Again a great review from the greatest reviewer ever -always being focused on the positive points of any given camera. Tested it. However, I'll stick to the a6500 because of too many paradoxes from an extentive user POV. Thx Maarten. You're the best!

I own a Canon 5D MIII and a 7D MII and bought the Sony RX10 Mark IV just for wildlife photography. I really love this camera and for this price it gets almost the same quality as its big brothers full frame camera's. The burst rate of 24/sec is fantastic and gives you the exact picture you always wanted. By the way.. very good video review you did on the Sony RX10 IV! I strongly recommend this camera.

Thanks for the great video. It qualifies to be an official Sony camera menu how-to than a RX10 review. I learnt a lot of what's going-on in my 6400 and RX100. Have been looking for a lighter option for my 6400 70-400 lens upgrade, this looks like a good option.

There was so much information packed into the 25 minute review that it made my head spin. Details came whizzing by at a rapid rate, making it impossible to absorb everything. This is the de facto video for anyone who doesn't naturally have an affinity toward understanding camera set-up/settings. It's a bit much to "take in" on one sitting, but after a few runs through, with camera in hand, it starts to make sense! I hope to use the RX-0 primarily for photographing (sea) birds and this guide will help me put the necessary settings on to the Fn keys with that in mind. Thank you Maarten for a brilliant video! It's bookmarked on my laptop and mobile, for quick access!

I forgot one question to ask. Is there a lot of jitter on average while zooming in while in movie mode? ps: Why can’t Sony have an optional manual zoom implemented in bridge cameras like the Olympus 40-150mm Pro instead of the SLOW electric zoom?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 лет назад
Not sure what you mean by jitter in this context. It zooms smoothly, although not as organically as I'd like. There are two speeds available for the zoom.

Hi Maarten,... will you be doing a video on the best settings for recording video on the rx10m4? I want to use my RX10 MK4 to video some model airplanes in flight and in 1080p im struggling with understanding all the different focus modes / options available as per the help guide. What i want to achieve is to be able to manually turn the lens zoom ring while viewing my subject ( ie a model airplane in flight ) via the viewfinder and maintain focus as i zoom in and out to keep the model in shot. These models move at different speeds in flight so its important to keep them both in frame and in focus. i suppose its kinda similar to a bird in flight so im hoping you can help.

You can only use the Video mode to do video. If you have the mode dial in S or A you will get a message stating it is invalid in that mode when you push the video button. If you have 4k selected or 120p selected in your video mode setting and go back to photo mode you are stuck in standard steady shot and have to go back and change your video settings to be able to use active or active intelligent stabilization in photo mode. That is a pain in the ass if you are shooting video and stills in the same shoot because you need the advanced stabilization beyond 300 mm.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 лет назад
I'm not sure what setting your camera has that's preventing you from recording video in A or S mode - works fine for me in HD and 4K. I have a long list of complaints I could have added to the rant about the menu and exclusions - the steady shot problem you mention is one.

How good is the RX 10 4 compared to a Sony camcorder in zooming in and out during video? Is the lens parfocal? In my experience the zoom rocker on a camcorder is much easier to use during zooming in and out or vice versa
@MaartenHeilbron

Not as good. It's definitely not parfocal (you can actually see that in a couple of scenes where I zoom).

I think the confusing features and issues you outlined are the fault of Sony management, not the engineers per say. Sony engineering seems to be tasked mainly with creating new designs and features, not fixing old nuisances and conflicts. Given a limited amount of time and budget, they move on to something new while unknowingly leaving old annoyances in their wake. Even simple items such as poor menu design seem to get carried over. Taken to the extreme, carryovers can multiply as new issues are added over time.
@MaartenHeilbron

I stand corrected, my apologies to Sony engineers. I'm moving the black cloud over to Sony management, particularly product managers and their superiors.

I'm using a card that's not recording smooth 4k video, it's the SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO UHS-I SDXC Memory Card, 170mb/s, v30, I, UC, C10. Am I using the wrong card or is something else afoot? I believe the 30 min. recording limit has to do with the product classification, still v. camcorder, and their import tax/duties. Just got my Sony RX10 IV - will spend time w/ your videos - and also a Brownie 3A. They don’t make film for them anymore. :( might try a 5 x7 )

@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 лет назад
That will depend on the situation. There are many settings to adjust to compensate for various shooting scenarios, you'll have to experiment to find the best one for your situation, and each situation will be different. I didn't have any smearing or noise issues while I was reviewing.

Thank you for the excellent review. I'm deciding between the Mark ii and Mark iv because of the Mark ii's constant 2.8 lens and built in ND filters. I'm both an amateur photographer and videographer. Don't really need to extra zoom and appreciate the slightly lower weight of the Mark ii. Just worried that with all the changes that Sony has come out with the focus, buffer, image and video quality in the Mark iv that it will blow away the Mark ii. Does anyone have a comment?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 лет назад
I appreciate the kind words. The improvements are not dramatic enough to cause me to recommend the IV over the II based on those issues - however, they are all considerations that can't be dismissed. If the extra zoom and the lower weight are factors for you, then that is a perfectly sound decision.

2:50 "With a diopter that exceeds my prescription, so I can shoot without glasses" - What about *with* glasses? Does the EVF have enough eye relief for that? I find it extremely inconvenient to have to take my glasses off each time I want to shoot. To me, that disqualifies a camera before I hear anything else. So far only a couple of DSLRs I've owned gave me no problems when shooting with glasses. How is the RX10IV in that respect? Can you see the whole EVF screen that way without having to contort your view back and forth?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 лет назад
With glasses I lose a little from one edge or the other - but that will vary based on your prescription, as I say, I have a fairly strong one - and have found many cameras that don't adjust as far as I need.

Great review. I have been using the camera the past 2 weeks and find that it does have great versatility. One area of confusion is in shooting close-ups I was in an aquarium and had challenges figuring out the best configuration to get close shots at different focal lengths. While it is true that the closest focus is at the widest angle setting, this often doesn't work in various settings and did not work at the aquarium. The close focus keeps changing based on the focal length used and did not seem to be very intuitive. Perhaps you can add clarifications on that to your excellent series. The camera is a game changer for sure and I have found it has done a better job on wide angle shots than my canon equipment due to the better area of sharp focus due to the smaller sensor.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 лет назад
I appreciate the kind words, thanks. Pretty sure I mentioned and demonstrated that when fully zoomed in the closest distance is 70cm. However, you're correct, in practice, it's a bit of a challenge to get the focal length right when shooting close.

I’ve read a lot of debates online about the RX10 M4 true f stop- some say it’s f2.4-4. Others says that’s a lie-the true f stop is f7.2-f12! What is the “true answer”?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 лет назад
There are many who feel that providing the 35mm equivalent for the aperture, based on the smaller sensor size, would provide a more accurate representation. It's a fairly esoteric and technical distinction that has little impact on the camera's abilities. The difference is mainly seen with a small aperture, as the small sensor cannot blur the background as easily.
@z352kdaf8324

Look at a conversion to 35mm calculator on the Internet for comparison. Funny how they convert the zoom in camera only.

Tests which I saw showed this camera is too slow to focus on birds coming straight at you, not good for use as a sports camera......Most probably because it is. not a F2 as stated, it is f6.5 -f11.......Also not good in low light........Where am I wrong
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 лет назад
With apologies, I cannot make sense of your comments.
@howardkahn4330
@howardkahn4330 6 лет назад
what I am saying is that this Sony camera rx10/4 is not really a f2 aperture but a f6.5 to f11 which means it does not allow a lot of light and if you try to allow light enough to get a moving image as a bird you must slow down the shutter speed to the point that you get a blurry image, therefore this camera is no good unless you have plenty of light.......Do you agree or not with what I am saying ?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 лет назад
I don't understand your comments about the aperture not being "real". Clearly, a small sensor requires a smaller aperture, so in comparison to full frame the absolute number is different, but appropriate to the sensor. This is always the compromise that one faces when taking photos in low light situations - a slow shutter speed or a high ISO. However, the AutoISO on the RX 10IV does have the interesting "fast/faster" feature which prioritizes shutter speed over aperture - that might help. But you can't expect too much from a one inch sensor.

Hello Maarten...great review..You really know your stuff guy....but what if i want to set it on auto and squeeze away.? Does the camera decide what the best Iso etc...to shoot at.? Im a novice wildlife shooter and just want to pull my camera out of a saddle bag and get the shot..How is it suited for that.? Thank you..

It's perfect for that. In P mode with AutoISO, it seems to perform as well as any camera I've seen. You still have darkness/brightness control with the EV setting, and you can adjust the meter for specific lighting situations. Otherwise, good to go.

Only half way through and frighteningly complex. If an expert has problems then a keen amateur is going to be bamboozled and frustrated at every turn. And the essential but missing swivel screen wouldn't make one iota of difference. Seems users would need your video on hand and ready to run as they were trying to use the camera. All this, "if you set this then this other setting is invalid" and, If this is set it cancels out this" is impossible to remember when you are trying to use the camera. Things seem to be getting far too complicated as technology advances not to mention too expensive. I was serioulsy considering buying one but doubt that I will now and thanks for your excellent appraisal.

Hi Maarten I have just watched this review with the idea of possibly purchasing this camera but having watched it I think you have saved me from making an expensive mistake, ie it's not for me. You ask why we can't have unlimited video recording instead of a 30 minute limit, well in the UK this is purely because if Sony give the camera unlimited recording time it attracts a higher level of import duty because it is considered a video camcorder not a camera. Best wishes Vic.

Well, I suppose if you have a small SD card, or it's already full of stuff, recording time is limited to remaining card space. However, a single recording on the RX10iv, like all of Sony's RX, A65xx and A7x models is limited to 30 minutes in order to avoid an import levy in the EU.

My new RX10 IV will be delivered on Tuesday. I tried out the Nikon P1000, and while it did okay with good lighting, it was just too cumbersome to manage. Additionally, focusing on certain subjects proved annoying at times, as it took an inordinate amount of time hunting for proper focus-missed some great shots! But this Sony, while significantly more expensive than the Nikon, or other bridge cameras, seems to hit the sweet spot for me. Gone are the days when carrying a large, heavy camera bag full of camera lenses to accompany my Canon 5D, as my joints and lower back are no longer able to accommodate the extra weight-at least for an all-day hike. And while I’m not expecting to achieve the same incredible detail of the full-frame Canon, my eyesight also isn’t what it used to be. So I think the Sony will be just fine for taking along on our adventures...not to mention, my first grandchild will be born in early October. Another excellent review-well laid out and easy to follow. Oh, and I just subscribed! Thank you again for helping me with my purchase decision! You’re the best!!

I tend to leave the DRO on in its default settings, and select HDR when I see that the dynamic range is more than DRO can handle. I rarely use AutoHDR - preferring to dial in the minimal setting that brings out the shadow detail I want. At the extremes the HDR looks, well, extreme.

Thanks for the kind words. The value of the RX10 IV is clearly in the lens - which is one of the best size/weight/price ratios for a long lens in the market. I'm not sure why you would not consider it for travel as well? I think it's an extremely versatile and capable camera. Not that I wouldn't also recommend either or both the A6500 and the X-T2 - but adding lenses to those will increase the price and weight dramatically.

I enjoyed watching your detailed review. Given its versatility, range and beautiful lens, and the bang for the buck, I was considering purchasing this particular camera for bird and general photography. However, after examination I feel it might be a bit too complicated for taste - though I’d probably be able to get used to that, as you mentioned in another reply you can adjust many of the settings once and leave them alone. You also mentioned in a further reply that it's in need of an update as its getting old. That kind of puts me off a bit. I’d buy the thing and then Sony would likely release a newer version. Another on my list was the Panasonic G9, but that’s getting on as well, though the M4/3 range seems to have the best range of lenses at relatively affordable prices. The Sony a6600 was another, but the lens range on offer is fairly limited. Fuji seems a bit expensive and according to Ken Rockwell their cameras are mainly good for people shots. I don’t really believe that but its just worth a mention. Olympus is good, but there’s no guarantee it’ll be operating in the long term or updating their technology as the company was taken over by JIP. I like the Nikons but the telephoto lenses are very expensive. It seems to me that to get a sports capable camera that takes good quality pictures (that's important to me as I'd like to printmy best shots) prices start at $2000AUD and I can live with that, but when it’s getting up to 3-4k things are way out of my price range and I couldn’t in good conscience spend that on a rig. As a non-professional I just can’t justify it. I know I’m suffering from information overload, curse the internet. All these things considered I still like the RX10. Sorry for the long rant. Any suggestions - for a camera that is?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Год назад
The fact that it's dated doesn't mean that it's any less capable than when it was new - it just seems time for Sony to include some of the features they've included in other recent models. As for lenses - there is no better mirrorless selection, from Sony and from third parties - than those available for the e-mount (like the A6600). After reading all of your thoughts - and I agree that information overload is a problem, particularly when not all the impressions you have are valid - but if it's time to make a decision, the RX10-IV remains an excellent choice until Sony releases an update, and I have no predictions for that.

Thank you for your kind words. These are reasonable requests, and it would be great if Sony listened to them.

This cameras best features are the lens quality and the zoom range. Everything else seems frustrating. Especially the convoluted operating system, lack of articulating viewfinder, no built in ND filters, a touch screen with basically only one function (focus) and what seems to be a clunky difficult to use cell phone app. Why is it that these companies have the potential to be so much better but seem to always drop the ball when it comes to leaving out features that are so easy and inexpensive to implement?

Agreed. Why is it so easy for us to identify the deficiencies and desirable functionality - and why does it seem so difficult for the product managers?

Oh Maarten, that was an extensive one, as usual, but right now, I really listened to every little aspect because I was strongly considering getting this camera. It would throw me into new costs, definitely. I'm in the process of getting a Sony for my stills photography and the new A7III seemed like a great choice. My two Lumix cameras (FZ2000 & GX8) for video and Sony for stills. I'd do portraits and landscape with a new stills camera and a full frame was on my list for a loooong time. Then, when the real research was done, some aspects of the A7III weren't that fantastic any more (I'm considering getting a used A7RIII because of the 42MP sensor) although the video is great, according to many, better than on the A7RIII. I'd love to be able to go Sony all the way because I just love the edge of it's colors and the feel in the hand. Hey, I'm one of those who don't mind the menus at all... I still enjoy shooting with my A5100. If Sony had a no-limit video on the RX10 IV I'd go for it in a second. An RX10 IV + used A6500, then I could decide later on if I'm to get the A7III or the A7RIII. With the Photokina ahead in September, who knows, Sony might be giving us a A7RIV or a sensor updated A7SIII (but they wouldn't go from 12MP to 42MP, I guess the 24MP is to expect). I admit that this sounds like a GAS because my two Lumix cameras are just as good as when I bought them and they shoot great video, the GX8 being also quite good for stills. But going with one brand is making the whole chain easier to cope with. All from the lenses to the editing, color grading etc, would be smoother. Thanks again for a great video. Oh, and for the other shorter one describing the video settings for the RX IV!

I appreciate your kind words, thanks. I agree - it's a difficult and crowded marketplace, making a decision has become very complex.

Yes indeed! The Sony menu system continues to frustrate me. I thought it had got better, but no, I'm afraid it's simply that I'm getting used to it. Recently swapping from Canon to the Fuji system myself has been an "interesting" exercise for my old brain - but having to get used to my father in law's RX10 Mk3 (in order to provide him with help and assistance) has really made my brain ache!

It's exactly those kinds of tasks that doctors recommend to maintain your mental faculties. I suggest that this is a positive exercise.
