It takes someone who's tried all the gear to inform us on how little one really needs and what a great time we are in to make something. And it doesn't take a Michael Bay drone move, to make an informative video still look dope as hell in a hotel room. Thank you for your thoughts and work!
Good explanation of depth of field. It's not always talked about when comparing full frame and APS-C. Something I didn't realize when I jumped from Super 35mm to Full Frame and shooting at f1.4 and f1.2. It is definitely noticeable depth of field. But for those who are invested in lots of APS-C glass, the FX-30 is a great option. I finally stopped shooting crop sensors this year and I'm enjoying the look and feel of full frame for both video and photos.
I'd be happy to trade half of those megapixels for better rolling shutter, better lowlight, less 4k120p crop, and possibly a mechanical shutter. But regardless for video, it is still way better than any current Sony apsc offerings. For hybrid work, I'd still go with A7IV as my first camera.
For those like me who are APSC Sony shooters for video, we all dreamed of having 4k 60 and 4k 120. It took a long time but we finally got it and it has a fan so it doesn't overheat. 🔥 With regards to depth of field, the sigma trio 1.4's and all the aspc offers enough depth of field to get a cinematic look, they are amazingly sharp, light and portable. Is there a difference, yes but it's so marginal that I doesn't really matter in the real world. Great video buddy, well done 🎉🎉🎉
@@TheSunnySuttons indeed, I own the 11-20 and 17-70 and feel like I robbed a bank with them in my kit. Such great coverage. But would love to eke out a bit more DOF
I’m glad you mentioned working with primes and the temptation to zoom in and out on zoom lenses. We’re all guilty of it, but I definitely resonate with that struggle. I find when I’m stuck on a prime. I work so much better. Nate
Just came across your page today. Love the flow and also love your perspective. I shoot with A7IV as only camera. Turning more towards video though I still do photos. I am needing a second camera as for more jobs are requesting it and I was glad I had waited. I could obviously use another full frame like FX3 which I had eye on. But I am so used to shooting in 4k60 crop that it does not bother me at all buying an APC. I really agree with you on even professionals can use this in their bag…it is far from an entry level videographer if they don’t know anything about settings and frame rates their footage will still look like crap. I also use my Sigma 14-24 2.8 a lot ! With the specs you listed, this lens does wonders for me in cropped mode for A7Iv. I bought for real estate purposes and now have used it a lot in my reels for gyms, and even weddings I’ve shot a whole wedding with it before in cropped mode 4k60 as they were on a 4 hour lower budget I stuck with this lens and my drone and I got perfect results for focal length and lower light. So we’ll done on this review, I pre ordered mine and looking forward to adding it as my BCam !
subscribed! awesome video! I am looking for a hybrid camera. some basic street photography and some sport videography and RU-vid videos. I would need some slow mo shots for the sports. What would be the best option between the fx30 and Sony a7iv? would greatly appreciate your help and opinion.
Hey bubba, I’m trying to decide on Fx3, Sony a7siii or a fx30, I’m a wedding videographer & also plan to be a fishing RU-vid videographer as well. What camera would be the best overall? I’m coming from a a7iii now
Very helpful video for people to understand aperture & focal length adjustments for having APS-C format. And how to properly pair FF & APS-C lenses to match. I’m picking up an FX30 as my Aroll cam with my a7iv.
Quick question: which battery brand would you recommend for the FX 30 ? I read a review on SmallRig battery, and they said FX-30 doesn’t allow 3rd party batteries. Should I get an original Sony battery or third party is fine and if so, which brand would you recommend ? Thank you.
love this channel and how real you keep it Vu. I saved money buying the fx30 instead of the fx3. I film a lot of football so all i did was switch to my sony 24-105 from the 70-200 and that fixed everything filming with that crop sensor. Same thing with basketball I film with the sigma f2.8 24-70 and switched to the 16-35mm. problems solved
I shoot on a A6500 and always hear people trashing on APS-C cameras, I have the Sigma trio, the tamron 17-70- and 70-180 2.8 Zooms and get get results I am happy with as a hobbyist , i cant get as shallow depth of field but you use what you have. Nice to know if i need it for some filming I can rent the FX30 and use all my current gear
The dof is faster to explain that the only things that affect it is distance focal length and fstop. Sensor size doesn't change depth of field. Reducing the focal length or stepping back to make an "equivalent shot" is what makes the dof change
Love the available apsc glass. I already had the sigma 16mm,23,Mm, 30mm, and 56mm f1.4 lenses before I got the fx30 I also had the tamron 11-20 and 17-70 f2.8s. I used these with my old a6400 and woth my A7IV bodies. It’s so nice to carry light fast primes. And they help with the low light 💡 as well.
I really like this video. As i shoot Photo and video on Sony a6500 and i feel sometimes i feel the pressure to go full frame. Realistically though it's actually more than i need at the moment with the work that I'm doing and I'm able to match that look even in low light a lot of the time. Only thing id say i do want is dual card slots 🤷♂️
Thanks for this video, it pretty much verified my thinking. I will buy the X30 , also getting the Sigma 16mm 1.4 for the beginning. Keeping my Sony a73 with full frame glass for photo jobs.. Very excited about the price point for X30, but also the amount of used Apsc glass available, this will save money in the long run. Or I just probably buy more glass, cos I can 🙃
That's what I'm saying! I pre-ordered two of these. Although I am selling my A7SIII in exchange for it hehe. I always felt the A7SIII was more than what I needed for the price. This FX30 really seems like my camera. I'm already looking at lenses haha. Thanks again for the genuine word Vu!
I tell you what. I've been on the a7SIII and a7RIV for a bit, but I'm excited for the FX30 for one huge reason. The return of the use of my favorite lens ever.... the Sigma 18-35mm. haha. I came from shooting Panasonics with Metabones adapters and this is going to be so rad.
*I love my APS-C a6400 and I just bought the New 11mm f1.4 which from what I've seen looks AMAZING on the a6400 and I still have my Sigma 16mm f1.4 BUT I might switch that too either the Sony 10mm-20mm f4 or the Sigma 18-50mm or the Tamron equivalent. The FX30 is going to replace my a6400 as my Video Camera for the One All to Be all because the A7S III is beyond my reach cause the A7C was my go too until THIS camera Came out, Nice explanation*
I shoot everything at f5.6-f8 as i want more in focus than just one eye. Most movies are not shot faster than 2.8 on a super35(apsc ) sensor which is f4 on full frame. The bokee obsession comes from the photography world. A fx30 is more than good enough for most people.
Agree with everything you said, and I think the fx30 is a great camera, the only downside compared to the FF cameras would be more noise at higher iso. Cheers.
@@nVuFilms maybe could u make a 10 things you can’t live without? I’m currently shooting with smart phones and action cameras but I’m still trying to find an honest recommendation that I could use for a photo camera and dedicated video camera 📹 I’m fortunate to be able to save up for the right setup what do you recommend for me? Thanks 🙏 I appreciate it! I know it’s just for youtube and tiktok but my experience with shooting weddings using a7s and canon cameras in the past I do have an itch to shoot on something mirrorless although it does get confusing sometimes when companies promote an fx3 or canon R7 or R5c or now fx30 but what is your opinion and favourite to use based on your experience I just miss shooting photos on full frame it’s so enjoyable for me the experience is amazing and I’ve been using crop lately since my Nikon d700 broke down nothing really excites me these days it’s all the same camera different body, but I haven’t tried the sony cameras so I’m curious 👀 Thanks in advance for your honest feedback
I am considering it to supplement my a7r4. For still composition a high res ff has its advantages. For video macro work aps-c becomes an advantage - also @120f. The rocker set to clear image zoom can be very useful working with primes. I will wait to see what the a7r5 offers and whether its better to update or take the fx30.
@@nVuFilms yes. That's why I said it can't be compared. But at same time I don't think they would want to kill A7siii by giving 120 fps. And 61 megapixel at 120 fps would be too much 😅 unless they crop that too.
I want to be educated yes but also entertained. A strong opinion is entertaining, which you have given us. As soon as the RU-vidr starts with " whatever works best for you" I turn the video off. I can get that same opinion from a thousand other RU-vidrs.
Wait, so I understand if the depth of field equivalent "Result" is different based on the crop factor for APSC vs. FF. But the Light gathering is the same? For example f2.8 in APSC Lenses will also get the same low light "Result" as the f2.8 FF Lenses? I just sold my a6600 and wondering if I should get FX30 or Full frame. Because the light gathering is really kinda a deal breaker for me.
Maybe with the announcement of the fx30 that sigma might consider making DC DN versions of the 18-35 & 50-100 for E and L-mount! Would also be their first mirrorless Art lenses for crop systems
I always reference Sails Chong who regularly shoots at F11, F16, F22, etc. on medium format. "Location Scouting" is by far the biggest weakness for modern photographer's and videographers. He regularly shoots stopped down even up to F22, b/c he chooses good locations.
@@nVuFilms Not just landscapes, and I don't blame them necessarily. Many wedding venues are boring. Dude has a big team which puts him on a different scale. He shoots like that even in the street. It's almost guaranteed the avg. Wedding photographer has there lens set to wide open or F2.8 unless they're taking a group photo.
This really works for me. At weddings, my A7Siii lives on the gimbal with the GM 35, but I don't think the AF is reliable enough at 1.4 so I keep it at 1.8 or above. I just need to switch that 35 to a 24mm 1.4 and I have the same camera on my gimbal and I will be replacing an A7III with an SIII for $1800 minus what I sell the 7III for. That's a great deal.
I found the same to be true at 1.4 with the 35mm. I can see the background jumping. I’m wondering if the a7siii ever gets breathing compensation if it would fix that.
Also shallow DOF in most cases is a crutch for creatures who don't scout for good locations. If you were in a beautiful location would you blur it to oblivion? Probably not.
I agree with you totally about sensor sizes and matching lenses. Douchbags abounded over the last 2 days with the launch of the Sony FX30 ... Where did all these so-called RU-vid experts come from all of a sudden! Where did the 'great beginner camera/cinema camera' labels even come from because its a $1800 APS-C/Super 35mm sensor camera ... when the film industry professionals go to work everyday with industry-standard Super 35mm Arri cameras and appropriate manual focus lenses. Oh the horror of it all! The Sony FX30 appears to be great, and capable $1800 tool for any professional or wannabe professional to keep business costs down and get the job done.
You'll never come across any filmmaker saying an Arri Alexa Mini is a bad camera. If it's good enough for Roger Deakins it's good enough for 99.99999% of videographers who shoot digital. Cost isn't even that big a factor these days to rent especially if you know what you're shooting and want to create.
Great review and chat as always Vu, fx30 is an exciting camera.. I’ve been wanting to upgrade from my FS5 m2 to something smaller I’m thinking I could just throw my speed booster on the super 35 and it be just like a full frame but for half the price lol ..
You can say the same thing about A7IV, it has 4k in crop mode while still having the option to go FF if you want. And the 4k crop mode on the A7IV is downsampled from a higher resolution as well. And it is only a little bit more $ at the end of the day.
@@robertconrad6802 I guess your are right, but there is no 4K 120 or 1080P 240 on the A7IV. Plus since there is an additional crop in 4K 120, it’s more like a 2X crop which gets you even closer to wildlife for video . 👍 Geraldundone said even though the 4K 120 has a massive crop, the quality is still very good.
@@chinitopinoy1726 That seems like a pretty small upside given you are giving up FF performance for low light/ bg separation and a viewfinder. I am pretty sure you have to really value the xlr handle and mounting points for this to pencil over the A7IV in most situations. You make a valid point, but I doubt in the real world this would be better than the A7IV. Also, cropping into apsc even more? at a certain point you are using FF glass but getting MFT results. You will be wishing you had a mft camera with a faster mft lens to make up for the noise you are introducing at the point imo. I think Sony designed this for cinema nerds on a budget, and that is where this is going to pencil.
@@robertconrad6802 I see what you are saying. I like to do a lot of wildlife slowmo so the extra reach and slowmo in 4K and 1080P 240 is beneficial for me.
Thanks for the video. Maybe I will wait for the a6X00/ a7X00 instead of getting an FX30. I just can't believe that Sony doesn't put waveforms (nor false color) in their "cinema" cameras. (But, then again, they put a full-size HDMI port in it, and my full-frame Panasonic S5 only has one of them micro HDMI ports, so there is that.) Also I would need at least auto-exposure bracketing in stills, and it SEEMS like that isn't available (none of the reviews mentioned whether autoe-exposure bracketing is available or not). Just another thought: If Sony had removed the mechanical shutter then they might have had room to squeeze in built-in neutral density filters.
@@marinrealestatephotography At least for 5 axis IBIS. 5 axis can't coexist with ND filters. Cameras like the Ricoh GRiii has 3 axis IBIS and ND filter together.
Very interesting. However, having seen some reels, it appears 'cinematic' enough for most beginners and has all the facilities you would need to become proficient in grading etc. And it is affordable enough to dip your toes in.
Good video. I might get a crop frame camera in addition to my a7SIII because I like to shoot a lot of action video and everything stays in focus easier if you have a smaller sensor. That’s why a lot of really expensive pro sports video cameras have very small sensors.
I'm a Sony Fanboy, but got to disagree with you on the fx30 being an amazing camera. Sure, it's a solid piece of technology and has a couple of nice features. But as soon as you face some suboptimal conditions when filming like low light, you'll hit the limitations very fast. And then, you'll start going for workarounds with some average results. But hey, for beginners, it sure is a decent option.
Most cinema cameras actually don't handle low light well... At all. RED for example. That is why you LIGHT the scene. Also... Most "NIGHT" scenes are filmed during the day and graded to look like night time. Low light capabilities does not = "professional". Also poor low light performance does not = "beginner" camera. Honestly comments like that tells me you know absolutely Jack shit about cameras. Fx30 actually performs well in low light... Just not good compared to a7siii. But nothing does well compared to a7siii.
Theres nothing wrong with super35. Its literally the most used sensor size in hollywood. If its good enough to multimillion dollar movies, its good enough for us.
Most movies/commercials traditionally used longer focal lengths where it is easy to achieve a shallow depth of field, but the more modern ones experiment with wide angle lenses a lot, and there you need a big sensor or crazy fast lens like Zeiss Superspeeds to match the same DOF.
@@nVuFilms Probably for many, but not all projects. I‘m just saying it is nice to have the extra capability when you need it, and that it matters more once you use the more extreme focal lenghts.
A problem with reviewing a camera purely from specs is that it just isn't everything. ZV-E10 for example has 1080p@60 and 120fps which sounds great on paper. However the fullhd quality from that camera is just utter garbage and even worse than the 1080p from the Zv1 for example.
@@nVuFilms I could use the same term and say "1080p from Sony is always legit" and that statement would've been true until the day the zv-e10 actually came out and we saw how garbage the footage was. Somehow though fullhd had been perfect this far, even in ZV1 now it somehow got ridiculously bad. So in a similar way I'm personally sceptical for the 4K 120fps until proven otherwise by other creators who are not paid/sponsored by Sony for the pre-launch campaign.
@@AndreasSippus zve10 and a6xxx HD isn't great at all. So I'll wait and see how good it is on the fx 30 new sensor. However.... Sony A7IV 1080p in APSC mode looks like 4k.
I am so mad at Sony, I jumped to a7Siii even when it was too much for my budget. Obviously I do not have any complaints, I am not that stupid but if this camera was made only a little sooner I would have such great use for my apsc lenses. just imagine shooting real estate with 4k 60 which is downsampled 6k image. On top of that this camera has even more features than a7Siii.
@@nVuFilms Yes, obviously I don't regret my decision. a7Siii is a low light monster but my bank account was not too happy as I already invested so much money into apsc glass 😀
Nailed this a-roll lighting! And in a hotel room! The FX30 coverage was nauseating- it’s getting so predictable that every RU-vidr drops their “amazing new something” review at the same time with the same talking points. Love that Sony keeps releasing options, but I don’t see any reason for the FX30 to exist.
The brand new - and very expensive - Alexa 35 has their first new sensor in 12 years- and it is Super 35 in size! ($80,000 too). So Super 35 is far from a 'toy' size (though I have always felt MFT sensors were a bit too limiting) .... I have a full frame DSLR/mirrorless and rarely shoot wide open- very few times do I desire that narrow a DOF...
It has electronic shutter bro... The only time that shutter becomes and issue is with flickering led lights and a shitty building. Even then, you can kill it with flash
@@CO8848_2 you shoot a lot of sports? If so yea def bad. Wait a month. They are going to use that sensor for an APSC photo version. Kind of like how they did fx3 and a7siii. There is the fx30 and a6or7xxx
@@nVuFilms Yes, my kids. Not even that fast, I am waiting for the next aps-c hybrid flagship from Sony. This is more a cinema camera, but I do understand professionals would love this fantastic package at $1800.
Too expensive. Comparing with a7iv, the a7iv is a no brainer better than this and can do 4k24 scalled from 7k in full frame.plus is a good full frame stills camera
