Honestly in my opinion, after the magic sauce color correcting & grading, it was hard to tell the difference. This shows that we are living in some great times for technology. This also shows the importance of focusing on the story and lighting. 🔥🔥🔥

You also see the difference when you work with the codec. But the key skill that makes a good image is the lighting. Everything else is just tools.

This was great, there are tons of side by side comparisons, but no one discusses it in as much in details as you! They mostly show the end result in 8-bit yt, expecting us to pick up the difference, lol!

Thanks for great content that nobody but us color geeks enjoy! I had not put Sony into the magenta skin tone camp. They are definitely making better looking images these days. Appreciate your adjustment trick as it does improve the skin tones.

i noticed the shallower DOF on cam B. Considering both looked similar in focal lengths, i had a feeling that the fx6s FF sensor was showing off lol

Beyond surprised. I honestly thought A was the Sony because it appeared to have a more digital sharpness while I thought the Red would have a more natural sharpness. I preferred B (sony) by far and I'm very happy I was proven wrong. Found a new love for my fx6 lol.

Well that’s 6K VS 4K image quality. Not digital sharpness. The Komodo doesn’t have and digital sharpening since it’s RAW. Also, this comparison is strictly for color purposes. Which is why I said to not pay attention to anything else. I did not check for critical focus on either camera and they were both using dulen lenses but different focal lengths.

Patting myself on the back because I could tell from DOF. the colors look incredible on the FX6, I haven’t seen it look this good before I didn’t even realize the color warper had that option. Also while I’m here on your newest video, how do you find the 4: 20 color of the Osmo Pocket 3? I know it isn’t as robust, but do you see a huge difference with your color grades compared to Sony? I’m usually Colorgrading in VLOG with more color depth and dynamic range than Sony but less than RED, so I would love your thoughts.

In addition, if you're the sort of person who likes extra processing on-top like Dehancer or something else for halation, a grain layer (even subtle), or other processing, some of the differences become even more difficult to see in the final product. That plus a 1080p or 2K delivery would be an additional later on top of that in masking the differences. Still major differences between the source images depending on the situation on-set *and* in post, but you can get away with an insane amount now. I'm just glad options exist! Can't go wrong nowadays with almost any camera that fits the job.

Thats the funny part is a feel like a lot of people aren't properly educated on color grading so they complain because they dont know how to get to their end point.. but even more so, I think a lot of people lack VISION so they expect the camera to get the look they want for them.. yet they dont know what that look is. The oil emulation I used is a super high quality power grade by Juan Melara. I use it for higher end clients who want the film look while keeping it cleaner and commercial looking. It really pulls out all the colors! For more gritty emulation ill either use my LUTs or ive been playing with FilmBox!

I immediately noticed the greens in skin tones at 1:00 which was a dead give away to it being the Red to me. Or at least that's what I was looking for. The Fx6 seems to have more pinks in the skin tones.

Interesting comparison! Out of curiosity, did you have denoising enabled on the FX6 (and at what strength)? Wondering if part of the difference is due to the noise reduction of the FX6 vs the heavier chroma noise on the Red. It also would be interesting to see a Prores/Prores Raw comparison vs the Red, although I'm a bigger fan of recording internally since it's more convenient/file sizes are magnitudes smaller.

Noise reduction won’t have an effect color fidelity. It may clean up some of the shadow color noise but that would neutralize it rather give it more color. For the prores raw comparison.. it’s pretty useless sadly since it can’t be opened up in davinci resolve. Like you can’t do any of the color space transforms without davinci. There’s plugins available but they’re not anywhere as close to accuracy. But yes would be cool to see if the pro res raw is actually getting more color fidelity since it’s supposed 12bit. I’m a bit suspicious with pro res raw tho

I was wrong. After discerning the two I like the Red best. Interesting how "weak" 10-bit is but still how much one can get out of it. 16-bit is beautiful really. But I didn't notice it when the film was rolling. So I can be cheated... : ) Thanks for a very useful video!!

I had a hunch camera B was the Sony simply because I assumed it would lean a little more magenta while Red leans more green, and I did prefer it slightly more. Edit: after seeing the shots for longer later on in the video I did prefer the Red more. Also I've never thought about using the colour warper that way. I use to use it to correct my footage from my a6400, but I kinda forgot it existed once I switched over to using DaVinci's colour management and Aces

Man thanks for doing it, I think it's best camera comparison I've watched, CVP has good ones but this is way better being real life examples rather than studio. I think another cool idea for a comparison like this would be shooting similar real life scenes with settings slightly off on both cameras and comparing how easy is it to bring it to a desired look/match with rest of the timeline. Personally that's where I struggle with my Sony at times and also that's what we keep hearing that this is where RED really shines. And so far after watching this comparison above I'm more interested in studying Davinci more than browsing Black Friday deals on RED's website

I liked red and at first thought that a was the red and later on thought the opposite because of the golden hue can't the dynamic range optimiser be used to make it almost match

tried that and it gives nice effect. but what would be the difference if we just put down the luminance in the hue vs lum slider (that should also give the 'density') choosing the skin-hue, or even if we put the gamma down in primaries - as that would have similar impact but choosing bit different range

I’m not sure if the new color warper and chroma use a different algorithm.. but I like the results more vs using the traditional methods. Gives me cleaner and more natural results

If you’re not booking work yet, then the camera you have. If you are booking work.. FX6 is more versatile but a Komodo X can lead to possible higher paying jobs. But none of that matters if you don’t have the skills and network to get work.

The smoothness in the color depth on the fx6 is partly because of 10 bit and partly because it’s 4k vs 6k. They both look amazing. The Komodo def has an upper hand but with a bit of tweaking it’s almost imperceptible

I think it's also just Sony, doesn't have good colors. I just recently bought an FX6 because of client demand, previously on Black magic pocket series cameras, and to be honest I'm surprised how average the image is and how thin/shallow the image feels to grade compared even to Black Magic Prores footage which I often shoot in 10 bit.

Every camera has good colors. It’s the person in post production who has control over the image.. not the camera. So maybe see what you could do better on your end. It’s our job to know how to make every camera look good and pretty much any camera from the past few years that can shoot log can be made to look good and matched.

@@olindamedia I work with both and I do find Blackmagic raw a lot easier to work with but once you get the hang of Sony colors all the info is there to shape how you want. Then once you have it shaped how you want you just create the powergrades and then it's just as fast as working with the Blackmagic footage

i didn't really try to guess which was which, but i did slightly prefer shot B. Is it true with the FX6 that there's internal noise reduction baked in to the footage we're seeing? because if so, I think that has a lot to do with the greater detail (both color and sharpness) when pixel-peeping the fx6 vs red.

Noise settings won’t have as much of a sway over color fidelity. To say that would be to try and pretend 10 bit can perform with 16bit. It simply cannot. You can cheat it. You can sometimes even get it close. But it’s not the same.

Great video, the thing i observe is that the skin tones are very yellowish on both cams. This is why i love fujifilm so much u get so more dynamic of the skin tones. One time a had sony slog 3 footage and fuji footage and i tried really hard grading the skin tones as the fuji. There was less separation between the other colors. Do u have some experience with fuji cams?

Haha my whole channel was started with Fuji. For me Fuji performs worse than Sony. The XH2s was a huge step up, but as someone like to be able to get any look out of the LOG image, I found the log coming off the XH2s had a somewhat of a baked in image. The truth is, if you’re seeing yellow skin tones on both of these cameras, you may need to study color science more and proper skin tones. Cause the Sony was leaning almost too magenta at times. And the Komodo is mroe golden than yellow while have way more skin color detail preserved. In my front hard, as I said, the grass was kicking a lot of green/yellow back into her face on both cameras.. that would happen with any camera. Fuji is great because it does a lot of work for you if you’re not sure what you want the final result to be. But once you learn how to control any log and create a vision for a final deliverable.. every camera is easy to use.

Thank u very much for ur opinion about this subject. Since i dont have a red komodo i'm really curious to do some tests with it in future i just heard positive things about it only the price haha😂. For me i'm struggling with the colorspace export settings in davinchi rec 709 doesnt seem accurate. There is not only a colorshift but there is also less sharpness in the rendered file unfortunately. I tried so many tutorials, what colorspace do u recommand for the export in davinchi? I really appreciate your effort u put in ur videos!

They both look great. I like the RED a little better only because it is, only a little better IMHO. I watched "The Killer" on Netflix last night. Half way through I had to research what it was shot on. RED. Yeah, it's a thing. Story was okay but the cinematography was ridiculous. Not trying to get into another camera brand also could have done that but it was beautiful.

Hi Cam. Did you use the same lens on both cameras? I immediately didn’t like camera A because it looks crunchy whereas camera B seems to have some highlight halation going for it which I prefer to crunchy but I don’t know if you used the same lens on both cameras. If you did then I guess FX6 has a halation look to the sensor. If different lenses were used it would be nice to see the lens used on the FX6 on the KX. Thanks 😊

Both had Dulen lenses on them. Different focal lengths to match the S35 to FF. The point of this comparison was not for those details tho so you shouldn’t be comparing “halation” on the sensors. Which I don’t think is a thing haha. There can be a dirty sensor.. but again you should not be judging the two sensors in that way on this comparison. Hence my disclaimer form the beginning.

⁠​⁠​⁠​⁠​⁠​⁠@@cammackey Hi Cam. Thanks for the reply. I suppose the KX just has a hyper sharp sensor, hence why REDs are used on so many nature documentaries. I realize this video is about color but like a good movie different viewers will get different things out of it. This is the first and only time I’ve ever seen FX6 footage that I liked better than RED footage, or even liked very much at all. However I realize many FX6 owners might be shooting on tack sharp still photo lenses so it wouldn’t be fair for me to say “That is what an FX6 looks like” when people are often using still photo lenses with the FX6 instead of cine glass that can be softer and more aesthetically pleasing. The FX6, FS5 body format is probably my favorite format for fast, lightweight shooting. Just enough room on the body for fast access to buttons, plus variable ND. Perhaps I should reconsider the FX6 when paired with cine glass. Even though the goal of your video was to discuss color rendition, I benefitted in a different way so it’s a win / win. I’ve noticed cameras that make someone’s entire face a monochromatic dimensionless peach color as camera bodies do in the lower tiers but the mid-tier FX6 looks more than useable in these examples even though the RED captures more color (but at a price $$$😊). I enjoyed the video. It’s very helpful for people considering KX and / or FX6. Thank you for all of your hard work and for sharing your findings. Also, I hope you’re enjoying the Bronco. It looks like an awesome vehicle for lightweight off-road production scenarios. 😊👍

Both cameras are great but, the Komodo X has a softer and less crunchy image that appears more accurate and pleasing to the eye.

I liked the fx6 the best. Does the fx6 have IR polution in the beanie in the image where the model is back lit outside with the beanie looking to the left? Ps! I couldn’t spot which was which.

I don’t believe it has any IR pollution. Might just be some chroma noise which the FX6 does have, not as much as the KX tho

How big is the differens on Canon 12 bit raw and sony 16 bit ? i love shoot in the 35mm crop raw lt on my R5C. but its eats up battery and my anglebirds :D

I switched to sony cause I can get even more dynamic range and similar color performance in 10 bit that you can get on the R5C in Raw..

I wanted to love canon but starting finding the need to push to 12800 ISO. sony is fantastic here and DR is definitely better in video. nasty horizontal noise in canon closer to 12800.

Have you tried the test with the internal noise reduction on the FX6 turned off? A lot of what you're discribing in the close up comparison comes down to an aggressive noise reduction smoothing out finer details (and/or the difference in resolution - more resolution meaning more potential tonal separation). Since noise is most prominent in the blue channel I would assume that this channel gets a stronger noise reduction applied so that blue tones are not as separated in the overall image. But it's just a guess.

That’s just a tiny portion of it. I don’t recall if my noise settings are off or at minimum. But regardless, the indoor shot for instance.. Turing of noise reduction isn’t going to magically make the sensor and processor read more information. I’m the sensor could if we had a true internal raw codec. 10 bit see’s 1.07 billion colors.. 16 bit sees 281 TRILLION colors.

@@cammackey Yeah but the FX6 processes 16bit linear raw too. It just get's crunshed into a 10bit codec internally. If you compare the Komodo raw and PRR from the FX6 there'll be no decernable difference (apart from resolution, dof characteristics of course). I've mentioned it before, I hate working with PRR bc I'll always have to convert it to cDNG first but it is raw just like any other. I'm not saying your findings cannot be correct. It's just that it's basically a comparision between 12bit raw and a processed 10bit codec. Of course there'll be differences. What do you mean in regards to the indoor shot? In this web h.264 8bit file I can't see a lot of difference except from the higher saturation in the shadows..

@@MaxKissler oh bro I’ve watched it back on Yt and I can see a huge difference haha. And I understand how it works. I think this is the biggest issue is everyone tries to talk about this stuff but a lot of people don’t even know what they’re looking at. Yeah you can repeat things you’ve been told or read on paper.. but does that actually mean your eye can see the things. It’s like with producing and mixing music.. the people who are good at it can pick out specific frequencies with their ears.. or they can dissect different instruments that nobody else can hear. Same goes for color. That was I tried to explain color fidelity. So back to the indoor shot, there was a HIGE difference in the color being held on the KX vs the FX6. If you don’t see, then that’s cool cause I’m sure they both look equally good! For external recorders. I despise them haha. I’ve tried both tho. Even BRAW recorder. Nothing competes with the red internal raw so far. There’s just a thickness to the red files. Where with the external RAWs everything still feels a little thin and crisp.. like it’ll break easier. The color def held up better vs the 10bit.

@@cammackey Dude, don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about; you're the one comparing 10bit compressed intraframe (250megabit/s @ 24fps - 30ish Megabyte/s) vs 12bit raw of unknown compression (if it's MQ on the Komodo that would be around 170Megabyte/s @ 24fps). Even ProRes Raw is highly compressed and only runs at 80Megabyte/s. So what's the point? I'm surprised that you can even compare the two at all, let alone 10bit vs raw. Considering these differences in data rates the visual differences you see are ridiculously small. It's not like I couldn't grade it to look alike. I'm honestly biased towards the FX6 because I own one and it's my preferred camera. But I've shot on both and graded both cameras raw files and let me tell you it's just as I said, in raw vs raw the difference is marginal. It's certainly not a point that would let me choose one camera over the other. And regarding external monitors: Yes they're shit and I wish I had internal raw or a could afford to buy a Burano as if it was a Burrito but you run around with an external monitor anyway. So whether it's a recorder or just a monitor isn't really much of a difference in my opinion. It even gives you the benefit of having even more redundancy. You can record both PRR and the 10bit internal codec and choose which one to use based on grading requirements. Or that 10bit codec can save your ass if you ever encounter a data error. Don't want to bust your balls, just sayin'.. ;)

@@MaxKissler I have yet see anyone prove pro res raw is just as good or better as red raw. I sadly won’t be doing that test cause I don’t want to deal with converting files. If davinci ever opens up pro res raw.. I’ll buy an external record immediately. Until then, it’s a hard pass for me. Also, shooting in LQ VS HQ won’t really affect color fidelity. Even going to lower bitrates on mirrorless cameras.. all it really does is lower the clarity and sharpness. Which isn’t the same as higher resolutions possibly increasing color fidelity.

The komodo isn't a stills camera. I have done similar videos for stills tho and it's the same thing but even more of a rant. Because when you shoot in RAW you have the ability to make the skins look however you want. Its peoples lack in ability that brings up complaints.

I am shocked! I liked the adjustment on the Sony footage and find it more pleasing. I guess when you work in an environment when you have a colorist that need to have a lot of color information RED is the way to go

Yup! I think for mroe simple setups like this, they hold up next to eachother. But once you start doing more elaborate scenes and color grades.. fhe Kx will go the distance.

@@cammackey I agree that working with footage is different than seeing the end result. It’s nice when footage gives you what you want without fighting you in post by doing weird things when you try to change colors. I’ve never worked with KX footage but I’ve worked with low color depth files and much higher color depth files and the high color depth files are similar to “wherever you want to go we can go there” whereas thin files are more similar to “nope, can’t do that either, okay we can go a little that way but not that much and not enough to fix the problem” thin color files use up a lot of valuable post production time on fighting the footage instead of getting to simply work with it.

Come with me on a sports shoot and you'll be able to tell the difference on the first take ;-) Global shutter. 16 bit raw in case you mess up your white balance. The grain. The list goes on. All of that aside, you can get fantastic results with both. I've shot extensively with both systems and I still think RED in general has a strong edge in scenarios with lost of lights and a decent crew.

I thought camera B was Sony because of the detail/contrast on her hair 1:16 - 1:20 Would that be due to the falloff? Not to take away from the color science lesson which was excellent and really greasy.

Well they were both shot with Dulens primes but different focal lengths. Internal ND vs a matte box ND.. too many variables to judge detail. I wouldn’t pay attention to any of that in this test.

Same way anyone is exposing it brutha haha. They both had 3 stops of ND. Both had Dulen primes from the same set. Both at the same aperture. The KX collects more exposure but none of that will have an effect on the point of this test, which is strictly color fidelity. None of the shots were set up to compare dynamic range or noise.

Komodo X is in my view better. One thing I wish it had improved is the spec roll off. But there is something about Komodo X that reminds me of Canon 5D classic DSLR look. Of course it has more dynamic range and higher resolution, but something about those colours makes me remember of that 5D classic.

Oh man the KX is way better than the original Al 5D haha. I think someone people like that camera mroe because of its lack of dynamic range. It had a beautiful contrast to it and I think people sometimes get too caught up pursing dynamic range when in reality they like contrast. I personally prefer more dynamic range so i can paint my own contrast. But yes I agree the KX def looks better than the Sony and I would hope so haha. But the Sony surprisingly gets close!!

@@cammackey But of course KX is better than 5Dc, I was just referring to colours. Perhaps there is this illusion of a more punchy look with 5D, as you said because of the lower dynamic range. Also, for a hand held camera work that global shutter makes a serious difference. I swear every time I see that footage it looks a bit more film like, not in image quality, just the way its captured without wobbliness. Someone made a video comparing KX and Zcam (without global shutter), I could definitely tell every time, and so I could tell in this case right away. Sony has more "characterless" image, I can't find a better word to express it.

The sony skin tone thing is old news, specially when it comes to shooting in LOG formats because you can transform them into any color space. This was a totally unbiased test, I love both of the cameras
