The begining of the game looks like a movie and the story keeps unfolding as you progress. When you contact Mei Ling with codec you can save the game. Revolver Ocelot character is encoded as a modern cowboy. This game also has more than one ending. The hand to hand combat with Liquid Snake is memorable. Metal Gear Solid is a classic PlayStation game.

Little fun fact: When the playstation was just released you could play copied games without any mod chips (there werent any they came way later) by putting in an original game, leave the cover open and use a needle to block the switch which signals the system that the case is closed. Shortly after the initial boot you could swap out the CD original with a copied one. Also one of my favorite games you sadly not even mentioned was Tekken 3 which is until this day is my most favorite fighting game of all time.

The N64 may have been the successor to the Super Nintendo...but I always considered the original Playstation to be the spiritual successor, especially when it came to RPGs.
@575forza
@575forza 7 лет назад
Not only that, PS1 is the spiritual successor to gaming in general. It elevated video games. And the best part is it was in direct competition to Nintendo, and certainly dethroned it.
@yogoshun
@yogoshun 7 лет назад
Yeah, the N64 was kind of shitty as a SNES successor, but as it's own thing it's pretty good.
@smokythecameraman
@smokythecameraman 7 лет назад
elevated video games? i had and loved my ps1 but right now 1 have ONE ps1 game (SOTN) in my top 15, so I'd put snes and genesis MUCH higher PlayStation also benefits most from nostalgia blinders - SNES and Genesis, even NES atari, and megadrive games are exactly as we remember them. play a ps1 game now you'll have trouble with it (bad controls on most with crap analogs, horrible graphics, voice acting you have to mute, multiple discs, MEMORY CARDS, laser dying) it's was good AT THE TIME, but those other consoles are ageless
@retrogameraaron4778
@retrogameraaron4778 7 лет назад
@smokythecameraman One thing is for sure...the 16-bit era graphics have aged much better than the PS1/N64 era graphics. SNES/Genesis graphics are timeless, but PS1/N64 graphics are very outdated looking (PS1 more so than N64). I think AVGN put it best, "It was the awkward period, between the old and the new".

In terms of impact om the industry then yes, just like PS2 was PS1 s spiritual successor, XBOX 360 was PS2's spiritual successor, and PS4 was XBOX 360's spiritual successor.

what not so many people understand is that when the genesis/mega drive and the snes were at their top and at their late life span, the 16-bit technology and the sprite art were at their best. The progammers had the know-how to do wonders at that point. When they started doing 32-bit stuff, with 3D enviroments and polygons it was like they had to learn from the beginning, it went back to the atari 2600 age. They had to learn all over again.

These days the only thing people talk about with games is unimportant stuff like HD graphics, a millisecond difference in loading times and garbage like that, which leads to stupid arguments like "PC master race" and all that. The truth is, the only thing that matters with a console is the quantity and quality of its games. And no other console ever matched the PS1 and PS2 with this. There's so many great, underrated and barely known CLASSICS on the console that people aren't aware of 'till this day (Wild ARMs pops to mind, for example). And in this video they go through a whole list of games and still only mentioned like one or two legendary titles out of countless. The only console that comes even close to the quantity of games that PS1 and PS2 had, is the NES, and that one dropped the ball as far as quality goes with most titles. Like 70% of NES games are pretty bad. Also, I like Ryan, but he's talking out of his ass when he says PS1 didn't have good platformers/FPS games. He may like the NES platformers more personally, but PS1 had a shit ton of great, popular platformers like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Rayman, Pandemonium, Symphony of the Night, Oddworld -series etc. And Duke Nukem 3D, for example, is an awesome FPS game. It's like an extremely polished DOOM with lots of new added elements.

Slight correction here guys, the Dual Shock wasn't the second controller design for the PlayStation it was the third. The PlayStation originally shipped with the "digital" controller (the "Super Nintendo controller with arms on it" one), then after SEGA released their "3D control pad" for the Saturn, Sony released the PlayStation "Dual Analogue" controller (essentially the digital controller with two analogue sticks added) then finally after Nintendo released their N64 controller and rumble pack Sony launched the "Dual Shock" controller (essentially the dual analogue with rumble feature).

16:50 As for polygons, I totally agree when people say good 2D looks a lot better than bad 3D. However, I will always have a place in my heart for low-poly in the same way I do for low-pixel-density like Atari or NES. For the same reason movies run at a low frame rate, less visual information means you get to imagine more, and it seems more magical.

Cyber Sled was actually a somewhat enhanced port of the 1993 Arcade game, though it was also one of the last games to use the Namco 21 system board (flat-shaded 3D polygons). There was an option to play the game with textures on instead. Namco also released a similar port with StarBlade, which used the same hardware, for the PS1 early on (it was previously on the 3DO and Sega CD as well).

@Starwars4J

Original Playstation was good, but MAN those loading times. It was clear the tech wasn't quite there yet.
@Starwars4J
@Starwars4J 7 лет назад
Um I'm well aware of that, hence why I said the tech wasn't there yet. Loading times have improved as drive speeds have improved, when the PS1 launched the tech wasn't advanced enough, hence the hideous load times, not only compared to the cart-based N64, but also when compared to later disc-based systems such as the PS2 or Gamecube.
@Starwars4J
@Starwars4J 7 лет назад
Are you trolling or something? You think load times for the PS2, or modern gaming systems are slower than PS1? Do you remember how slow PS1 loading was? Are you even accounting for differences in amount of data being processed, which is why similar amounts of data (such as saving) is so much faster to process these days, as a function of the much faster optical drives? This isn't even something that's an opinion or debatable, this is fact.
@Starwars4J
@Starwars4J 7 лет назад
I wouldn't think so, as that's not what load times are...
@Starwars4J
@Starwars4J 7 лет назад
Uh it absolutely does matter. Data is factually processed much faster on any console more modern than a PS1. Again this isn't arguable. We know factually that disc drives are much, much faster.
@BJizzle321
@BJizzle321 7 лет назад
I think tech wise load times are factually faster than ever, but speed wise how they 'feel' is a different story. In my opinion I think the N64 (cartridges) was lighting fast, while PS1 was slow as balls! PS2 through 7th gen Xbox 360 all felt pretty fast. However, the loading times did take a hit this gen. I think those big 20-70gb modern games might be a bit too much for the hard drives now. It might be time for systems/Dev support to make the big move over to SSD's soon.

Don't forget Abe's Oddworld and Star Ocean: The Second Story... not perfect games, mind you, but very entertaining experiences. Tekken 3 was also quite the blast. Legend of the Dragoon was more fun for me to watch than to play. Chrono Cross might have tried way too hard with the characters and the story, but the music and atmosphere was great.

Gotta disagree on the "PS1 had no good platformers" shtick. Gex 2/3, Rayman 1/2, Spyro 1/2/3, Crash Bandicoot 1/2/3, Croc 1/2, Kao the Kangaroo, Tomba 1/2, Klonoa, Lomax's Adventure, Medievil 1/2, Strider, two Bugs Bunny games, MDK 1/2, numerous Dysney and Marvel games... Really now, "no good platformers"?

I think it is impossible due the fact that N64 cartridges could not hold as much memory as a CD, and sound files certainly occupy a great amount of space, so in N64 you needed to sacrifice some of your audio quality to have the game itself on the cartridge

A good game for an example there is comparing the Playstation & Saturn versions of Mortal Kombat Trilogy versus the N64's, the sound quality is night and day (or day and night).

An old friend of mine had the original style silver ps2, referred to by the group as "Smoke stack". it used to malfunction and make grinding noises until you literally punched it in the face a few times. Worked more or less fine for a few hours after doing that until it began screeching again. Rinse and repeat. This went on until the 3 came out. Ah memories! I'm suprised it didn't stop working at all for suffering that abuse. Ikr cool story. :P Keep up the great vids guys! Watch em all the time!

I never understood why some people prefer internal power supplies. They generally cause heat problems, specially on PlayStation consoles. Plus, external PSUs are much easier to replace whenever they decide to stop functioning. So I fail to see the advantage in an internal PSU, if someone could enlighten me that would be appreciated.
@iCach0
@iCach0 7 лет назад
SapphireRyoko You're right, that would be a valid reason, but I haven't seen a manufacturer do that since the Sega Genesis days. And even then a simple ac extension cord solved the issue.
@iCach0
@iCach0 7 лет назад
@Jerry Smith Maybe it hasn't happened to you yet, but a lot of laser assemblies fail due to the heat caused by the PSU. Specially on the earlier revisions. This causes a lot of people to use the console upside down which mitigates the issue somewhat. Look it up yourself if you don't believe me, but I've seen a lot of consoles with this issue. Now, out of curiosity, I'd like to know how can you assert that the PS had no heat problems? Do you run a console repair business? What experience do you have that qualifies you? Otherwise I don't know how you could make such a claim other than from pure ignorance.

i'm sorry Nintendo fans but Crash Team Racing is way better game than Mario Kart 64 or Diddy Kong Racing, N64 might had more graphic power and some excellent games but its library is really small compared to what PS has and that's what matters games no graphic power also what's the point in compare a 64bits machine with a 32bits machine? of course N64 can handle 3D way better than PS so bringing that to the table is meaningless for obvious reasons.

It's funny because during PS1/N64 era (and also during PS2/GC era), PC gaming was at its best. Console exclusive games were a joke compared to PC exclusives, even the best ones such as Ocarina of Time. If you played Half-Life back then, you could never go back to stuff like OoT. It was levels above it. You also have Goldeneye which is always praised as a great FPS, when in reality it was a complete joke compared to PC FPS games during the same time. I remember a lot of PC gamers were making fun of Goldeneye because of how much inferior it was to play an FPS with a controller instead of mouse+keyboard, and because it worked at 20-30 frames per second, while every PC game had 60.
