You can also 'remove' the internal UV/IR filter externally with a magnet to get full-spectrum (or ultraviolet or infrared with appropriate filters) without permanently modifying the camera! The focus is a bit wonky, but it is definitely usable.

I bought this camera in 2004 for about £700 and I have used it ever since, Its 8 mega pixel I know and that's not much today but who cares if your only going to view on PC or the tv. I did print some photos of my daughter on 6x4 inch and that was more than enough. The quality of this camera is truly amazing. The colour is fantastic and the detail is rich. The zoom is great and the digital zoom amazed me. I thought there would be noise because that's how it appears on the screen but when previewed its so good. I will never sell this camera and absolutely love it.

EDIT: A short time later CMOS sensors started to outpace CCD sensors. They were cheaper and easier to make, though the first CMOS sensors weren't great by comparison. The megapixel race would be very slow and different if cameras continued using CCD sensors. The 505v was my first big-boy camera back then, and I upgraded to the 717. By the time the 828 came out, I was looking for a DSLR, which I got when the Canon 20D came out. Years later, I went back to Sony with the a77, and then the A7 series. It was hard to imagine that Sony would buy Minolta's camera line a few years after this camera came out.

The RGBE color filter array is rather brilliant. There is always an inherent problem with having twice as many Green pixels over the Red or Blue. Green, while it is efficient in doubling as a luminance layer, is still overrepresented and the accuracy of the other two colors can be difficult to properly replicate. Emerald (Cyan) is a genius way to solve this issue, as it is half Blue and half Green and also in negative Red can be calculated and distributed back into all three channels properly, on top of that, it has a higher luminance level than Green, so you can achieve greater dynamic range and lower noise levels. Sony really ought to bring this back.

Dude, I have an F-828 as well! Bought it at the end of last year as an impulse online buy off Amazon. This baby is truly a marvel of camera design and surprisingly delivers sharp images that is so good, you wouldn't notice it's from what is today, a dinosaur digital camera. Will have to try the "real" image mode a little more then compare to standard mode, though. Spring and summer are about kick in and it'll be a good time to bring out the old girl for a walk soon!

I own a couple of F828 in the past, they are amazing cameras along with f505 F515 and even sony r1. I am a collector and possess all the legendary 8mp above including canon pro1.

I own three of the 8mp bridge cameras mentioned in this review: This Camera (the f828), the Canon Powershot Pro1 and the Minolta DiMage A2. A lot of reviewers tout how great the Pro 1 is and IMO it doesn't hold a candle to the f828. The AF is slow, and the mechanical zoom vs motor driven zoom on the f828 is so much faster and smoother then how janky the zoom on the Pro 1 is. The lens on the f828 has a lot less Chromatic aberration to deal with as well. In spite of Canon claiming the Pro 1 had an "L" series lens I found the lens on the f828 to be overall a lot sharper with less distortion. The downside to all three as you mention is that they are laggy to use especially if trying to take photos in RAW format. But if I had to pick one camera from this year to shoot that wasn't a DSLR (as the Canon Rebel also came out in 2003) this would be my top pick.

I have a mint F828, and I love handling it and using it, it's a unique camera, to me it's a work of engineering art in itself, and yes the images it produces are just so good, slow to use, but that stops you rushing, dare I say, I'm going to anyway, the F828 is an artisan camera that demands you to think before hitting the shutter button, great video, loved watching, many thanks.

Thank for sharing your review. I just bought F828 3 month ago and very satisfied with the image color. Thought the raw saving speed is very slow and image quality is a little bit soft. But its a 2004 camera! Im very happy buying this camera.

Shooting in "real" mode in jpeg actually looks flat. I find shooting this camera in jpeg + standard with contrast and saturation boosted gives a more pleasing result.

Have you followed up with the comparisons to the other 8 MP cameras?

The video is informative, but PLEASE turn down the background music, all I hear is the low budget suspense movie soundtrack.

Sony needs to bring out new prosumer, or mirrorless DSLR, with swivel body cámaras… they were fun versatile, still have my DSC-F717

If camera manufacturers have learnt anything in the past 20 years, its that photographers are a very conservative bunch. Maybe at times with good reason, 50 or more years of camera ergonomic design came to a consensus on what was best, so the successful DSLR and mirrorless bodies closely resemble their film ancestors. But the sensor technology inside can be radical, with Sony, Foveon and Fujifilm all trying to improve on the Bayer mosaic. But its a bit like the PC/Microsoft story: Bayer was first to market and became dominant, others - even if better - struggle to be more than single brand alternatives.

SO SLOW CAMERA. The first digital camera I purchase. When I shoot an anniversary ...I saw its was impossible..to shoot action... Then I change to Canon Rebel ...the first Rebel back then....My first DSLR.

Reminds me of my NikonD200. The Emerald color might be a marketing gimmick. Mode 1 & Mode 3 are your standard profiles. Mode 2 is for heavy post edit; AdobeRGB only. Mode 1 & Mode 3 can use sRGB and AdobeRGB. Mode 1 is for people. Mode 3 is for landscape and things. Mode 3 also looks like AdobeRGB just in the sRGB color profile. Mode 3 is the equivalent of the REAL mode in that camera. It's very useful for street and everyday shooting. Just the jpgs give you a ton of latitude, even beyond many current cameras. I tested my D200 vs a Z6 & Z50, the D200 won imo. New cameras have better high iso, high resolution and video. Older cameras have better IQ, color seperation and sensor speed.

I bought one of the first ones shipped to the UK and really liked the design and lens. I found the small sensor rather noisy above ISO200 and specular highlights showed colourful artefacts,. Traded it in for an R1 which was a better camera with an APS-C sensor capable of truly fine image quality. Great review.

The images could be a bit noisy, but I travelled all over the world with this camera, and took some of my best photos with it-photos that would have required carrying several lenses and an SLR. The resolution is amazing.

I think rawtherapee can actually open those files if I remember right. Also, in a program called "dark table", there may be support. That's in Linux though. Microsoft also made available raw image support codecs not to long ago. I was pulling raw images out of the camera, but they had a redish tinge to them. Had to correct for that in post.
