I second shoot weddings sometimes and hear over and over "How do you keep locked onto your subjects? My other second shooters using Sony the focus jumps around". I just tell them "Manual autofocusing". Ever since Philip first used the term (probably on the FX9 review) I've adopted it both into how I explain autofocus, and more importantly in how I use autofocus. It's very rare I miss autofocus except in extreme low light or if people are constantly crossing in front of my subject. Those are the situations I've flip back to manual in, but 95% of my event work and even typical corporate work is in Autofocus on my FX3. If the FX6 ever becomes easier to get ahold of I'm sure I'll be picking one up...maybe in 2025? lol.

I love my FX6! Was well worth the wait! As was another one of your stellar reviews! Thanks so much for all your time and effort that goes into these! The only thing I wish Sony would change now with the FX6 is to not bake in LUTs when shooting in custom mode, but would allow you to monitor a LUT-much like when in CineEI mode. For the instances when I have to shoot in custom and may not be going into a raw recorder but need log
@philipbloom
@philipbloom 2 года назад
Thank you. Yeah it’s weird quirk. Part of the reason I always use an external monitor or EVF. You can of course shoot in Cine EI with an MLUT, then you can see your exposure and it’s no different adding gain in post to the cameras doing it for you in custom.

Thank you for another wonderful video. As I watch this video I can’t All but think, how unbelievably And crazily complex and complicated I digital cameras have become. When I look back and think of 35 mm movie cameras, the simplicity of them compared to what we have now is just absolutely colossal. You learn to load the film, you’ll learn to expose, you’ll learn the basics of the camera that are really just the basics of mechanical photography and you are set to produce the most beautiful images in the world no digital camera can even try to touch. Today? You need a 1000 page manual to run these cameras that get upgraded every three months along with with their video editors and the endless accessories and protocols that go along with them. Some say we are moving forward, I personally say we are going nowhere. because you pick up a 20, 30, 50, 60-year-old movie camera, and if you know the basics of photography and mechanics, you can work with them and produce imagery of astonishing beauty. But now you pick up a camera then you need a months worth of training and practice, that will be constantly upgraded, that will be replaced a couple of years later with something else and deemed redundant.. and all just seems a grand waste of time to me. It only takes for me to watch camera reviews of five or six years ago, those cameras look ridiculous, dated, and worth no one‘s time. But an old movie camera, no matter how old, it’s actually never old and will work today just as it did yesterday with basically no training required if you know your art. again thanks for the review, as always the best on RU-vid, and as always too good for RU-vid :)
@aldolega
@aldolega 2 года назад
Just because film cameras were simpler doesn't mean the whole process was simpler. Buying, loading, storing, developing, telecine, etc were all "extra" work compared to digital. They just happened outside the camera. Digital now also surpasses film in almost every aspect of performance so for many it IS the simpler choice.
@philipbloom

Thank you very much for the development of your opinions, advices and the precision of these. They will be very useful in the use of my FX6. I thought, wrongly, that Sony had "obstructed" the 24x36 sensor to leave visible only the part used for 16/9 or DCI 4K. As a result, I have a desire for the next update: If the sensor is identical in every way to the one of the FX3, why not imagine an anamorphic function that would allow to have a more adequate ratio...
@philipbloom
@philipbloom 2 года назад
Welcome. I don’t know why Sony completely ignore opening up the sensor. Of the current cameras only the VENICE can. Not even the FX9 uses the top and bottom. At most we will see an anamorphic Desqueeze for the LCD like the FX9 recently had added
@axelvetter
@axelvetter Год назад
Open gate should be on top of the list for the next firmware update. Maybe a Netflix certification for anamorphic shooting would convince Sony. So far the FX6 can be used for non-anamorphic material only according to them. Then we'd get an aspect ratio of about 1:2.25 with 1.5 times anamorphic lenses instead of 1:2.8 like now or more pixels to play with in post with spherical lenses.

I have been wanting all camera manufactures to include some kind of solution for 'On Screen Display' options. Rather than havre to remove or add back each setting individually they need to make cutomizable user or numbered settings (eg Screen Display 1, 2, 3, 4) option. That way you customize different versions, store them and select which one you would like to use, so that the Display Button references that user option. Similar to selecting Zebra 1 or 2. Seems like a very easy fix. I suppose you might be able to achieve this by saving your user settings I haven't tried yet. (Also word of advice: back up your user settings to your SD Card). Would also be nice to have the option of on screen display information to be top and bottom of the screen like the Canon C300 Mark II.

"That's my sofa doing that noise. It's not me ....". Philip do you realize how many times I've tried to pass that line off to my kids? Beautiful video as usual. You are indeed the Sir Attenborough of the cinematography world (Sir Bloom even ? You still have time, send a post to the royal fam! Bet they could get you in on their knighting docket. ) ! I've been doing some field testing on Sony cams for a narrative film where I'm in the pre-prod phase (I was trained on Panasonic Vari which rigged out might be too much bulk for this project - so a bit of a shift). On this project, it looks like I'll have sound and lighting folks, but no DP .... OR AC for that matter. I mean what is that? Still, I've been eyeballing the fx6 (as well as the more compact a7s3). I like the focus breathing comp as well as the tracking features that I believe will add production value to the shots (and given I will be wearing multiple hats on this one). Sure, I can use my remote FP gadgets to aid this producer/dp/director/loo custodian debut. But I can see the value in touchscreen focus racks with adjusted rack speeds. The splitting hairs issue regards the talent - mostly early teen kids. It may be that, with this group, the fewer takes we have to do, the better - so multicam OTS for at least some of the dialogue scenes may be a thing. So I"m in that position of trying to determine whether to shell out more for the fx6/9 for some of these 'solo' conveniences, or rigging the a7s3 to do something equivalent. What would be your position on this as you have such fantastic experience with both?

Oh yes, one other thing. I will be using the a7 for sure in some underwater scenes as I have the housing for it. So I'll have one on hand at least for that. For the 'above water' scenes, the field is more open. No dolly shots in this one. Mostly tripod and steadicam + gimbal (2 moving vehicle scenes tracking tracking a child biking home from school). Yes, I"m doing plenty of back and core training for this as I won't likely be able to ditch that rig for long periods of time the way things are scoped out now.

I hate technical reviews and somehow sat through a 40 min beautiful short film feeding me numbers and AF hacks. Insane.

The best camera reviews by far. I mean it, BY FAR. You are really selling me into the Topaz software, btw. How do you like clear image zoom? I would like to use the fuji mk zooms :(

Thank Phil, I've watched this video more than once. I've also talked myself in circles about which camera to buy more than once. I think the FX6 is the one. I have two questions (and some sub questions/explanations) that I want to put to rest: 1.) If you're going to shoot RAW 100% of the time, which camera would be more worth it to you: the FX6 or the C70? -The C70 has the advantage of greater compression, internal, and importing directly into Resolve as well as DR. The FX6 has more robust files that can be transcoded into CDNG compressed when needed in Resolve. The FX6 has a slight resolution advantage, ISO advantage, and a massive sensor size advantage. 2.) Am I crazy, or is everyone recording RAW on the FX6 incorrectly? -I want to see a comparison in RAW of S-Log3/S-Gamut3 VS S-Log3/S-Gamut3.cine. In theory S-Gamut3 should give a much wider variation in color. If the FX6 actually is delivering real "16-bit sensor gains", there should be much more color information if shot in s-gamut3. However maybe the FX6 just doesn't have the color pipeline to do anything with it or the sensor itself isn't capable. It certainly isn't an F55, F65, or Venice. However, if it even gives 5% gains and you're shooting RAW anyway, why wouldn't you want to use the increased gamut size? Am I crazy?

Sorry Jeremiah, I don’t shoot raw. The last time was for this video, I am more than happy with the main coded. I also didn’t think that much of the c70, it’s also not proper raw that you are getting from it. If I was then RED would have blocked it!

@@philipbloom the C70 and Canon in general is shooting on true RAW. It has 12-bit LOG RAW internal in CLog2. Canon and RED have a cross licensing agreement. Canon gets access to RAW. RED gained access to RF mount and Canons DPAF. You’ll note that Canon hasn’t given that tech to anyone else. Similarly RED hasn’t given their tech to anyone else.
