A corrections, The 1" sensor 13.2x8.8mm (116 square-mm) in the Sony RX10IV are 4 times larger than the 1/2.3" sensor 6.17x 4.55mm (28 square-mm) in the Nikon P1000 !

I am on my way to buy my second Sony RX10 IV. I sold my last one thinking I wanted to up grade to a one of the latest Sony models that hit the market. After spending close to 10 grand on camera and lens, which were really good, I wished I had my RX10 IV back. I quickly got tired of switching lens and carrying them with me. So I sold all my new gear at a lost to me and am on my way to purchase the camera I have dearly missed. Let me say 11x14 prints from the RX10 IV are amazing. I have not printed anything larger but plan to in the future. In my unprofessional opinion the Sony RX10 IV is a great camera. Let me add, the max zoom is super clear. Something other brand competitors has fallen short in being able to match.

Glad to see you took it for a spin :) Great review! Currently shooting an A7S, but I really miss the RX10iii that I had. Focusing not as good as mk4, but still had PlayMemories apps for Timelapse, Grad Filter and ND. Bring those back or bake them into the firmware, a little better low light and the swivel screen from the A77/A99 and I could literally be done buying gear.

Had mine for about a year now not had any issues with battery life but do carry two spare ones and yes I have an after market twin charger. Spent three weeks in Ethiopia earlier this year , scenery pictures and then wild life shots all without having to carry spare lens and not take time switching lens when unexpected bird shots became available. Really very pleased with the results

Have this camera for almost a year and travel around the world with it. After a while, I sold my 70D and Tamron 150-600 and never looked back. the best camera ever for landscape, bird photography and family shots. Only for macro I still use the 5Dc with 100mm macro lens. The Sony RX10 m4 is so easy to travel with and so fast. Video 1080 is very crisp and also the 4k video is very good. Fantastic image stabilization. the drawback is the electric zoom, bud you get used to it. Best camera in my opinion ever. Great video and keep up the great work. greetings from the Netherlands.

I've this camera as well a A7s and A7R3. The RX10M4 is very versatile and I'm using it mostly during my business trips to insure any subject capture (as you said). The lens quality is insane and the AF super fast and reliable. Yes the price is killing, but the job is done in all conditions....

I have one of these and by processing my RAW image through Topaz AI Gigapixel, was able to print a huge 1500x1000mm wall print with such eye-watering clarity and details. All from the tiny, comparably, 1" Sony sensor. And, no sensor dust which every interchangeable lens camera suffers from. I'm wrapt!!!

What is your opinion?

Great review. Thanks. Got the 64K question for you. I’m told you can’t zoom when you’re in tracking modes. Then I read if you set the camera in single point you can shoot at 24 FPS and then can zoom the lens when the bird/dog is coming straight at you ? Have you had that experience or does this sound feasible ? Thanks👏🏻😊👍🦅

Great review! I have shot motorsport and Aussie rules, with this little monster. Love it! You can’t take pics with a 600mm lens over your head arms outstretched like you can with this camera. I would even say the auto focus is better than my 1DX. The video is awesome as well 120 frames per sec in full HD then you can do short clips up to 900 frames per sec although not quite full HD. Cheers

@PhotoRec TV Have you done a safari with the RX10 IV? I want the camera as an addition to my A7RII + 16-35F4. The RX10 IV is so much cheaper as the Sony FE 100-400 + 1,4X Converter AND so much smaller / lightweight. I use the A7RII for Landscape / Low Light. The RX10 IV would be my wildlife/safari option.. Hello! How does this work for concert photography? Is it easy to keep up with the ever changing stage lighting? How is resolution and noise at the 600mm?
@photorectoby
@photorectoby 5 лет назад
It will do ok - because of the larger 1" sensor it will provide decent results but if concert photography is something you are serious about a larger sensor will provide better results - something like the sony a6400 with 70-300 - then again, unless you have a permit most ILC cameras are not allowed at many venues :(

Sold Canon 7DmkII, Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM, 1.4 extender, and a bunch of other lenses down to the range of 15mm and bought the Sony. Thus I don't have to carry 20+ kg of equipment with me anymore, I get twice the fps, can record 4k, slow motion, have a much faster autofocus, and you won't believe it: despite the sensor being smaller the images are still sharper at 600mm (and equivalent)! I don't regret it for one second, would do it again in a heart beat and I got $350 spare cash after buying the Sony. Best camera I ever bought!

Je Zak Hi Je Zak, same setup but got rid of my 100-400L v1 after 10 years of use. Now after having the RX10M4 for 10 I’m not impressed. Low light photography sucks as it can’t focus on anything, macro or close subjects it has a hard times focusing and due to weather conditions no pictures outside as either too cold (some days at -20C) or cloudy/windy or snowy. Battery life sucks compared to my 7DMK2 with a battery grip that I could easily go up to 1800+ pics. Still doesn’t replace my L 24-70mm f2,8 and 70-200mm f2,8. Won’t get rid of the rest of my and actually think of retiring this gadget and getting the newer Canon L100-400mm v2. Almost forgot, weather sealing? None on the RX10M4, no issues with my 7DMK2 + L glass on my Canon in -29C temps, snow, rain or even dipping them in the sea or getting wet while in a zodiac on the ocean.

@@jefo2405 Not making stuff up. RX10M4 is still a all-in-one solution but no replacement for faster glass and bigger sensor. Me too got bored to carry my 20 lbs of gear in a backpack but when it comes to image quality and operational conditions then my DSLR comes first. Could use the RX10M4 as a Point & Shoot but that's it. In terms of temps we have hit the -20C and we are still in fall, we had warmer days but then it falls right back. All the best from up north and keep on shooting (pictures) no matter the comments.

I stand corrected on the term "weather sealing". It has what ever the following video shows: Stuart "James Photography - Sony Rx10iv out in the heavy rain". The RX10 is going to get you MUCH closer with a smaller camera. But if you want the best image quality the larger APS-C sensor is going to provide that - you will just need to buy a longer lens or a much bigger lens.

I just got it today! First impression is that the on/off switch is WAY too plastic, a bit annoyed by that. Feels solid, nice dials, zoom is SO smooth, reminds me of the ENG cams I'm used to. In fact, the way I view this is as a smaller form factor ENG cam. I learned on a NX-5U, and this has a larger sensor, a similar lens and much higher bitrates and resolution. The only thing it lacks is XLR, but you can bypass that with something like www.amazon.ca/Microphone-Adapter-Panasonic-Mirrorless-Camcorders/dp/B075DFXLB3/ref=cm_wl_huc_item. I also picked up a cheap wired lav, and a takstar shotgun mic. I checked out the DCI 4k at 24p, it looks amazing.

Who wants to settle for "doing just as well"? I own both the RX10 IV and the old RX1 that came out in 2012. There isn't even a question or a second of hesitation when asked which camera I'd keep if I could only have one: the RX1. However, I might trade-in both cameras for a Sony A7riii with a GM zoom lens. A photographer needs to keep improving the match between their process and the tools by which the process is carried out. The two need to be integrated and work together, like lens and sensor. But if you don't have a process then you won't care too much about what camera you use, and the RX10 would certainly "do just as well" as a professional camera.

The Sony's 1" sensor is essentially four times the size of the standard bridge type 1/2.3" sensor found in the Nikon P1000. I would take the Sony over the Nikon every time, that huge P1000 zoom is a one trick pony in my opinion. The Sony's 24 to 600 equivalent is more than enough for every type of photography.

@@longrider9551 Interesting you say that, last year I was a guest at my nephews wedding, he arranged for a professional team of photographer's to shoot the event ( a father and son duo ). I took my Yashica Lynx 5000E and my Panasonic TZ100 1" sensor camera to grab candid shots. On the day of the event only one of the photogs turned up ( all be it with some nice gear to be fair, a Nikon D4s and Fuji XT2 ). To cut a long story short, my nephew wasn't happy at all with the few images captured by the " pro "and is still in dispute and awaiting delivery of the rest of the images which almost a year to the day later he still doesn't have! I put together an album of about 70 of my best images captured using 3 rolls of Ilford XP2 and digital images from the TZ100. He and his wife were thrilled by the photos. 1" sensor cameras are superb these days, I carry my Canon G9X everywhere with me ☺

The DR different is around 2 stops : www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-Cybershot-DSC-RX10-III-versus-Canon-EOS-80D___1084_1076 (Even though it's for RX10 III. So, with RX10 IV the difference should more smaller.) I agree that low ISO performance is not as good as the APS-C. But, then again, the aforementioned Tarmron is 1 full-stop slower on the wide end and 1.3 stop slower on the tele end. Canon has no built-in image stabilization and only relies on the on-lens stabilization. On the other hand RX10 IV has a very effective in body image stabilization (4.5 stops) partly due to a smaller sensor size. Also, Zeiss lens on RX10 IV is consistently sharp across the range starting right from the maximum aperture whereas Tamron is not. Not to mention more capable and rapid AF on the RX10 IV. So, no: it's not really grossly overpriced.

If you are anything into wildlife - let's put it like this: I owned the 7dmkII with Canon's awesome 100-400 mkii zoom. That combo kicks the 80D's butt... and the Sony kicks the 7dmkII's butt. Weirdly enough it's not even a challenge - I say that having taken comparison photographs with both under the same conditions. The Sony makes sharper images for half the price of the above! I don't regret selling all my gear for the Sony. No more lense changing and carrying around of tens of kgs of gear. Also, the Sony actually also just about fits into large jacket pockets. No way the Canon will do so.

Sold Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark 2 with the 12 200 lens and bought this one, used, for 1200 Euro. Never ever wanting to change back to the Olympus. Low light is somewhat better on Olympus, yet not that much. Sharpness is so much better. Fast focusing, way better than the already speedy Olympus. Sharpness at 220mm (600) way better than the softness of the Oly lens. FPS.. That's insane and irritating: you end up with 40 plus images in focus. Way too much pictures on your card 😜. It's truly a one size fits many camera..

One of the main reasons I did not buy this camera is battery life, but it is even a bigger problem than was mentioned in this video. The zoom lens is an electronic zoom that zooms out to wide angle every time you turn the power off. The reason this makes the battery problem worst is not because of the power the zoom uses. The problem is if you are keeping the camera off to save power, you not only have to wait for the normal camera boot up time when you turn the power on, but you also have to set your zoom to where you want it every time you turn the power on (unless you want to use the zoom at the widest angle). Therefore you have to wait longer to shoot after power up than most cameras. If you shoot a lot of video the electronic zoom is an excellent feature, because you can get a smoother, less jerky zoom, and you are much less likely to shake the camera when zooming. Sony put bigger batteries in their 3 latest full frame cameras, so I do not understand why they did not put the same battery in this camera. With all the engineering they put into this camera, changing the battery would have been relatively simple, and add little cost. Some might argue that this is a point and shoot camera, so they wanted to keep the size small, but this camera is not that small and light, and adding the larger battery would not have made that much difference in the size. In fact I heard other reviewers complain that the grip size was too small, so the larger battery would make the grip size larger. The larger battery would also allow you to use the same battery in this camera and Sony full frame cameras if you own both cameras.

no, a dslr with a superzoom is cheaper and better though more bother you will not be disappointed, if you were the rx10 would devastate you, its not as small but it is a 600 not an rx10 200, which is what it is a 200 with high pixel density, a 2.7 multiplier that affects the bokeh if not the light gathering. Its like calling a mcdonalds burger a steak knowing only peasants will swallow it, literally. To kill the hype advertise a super burger the dslr 600 as a 1620mm.

It depends on what your needs are and if you want the added bulk. Ultimately I agree for anyone serious about photography a DSLR or Mirrorless is going to give them more room to grow as a photographer but not everyone has that desire - some just want a camera that gives them awesome zoom, solid quality in a travel-friendly package.
