So far it's only an attempted repair. I'm not there yet and the display controller IC may have croaked. I've got good power coming into it...presumably the clock and serial data lines are good as well. I have no way to test those.
I may not be the first to make this suggestion, but Rigol makes a 50Mhz dual trace scope that goes for about $400 if you ever deem that you'd need something like that. And that's new price, that's not used. The model is DS1052E. Very cool video as always.
I got the exact same device and the display did stop working after transport. The seller didnt pack it too well and the package looked like it experienced quite a bad bump.. (UPS was the carrier of course it received some sort of punishment) Your vibration theory is actually pretty good. Its possible that if soldering is done bad somewhere connection/contact is lost however it could even be the weirdes most difficult things to analyze like inside the chip. Simply unplugging and checking all contact and replugging them helps in a lot of cases.. so I will try that first. Thanks for the video evem tho its been long ago.
Who the fuck is criticizing you. Your doing this for free so they need to shut their mouths because im sick of people being like that. you do an awesome job man love your videos keep it up.
I have an MDS-JE330 MiniDisc recorder, but I haven't gotten around to trying it out since I picked it up about a year ago. I used to use my MiniDisc Walkman (seen in my video "Can 2.46 volts kill an iPod?") a lot, but the expense of the media and the audible artifacts of Sony's lossy ATRAC3 compression drove me away from the format once CD-Rs became dirt cheap. Also the MD Walkman would eat AA batteries for lunch when recording!
@uxwbill I have watched every single video you have made, and I know you have set the camera down in the past. I'm sorry for being sarcastic as I could have been more polite, but I'm really interested in how you do your repairs and want to see every single thing you do during the process. I'm a big fan of your vids and I always look forward to the next video. Keep up the good work!
Bill, Just FYI… Your camera will still record if you’re not holding on to it. Find a place to set it down and do your work while it records. I assumed everyone knew a camera will record without hanging onto it, but I guess you didn’t. In regards to soldering, if we are watching your electronic repair videos we obviously think we can learn something from you. Set your camera down in an ideal place and let us see how you solder the connections.
I suggest getting a logic probe you can test the serial and data lines . The extreme would be a O-scope but a logic probe is cheap and you can a pulser to to test it that way to.
Don't forget to mention caps, they'll hold a charge that'll kick you across the room, Good informational vid!, Lead free solder tends to be problematic, That IC would require Pinpoint Accuracy and a microscopic soldering iron to solder :-O
Hmm, I have been trying to repair my Sony MDS 501. I have a sluggish disk transport system. It is almost like the motor does not have enough power to pull the mechanism through to the point that the system engages. If I take the cover off, I can "assist" the drive system and the disk will load and play perfectly. I have dismantled the unit with intent of replacing part of the mechanism (or all). Any suggestions on where to get a replacement part for this unit? I am calling Sony in AM.
I'd say practicing soldering is a good way to do it. I've taught myself to do a good enough job. I'm sure its not the best job that can be done, but its good enough. But I'm mechanically inclined, and am good with my hands. People like my boss at work aren't so much... lol
@uxwbill now that i think about it uxwbill, i dont think ive ever seen a video from you about a phone or cellular phone. theres gotta be a retro cell phone u got lying around somewhere eh? lol id thought you would say black since its more of a professional color?
I like your advice - "throwing the unit in the back of your truck" lol. I might try that vibration trick with one of my decks that have gone out on me. Sometimes the primitive fix can do wonders.
holy mother of god, giving repair advice and doesnt own an oscilloscope... or work on surface mount components, or own a DMM. the term rank amateur comes to mind
