Thank you for the explanations along with demonstrations. I’ve had my new RX10 IV for only a couple of days-it’s a bit intimidating, but I know that the more I use it, the more automatic my choices will become. I returned a recently purchased Nikon P1000 for the Sony. And while I LOVED the zoom range of the Nikon, I think it was a great exchange. The Sony is way cleaner, and the camera body is just, well, significantly less cumbersome, especially on the long hikes my wife and I intend to carry it on. Thanks again!!

Superb video. I am thinking of getting one of these. I mainly photograph aircraft. I thought about going back to DSLR but cannot face the weight and all the different lenses I would need. How do you think this autofocus would cope with say a landing aircraft or an aircraft on the taxiway. Which autofocus setting would you suggest to use? I currently use an FZ70 which actually gets me good results but I feel the better lens and sensor in this camera would get me even better results. I logically think the autofocus on this must be far better than on the FZ70 also.

Hi, thanks for sharing, I'm not a professional photography and beginner photography Recently, I have used this camera mainly to shoot my son's football practice/match, as you've mentioned in the video, I am still a little bit confused between AF-A & AF-C, if I'm shooting the football match, is that i should use AF-C & mix with Face Detect? Please advise
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 года назад
Hi Eddie, and yeah for dedicated moving subjects I would recommend AF-C mode over AF-A. F-A should work fine, but that is better suiting for run and gun type shooting I would say. I mostly use AF-C and AF-S depending on what I';m doing. I prefer locking it in, but AF-A does a really good job most of the times based on my testing and is overall easier to use/ "get the photo" for beginners.

Good info! I have the RX10 lll. How does the OIS of the RX10 IV for stills compare to it on the long end?

The Stabilization feels about the same to me going off memory of the RX10 III, but they are also claiming it's better. I would really need to use both cameras at the same time to be conclusive. The IV is probably a little better, but I'm not noticing and drastic improvements in the optical stabilization. I hope that helps, Jay

Jay, I’ve been watching your reviews and tutorials for some time and your RX10 4 focusing tutorial from 2017 just popped up in my RU-vid inbox. It’s very timely as I intend switching from a Sony camcorder to a hybrid, and it’s the focusing aspect of hybrids that I’ve been trying to get to grips with. For video especially, is there a setting for deep depth of field keeping the entire contents of the frame in focus (I don’t want b/g de-focus) without concentrating on particular focus points? For example, (1) in crowd and market scenes where everything and everyone needs to be in focus, and also, (2) more specifically, for table tennis tournaments where two players at opposite ends both need to remain in focus while moving quickly in all directions. I have no problem with the camcorder in that respect (someone suggested it’s because it has a much smaller sensor). I originally thought I would achieve this using all focus points but you now explain that this simply leaves it up to the camera to determine the focus point, so that won’t work. Many thanks in advance for your advice.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 года назад
Hi Craig, The smaller the sensor, the less you have to worry about depth of field. Therefore the RX10 IV 1" sensor being larger than that of your camcorder will have more depth of field to contend with. You control depth of field with the aperture. However, if you are at 24mm and the subjects are a decent distance away, you should not have a problem. If you do, just raise the aperture to like f/4 or f/5.6 and that should fix it. It really depends how close you are to the subject and at what focal length you are using. I hope that helps, Jay
@craigbaguley3359
@craigbaguley3359 3 года назад
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks, Jay, really appreciate the quick response. You've made up my mind for me. I'll keep my camcorder for run-and-gun shooting where I don't have time to think about settings and get the hybrid mainly for stills but occasional video.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 года назад
No problem Craig, and be sure to try out the hybrid along side the camcorder so you can see the difference. Even use it as a separate camera to record an alternative angle perhaps? The depth of field play is a lot of fun and I really thing you would enjoy that feature once you experimented with it a bit. All the best, Jay

Hi im not sure if you’ve covered it but hopefully you could help me.. but everytime i do a selfie with the screen facing us, the person holding the camera is focused, and blurrs out the rest , how do i just make the shot just make everyone sharp? thank you
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 5 лет назад
Hello, you would need to increase the aperture to a higher number, or get further away from the camera. The aperture determines the depth of field, or how much is sharp in the image from front to back. How close you are to the camera also effects depth of field. You would need to put the camera in A mode and dial up to like f/5.6-f/8 probably if at really close range, or put the camera on a tripod or something and move further back from the camera which I would recommend ;) You can then use the 10second self timer to give yourself more time if needed.

I have the RX10 IV. I notice that when I zoom in all the way on a subject, manually focus it, the zoom out and back in, the subject is totally out of focus again. Is this a problem my camera is having, or is this to be expected?
@thexpand
@thexpand 4 года назад
Well, it's manual and I guess you are supposed to be changing it precisely by rotating the ring. As said in the video - it's mostly for still shots where your camera is on a tripod and you're trying to micro-optimize the focus.

I recently bought the RX10 MK IV for my trip to Alaska. I wished I had reviewed your videos prior to confirm some of my confusion, which did result in a few lost shots. In this case I had inavertedly setup for flexible spot focus but didn't understand it until. I continued the trip of taking shots with center focus feeling it was a safer, more understandable option for me. Question - is there a way for the flexible spot focus mode to begin on the mid to lower left side of the screen? I didn't realize that I had use my finger to select a focus spot, or the control pad to select the focus point.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 4 года назад
As fas I I am aware, no you can't change the starting point to the lower left. The camera will remember where you had it last though if you leave it on flexible spot focus mode. Center is a good way to go, and then use flexible spot when center does not work for you. Otherwise you could forget flexible is on the lower left and get lots of bad shots with the wrong focus potentially.
@sfink16
@sfink16 4 года назад
@@Jason_Hermann Not sure what I was doing wrong but the camera always seemed to default to the lower left spot in the flexible spot mode. Perhaps I switched modes and came back to flexible spot IDK. Do you have a suggestion for distance wildlife shots? I used center fouc for my Denali tour day in the park for shots of bear, mosses, Caribou, etc. It seems that at least half were out of focus, or near focus. More to the point, is there a way to determine exactly what the camera has focused on? I haven't used Sony's software since I typically use Ubuntu desktop, which is under Linux. I do have access to a Win10 device however.

I want to use my RX10 MK4 to video some model airplanes in flight and in 1080p im struggling with understanding all the different focus modes / options available as per the help guide. What i want to achieve is to be able to manually turn the lens zoom ring while viewing my subject ( ie a model airplane in flight ) via the viewfinder and maintain focus as i zoom in and out to keep the model in shot. These models move at different speeds in flight so its important to keep them both in frame and in focus. i suppose its kinda similar to a bird in flight so im hoping you can help.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 6 лет назад
Hello, I would try the Wide Focus Area first. The camera should then focus on the closer plane automatically and provide you with very good tracking results. The depth of field is large enough that both planes should be sharp if they are relatively close together. There is no way to track multiple subjects at the same time as far as I know. The camera will chose what is closer by default. If you need to override the default, then you will need to change the focus area to a smaller one. Then you can keep that smaller focus area over the plane you want to track, while keeping an eye on the overall scene to insure framing is good. What you are trying to do is not easy, so please understand this will certainly take some practice to get proficient at it. I hope that helps, best of luck, and please let me know how you make out!
@gerrykeaveney1657
@gerrykeaveney1657 6 лет назад

@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 6 лет назад
If your only tracking one plane at a time, then I would use the Expandable Flexible Spot Focus Area and then select the area on the screen you would to use as you active focus area. For example two planes: one on the left one on the right, and you want to focus on the left plane or right plane, just move the focus point as needed by touching the screen. I would definitely try that first!

Basically the camera will do it automatically, if it detects a face/ eye. For pets you will need to change subject detection to Animal as opposed to humans. See below for more info ;) MENU → (Camera Settings1) → [Face/Eye AF Set.] → desired setting item. Menu item details Face/Eye Prty in AF: Sets whether or not to detect faces or eyes inside the focusing area and focus on the eyes (Eye AF) when autofocus is activated. ([On]/[Off]) (Note: The camera operations are different when using the custom key to execute [Eye AF].) Subject Detection: Selects the target to be detected. [Human]: Detects human faces/eyes. [Animal]: Detects animal eyes. Animal faces are not detected. Face Dtct Frame Dsp: Sets whether or not to display the face detection frame when a human face is detected. ([On]/[Off]) Animal Eye Display: Sets whether or not to display the eye detection frame when the eye of an animal is detected. ([On]/[Off])

Hey Jay Which focus mode would you use to track flying birds and why?
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 5 лет назад
I would use AF-C focus mode and center point focus area to start. This way if the bird moves closer or further away it will adjust. I would chose center focus area, because I find it easiest to track subjects in the center of the frame. You could also use wide focus area, but that might focus on something else instead of the bird. Tracking moving subjects, like birds in particular, is very difficult and will take some practice. It make take you several outings at first to get anything good. I recommend being very patient and not zooming in to much at first. Once you get more practice, you can zoom in closer and closer to get those really killer shots. It took me quite a while to be able to do this, and it's still very difficult with birds, because they are so fast and relatively small. I hope that helps!
@TularaWarmbloods
@TularaWarmbloods 5 лет назад
Thanks Jay. I did have trouble keeping them in focus with the centre focus particularly when they are a small group of ducks or cockatoos going fast and sideways. I did try the wide setting and it was very good if there was nothing else in the frame. Ill keep practising! Thanks for great videos.

@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 6 лет назад
Hello, Great question!! Lock on AF: Expand Flexible Spot does have many other modes if you scroll left and right. Sorry I did not cover that in more detail in the video. Basically the Lock-On AF concept is the same no matter which focus mode you are using within that feature. The type of focus mode would be your preference depending on what kind of subject you are trying to lock on to. For example, if it's a large object that takes up most of the screen then Lock-On AF "Wide" might be the way to go. It really depends on what you are tying to lock on to and track. I hope that helps? You would need to change the depth of field so both objects are in focus at once. To do that you would need to raise the aperture number to like f/11 or so and then take a look. It also depends on what focal range you are at and how far the objects are apart.
