Hi Patrick, I guess you already sold your FS100 which is a little heart breaking, cause you were one of the few doing the step by step experimental job on this camera. I am working on some personal comparisons on my own at last. By having same scene and same settings on pp's and just chaning the color modes they seem to change some hues, some luminances and some saturation. Cinematone1 seems more blue overall, with more saturation. Cinematone2 makes greens and reds darker and less saturated, also makes reds more orange and orange brighter, cyan goes bluer, blue tints a little bit red and seems a little bit purple. Pro looks like standard, but a bit less saturated and darker. ITU looks like standard a bit lighter and more saturated, more noticeable on reds and oranges. Color Depth seems to change luminance of individual colors, so it could also be added to the equation. I believe GLog only works If you already like that look and don't want to change it a lot in post. Also, you can loose a lot of detail on darker areas, but I believe thats why Frank Glencairn said you had to change black levels per scene if I remember correctly. I guess there is no short answer nor overall picture profile with this camera and we have to learn every gamma and color mode detail since we are a little limited on grading with an 8-bit compressed codec. I would not want to use anything with Cinematone2 (like G-log) on a Job where I have no control of lighting. For that I would rather use PP off, AB range, your profile or some invention of mine with Standard Gamma, Standard/Pro/ITU Color, Saturation -4. I have tested a little bit with detail but can't really see much of a difference. Thanks for the video and for all the testing btw.
I honestly really miss the camera. I spent so much time with it building the profiles that I know it in and out. now with my FS5, I feel like I'm starting over. While I love the flexability of SLOG-3 and the codec on this camera, I know how to expose the FS100 and knew exactly what the picture was going to look like. I don't have that feeling with the FS5 yet. I honestly may buy another FS100 just for that reason. Time will tell.
Thank you sir for sharing, i really appreciate it. I will watch again n again until i understand. Thank you so much. For that i subscribe for your channel
how do you have the rode mic plugged into this camera and are you able to use onboard controls. I've seen xlr to 3.5 converters I'm assuming that's what your using.
I’ve used converters in the past, but I’m not using it here. This is with the newer 14” shotgun mic. It’s xlr to xlr. Super cheep, and has OK performance.
The main issue is that the rodemicro, along with most other similar rca based mics require a 5v supply of power. Newer dslr and mirrorless cameras will provide that. The fs100, because it uses xlr, is using a different standard for audio. The Issue is that xlr doesn’t provide enough voltage to power the microphone.. that is, until you enable phantom power, which is too much power and could blow the microphone. Rode sells a converter, the VXLR+, which will convert xlr with phantom power to the voltage that the videomicro requires. They also offer another product called the vxlr that doesn’t handle phantom power which can be used with microphones that are self powered(batteries). I built my own converter for non powered mics and got a converter like the vxlr+ and had no issues with them, but I prefer xlr as it’s just more robust overall. I had issues with the cables and my videomicro just failing on me if it moved or twisted in the wrong way, but that’s the cable, not the microphone. Hope this answers the question!
I’m currently recording internal for personal projects where I don’t need the extra bitrate, but customarily, I record externally to prores with either one of the ninja variations of the Blackmagic video assist.
Thanks for the video. I've been using this camera since it came out and have tried every pp out there and made up a bunch as well. I'm currently using the camera for livestreaming so I'm really looking for a pp that's great right out of camera. I made the mistake of using a canon 5d mkiv with a 50mm 1.2 and fell completely in love with the look and colors straight out of camera and I haven't been able to find anything on the fs100 that gets me as excited anymore. Any ideas?
Find a good photographic lens from the film era and it will shine on the FS100. That alone more than makes up for it's flaws, in my opinion. Of course it's a subjective opinion, but that makes it fun, too.
Honestly, take my FSLog profile, increase the saturation, change the black levels from low/mid to high and make it +7 and you should be good to go. Expose so that the highlights are never clipping and you should be more than thrilled with the image!
Depends on your needs, but if you aren’t sold on the c100, I would recommend the fs100. The c100 has a lot of good features and a good image, but in terms of functionality, the ability to adapt any lens you want to the fs100 is a big selling point, especially if you’re just starting out and building out your rig. Vintage lenses are amazing.
