Better late than never for this review! 😂 Hope you enjoy it! P.S. The FX30 footage was colored with my presets, get them here - courses.whoismatt.com/luts
I only use Cine EI with my Fx30 and I can tell you my first day using it…it was confusing as hell until I saw Sonys video on what Sony EI is really for. In short…it keeps you strictly at only it’s one of its 2 base ISOs. Cannot divert from that in Cine EI. The change of ISO put simply is “FAke”. It’s for monitoring purposes as we are really supposed to expose +2 stops over exposure which for monitoring purposes…isn’t ideal. So it forces you to use your NDs for proper exposure, rather than increasing ISO away from its base. It’s just to keep you at bass, then to lower your ISO for “monitoring” to know what your recording will look like in post when you lower that exposure. Once I got the hang of it…I noticed nearly zero noise I’m my shadows and blacks because I’m properly expose, while also at only base ISO
I was on the fence about buying this camera before your review, but you know what, you convinced me, sir. Sony has found a new member of its ecosystem.
Because is not, little more expensive a7iv full frame, you can make photos, full frame, better low light, looks better for video :) oh sorry and and you got viewfinder. Fx30 is great but price should be around 1100/1300 is way to expensive what you get :) Hmm 🤔
Hey man, thanks for talking about the overall conclusion in the beginning of the video. I hate having to wait till the end for recommendations, and having a good opinion about it from a pro at the start of the video helps me better informed through the rest of it. You deserve my like!!
Awesome option for second shooter. Making portraits will be greate with 85mm 1.8 viltrox. But we alreade purchase A7IV instead of our A7III and stick with a6400 for a standalone. Not enough budget to replace it with newer FX30 in this year 🤔
My peers all recommend Canon cameras to me for their color , but I think the camera look of the Sony FX30 is fantastic. As long as your exposure is perfect, there's hardly any need for post-processing adjustments, especially with S-Cinetone.
Been waiting for this review! Fell in love with this camera the moment it was announced but unfortunately it's out of stock and backordered almost everywhere and the ones that are being sold are $400+ over MSRP 😞
Hang in there, scalpers have arrived to the camera world, the same scummy lazy people that buy all gaming consoles are now buying popular camera models to do the same, just look at the fuji X100v, zero stock but countless for sale on Facebook market for a premium, every time i see one i report the seller lol
More in depth cine I vídeo mode explanation would be great! I'm planing to always record in 4k 120p, adding the 11mm 1.8 to the line for wider shots, all of the other lenses will suit...
Hello Matt, i have A7 III for wedding videos. Is FX30 a good upgrade to replace A7 III ? Or is it better to go for A7 IV ? I made videos vith A6500 so crop is not an issue for me. Thank you.
I’m in the same boat! I want something that can do 4K 50p and trying to decide between a7iv or FX30. I think eventually I will buy both as I think they will complement each other, but for now I’ll get the fx30. Thanks Mediamore for asking and thank Matt for the content!
Very good review. I think it’s important that people that actually use these cameras in real events speak out. It’s very different from studio charts and walks in the backyard
Not a new filmmaker neither a FX3 or A7S3 owner but a GH5 owner here looking to update his camera and I think you finnaly convince me to purchased the FX30 ! Of course the FX3 is better with the FF sensor, better low light capability's and no crop in 120fps but.... 4700€ here in France. The FX30 + a 16-55mm 2.8 G Master + Ronin RS3 comes at 3900€... So I think I found my 2023 camera ! Thanks !
@@sergionunez4277 Hi Sergio, I indeed bought the FX30 in February 2023. I'm very happy with it. The point I was most worried about was low light performances but I've never been I a situation where it became a problem to me, specially after filming with a GH5 for so many years...
I have a Sony A6400 with a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 lens and I'm planning to start shooting talking head videos indoors. I'm considering replacing the Sony A6400 with either the Sony FX30, Sony A6700, or Sony A7C II, but I'm totally confused about which one to choose. I haven’t shot any videos yet. Could you please guide me on which camera would be the best option?
Samyang xp f1.2 glass + speed booster.... I remember when the 5d2 couldn't shoot clean above iso 1250. If we could make it work then, well, people starting now are spoiled for choice.
thankyou matt for the video.. Was waiting for this one.. Can u make a video about the lenses that are best for fx30? like sigma 16mm f.14, sigma 30mm f1.4 and sony 11mm f.8 etc.
Run this camera for 20min then put your nose up to the cooling vent? You can feel all that heat being moved out of the camera. It's a shockingly large amount of heat. The FX3 is the same. This makes you wonder....how does the A7S-III and other cameras deal with that much heat "trapped" in those non-fan bodies? Seriosly....ever seen how large the FX6 cooling system is using the same FX3/S-III sensor? That's a LOT of heat to trap in a body with no fan!
What do you mean by best "budget" camera? I use it alongside my FX3 and prefer it in every way except very low light. It should be considered by many filmmakers regardless of budget.
i just bought this camera for weddings to go along with my A7IV's. I was waiting for this video. Thanks you for this now I don't have to make the video myself i'll just refer people to this
I was very tempted by this camera until the A7R5 came out. The new rear screen, improved ibis, and auto WB thats actually useable, make it a difficult decision to by FX30 at the moment. As Ive got a feeling these features will end up in the A7C II.
It's seems weird to me that Sony chooses lower resolution on their full-frame FX3 but higher resolution on their apsc FX30, unless they are just too lazy not to recycle the old sensor found on 4-year-old Fuji XT3. If FX30 had a low 12MP sensor, it'd have much faster readout and less 4k120p crop, which would also hurt their full-frame line.
What would recommend the Sony A7iii instead of the FX30 for wedding filming or possible other low light scenarios? I am looking at the A7iii or the A7c or the blackmagic pocket cinema 6k but the BM may not be best for a beginner like me. I really love the fx30 and that it be cheaper for lenses. But i will be doing mostly weddings and curious around what camera would be best for me. The three I mentioned are used cameras i found for decent price but the fx30 would be new or used from amazon or best buy. Was also looking at a Sony A6600 but was leaning more towards a full frame. Wondering your thoughts around the options i mentioned. The fx30 is more expensive off the hop for the body only but just struggling choosing!Unless you have a other suggestions. Please help🙏
Just came across this comment and I thought I’d give you my thoughts. I have a7iii - although it’s a full frame camera the colours on my fx3 is so much better. For video of definitely go with fx30. Also a7iii has time limit (29min). It’s my c cam which I’m thinking of selling and buying fx30 to pair with my fx3 and Zv-e1. I’ll still be using FF lenses cause I’m future I may upgrade it again. Lenses last longer than cameras lol. Another personal advice. I had just switched from BMPCC6KPRO and 4k. I found it to be very hard to film whilst manual focusing and certain shot I simply could not pull off… and although BRAW is amazing codec, files are way too large imo.
Hey brother ❤I just bought the fx30, I’m not a photographer just for video purpose, now I’m kinda regretting that for a savings of few hundred dollars I missed out on a full frame sony camera? I kind of worried if fx30 is future proof as of today
Filming a 3rd wedding in July. Been using a6300, A7R II, and A7S. I'm thinking I'll replace the 6300 with this and it will be my main. I can't keep getting away with weddings on 1 card slot bodies
Matt, I don’t film in slog3, I use picture profile 1. Does the dual base ISO only apply when filming at the highest bitrate possible and slog3? Thanks!
I really love this camera. Video isn't my main work and this is more or less what I would love for a dedicated video camera. But I also have an a7iv and I don't really see that this is better in comparison. For a dedicated video camera I still would look to a fx3 or a7s3 to get a real benefit for video work. Especially for the 4k120 in ff
@@ra1111 I did compare at all to the Higher end cameras. I said for me personally it's not the right fit if I would buy it for a dedicated video camera because I already have an a7iv. If it had 4k120 in s35 it would be a different story
Bravo ! Excellent review, many thanks Matt ! I now have another page to my dilemma. I'm a wedding photographer who is offering (beginning in 2023) photo+video coverage. My current kit is fuji xt3+23/35/56. For photos i'm happy with the results for video in stressful moments i'm a little worried about the performance of the bodies. I had planned on changing some lenses with year and going with 18/33/85 (viltrox) for photo. My debat is simple... stay with Fuji and upgrade camera bodies (xt5 maybe) and accept that it's there will still be issues with auto focus or... move to Sony for some or all of my work. The obvious solution seems to be the a7iv, but you video has me wondering if the solution isn't a fx30 as a B-cam to complete my fuji kit.
Does someone have any experience in shooting video with both fuji and sony side by side ? How hard is it to match the colors of the two ? Many thanks for any suggestions you may have, Nico
one last question before I buy it....if I used an external monitor with the FX30 (not a recorder like the Ninja V-just a monitor) and I press REC in 4k, do BOTH screens continue to display video at the same time? with the camera LCD showing me the display info but the external monitor just a clean image? I ask because with my a6400 both screens stay on but only for HD recording- the moment I record in 4k, the camera's LCD goes to black-no video but I can see the display info on the camera's LCD but NO VIDEO...is the FX30 the same? I hope not as I would like to use a small 5" external LCD when using my gimbal...thanks. PS I wish I could come to your video courses!I'm in Toronto Canada
I find some stuff that didn't know yet about this camera so thanks for the little tips you mentioned. I think the FX30 within get any further... is the fx3 for poor/cheaper creators xd such good features for the apsc line. Great!
Last but no less important: New sub! love the part when you compared to your first canon. It reminds me to my old Nikon 3200 which has the same features.. Now Im working with an a6400. Hopefully I can afford the fx30 In the next months 😅
I am a commercial videographer and I shoot weddings with a RED as my A camera and an FX30 100% living on a gimbal. The FX30 is a great camera, best IBIS Sony has to offer in a camera. Only downside to the FX30 is the highlight retention is not good.. make sure to keep highlights at +1.3EV at the very most. Footage caught above +1.3EV the highlighted image areas nearly unusable for professional results.
If I don't use simultaneous recording (rebel) and I put my larger but slower card (v30) in slot 1 and my faster but smaller card (v90) in slot 2... is that a good strategy for only filling my v90 with footage my v30 is too slow to capture? Like, the default recording procedure is to fill card 1 first so if I put my fastest card there, I'm thinking I'll just fill that with my normal footage and be full when I need it but if I put my fastest card in slot 2, when the camera determines that my first card can't handle it, it will use my fastest card in slot 2. Is that accurate? Does it work?
Watching your video got me excited about getting the FX30! It finally came in yesterday but it seem like the firmware it came with only let’s me shoot in 23.98, 29.97, 59.94 and 119.88 😅 I shoot with an A7iv and now I’m worried that I won’t be able to sync a multi cam since their frame rate will be different 🤦🏻♂️ now I think I need to return it cause my frame rates won’t match and drift is a possibility. What are your thoughts? Would appreciate your input! Thanks! Keep up the great work. Love your content.
I currently have an A7C and was thinking of getting the FX30 to get back in the documentary filmmaking. Which camera would you suggest I use for the A camera, the full frame A7C with my primes or the FX30 with the Sony 16-55 apsc 2.8 I own.
Thank you Matt :) I have a Sony A7III I think I'll buy the FX30 as well as the A7IV. I'll sell off my A6400 and Lumix G9 and lenes to bring the cost down a little.
So, I photograph weddings, and want to get into filming, occasionally film parts of the wedding on a tripod with my 2nd A cam (A7 III) photograph with my A7R III. But I lose my 2nd cam (prime shooter) Settings issues aside, I want a low budget video cam for shooting on a tripod (mostly ceremonies and video guest books, and playing around to learn more). Am eyeballing the zv-e10 but it does not have dual card slots (could possibly be overcome by using a monitor or 2 cameras as they are insanely cheap)? I currently do not grade my colors for video (yet) as it is too much of a hassle with 8 bit, also not getting a lot of money for it as it started mostly to get all the phones out of the shots (Piss off with your phone, already taping the ceremony). No editing apart from some titles and not spending too much time on it as editing a proper wedding film will take me probably 4 times more time than editing the photo’s (me = noob) and also not enough coverage as I do it mostly on my own. Getting to the question: what is the cheapest (Sony) way to safely tape parts of the wedding (dual recording) in 4K? I like to travel light, everything I use apart from the tripod and light stands/ modifiers I carry on me.
U r the reason why I am buying this one. But with it we'll need Lenses. Can U make video about (say) 5 lenses that can maintain sharpness and Af for the fx30 please?.. because FE LENS will lose dome resolution when U put it on a crop sensor, and not sure if the existing (cheaper) E lenses are sharp enough
15:22 this slow motion shot was at 10000 iso only one step from 12800 why did you choose to shoot at that if the next step would’ve given you cleaner image even if it was a little bit brighter, you could’ve brought that down in Post.
So what I have noticed is the depth of field is missing on the FX30 I have to use very low F lens which kinda ruins the shot I really want to shoot... Its good for shooting interviews, speeches, podcasts, vlogs but for other professionals stuff I don't really recommend it.. unless you are really tight on the budget and you only want something brand new..
The Sigma MC11 make it possible to use the sony with canon lenses and keep the AF working. But the MC11 dont loss the crop factor and dont gave u the extra light point. but its cheaper than metabones.
Hi Matt, is it possible to start/stop recording on this camera via some sort of remote (phone, bluetooth remote etc.)? I am looking for a camera to strap onto a hangglider to shoot higher quality footage than with my gopro.
I bought the FX30 just a week ago and OMG what a fantastic camera ! My first camera is an a7SIII and this one is my new B-cam, before it was the a6600 apsc but this one is perfect. I sold my a6600. 🙌🏻
Originally i didnt care for the XLR handle (weird as im an audio engineer) but I cared more about the video and no the audio but as many say? audio is half of the experience and I have no idea how sony created a preamp in that handle to sound like my Apollo twin Duo. A 1200 dollar audio interface. I could not find just the body in stock but after hearing great things aobut he XLR handle? I said screw it - get the one with the handle. WOW im glad I did
Thanks for a detailed review. I have A7M4, with a couple of FF lens and two APS-C zoom lens for crop mode 4k 60p of A7M4. Should I get FX30 to work with my current APS-C lens or get FX3 to compensate A7M4's lesser low light capability?? I can afford FX3. I'm really torn between the two.
Hey matt, totally happy and agree with you … is going to be my next camera but im thinking on lenses… 16mm 1.4 and 30mm 1.4? Plus of course a 70-200 2.8 all sigma …
Smaller sensor, less light... wtf matt, is this texas physics? it's funny how big youtubers don't know the f'ing basics of light, optics and exposure. but it's ok, the viewers seem not to mind the false information, so it gotta be true, right!
Just bought it to be my b cam and essentially be my tight while my a7siii is my a cam with a wide-medium shot, just curious what lens you think I should pair my fx-30 with as it will be strictly a b cam tight. thank you
