, all that really changed just a bit more lenses and zoom but the quality didn't actually change. Smartphone cameras will never replace camera for me. They always will look face if they put the camera in a slim smartphone body that hasn't even enough space to put atleast a decent size lens inside Smartphone cameras = they are horrible.
